    Mr. Baxter, thank u for posting ur invaluable voice lessons on youtube. I'm a "professional" singer here in Egypt & I have damaged my voice from misuse of my voice. I didn't follow any techniques, sang 7 nights a week, 3 hrs a night. It was worse than ur $ illustration. I tried ENT's, Laryngologists, u name it. Since the last 2 weeks I've been taking lessons from u & I'm already beginning to feel the difference. Thank u & God bless u.

    I love this perspective. I have auditory processing differences but also near perfect pitch, so it tends to be the content but can also be the volume depending and people are always telling me that when I have my headphones on (which allow me to understand people better due to the noise cancelling) that I dont talk loud enough. Im always self conscious about my voice and how loud I am especially when I cant quite tell, like with my headphones on, but youve given me a much more useful perspective Im going to try practicing thank you.

    WHAT?????! I said.... Exactly. Good Job Mark. I agree. Ear plugs work great for me. Playing in a "Metal" band with 2 guitarists is like wearing 100 Watt Headphones on 10. And the hard hitting drummer directly behind me.... There's no way my voice can compete with that. I found ear plugs not only prevent hearing loss and weird after affects, but help me sing with a relaxed voice. I don't have to strain to reach the intended notes. I have more endurance onstage. I chose ear plugs over Audio Tone and quality. Danny Knight - CROWN OF EARTH.

    Thank you Mark for this wonderful video. I have been battling literally with engineers regarding not hearing my monitors on stage as well as competing with my drummer and guitarist. I actually started wearing good in ear monitors as earplugs not only to protect my hearing but also to hear what I am singing. I think though part of my issue is still not being able to hear what I am singing sometimes. However, watching this video has provided me with faith because no matter what happens I don't want to blow my voice and lose my hearing.

    I completely agree Kevin - wearing two is isolating at first. My problem when I was performing was that both sides of the stage were incredibly loud! My ears were still ringing next day when teaching so I had to do something. When I first used two my band complained that I wasn't singing hard enough - so I recorded the rehearsals until I found the right feel. Not hearing the audience was weird also - but it made me focus on the songs more (because I used to be a total whore for applause!)

    have been doing this instinctively for the past few months and has helped me alot. But some soundguys told me it as wrong (!!) so I'm pretty happy to find this video! you just have to ''act'' more on stage cause you lose a bit of touch with the loudness of the gig and the feeling that comes with it .but its a small price to pay for not blowing out your voice especially in awful clubs with no monitors at all!

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  10 лет назад +2

      Sound guys aren't on stage - and they aren't singing! Record your gigs (and rehearsals) in order to see where you're holding back. If you're singing rock then you'll be screaming and singing aggressively at times. The point is to do so because that's how the song goes - not because you're drowning in the mix! Sing hard because you want to - not because you have to.

And i also found myself questioning whether i sounded good because i couldn't hear my vocal coming from the monitor.

      It's a small speaker (or earplug) facing the singer (instead of the audience) so the singer can "monitor" what he or she sounds like.

      Amanda Lyons I have every type of custom ear plug (and spent a lot for them!) and I highly recommend you get the cheap foam ones that you roll between your fingers and let expand in your ears. They reduce the sound by 31 dB's and always stay put. They real challenge is re-training your brain to the dull sound. Keep record yourself singing with plugs in until you sound natural.

  • @voicelessondotcom
    @voicelessondotcom  11 лет назад

    It works less with the musician plugs - and to me - the soft plugs are more comfortable. No matter what you choose, it takes time to get used to how they feel and sound. The only thing that doesn't change is that the volume of a band on a club stage or rehearsal room is a hazardous environment. Protect your hearing.

    Hi Mark. I've been singing since I was 14yrs old (now I'm 24) without vocal coach and proper training and I was able to reach high notes of Celine Dion and Whitney Houston. And I can sing 15 or more songs thrice a week, before. I also sing even in dawn before like for a month because we have a Dawn prayer and I have to lead a worship every 4am. But I stopped singing just last year because I think I abused it because I notice that my voice got easily sounds hoarse after I sing one song. My voice now is just different as I attempt to sing high notes like "Listen by Beyonce". And after I sing 1 song, I feel like there is something in my throat that's like swollen or there's mucus (been suffering for the "mucus like" for 9months I think) Then when I attempt again to sing high notes, it sounds hoarse and it's hard for me to control my breathing. I want to push it to reach the note that I want but it sounds worse. By the way I tried to rest my voice whole week, but it's still the same. What will be the resolution for this sir? I hope you can help me.. 😭 Or is there any chance for my original voice to come back? 😭😭😭

    • @voicelessondotcom

      The good news is you have never really worked on your singing as a skill - so there is a lot of room for growth. First step is to explore your ability with vocal exercises instead of songs. Click on the "playlist" tab on this channel and work with the warmup exercises. That will take the emotional pressure away and allow you to discover better ways to coordinate when singing. But like learning to play any instrument - it will take time. Be patient!

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  2 года назад

      Yup - I got the same complaint from my band when I started using them. I recorded band practices and discovered they were right. So I sang with more energy which felt weird at first but sounded better on the recordings. With practice, I adjusted the way I sang with plugs so my voice was the same and my hearing was saved. Win/win. Give it time and record yourself often. If you sing in a loud band it will save your voice and your hearing.

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  6 лет назад +1

      Yes - that's very normal - because the sound DOES suck when wearing ear plugs. The point is that al least the sound is consistent wherever you sing (and your hearing is protected). You will eventually get used to the muffled sound of plugs and learn to sing within your means - rather than be lured to push because of the acoustics of a room. Stick with it - you'll love it.

      @@tifahxx I completely understand! It's just a few cigarettes a day - it's just one more drink - it's just a few more calories. It's hard to conceive how small justifications add up - until it's too late to change their cost. I love loud music - but unfortunately it doesn't love me. So I wear ear plugs to reduce the assault to the system.

      If you're going to use them - yes - use them all the time. That way your reference stays consistent. It took me a few months to really get accustomed to the dull sound - but once incorporated your voice will always sound the same to you.

    it seems like everything works against a singer...so much to deal with... loud guitars, bass, drums, bad acoustics at shows,...what else?...i just get sick of it...

      I hear ya...when things aren't going perfect I just bump up my performance... ham it up a tad...wish the system would bend to us more...but I love this video I've watched a few times...finding some comfort in it...
