NEWS UPDATE ON TONY'S SITE: Tony has re-joined Planet X - the band will be heading into the studio later this year for a new album and tour! More info as it comes to hand.
@5amuu Yeah well...it all changed again. Tony is still with the band but the tour & album have been postponed. They did play in Spain this year. You can follow the news on the official Planet X messageboard.
DT is not simple music and MP is very good drummer (one of the greatest of all time) and it is not going to change anything if You try to bash them. 99,9% of other's is laughing to this kind of discussion :)
What happened to the rest of this concert?? U used to be able to see the whole thing on you tube? If any one has it can they please PLEASE upload it! These guys are my favourite band!
roddoliver, have you listened to the Planet X records? The material is MILES beyond anything Dream Theater has ever done technically, with the exception of Dance of Eternity. Stylistically, Planet X has much more in common with jazz/rock fusion (Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Bruford, U.K., etc.) than progressive rock. Check out the current footage from the PSMS tour in Moscow where Portnoy says Derek Sherinian's "Apocalypse 1470" is one of the toughest songs he's PLAYED or HEARD.
@CKnoxW I try to avoid using the word 'better' when we're talking about 'super musicians', but I could listen to Tony 24/7... Steve gets boring after 5 minutes unless I specifically want to watch him do insanely difficult technical stuff.
MacAlpine has shown himself to be more musically versatile than Petrucci, and has demonstrated this in his solo albums and Planet X, the latter of which plays almost completely atonal, really complex Progressive Fusion, his playing is absolutely amazing on both Planet X albums but that's not to say Petrucci CAN'T play like that. MacAlpine being a free agent has had more freedom to write whatever he wants whereas Petrucci being commited to DT mainly writes in that style.
@CKnoxW you cant say that vai is better and vice versa... because they both are musicians but they are playing different music styles, it's like in soccer team's two player, one is defender and another is striker, who will be better it depends on situation. sorry for my bad English!
Tony is one of these guitar players that is just so monstrous but that you don't hear about quite as much as you'd like to...to me, he's every bit as technically gifted as petrucci and has the same great sensibilities as holdsworth...and what's the point of angling your keys forward like that? I've seen the dude from strato do it...is it a wrist thing?
@CKnoxW I know lots of people won't agree with me but i agree with you about the guitar. Gavin Harrison Is better than Virgil Donati on the skins IMHO. And both Planet x and Porcupine Tree need more promotion!
@reanimatorhead no, Derek was kicked out of the band because they thought Jordan was a better fit. And no again, Portnoy never said that he is the best. He ALWAYS says there are no bests only favorites. Get your stuff right.
Technically, they are both astounding, that's not up for debate. I'm sure if Petrucci was given the chance to write/play something more in the vein of Progressive Fusion/Jazz he could, but so far he hasn't had the chance to do so. But based on what I've listened to from both guitarists, MacAlpine has shown himself to be more versatile.
@sacha9646 lol. you just compared them yourself. why don't we just say that "some people dig Vai more that T-mac and some people dig T-mac more than Vai"
@CKnoxW YEEEAH!!!! There are a million better guitarists than Vai, but he's a commercial goldmine. He's what I call a "kids" guitar hero, but then you realise guys like John McLaughlin, Holdsworth et al can do the quick stuff minus the distortion to disguise the "shred-bluffing"
First of all, comparing Donati/MacAlpine/Sherinian to Portnoy/Petrucci/Rudess (or whatever) is petty and immature. The fact that Mike Portnoy is currently doing a sold-out tour of Europe and Asia WITH Derek Sherinian, Tony MacAlpine and Billy Sheehan speaks volumes about his respect for their abilities. And all due respect, roddoliver, if you watch footage of Mike Portnoy attempting the Planet X song Apocalypse 1470 B.C., on the current PSMS tour, he "struggles" quite a bit himself!
@CKnoxW SORRY I REALLY HAVE TO DISAGREE with you on that one.....Tony is AMAZING, but Steve Vai is from another planet...but your entitled to your opinion....
I agree and disagree. I believe Vai is a lot more expressive, and really speaks through his guitar, while McAlpine is a lot more technical and faster. They both are in my top ten, though. Great Guitarists! I'm not trying to bash your opinion, man, i'm just saying =)
No, unfortunately, I have heard nothing else about that album. Although I have faithfully followed Tony throughout his solo career, I feel that he has all but abandoned it.
Disagree. I find Tony's solo stuff much more musical and expressive. Vai is one of those guys that is abit further "out there" in general than Tony. I like Vai's tone better though, it's monsterous. Both are amazing players. I find Tony to be more "musical" and Vai to be well, almost alien in his approach.
DT is simple music compared to Planet X music. Anyone that is a drummer and knows both bands good can tell you. Yes MP is on of the greatest of all time but he doesnt come CLOSE to Virgil donati. I am not saying anyne sucks, they are all so good, but COMPARED to virgil donati, mike is a joke.
This is good and all but the whining about who is better is annoying..Personally I hear a little Joe Satriani style from T-Mac..Thats OK by me Satch is on of my favorite players..He and Eric Johnson are the reason I bought G3..Vai is ok but too much of a showoff in my book..He was good in Alcatraz though..Got everything Johnson and Satriani have done..Only Vai I have IS G3..JS and EJ make me want to be a better player..Just saying..hope no one gets butt hurt from my comments..OMG its just YT....
Macalpine is far better guitarist than petrucci in every way.Sherinian was fired from Dream Theater because he was writing in other direction like you see in Planet X.And If we talk about influence i can say Planet X was influenced by bands like Return to Forever.Bands of the early 1970's.Bands that if you knew beside dream theater you might have a better view on things.Go take some lessons so you can actually have some knowledge to form an educated opinion.
Be ashamed. Planet X obliterates the material of dream theater. Dream theater is a joke compare to them. Is like saying, (in difficulty) metallica is a joke compared to dream theater... Well Dream theater is a joke ^ 3930 compared to Planet X. lol Plain AND SIMPLE.
I didn't know Planet X had gigs so many centuries ago :D
Dream Theater is the britney spears of progressive rock.Planet X is the Chuck Norris.
yeah that's the live in Bulgaria, I love this live even though the quality is quite bad ... can't wait to see them on tour later this year
In the first seconds, Tony seems to be playing pure gibberish... But he wasn't....
Pure genius!
Beautiful Insanity!!!
Planet X Rules ! \m/
excelent song!
reminds me of a cross between Dream Theater and King Crimson... awesome!
Holy crap!

@capriboy2o
Vai is incredible, his whammybar technique is second to none, And he can play the acoustic really well to.
YEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!
great!!
Plus, according to Donati in an interview, Tony's putting out a new album, which Donati said that he is playing on.
@awaken77 yes, on both a studio album and a live album
Great Song :-O
hell yea!
Mahavishnu would've been like... - "What?"
just kidding
@CKnoxW I completely agree.
@awaken77 he was talking about a live concert DVD
@5amuu

@CKnoxW tahts because Steve Vai is from another planet And Tony MacAlpine is from another dimension juts like buckethead
@CKnoxW Thank you finally someone sees things my way!!
What happened to the rest of this concert?? U used to be able to see the whole thing on you tube? If any one has it can they please PLEASE upload it! These guys are my favourite band!
@middlenut3 -- Yeah, it's his band. He's way ahead of them now.
@ironwold dude such a good comment hahaha i would kill to see planet x live. i seen behold it wasnt nothin
is that freakin dream theater's old keyboard dude?
Derek Sherinian, a keyboard prodigy

@CBR1000FJ great news!
@CKnoxW You could be right or wrong theres no really a way to measure if someones is better or dont, I like both
@CKnoxW Vai is more for kicks and entertainment where as MacAlpine is just overall incredible at guitar, as good on piano as well which is scary
@antibulletdodger101
does it exist on studio albums?
@CKnoxW I try to avoid using the word 'better' when we're talking about 'super musicians', but I could listen to Tony 24/7... Steve gets boring after 5 minutes unless I specifically want to watch him do insanely difficult technical stuff.
Dose any one know what kind of guitar is tony using on this video what make and model?
MacAlpine has shown himself to be more musically versatile than Petrucci, and has demonstrated this in his solo albums and Planet X, the latter of which plays almost completely atonal, really complex Progressive Fusion, his playing is absolutely amazing on both Planet X albums but that's not to say Petrucci CAN'T play like that. @CKnoxW

yeeeah such a good combo, u know what its called?
@CKnoxW but he hasn't the stage presence that Vai has, it's fact! But i agree u, technically speaking
@ricknor to hire
faster than the original. it seems it IS possible then.

@CKnoxW
How could anyone dislike that? :)
on this video - Kevin Freeby
@CKnoxW do you think this? I like booth....are greats players...
YEAH he said that and HE DIDNT PLAY IT CORRECTLY. He played some tom tom bullshit on the hardest part of the song.
@CKnoxW I know lots of people won't agree with me but i agree with you about the guitar. Gavin Harrison Is better than Virgil Donati on the skins IMHO. And both Planet x and Porcupine Tree need more promotion!

who is the bass player?
@CKnoxW
Usually I don't like Steve Vai (except with Alcatrazz), but I don't like Tony Macalpine too, except in this band.
6 Dream Theather fans don´t like the video !
@sacha9646 lol. you just compared them yourself. why don't we just say that "some people dig Vai more that T-mac and some people dig T-mac more than Vai"
@LPmarkac wordd
@CKnoxW By 100 miles !
Planet X != Dream Theater
Planet X= Dream theater lml
isohunt? please help me find it!
planet X rules!
If you are serious when you say that Virgil struggled to play Portnoy's parts..then...I don't know what to say.
;-)
@CKnoxW

wish this song existed in better quality, it doesnt
progressive until death

@Romametal666 Planet X = World Class band
Dream Theater=0
And as always no cameras giving a single fuck about the bass man... 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
lte is not planet x...
lte is normal
planet x is supreme

this music is freaking difficult to listen.

Sounds too much like DT in my ears. Well, not DT, but Liquid Trio Experiment.
who is the bass player?
His name is Kevin Freeby. Great bass player, but i don't remember to see him in other concert with Planet X.
