yeah im really scared of a creature that is 3000 feet below water. The chances of me running into it are so big that im practically already dead. That is the power of THE SQUID OF LEGEND
Now that is a monster! After all this time we fianally have an image of a giant squid alive and in it's natural habitat. I never thought they'd pull it off.
This is why I've chosen to get a degree in Marine Biology, the waters on our planet are some of the most mysterious and magnificent places holding secrets that no one has ever even thought to conjure up in their imaginations!
I love how right after he finishes describing how Japanese film crews had to make HUNDREDS of attempts at depths over half a mile deep to just get a glimpse of this thing, he begins talking about being cautious about taking a swim in 15 feet of water. As if being snatched up by a giant squid in any body of water has a high probability.
There are way bigger ones thats average size, human males average size is about 5'8 to 5'11 but humans have grown to 8ft plus. We have caught on tape squids believed to be 100 ft plus but without something to compare it to its hard to tell. We hear noises from animals in the deep sea all the time unknown to us yet, search the bloop, its a sound from a living creature made from something that was way bigger than a blue whale which is the largest sea creature we have found yet, there is still 95% of the ocean we havnt explored yet imagine what could be at the depths of 4000 and 5000 feet, there are trenches in the ocean going down 10000+ feet. We know more about mars then we do about our own ocean.
Ethan Goulart the bloop had to be from a living creature. It would have to be an extremely huge ice quake for the sound to travel that far, and if it was that huge surely it would have been recorded or documented somehow.
Actually there are many instances of the giant squid being caught for example in 2003 a complete subadult female was found near the surface with a total length of 6 m (20 ft)
Justified Homicide The issue is that nothing large could possibly survive so deep, anything so deep would have to be extremely small to survive the pressure
The existence of giant squids have been a scientific fact for quite some time now. We just didn't know much of anything about them except that they existed.
That eye.... It's both scary, beautiful and spooky.... It's like eyeballing a monkey or a dog. It's SOMEONE looking at you.... It's more than an animal. It's aware, sensitive, complex. It's a person. Freaky as hell.
that would be correct if thats what they did as they known about these for a while as carcases of dead ones have washed ashore before. Besides this one was only around 25 ft long and that thing you are talking about was some rig they set up to fool the squid into thinking it was food or food near by which obviously worked, as they tried to replicate a jelly fish with that rig.
Yeah, because that large, deep-sea submarine capable of holding an entire team of researchers in the background of the black and white video is actually just the size of a tennis ball, right?
well actually they had a submarine that could hold at the most three or four people that kind of looked like a bubble, and connected to the submarine was the light orb machine made to attract the squid and was set further apart from the sub
well i remember when i was kid, some people didnt even think these creatures were real. but then they found a carcass, then a live one (that they promptly killed and dissected) so finally seeing a video of it in its natural habitat doing what it naturally does IS super exciting! and im not even a nerd for this stuff. its just cool watching the mystery unfold because we still know very little about giant and collosal squid.
Im only 14 but ever since i was around 9 i always wanted to see a giant squid and this has made my week and also the second shot of it is so creepy it looks like its looking at you :O
Oh, sorry my last comment was wrong, I just saw the scene on the Discovery channel show about it. The squid in the black and white footage was actually about 11 feet long, and that sphere, that i thought was their submarine on the show, was actually a device that flashes lights to attract the squid. (The show is on right now, so I only caught bits and pieces)
Giant squids have never been filmed before because whenever camera crews would turn on the light, because the water down there was pitch black, the squid would swim away before they could get footage, but it was recently discovered that giant squids are blind to the red spectrum of light, so if they used a red light, they could film the squid. This is the first ever recorded footage of a living giant squid.
Yes,I have..I personally believe that most if not all "mythical" bests had a basis in reality..some of them,I'm not sure, but the Kraken..yes,definitely
You do realise that the camera also has to be waterproof, resistant to high pressure and able to record a video in pitch darkness? It's a one in a million chance to recording a giant squid anyway, so this is a breakthrough
"Google is for the lazy generation." "The best thing to do is do the homework yourself." So you're suggesting that in order to find out how far down a giant squid swims, I shouldn't look to Google for the answer, but instead I should go out and find the answer myself. Brilliant.
I mean this is just incredible. Forget the cheesy ass reporter. We finally have a slab of footage of one of the most elusive creatures on Earth. Just amazing. Goes to show how little we really know about this planet.
Well, to the perspective of human beings, that thing is pretty damn big. Keep in mind that adult humans only grow to around 6 ft. tall. The giant squid can reach lengths of 40-50 feet. That's 6.666 (8.333) times our height. Sure, there are bigger things, but keep in mind that most cephalopods attain lengths of maybe a few inches, and only some (like the Giant Pacific Octopus) attain a length of over 10 feet.
If they wanted to film a giant squid so badly they could have just came and asked me to pull down my pants. I got some giant tentacles for them!... wait.. that joke was a lot funnier in my head and didn't at all turn out the way I wanted it to.
"Caught on tape" Ahh yes the old catch the squid in tape trick, The ultimate move. Now, Hold him still so i can attack. (Assuming that they caught it in reels of tape)

They are claiming that this is the first time caught on video. Scott Cassel, though he tells some tall tales, has been capturing these creatures on video since the early '90s.
I saw a show on the TV yesterday about giant squids and it said we are fucked. The reason being is that they reproduce extremely fast, they are ridiculously aggressive, they can shred a marlin in a matter of seconds, and they are also getting curious and moving closer to coastal waters.
I read the part when you said you were backing me up. Just because I didn't mention it doesn't mean I hadn't acknowledged that. All I was saying was that I had forgotten about this whole conversation because it was so long ago. I wasn't trying to come off as mean or upset. Let's just agree that we were originally on the same side. :)
You don’t need to worry about the kraken. It usually stays in deep waters during the day. And even when it does come to the surface that only happens in waters that are miles away from shore. Attacks on boats are very rare

I just watched the documentary and it was amazing.
Neither the news reporters nor most of the commentors appreciate how amazing this actually is.
Crazy nice to know that there's unique creatures out there still
Amazing...I can't wait until we find something that is just an absolute monster.
Why all the dislikes? Are people genuinely oblivious to how amazing this type of thing is?
Thanks! Now that you mention it I only recall snapshots of it feeding, not a full length clear video like this one.
I remember seeing this when it first aired!
I feel a Zelda boss battle coming on...
Nah sea of thieves kraken
You're absolutely right. Hopefully there will be more details in the Discovery presentation. :)
