Ok it's way simpler than you think. It's just another money grab. Tom Brokaw used to call this "the fleecing of America."
Exactly. I too have been noticing that any new sporting venues arre now all having these ( extras ) I included. I thought they looked nice but never connected the dots that they also want taxpayers to pay for their real-estate projects too. Very slick.
Rays deserve to move. They don’t support their team. They are constantly in the bottom-3 of attendance and even during playoff games they average under 20k fans. That’s not worthy of having a pro sports team.
What happened with Hillsborough County is that the County wanted the Rays to pay more than what St Pete was asking, but the money is there and they are waiting to see what happens. If anybody asks about where they are going to get the money from, Hillsborough voters just renewed the same tax that built Raymond James Stadium in November. Also, that harbor you mentioned, is a run down shipyard, but it could be cleaned up and fixed for future use.
If an environmental study on the shipyard is required, it could be a while before anything happens. Past experience with such industrial sites are that the cleanup could be very involved and expensive. Anyone investing in such a site is going to want assurances they aren't on the hook for unforeseen financial consequences -- assuming they can get outside financing for such a potentially problematic site.
I predict that all of the public funding for the new stadium will fall through and that the Rays will be shocked by the lack of generous offers from other cities.
I worked on infrastructure projects for both the Trop and Ybor City sites. The ballpark concept was basically the same in both. Makes sense because they didn't know which site would be approved. So, the ballpark doesn't need much tweaking. The "Stadium District" concepts would vary based upon the available land parcels and overall scope of the other uses - hotels, restaurants, offices, residences, etc.
I seem to recall Ybor City being in play several years ago but the deal got shot down then. I'd be surprised if they landed there. But you never can tell.
@@plangineer1375 Okay. Truth be told I don't have a dog in the hunt so I'll take your word on it. I do know the current location sucks and building a new stadium there always struck me as a bad idea.
Tampa is the 17 th largest market in the country. MLB isn’t leaving. Let them pay for the stadium. If the people want to pay for a new stadium just use all the money you made off the last stadium over the last 30 years
I also think there's another special thing about keeping the Rays in Tampa Bay area. I think the MLB awarded Tampa Bay an expansion team mostly because George Steinbrenner, who lived in Tampa, had done so much for baseball they gave him an expansion team per his wishes. If this is true it would take A LOT for the MLB to allow a move out of the Tampa area.
Per JP Peterson on X today: “Even if this passes there is NO DEAL! The Rays have said multiple times they will not pay for the cost overruns that they agreed to pay for. The county asked for the Rays to show up and prove they have spent the money they say they have spent and to PUBLICLY PROVE they are still in. I doubt they will but let’s see!” This will demonstrate I think though that Tampa Bay as a whole is committed to keeping the team and this will illustrate beyond the shadow of any doubt that the area wants the team and will keep it in some form. Rob Manfred will not and cannot take the team away when it’s the ownership itself who is unfit to keep the club and abide by its agreements. This is all on Stu (Sternberg). Translation it dies on the County level today
The Hillsborough deal fell through when the Rays proposed the 2nd most expensive baseball stadium at the time. There was little appetite to publicly fund it.
I agree in principle with those who say it's unreasonable for billionaires to request public funding for a new sports facility. But if the choice is between public funding and losing the team entirely, then I would generally prefer the latter. If the Rays have to move to another market, then so be it, but they should exhaust all their options in the Tampa region first. If we want to stop team owners from pulling these sorts of tricks in the future, then states should pass laws saying that any pro team that gets public funding is legally classified as a public-private partnership.
as a Phillies and MLB fan i just want the Teams to all get home where no problems are so MLB can finally expand the way MLB is going i say now not to 2040 or later
Thank you for filling in the gap of why Sternberg abandoned the seemingly perfect location in Ybor City--the chance to develop peime waterfront land and rake in the profits. Just like what Lucy Van Pelt asked for Christmas: "Real estate."
Also should further clarify, I listened to the county’s last meeting and the chair commissioner has said none of the money is coming from local tax payers it’s coming from tourist bed taxes. The news tendency to pick just latvalas statement shows how the news is trying to paint this in a negative light. The chair commissioner Kathleen peters and latvala went into a back and forth about disagreeing about the deal and it just wasn’t professional from latvalas side. All county commissioners agree that they should get a statement on getting a list of obligations that the rays need to meet. Latvala was also strung up on the team getting real estate in a city that he as a county commissioner has no control over. A lot of petty stuff going on. If the livestream is still uploaded to RUclips I’ll send it into here
County needs to vote NO. It’s a disaster for the taxpayers. A stadium seating least than 32,000?????? Infrastructure is not equipped to handle the extra traffic and cost.
Do your research. The county dollars is from bed taxes and can only be used for tourism… they cannot and should not be used for residents affected from the storms.
@@jeremybingham7505 what an awful sentiment. You’re saying that the tourist tax shouldn’t be used on struggling residents and taxpayers? That’s a disgusting statement. I have family and friends who have been greatly affected by the storms. Shame on you.
@ that’s what FEMA is for… you can’t take money that is for one thing and use it for another. That’s commingling which is illegal. We all have family, friends etc who were affected by the storm… that’s what’s homeowners and renters insurance is for… I also do not want my tax paying dollars used to fix someone private home… sorry for them but that’s not my problem
@jeremybingham7505 It's amazing how y'all are trained to lick boots. I assume you're in Florida and if so, you have this amazing opportunity to collect a huge amount of taxes related to tourism, and use them to benefit your residents. And instead, you choose to force these taxes into the hands of people who have the money to build their own damn stadium.
Counties and taxpayers need to stop supporting multi-billion dollar franchises. Why do they deserve millions or billions of tax dollars? The city does not get that much of an economic boost. $1-2M in "rent" for 20-30 years isn't enough to cover the millions and sometimes billions that get shelled out. Time to stop funding billionaires.
Personally I am of the opinion that the rays should leave Tampa have a fresh start the state of florida is not the best choice for a new stadium ( it has not been a good market for baseball mainly because of attendance ),even if the county approves in the future they would get a booom for a new stadium that would fade very fast as happened with their current stadium I personally would prefer a rebranding go to Oregon and become Portland Navigators and test a new market they could explode when a future expansion comes with its respective realignment geography.
I think 90%+ of Rays fans would prefer the team move to Tampa but will settle for the team staying in St. Pete. better than the alternative of Orlando, Nashville, Charlotte, Montreal, Utah, Portland, etc.
If this fails and the Rays skip town, all the good feeling that has existed under Stu Sternberg's ownership goes away. The 2008 season/post-season, the amazing 2011 last night of the season, all the playoff wins, and getting to the 2020 WS, two wins away from a world championship. All of it. Relocation becomes the legacy. Don't let it happen.
they will vote yes 100 percent. if they cancel the deal the rays get the 65 acres. if rays cancel the deal the county gets the land. another terrible deal by the county and city. they should have had the voters decide if they wanted to give corporate welfare to billionaires. 🤣🤣🤣😂😂
What's the definition of canceling the deal? Is it considered canceled if the vote is no tomorrow? Or does a no vote mean that the Rays can still build the ballpark on their own dime and retain the 65 acres but if they don't, they forfeit the land?
as a non-Florida based Rays fan, I'm perfectly fine with them relocating elsewhere outside of Florida as long as they continue to be a team and not contracted which i feel might be coming up in the next few years if the A's and Rays can't figure out their stadium situations.
Similar to KC and the Royals. Sherman has a gem of a park and yet doesn't want to fix the concrete problems. He just wants to make Downtown KC traffic worse with a ballpark and Village like St.Louis. KC is always envious of St.Louis and especially the Cardinals and what they have and put on the field.
I seriously doubt the Rays will leave St. Pete there's literally nowhere else to go anyway. Nashville is more concerned about the Titans. Montreal has repurposed their Olympic stadium. SLC is too high altitude. Tampa can only afford the Bucs. There's no place else to go! St. Pete wins!
"SLC is too high altitude"? Really? They also have a high amount of public money on the table - $900 million. The Rays owner would climb Mount Everest to get his grubby hands on all that sweet taxpayer cash.
@@kjhuang nothing the owner can do, he's stuck in Tampa Bay because the MLB awarded the city a team as a thank you to Steinbrenner for doing so much for baseball.
@@SladeBling He's stuck in Tampa Bay because he's addicted to public money (like all the other MLB owners) and St. Pete is one of the few places left where he can get his fix.
Every other major market that could probably support this team better should be furious that Manfred worked to keep this team in Tampa when the city hasn't supported the team for 25 years. If the Rays are short on money to fund their end of the deal it's because their lousy attendance has cost them millions year after year.
There were devoted die hard fans of the Arizona Coyotes hockey team, too. But not enough of them to fill a standard hockey arena of say 15,000. Those fans wanted all sorts of tax payer funded this and that and the organization is just a mess. Sports orgs make gobs of money now, they don't need publicly financed stadiums. Just say No. Yes the Rays will leave... so what?
Your facts are not right. The Ybor deal fell flat in 2018. Also, the Rays did make a definite commitment to St. Petersburg originally with the “Here To Stay” press conference last year, having worked for a year on the Gas Plant site and affirmative votes by both the City and County to support the project. If this falls apart, it’s all on the narrow tunnel vision of Pinellas County.

Brodie covered this in earlier episodes. It was covered up to $25 million, but the initial repair estimate is well over $50 million. Plus, the City of St Pete wants to redevelop this section of their downtown area, and the existing Tropicana Field is too large (and ill-designed) for baseball. It was originally designed as a multi-purpose (football/soccer/baseball) stadium which no team wants to play in anymore.
How many times are you going to cover this topic? You've already stated that if the county doesn't approve the project then the Rays will keep the real prize within the deal, i.e., the ownership to the land in downtown, so you know good and damn well that the county isn't giving away the revenue from owning a multimillion/billion dollar piece of land. You can only beat a dead horse so much.
He’s hoping it fail so it gives Oakland a chance to get the team or think they’ll have someone to trauma bond with… and to think we felt sad and supported them when they lost their team. Go John Fisher and 🖕🏾 Oakland!
Living in Vegas, I don't think we are going to get the A's... The Tropicana in itself is quite small, with little or no parking... Im also not convinced that John Fisher has enough money for it..

Rays deserve to move. They don’t support their team. They are constantly in the bottom-3 of attendance and even during playoff games they average under 20k fans. That’s not worthy of having a pro sports team.
They will be moving in 2028 or 2029! To the stadium that is going to get built across from the Trop
Lol it's called small market for a reason get over it. If you don't live here you opinion doesn't mean squat Rays fans don't care what you have to say
This didn’t age well
I worked on infrastructure projects for both the Trop and Ybor City sites. The ballpark concept was basically the same in both. Makes sense because they didn't know which site would be approved. So, the ballpark doesn't need much tweaking. The "Stadium District" concepts would vary based upon the available land parcels and overall scope of the other uses - hotels, restaurants, offices, residences, etc.
good to know, thank you
@@brodiebrazil NP. Love the channel. Keep up the good work!
The people have too many other things to worry about than a baseball team! Too much hurricane damage!
Agree in the short term. But this (how it ultimately shakes out) is also a pretty big deal in either gain/loss for the long term of the region.
Let’s let the insurance companies worry about the hurricane damage.

I seem to recall Ybor City being in play several years ago but the deal got shot down then. I'd be surprised if they landed there. But you never can tell.
It wasn't "shot down." It was a "Plan B" in case St Pete said "No." St. Pete blinked and started negotiations for a new stadium.
@@plangineer1375 Okay. Truth be told I don't have a dog in the hunt so I'll take your word on it. I do know the current location sucks and building a new stadium there always struck me as a bad idea.
Yes or no just get it done with please
I doubt they will but let’s see!”
This will demonstrate I think though that Tampa Bay as a whole is committed to keeping the team and this will illustrate beyond the shadow of any doubt that the area wants the team and will keep it in some form.
I’ll be listening to the county livestream, hope they vote yes. Need this for my future kids

I'd much rather go to a Tampa Bay Rowdies USL Soccer game than a Rays baseball game any day,
Personally I am of the opinion that the rays should leave Tampa have a fresh start the state of florida is not the best choice for a new stadium ( it has not been a good market for baseball mainly because of attendance ),even if the county approves in the future they would get a booom for a new stadium that would fade very fast as happened with their current stadium I personally would prefer a rebranding go to Oregon and become Portland Navigators and test a new market they could explode when a future expansion comes with its respective realignment geography.
It’s happening. MMW. #RAYSUP
Let’s hope it’s over.
Hopefully No . Just move the team to Orlando .
I think 90%+ of Rays fans would prefer the team move to Tampa
but will settle for the team staying in St. Pete. better than the alternative of Orlando, Nashville, Charlotte, Montreal, Utah, Portland, etc.
How does the 60 acres of land fit into this now?
The Orlando Rays!!!!
These teams are valued in the billions, zero chance they’ll be contracted.
Similar to KC and the Royals. Sherman has a gem of a park and yet doesn't want to fix the concrete problems. He just wants to make Downtown KC traffic worse with a ballpark and Village like St.Louis. KC is always envious of St.Louis and especially the Cardinals and what they have and put on the field.
praying they vote no tomorrow 🙏
A new Brodie video means a good day!
Yes the Rays will leave... so what?
I don’t think they’ll kill it as they’ll want to make the Rays commit to their side of the bargain something we should have done to our exes!!!!

Why can't they just fix the damage? Did the building have no insurance?
Brodie covered this in earlier episodes. It was covered up to $25 million, but the initial repair estimate is well over $50 million. Plus, the City of St Pete wants to redevelop this section of their downtown area, and the existing Tropicana Field is too large (and ill-designed) for baseball. It was originally designed as a multi-purpose (football/soccer/baseball) stadium which no team wants to play in anymore.
Lets Go Rays!!
Billionaire Welfare Vote Yes Save a Billionaire.
