I remember watching this speech early in the morning before going to school as a high school freshman. The last time a President of EITHER party showed the decency to own up and tell the truth to the American public without regard for political fate. President Carter, as you complete the final arc of your remarkable life, remember that in many ways, you were too good a man for many of us.

I couldn't even believe he beat Ted Kennedy for renomination.

Regardless of how this mission turned out, we have to thank the members of the military for their bravery and in too many cases, the ultimate price, they paid for trying to free their fellow American citizens, from captivity. Thanks also to President Carter for having the character to admit and take responsibiltiy for the mission's eventual demise. Carter decided to be a good man before being a good president.

That's not correct - The hostages were freed because Bush made a deal with the ayatoolah for weapons and spare parts to F-4 phantoms - when we fiucked them out of the stinger missiles - they retaliated and blew up GANDER - the largest loss of Specil Ops guys in history - that no one remembers - or cares about because it happened in Gander Newfoundloundand and they coveres it u - and Oliver North was the guy who was repsonsible for that. - as well as Eagle claw...

Despite what Carter said, the mission had no real chance of success. Had the DF made it to the embassy compound then a massacre would have ensued, ending with the deaths of the hostages, the US servicemen and dozens of Iranians. The Special Forces simply did not have the capability to effect a successful rescue at that time and continues to be afflicted, as demonstrated by their attempt to free an Irish nurse captured in Afghanistan recently, which ended with her death. She was killed by a SEAL team hand grenade.

My Father was in Delta Force, he was one of Colonel Beckwiths guys - as Beckwith was the CO of the base where my father did his basic training. Beckwith was stationed at Fort Dix in 1974 and my dad did his basic there too - later when beckwith formed Delat Force, - Operation Blue Light came first - then Delta - in november 1977 - later my father trained for this mission, - long story short - from what I can gather from father, - althrough my father would never admit it - to himself - the mission was desienged to fail from the start - it had multiple failure event planning basically built into the mission, It was meant to fail from the strart. The "decision," to Abort was made BEFORE the mission - it was AGREED BY ALL - including the president and the JCS - that the mission would be ABORTED when and IF, they were down to 5 of the 8 helicopters they agreed to abort....so when they all got to the desert one landing spot, they were already at 5 helicopters, and HAD already agreed in the mission planning to abort if they had only 5 or less helicopters...its just that Carter is an incredibly honest and honorable man - who did what any great leader would do - which is to fall on his sword, and take the blame - for the decision and actions of others....when the truth comes out - as it always does, the americah people will see Reagan and Bush and Carter in very different lights...moreover, its not even really clear that the 93 men could have actually accomplished the mission, since they were dropped so far from the place where they were to rescue the hostages that the likelhood of them being detected before they were able to storm the embassy - was basically zero. Also - and this is a fact that no one outside of the mission knows, is that they did not have the proper sand filtration on the helicopters to successfully fly 250 miles across the desert with no visual aids to navigation!!! Their training was done at a secret site, on the west coast, and it was only 20 miles wide, and they flew from one end of the this place to the other and back and were never able to get all 8 helicopters to and from the landing spot 20 miles up and back - without serious mechanical failures - due to ingestion of sand into the turbines....this was also an issue in 1st gulf war, where they still had not fully developed a sand filtration systems for heavy desert use....so my father told me - that was really the main reason he refused to go on the mission - at the last minute, he protested to Beckwith about the filters, I think he had hoped that his protest - or refusal to go would have swayed beckwith to at least postpone or put off th emission until they could get the sand filters worked out - but larger - much larger forcs were at work, and I dont think that any of them realized it - until it was too late....

Carter may have authorized the rescue attempt.
However, the Military is the one to be blamed for the deaths of our valiant soldiers.
They were the ones that told Carter they could do it so he went off of what he was told.
It was not Carter's fault that they did not communicate and flew thru the sandstorm. it was not his fault there was a mechanical failure.
It is not his fault the military did not make continegency plans for adverse weather that they should have foressen.

A little historical context for everyone. When the embassy was seized, a large scale military operation(ie invasion) was out of the question because the end result would have been the Soviets invading across Iran's northern border which very likely could have touched off WW3. Carter's mistake was bowing to tremendous political pressure and letting the Shah in for cancer treatments. THAT outraged the Iranians and touched off the crisis.
Keep in mind that ALL of the hostages came home alive.

Carter believed that, despite the rescue mission turning into a complete disaster, the American people would give him credit for trying. To say he was wrong is a drastic understatement. In retrospect, it is clear that the rescue mission's failure ended whatever small chance Carter had to be re-elected. The New Republic Magazine called it the "Jimmy Carter Desert Classic" since it accurately summed-up his actions as President: a well-intentioned effort, that has not been well thought-out, is set in motion; it turns into a complete disaster; and the situation is now worse than it was before he became involved.

Carter took full responsibility,Trump blames the failure of his first mission on the troops.

Yes, but sticking to the topic of money, that would be more expensive taking them down, which was what Reagan did

  • @CountSwann
    @CountSwann 11 лет назад

It is still relevant on the topic of war so I haven't, If Reagan had sense he would have stopped mobilising over a pointless cause, also the fact that Carter had not been run by the CIA, that'
s where he would have saved money, not by being a warmongering President

Say what you want about this man, but give him credit for taking full responsibility for the failure of this mission. Trump wouldn’t have the guts and decency to take any blame.

He should have ordered Eagle Claw on day one and it should have been rehearsed a hundred times with triple checked helicopters used.

Study the history of British Petroleum. The entire relationship between Iran and the west began with the company Anglo-Persian and the way Persia was cheated from their royalty agreements. Thus begat a series of governments nationalizing oil and foreign powers overthrowing their governments.

No what caused the inflation was the Yom Kippur War which Carter supported Israel, without a military presence, and got embargoed by the Arabian League, and Reagan also spent crazily on military, because he was so hooked up with the arms race and the USSR, which by that time was running out of time anyway, so he devoted it to a pointless cause, also another fact being Reagan again was being effectively run by Bush Snr and the CIA, therefore more inclined to go to war, with people like Saddam.

I have a very clear and I said I was not born in the 80's but studied it very well I have a 10000 word dissertation, in which I visited America, in fact Georgia and all of the people that I saw that is in their 40's and they all agreed Carter was a good president, and Reagan was regarded as a lesser President, and no way near s good, Carter never fired a shot as well, as I recall from my studies he never actually went to war and killed people.
