His first appearance in TAS where he attempts to break Beast out, he shows up with that heavy shading. There's more examples, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.
The thing with the cape situation is like the hush batman, they are drawn by JIM LEE. Of course they should be big, you need to remember how massive magneto's and batman's cape was when they were drawn by Jim Lee. Look it up and you'll see. Jim Lee's Magneto and Batman is always holding their capes with their hands because they are HUGE and those kinds of poses are cool as hell lol.
Rule number 1 for mafex, don't buy domestic. Mafex goes for like 60 to 70 bucks overseas. Try amiami or hlj they're reliable. Still not exactly cheap, but definitely hurts alot less than 125 bucks
I picked him and Storm up when BBTS had them on a flash sale. I definitely would not have paid full price for either. They are solid figs for what i paid.
That has nothing to do with what i said about the cape. Why are people so weird these days? It doesn't matter if you can pose it or not. It's still a whole yard of fabric and too much material for the figure.

Magneto’s cape is meant to be massive, all you gotta do is pose the cape with ripples using the wires and you’ll be set.

This is the most solid Magneto there is. I personally don't mind the big cape, it makes him more dramatic and would rather have that than a short cape. Would have liked a neutral face with the helmet on.
This was my favorite figure of last year. I ADORE ALL THE CAPE because the Magneto in my "mind's eye" he had a lot of cape. Jim Lee, John Romita Jr, and Andy Kubert all drew him with this long-ass cape. Add that, and like you said Hasbro's Magnetos suck compared to (I think the only one was the Kraokan era costume is "average"). Literally, I put my Uncanny X-Men Magneto (from he run prior) and just stuck him in the Mafex box. With the Mafex one replacing him. He's just SOOOO good. I still mess around with him posing wise raising his hand or both with those effects. If there's any negative is the one you had trouble with that go into his fists (the flamey ones). I enjoy the blue circular ones because they have that "animated" feel. While the ones that you just peg into his arm feel like he's come from Fatal Attractions to confront the X-Men.
I have this Magneto, too. It is my only Magneto I have, because it's the best looking one. How is this still the best option? Why are all Marvel Legends ones shit?
Yeah, it is baffling that they have such a hard time getting him right, it's not like there is anything strange or complex about his design. Maybe they figure he'll sell no matter what, so they don't have to put much effort in.
When you reviewed the first X-Men ‘97 Magneto, I asked if you’d review this figure and you said you didn’t plan to, to my dismay. I’m glad enough people convinced you to change your mind 😁 I do love the cape, personally, as it gives the figure even more personality, an additional intimidation factor to make up for his usually non-dynamic poses. But thank you for the great review!
I think what's apealing with Mafex is they are making versions of characters everyone wants mix with their own blend for the version (similar to Amazing Yamaguchi only toned down). There is a simplicity to the joints they use compared to Figuarts and Figma that helps with the overall posing.

I snag the Age of Apocalypse version of this figure. And I got to say I really enjoy him. Looks great with my Hasbro AOA Sabretooth. And thanks for pointing out how oversized the Cape is now I can't unsee that.😂
After years of ugly magneto bodies I'm just happy to have a magneto figure with a a girthy chest and back. Its the coolest thing about him and makes him look powerful and mature.
Just actually pose the cape (like you're supposed to) and then you will appreciate it 🥴 that's what the wires in the cape are for. If you're not going to at least attempt to pose it, then of course it's going to look trash 🥴🥴
One of the things you could do in your future episodes at the end: "Will I keep this figure?" Yes or No This review gave me the impression that the figure won you over and he'll be added to your collection now, but I assume that's not usually the case.
The only ones I don't keep end up in the sale videos (not counting things like selling extra shf dbz or just collection pruning) so those videos would be a good indicator. In other words, very few don't stay with me unless they're something I bought (or review samples) that I don't normally collect .
Personally I hope Kaiyodo can take another crack at magneto and wolverine like what they did with spiderman and deadpool. If anyone can do magnetos bulging muscles justice, its revoltech
Good review. You pretty much articulated for me why I don't have this figure. It's fine, good even, but for the price I want something closer to perfect. I have the MAFEX Hush Batman and I hate that cape so much that I want nothing to do with it here on Magneto. Plus the skinny legs and lack of a proper shaded portrait is what has held me back. Whoever makes the next 1:12 Magneto, please look at the Mondo 1/6 Magneto's shaded-eye portrait and just rip that off please. No one will be mad that you did. The sad thing is, I think Hasbro tried with the '97 Magneto but they Hasbro'd it up.

That may be impossible to track down these days, but there is a guy on Instagram that makes a damn decent force field effect for Mags. Price isn't that bad either from my memory.
Hasbro can't even come within a margin of that flaws and all.... And the Jim Lee magneto formed his suit from metal so the whole thing being metallic makes sense.

Magneto is one of those characters... like Hobgoblin and a few others... where Hasbro keeps making him over and over and they always come close but they still manage to flub it in a way that their attempt is a very mediocre if not outright bad figure. There is always SOMETHING that is off... the height, the cape... SOMETHING! It's sad that my only hope is that it took Hasbro LOTS and LOTS of bad tries before finally giving us a perfect Doctor Doom and a perfect Ultron. This one looks great but I'm not going down the Mafex rabbit hole... and I always hate it when they give Magneto long hair that sticks out from under his helmet. You can't trust comic book nerds on fashion and style. I mean... look at them!
Too shiny for my taste. At that price point, I prefer matte. Shiny is too toylike unless it’s representing a traditionally metal costume like Iron Man.
Nice! I’ve been hoping you’d review this, I was curious what you’d think of it. I do personally love mine, but I understand the cape issue. It can be frustrating but I like it in the pose I have it in. The effect parts are similar to the way he’s drawn in some comics but ultimately remind me a lot of his Marvel vs Capcom moves too. The blacked out head was actually a selling point for me because I’ve always loved when he’s drawn like that. Great review!
The spiked effect is definitely from the intro of Marvel Superheroes arcade game from Capcom. Most of Mafex Marvel figures draw a lot of inspiration from Capcom depictions. You can spot it in certain promo shots for X-men characters.
I can’t wait for you to review Mafex Knightfall Bane that figure proportions are atrocious and I don’t get all the praise…. his feet are as long as his shins and has a gigantic noggin and the lats look weird.
There's enough different to warrant purchase. Definitely not a lazy repaint. Base body and some of the hands are about the only thing used. Everything else is totally new.
I have the Mafex Hush Batman and the giant cape works on him. Batman poses frequently with the giant cape blowing in the wind or with it covering him entirely. I can totally see how it doesn't fit Magneto. They probably used the same size to keep things simple and overshot it.
The thigh articulation is one of if not the main reason I don't collect Mafex unless it's an absolute need of a character, I'm on the fence about Magnus mostly due to size, this size doesn't make him intimidating imo, at this point I'm waiting for a 3rd party to make a properly proportioned body to customize cause I'm spending almost the same but always getting something that is just lacking this or that. Want something done right, sometimes you gotta do it yourself
Soft goods capes are hit or miss for me. All other things being equal, I prefer sculpted capes, even with the limitations that come with them. If I was super into playing with or posing my figures, I would probably appreciate soft goods capes more, but as someone that likes to keep things simple, I find them to be “fidgety” (as Robo used to say). One thing about Mafex capes that really drives me crazy is trying to get them back into the original packaging after posing them. I can never seem to fold them back the way they came, and I’m always worried about making permanent wrinkles or creases.
Cape is fine. Legs are fine. You can’t expect the anatomy of every figure to have the same proportions. People have short legs, long legs, short arms, long arms, broad shoulders, low shoulders, long neck, no neck 😂.. you get what I mean.. I think what really matters is did the toy company nail the anatomy of the source material.
Yeah... We have source material. Also, human anatomy. No one has lower legs longer than their upper legs. It's not a thing. So the figure doesn't match the source artwork or being a human... There's no argument against that
I prefer the non-black-face. I also HATE this cape so much. Like you said, it’s unruly. Also don’t like how the cape is connected all the way to the front, just wish it was connected to the sides so we can see his boulder shoulders.

People don't seem to realize that things are really expensive. It's odd to not consider their shortcomings given the high price point.
Once a collector learns how to pose a cape, they then reach a whole new level of posing figures.
