@@kofuzi Sure. And there are so many other reviewer's stating that they find the shoe to be much more of an uptempo shoe than a workhorse and/or easy run shoe. It's the same when I hear people mention that it runs very wide in the midfoot and forefoot areas (which it does) and mention that they still wouldn't go down a size because it fits true to size and would be too short in length but always fail to mention that you can go with the women's shoe instead for men with narrower feet (sadly I don't believe there is an option for women to do something similar or have a narrower option) and they still share the same colour ways. @@kofuzi as someone who has fitted 100s of people in newbalance's, it's not a rare miss. Thanks for the video. I feel like the Rebel peaked at the V2, minus the easy-rip upper. The over-engineered new upper is too thick for Florida. I feel like NB ruined the Rebel in the same way Skechers ruined the Razor.
Such a different perspective than other reviewers I have seen. Many, if not most, loved the changes made in the v.4 and did not like the v.3. I haven't loved the v.3 either. My preference was the v.2. Anyway, I won't buy another v.3, so hopefully the v.4 works for me. Thanks for the review and your advice on sizing.
Is this drifting more into Beacon territory if they're firmer now? I've enjoyed the Beacon v1, Tempo v2, and Rebel V2 over the years...I've tended to grab those for what I might would call "fartlek days"...a progression run during the week, or a run that includes some strides in it because they help me practice my up-tempo form without aid, but generally not shoes I'd pick for a structured workout day.
Awsome review. Interesting that NB went with a peba/eva blend vs the TPE or TPU of the previous models. EVA generally is temperature sensitive and hardens up in colder weather. It would be interesting to see if it softens up in a warmer setting like an indoor tredmill session or warmer climate?
Great review, Mike. I've liked NB's fuel cell composition in previous versions of the Rebel. I definitely have to get this shoe on my feet to see if I like the new composition of the foam. I do like the added width, I felt previous versions of the Rebel were just a bit snug.
I love the look of the v4, but im not very enthusiastic about buying it. I loved the v2 and v3. I actually got some of my fastest times in the rebel v.s. any other shoe. It handled strides, tempo, progression runs, easy runs. And the fuel cell midsole is something special to me. I may have to try and seek out some v3 if i can still find them in my size.
@@padrinio80 when I need a daily trainer again I'll pick it up. I just feel with a name like "rebel" they should have moved in a different direction - keep it light, fun and fast
Disappointed to hear that the progressive boring-ification of daily trainers continues. I was mostly concerned with how much more fragile peba is, but to hear you describe it as pudding-y is not encouraging. I'd still be interested in your 100 mile review. Now looking forward to your Elite V4 review. I think it's a huge step backwards aesthetically from the V3 (with the stylized bird wing logos), but maybe that just means I'll be able to get V3 at a great price.
I've been a fan of the Rebel since the first version and like the look of this new version, but I'm disappointed that it seems like NB is moving further away from the original design of the Rebel. I don't like how wide this shoe looks to be, and how these shoe companies keep adding more and more stack to shoes. I really liked how the older versions felt so nimble, lower to the ground, and flexible/comfortable without a plate...pretty much a do everything, general purpose running shoe. I've been looking forward to the v4 release since my v3s are falling apart... hopefully these won't disappoint.
yeah, it feels like while pursuing the "comfiness / stability" race, NB has forgotten the Rebel DNA was a very slick, minimalist and nimble shoe... I would have never imagine a reviewer using the word "cumbersome" to describe a Rebel shoe...!
@@francoisbouchet9907 @jeffdorsey85 it's so frustrating how so many brands are deserting the lightweight, uptempo trainer. The only uptempo trainers left anymore are plated trainers, and I still like to run with lightweight trainers occasionally, Saucony Kinvara is just too harsh for me. NB always had wide fitting options unlike most brands, but now everything is just a day trainer.
@@francoisbouchet9907💯 agree with all of your points! The word cumbersome stood out to me as well 😬...hopefully the SC Pacer will stay true to it's DNA.
Many reviewers talk about how this is wider and more volume, how does this fit compared to the new SC elite since the fuel cell line seems to share colors and design? As a wider higher volume fit runner I’m very excited that something other than altra might fit.
there are two kinds of wide to discuss here: fit and footprint for those concerned about fit: I do discuss fit at length in this video. plus, v3 was available in wide sizing. I anticipate (but don't know for sure) that v4 will become available in wide sizing eventually. however, what I'm talking about is footprint. how wide is the amount of foam that you are standing on. it changes the experience of the shoe dramatically
Ah, the New Balance 880 I liked 2 for what it was. I liked that I could use the 3 for more than one type of run. I'm sure the 4 will be fine too. However, as a saga, they confuse me.
Emily Sisson will run in the NB SC Pacer this weekend in Orlando for the Olympic marathon trials. (Maybe not the exact model we can get though.) Will be interesting to see that shoe.
I feel like it’s a problem when one of your best athletes never races in a stock shoe. Problem is easily solved by just giving the public what Emily likes.
Finally! A shoe review that didn't include the words 'gusseted' and 'lockdown'. I have been waiting for someone to pull this off, and Kofuzi comes through!
Kofuzi, is it safe to say that Fuel Cell has been canceled out? I feel like they went peba with all their shoes in 2024, firming their entire lineup. I love peba, but i also like the bounce and squish of Fuel Cell. The squish is gone 😢
maybe yes maybe no. I don't think fuel cell has been slightly different across shoes within the same year and across the same shoe over different years. it's always been about sensation and not compound, as far as how New Balance seems to characterize FuelCell
Looking forward to seeing a 100 mile review as well! Looks like the review runs have been done in colder temps. Do you find that your thoughts can change on a shoe as weather warms up? In terms of midsole, cushion, responsiveness, etc.
can cold have any effect at all on a shoe? sure. will warmth cause such an effect as to change my overall opinion on a shoe? I wouldn't say it's impossible, but it's never happened before
I have gone through 3 pairs of the Novablast 3 and 1 pair of the Rebel v3. Now with the new models I'm not sure which one to pick up. I'm more intrigued by the new Rebel v4, but which one would you recommend?
Great review as always. So i have to search for a better tempo shoe that is not to narrow. Any recommendations? At the moment the cielo road is in my focus.
i appreciate your video. i thought of the rebel in the same category as the hyperion max/tempo. having gone through two pairs of that already i was waiting for the rebel v4 to be a good replacement, but i'm not so sure now
Hi Kofuzi. Good review. How you would compare this new NB Rebel 4 shows vs Puma Deviate Nitro 2 as a daily training , can do everything shoes? Which one you would pick ? I have Pumas and I did almost 600K in them this winter and I really like them. Of course they are plated but still flexible and responsive. I was considering NB as a next daily training shoes, however now in the UK the Pumas are available for almost 1/2 price of the NBs. thanks
Was really wanting to pair these with my 1080v13 for a faster day/workout non plated shoe from NB. They kinda fall into the same daily trainer (albeit in different spectrums) category.
my first reaction is to say no (the glideride is a bit more controlling with the center channel), but there is some similarity in the way the foam responds where the comparison does make some sense
Revel 4 v the best for me, very friendly with my knees hips in general my legs , after many years with problems in my left knee, I can said welcome long runs with some different gears of speed as my condition permits , I got last week a track without when I reach 240 spm,
Great review, thanks! I'll have to load up on a couple v3's before their gone. Seems like this category of shoe, the fun, up-tempo, plate-less trainer is going away, like the number of new cars offered with a manual transition. Not enough of a consumer base? Maybe I'll try the streakfly. Any recommends for a v3 replacement? Just like an exciting flexible no fuss shoe?
@@tomverdich184 wats the dif between liberate nitro/deviate and velocity nitro 2? also can i ask, r tempo shoes with no carbon plate more 'forgiving' than tempo shoes with a carbon plate? whats the reason ppl dislike carbon plates in their uptempo shoes?
@@io-rj6sk personally I try to avoid plates in my uptempo shoes for a couple reasons. First I like to have a shoe thats fun to turn over but not giving too much performance help, so when I switch to a plated or "rod - ed" shoe for dedicated workouts it feels more pop - y (thats probably purely psychological) The more tangible reasons are I alternate tempo days with hill reps and I really like light weight, very flexible shoes for hills so its nice to have a shoe that can double for both and I often try to squeeze in tempo sessions on lunch breaks where I'm on uneven sidewalks, or pausing for traffic for part of the run and don't really need a set it and forget it experience
Actually went from Novablast 1 to Rebel v2 to Novablast 3 as my daily trainer! Idk what I'm choosing next, but it's definitely gonna be one of the new iteration of those two lines! I think the rebel V2 was the most fun to run in, hope NB and Asics will go back to making those "chaotic" shoes in the future!
@@gabdg828 any dailies that come close to the rebel v2? also does the sizing for rebel v2 fit the same for rebel v3? for example i wear US 10 for rebel v3. i read that the v2 is narrower and going half a size up is recommended. so if i wanted to try them and buy on ebay would size 10.5 be ideal?
Would either work for speed walking or half jog at a good pace for a little then walk some . Trying to get back to where I. was in December before total knee replacement surgery or should I go with new balance more v4 or 1080v13. Or other suggestions. I need them to be under 8mm , preferably 4 to 5 mm drop
I'm concerned with the way so many companies are nerfing their non-plated uptempo shoes. I loved the Rebelv3, but you cannot get it anymore where I live, and you cannot order it in my size in Canada. For whatever reason none of the local running stores where I live stock Adidas (or Nike) shoes, and the Takumi Sen is basically unavailable online from the Canadian site. How would the Hoka Mach 6 work as a possible alternative? From the sounds of it, they've actually made that one a little more of a tempo shoe than the v5.
#Kofuzi. Do you think this version can handle the long slower runs. 13-18 milers? I have V3 now and it seems like 10 miles is where it starts to feel compressed and my body start to take a beating.
Getting back into running after 10 years...looking for a cruiser with bounce to increase the "fun" factor and keep me interested in running. FC rebel V4 or Novablast 4?
Good review. I definitely plan to try the Rebel v4 as I'm an unabashed NB fanboy, but this shoe seems like such a major departure from my beloved v3 that I've stocked up on multiple pairs of it with the recent sales going on. Never got to try the v2 and I know that many Rebel lovers say that's "The One", but the v3 does a lot of things very well considering its lower stack and minimalism compared to all these super trainers coming out these days. I also love the Takumi Sen 8/9 for the workouts, so I don't expect the Rebel v4 to take on that role. Seems like a jack-of-all-trades shoe but which does certain things better than others. Interested in knowing how the foam holds up after 100 miles. I haven't had any durability issues with the v3 as some have reported and I know there are concerns about how long the v4 will hold its bounce and responsiveness.
Hi Kofuzi, I had a pair of Mach 5 and it is still fresh. Usually just to have 5 - 10 km run twice a week. I am looking for a pair of shoes to train in tempo run or interval, should I go for the Rebel V4, or should I go with something like ASICS magic speed 3 / Takumi Sen? Thank you!
Best would be to try them on, as the foams feel quite different. But the Rebel 4 has a wider footprint, so I would go with that if you have to choose one without trying either

Tried the rebel v3 but felt there was not enough cushion for heavier runners like me. Is there better cushion on v4 with more stacked height?
End of this video, I feel like you have been frozen. 😮Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this shoes.
Loved the Rebel v2. Decided for the Rincon 3 instead of the rebel v4.
Great point
Great review, Mike. I've liked NB's fuel cell composition in previous versions of the Rebel. I definitely have to get this shoe on my feet to see if I like the new composition of the foam. I do like the added width, I felt previous versions of the Rebel were just a bit snug.
Previous versions, as with many NB shoes, were available in a wide fit. (at least in North America)
Thanks for the review. I’m considering buying it. I guess I need to test it in my running shops Love the grind. Merch from Philly?
I love the look of the v4, but im not very enthusiastic about buying it. I loved the v2 and v3. I actually got some of my fastest times in the rebel v.s. any other shoe. It handled strides, tempo, progression runs, easy runs. And the fuel cell midsole is something special to me. I may have to try and seek out some v3 if i can still find them in my size.
The same here I had 2 pairs of V2s 1 pair of V3 and will buy another for sure cause I don’t like what I’m hearing about the V4 !
They should relabel FuelCell to FC 2.0 to warn people.
I feel like everyone loved peba but complained way way too much about a lack of durability, and so they "fixed" it.
we did this to ourselves
@@kofuziyep. Careful what you wish for.
@@francoisbouchet9907 any modern day shoes that fit the 'slick/minimalist/nimble' shoe?
@@francoisbouchet9907💯 agree with all of your points! The word cumbersome stood out to me as well 😬...hopefully the SC Pacer will stay true to it's DNA.
Many reviewers talk about how this is wider and more volume, how does this fit compared to the new SC elite since the fuel cell line seems to share colors and design? As a wider higher volume fit runner I’m very excited that something other than altra might fit.
there are two kinds of wide to discuss here: fit and footprint
for those concerned about fit: I do discuss fit at length in this video. plus, v3 was available in wide sizing. I anticipate (but don't know for sure) that v4 will become available in wide sizing eventually.
however, what I'm talking about is footprint. how wide is the amount of foam that you are standing on. it changes the experience of the shoe dramatically
Ok thank you
Ah, the New Balance 880
I liked 2 for what it was.
@@kofuzi THIS!!! Why are 'we' not worthy?!?! :)
Fantom Fit was a NB thing back in 2014. These look almost identical to the 860v5
I wouldn't say it's impossible, but it's never happened before
@@kofuzimost midsole’s will soften in warmer temp. And harden in colder temps. Which changes the responsiveness.
We bought one pair in Singapure on size 10 and they have 270g! Is this possible???
I don't have enough information to answer this question
Vocês aqui?? hahahahah que daora! abraços, já espero o review de vocês também!!!
I have gone through 3 pairs of the Novablast 3 and 1 pair of the Rebel v3. Now with the new models I'm not sure which one to pick up. I'm more intrigued by the new Rebel v4, but which one would you recommend?
So is this somewhat like the saucony speeds?
I wish you had compared this to Ride 17 (given its updated foam) instead of the Mach X or just as an additional comparison.
Great review as always. So i have to search for a better tempo shoe that is not to narrow. Any recommendations? At the moment the cielo road is in my focus.
i appreciate your video. i thought of the rebel in the same category as the hyperion max/tempo. having gone through two pairs of that already i was waiting for the rebel v4 to be a good replacement, but i'm not so sure now
Loving the Philly Bowden T Shirt!
@thomaselwin9397 if you don't lose the extra "L" you can't use her discount code.
How does it compare with the hoka mach 6?
Loving the t-shirt!!
Loved the 3 , 100% getting these !
enjoy!
I had to buy the V2 and V3 1/2 a size up from my already 1/2 sized up running size. Maybe they've overcorrected this year?
Your description of your running experience reminds me of how I felt with the Asics GlideRide 3. Would you compare these shoes to each other?
my first reaction is to say no (the glideride is a bit more controlling with the center channel), but there is some similarity in the way the foam responds where the comparison does make some sense
Just like an exciting flexible no fuss shoe?
adizero 8? unless rods is a no-go
Topo Cyclone 2, Liberate Nitro 2, Adios 8, Streakfly, Asics Hyperspeed, Brooks Hyperion, Saucony Sinister
Kinvara 13, Hoka Cielo Road
Rebel v2 is my favourite daily trainer of all time, so fun
@@gabdg828 any dailies that come close to the rebel v2?
also does the sizing for rebel v2 fit the same for rebel v3? for example i wear US 10 for rebel v3. i read that the v2 is narrower and going half a size up is recommended. so if i wanted to try them and buy on ebay would size 10.5 be ideal?
Is the rebel v4 suitable for heel strikers?
What about vs 1080v13 or deviate nitro 2?
Would either work for speed walking or half jog at a good pace for a little then walk some . Trying to get back to where I. was in December before total knee replacement surgery or should I go with new balance more v4 or 1080v13. Or other suggestions. I need them to be under 8mm , preferably 4 to 5 mm drop
Love the look!!
Mike, wouldn’t the sc pacer 2 be the tempo shoe form nb?
Apart from the price issue, do you prefer it or the Adizero SL?
I'm concerned with the way so many companies are nerfing their non-plated uptempo shoes. I loved the Rebelv3, but you cannot get it anymore where I live, and you cannot order it in my size in Canada. For whatever reason none of the local running stores where I live stock Adidas (or Nike) shoes, and the Takumi Sen is basically unavailable online from the Canadian site.
How would the Hoka Mach 6 work as a possible alternative? From the sounds of it, they've actually made that one a little more of a tempo shoe than the v5.
I have not tried the mach 6
#Kofuzi. Do you think this version can handle the long slower runs. 13-18 milers? I have V3 now and it seems like 10 miles is where it starts to feel compressed and my body start to take a beating.
I would say yes, but I also enjoyed my v3 up to 20 miles for easy long runs
Great review! How do you think the Rebel v4 compares to the Endorphin Speed 4?
I have not tested endo speed 4
Getting back into running after 10 years...looking for a cruiser with bounce to increase the "fun" factor and keep me interested in running.
FC rebel V4 or Novablast 4?
Both are great. I’d go with the novablast
Thank you!
Mach 5 was born for speed training like tempo or intervals
Thanks for the video. Can you recommend which would be a better one for all day walking and standing, This or 10880 v13? Thanks
Best would be to try them on, as the foams feel quite different.
But the Rebel 4 has a wider footprint, so I would go with that if you have to choose one without trying either
Ran 7 miles in them today. Felt like a mini superblast
Which one you recommend between rebel v4 vs 1080 v13. I am easy runner. Not looking for speed. Just enjoy easy pace 😊
Both are great and amongst the best in class.
Choose the one that feels better to you.
I’m thinking of getting the rebel v4 and pair it with the superblast, would it be a rotation that make sense?
yes
@@kofuzi thanks!
Skip the v4 and just stick with Superblast. SB is leagues better than the Rebel line in terms of versatility.
So the volume is high in this shoe, sounds interesting to me
Hi! Is the rebel v4 good for marathon? I ran my marathons with the v1-v2-v3 but this year I wanted to change to “more marathon” shoes (ex: boston 12)
yes
How does the NB Rebel v4 compare to the Hoka Mach 6?
