Kudos to the Pinellas County Commissioners for standing on the agreement as is and outing what might be a power play the Rays ownership is trying to do...of course I don't have all the details, just commenting on what's been said/done already.
The bottom line for MLB is that the TV market is too big to lose. Both sides had to have this deal happen. The county can't allow the team to keep 62 acres for free (if they voted no) and the team couldn't let 62 acres of land walk away for nothing (if the Rays walk away, which they won't). This stadium will happen. Edit: Thank you Brodie for your continued coverage on this story. He voted yes because of Rob Manfred? Gee isn't he supposed to work for the taxpayers? But yes, this one of those up is down and down is up scenarios and the county put themselves in this unfortunate situation but still may come out OK. It will probably be the taxpayers who get the shaft, as usual.
Let teams pay for their own stadiums. The public foots the bill then team ownership demands public money for renovations or a new ballpark just a few years later. A tale as old as time.
They reduced the policy limits on Tropicana field from $100 million to $25 million. To save 250k in policy costs now they don’t have enough money to even fix the old place😂 that’s Florida. Step over a dime to pick up a nickel
5:10 a convention center? Really? Is there really a market for one in St. Pete? Convention spending and number of visitors are down compared to pre-pandemic numbers. And there's already a convention center in Tampa and not far away is Orange County in Orlando.
All these stadium deals are bullshit why do you need a new stadium every 20 years ..Red Sox been playing in the same stadium since 1912 , Cubs Wrigley Field since 1914 , even the Dodgers been playing the same park since 1962 ..
“I’m pretty sure Commish Manfred does not side with the Rays here. Evidently $1.7 Billion in public money, and another $5-700 Million in Real Estate profits is not enough. The Rays only hope is Tampa Bay area and maybe Utah. Orlando is not funding a 2 billion stadium. Did you see the negotiations for Magic's arena? Brodie posted about Nashville. MLB is just bar room talk in Austin, Tx. Portland is pipe dreaming. Omaha is too small. Montreal can't even manage Olympic Stadium, nor will Montreal pay over a billion for new stadium.
It took 25 seconds. I spit out my water. He trusts Manfred? Really? Wow... That may be the first time anyone has ever said that. Manfred is a scoundrel and he's not very bright. He has a very hard time reading the room and he has allowed baseball to become a relative joke in the sports space of America. Manfred will tell these public officials one thing and the Rays - as they will and CAN do - will end up doing whatever the hell they want. And they'll get the support of the 29 other teams. Here's looking at you Omaha Rays.
Smart move by the county commission IMO. The Rays are now on the clock to either build the ballpark and absorb all cost overruns, or break the deal with St. Pete / Pinellas and litigate the surrender of the land. I don't think MLB / Manfred can force Sternberg to sell the Rays provided he's complied with all conditions required to remain an owner in good standing. All eyes on the Rays are they here for Tampa and St Pete or are they fakes and only in this for money time will tell the people of Central Florida we'll be watching you Rays 😠 you made this extremely difficult for the county and City pressuring them to do it in a bad time for the area after the hurricanes as a Rays fan I love this baseball team and forever love them but the question is do they love their fans back
This is may be the most incompetently run county in the country. Most of them think it's a bad deal yet they are approving the deal hoping the Ray's try to get out of the deal.
I watched this for like 3 hours today. I got the sense that they think the Rays won't be able to cover all their commitments by the deadline, and the deal will terminate. Then the 62 acres of land reverts back to St Pete ownership. I think they're taking a gamble, given that the Rays have already indicated they can't meet those commitments in the deal by the 3/31 time frame. But yeah, it's Florida. Our whole government down here is trash.
Basically, they passed the bonds to force the Rays' hand, force them to put forth the money or risk losing all the land they technically currently own. I don't think its incompetence in this case, its trying to untangle an absolute mess of politics and money.
😂😂😂they still gonna leave. That owner isn't paying a billion for a stadium with his own money. He ain't got it,just like Oakland they're not going to put all that money to a whole community restoration. They be gone in less than 3 years.
It will be really interesting to hear from the Rays. They have thier bonds approved. It feels like if they want the Trop fixed they better get to holding up their end of this deal and get shovels in the ground. Seems like Manfred's visit was to reassure St.Pete, Pinellas and the State baseball is here to stay in Tampa Bay with or without Stu. I think everyone involved saw through Stu's posturing and hes not going to get approved for relocation with the funding in place.

Why on earth would they approve this? The owner is an entitled clown. He doesn't give a crap about the community or anyone else. He doesn't want to be there. Stu is going to have to sell off shares of the team to come up with the portion he is responsible for. It will get done and he won’t be able to cry poor anymore.
The ball is in Stu's court now. Ownership can still kibosh. What Stu has lost today is the ability to blame the county as the county took the blame off themselves

For the Rays to now blame the county for vote delays when the area was hit by such devastating storms and the need to take care of their citizens first is pretty low IMO.
@@michaelmarkowski204 The outcome of the vote would have been a yes or no. The Rays had two responses written long before today. Both were (or would have been) petty and ridiculous.

Here to stay. Stu or not, I don’t care about ownership, as long as it’s agreed baseball needs to stay in Tampa bay is all that matters to me. Would be amazing if glazer and vinik bought some stakes in the team, don’t know much about how that would work though.
I am not a fan at all of Manfred, but it looks like he has lost his patience with the Rays ownership group and is starting to put pressure on them to stop messing around and fork over their share of the funds or finally sell the team.

Rob Manfred isn't looking out for the fans or communities --- he's acting in the interests of the team owners who, after all, are his employers. MLB has one agenda: use other people's money to enrich themselves.
All of the blah blah whining and complaining and postering is an unnecessary and unrelated waste of time. All of this could have been said in 1 minute per voting member.
It was actually on for 4hours before they voted with citizen after citizen each having an opportunity to speak before the vote. I was streaming all of it at work. It was more painful than what this clip shows.

Now the Rays will have a brand new stadium that nobody will go to ..
They were in it for the land deal and propping up the value of the team with a new stadium anyway.
"It was unsurprising to see the commissioners acknowledge how important the Tampa Bay Rays and our stadium development agreement are to this community and its citizens," Rays co-president Matt Silverman said in a statement shortly after the vote was handed down. "As we have made clear, the county's delay has caused the ballpark's completion to slide into 2029. As a result, the cost of the project has increased significantly, and we cannot absorb this increase alone. When the county and city wish to engage, we remain ready to solve this funding gap together." - .......The fight isn't over.
@ That sounds like they want out and are giving an ultimatum..I don’t live there so I have no idea , but why don’t they just upgrade the stadium they have and call it a day and save millions if not billions
I love that he just said this
Someone or someones got paid off. 😂
There is no reason for any of this. Until the hurricane, this was going pretty ok. Just because the other county has a real ball park to utilize 😮
Never wouldve expected a Cathie Wood name drop here
About a year ago she moved her entire operation to downtown St. Pete.
Rays have to meet all their commitments by March 31st 2025, or the deal terminates. It's still not over, it's just in the Rays court now.

@@ArizonaHotSauce Rays must've had this PR response all written and ready to issue the minute the funding vote passed along with a second PR ready to go if the funding was voted down or delayed again.
This upsets me because I want to Rays in Tampa where they belong, not in Pinellas
Manfred will force Stu out. Im ok with it.
I still smell Tampa coming up with a competing offer.

Here to stay. Stu or not, I don’t care about ownership, as long as it’s agreed baseball needs to stay in Tampa bay is all that matters to me. Would be amazing if glazer and vinik bought some stakes in the team, don’t know much about how that would work though.
Your lucky you have a baseball owner interested in in Tampa bay. To be frank TBay is not an Ideal place Soon you won’t have a team here
I am not a fan at all of Manfred, but it looks like he has lost his patience with the Rays ownership group and is starting to put pressure on them to stop messing around and fork over their share of the funds or finally sell the team.

Oh a new owner could possibly be incredible, or awful let's get real here some of these teams have horrible ownership XD
Rob Manfred isn't looking out for the fans or communities --- he's acting in the interests of the team owners who, after all, are his employers. MLB has one agenda: use other people's money to enrich themselves.
I thought I heard the Rays are moving to Wichita
Approving a deal for a stadium that is going to be Empty when will they get it? MLB will never work in The state of Florida
Miami 2.0 they can’t even sell out for the playoffs.
All of the blah blah whining and complaining and postering is an unnecessary and unrelated waste of time. All of this could have been said in 1 minute per voting member.
They like their time in the “spotlight” 😉
It was actually on for 4hours before they voted with citizen after citizen each having an opportunity to speak before the vote. I was streaming all of it at work. It was more painful than what this clip shows.
cool
They are throwing SHADE at ownership. @brodiebrazil do MLB and other owners have a mechanism (carrot or stick) to force a change of ownership?
