Just curious. For everyone complaining about how 'overly complicated' this music is, do you actually know how Planet X was created? Derek Sherinian quite literally wanted to create the most intense instrumental band he could. "When I started Planet X, I had one goal: to start the sickest instrumental band in the world. I wanted to find musicans that played their instruments so fiercely, it would strike fear in the hearts of other musicians when they played" A.k.a, let's get people who know their instrument like the back of their hand, and let's make the most overly complicated music we can. Why? Because they can. So if you're complaining, go listen to something else. This was meant to be confusing and over the top. Because for them, it's a challenge, and it's fun as hell to see what they can come up with.
Wesley Ostrander And it was intended to entertain people are are musically astute and competent. Its mentally stimulating. Planet X is our musicians band for those theory geeks such as myself. Great musicians; great band.
You are aware that anyone who can explain quantum relativity to an expert immediately qualifies for immortality and a dozen of Nobel prizes? Creating that theory is the ultimate goal of fundamental theoretical physics (which by definition is the simplest and most basic branch of physics).
I can't believe this video hasn't received like 1 million more likes. Donati is truly unique, he is either an alien or a robot, or... an alien-robot o_O
I met Virgil and Allan Holdsworth after a gig at Harlow's in Sacramento a couple of years back. Had a beer with them and a couple of "Bucket List" pictures with them both. Virgil is one nicest guys I've ever met and one of the finest drummers I've ever seen. I have seen many of the "worlds best" drummers over the past 40 years including Bruford, Cobham, Bozio, and many more. I love seeing the posts about the music being too "complex". Funny they said the same thing about King Crimson 45 years ago!! I don't remember anyone dancing in the 70's when King Crimson played "Red" or "Starless"either!!For those of you feeling the need to "dance" or "shake your butts" may I suggest you check out some Earth, Wind and Fire or Bad Company for your 4/4 fix!!
I wish I was at that gig!! I stay in the East Bay and had no clue about it, damn! That's cool you got the pics and a chat. Also met Virgil Donati at a drum clinic and he was really cool.
I used to go see Vigil play every Tuesday night in both Loose Change and Hans Valen in Melbourne way back in 1990-92.. this guy blew us Aussies away then... Hope he gets the DT gig... he deserves it... and more...
I'm amazed there are 40 thumbs-down here!! I was expecting 6 million thumbs-down. This is not the music for simple mind. It's lonely on the top, and these guys are on the top of the pinnacle. Their music takes me to Planet X.
Moi aussi! Il assure à la batterie cest à croire quil a subi une mutaties avant de naître... comment fait-il pour maîtriser tous ces ritmes difficiles!?!
people always talk about his technique (speed and stuff) but i find his level of musical education and fast perception of complicated pieces far more impressive
Yeah, for me this is very high art. Period. Nothing “ceriberal” or “Mathmatical” about it. Just magical music from both a performance perspective and a compositional one too. Vigils feel alone is worth it. But all the muscians are killing it.
Such a beautiful drum kit and the sound of this band is electric! Power/precision/attack..not only the drum kit..but the tones the bass player is producing to give Virgil the benefit of creating parts is excilirating!!! xD
People dont realise how crazy this playing is, like it would take half your lifetime to get half the coordination that he has when he plays, he's one of those guys you watch and say to yourslef "what the hell i suck" lol, i got to meet him around this time when he was in the band doing clinics and he is really quiet though like in a shell
This is not about comparing drummers. Virgil is in a level of drumming that, i think, not other drummer have ever reached. He is not inly extremely technical, fast and grooving, but also hace a positronic brain. He can play two diferrent rudiments in left and right side.... He is simply the God of the drummers.
i loved it when virgil was trying out for dt, they thought he fucked up or didnt know the song, when really he wass trying something that was beyond dream theater, virgil stated "i know how to play the real part it goes like this" he played portnoys simple part then said "i was just trying something new" for once rudess and petruccis minds were blown
Look, this music is unbelievable and they are extremely talented! BUT guys, play with some feel and love, not what you practice. You've already proved to us that you're the best.

In my opinion, Virgil is the best fusion player to ever live. I've no idea how he does what he does and manage to stay in time and on cue. He's not of this world.
Playing like this needs great skill. I like Dave Weckl and Vinnie C. yet I can respect what is going on here. So all you trolling haters go home. This stuff is awesome . Keep it up boys you are kicking it nice. Peace.
@c0d3x001 also if you watch the documentary they made on the auditions it was not just a case of how good a drummer a person was but what kind of personality they had and stuff like that so it had to be a whole package when choosing their new drummer
This is great, Donati is beyond talented and his hard work and dedication have made him into a drumming phenomenon. It's just a bit samey to listen to (yes I am aware it's a rehearsal but still...)
@dtmusicman1973 I completely agree. Although I think it would be cool to have Virgil in Dream Theater. It could really sound interesting and different.

+Wesley Ostrander That is an excellent comment man.
THIS MAN
Creating art for art's sake! Piss on folks that don't like it, they can go listen to Taylor Swift or some other mindless dribble.
Wesley Ostrander And it was intended to entertain people are are musically astute and competent. Its mentally stimulating. Planet X is our musicians band for those theory geeks such as myself. Great musicians; great band.
These guys are not of this world musically!! Truly amazing instrumentalists!! No one can reproduce this. NOONE!! kudos boys!!!👍👍👍
Virgil has mastered the art of sounding like he cannot keep time, yet he does.
Lol the best comment here
trying to explain Virgil to a non-musician is like trying to explain the theory of quantum relativity to an infant.
fanman3652 that why the wiggles play in stadiums and Virgil unfortunately in bars
Epic comment and true!!!!!
You are aware that anyone who can explain quantum relativity to an expert immediately qualifies for immortality and a dozen of Nobel prizes? Creating that theory is the ultimate goal of fundamental theoretical physics (which by definition is the simplest and most basic branch of physics).
I'm a Musician, and I have no idea what Quantum Relativity is.
Frankie Wotton you just made my head explode with that simplistic statement. 🙈🤔
It makes "TOOL" sound like Green Day
🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha lol tool
Tool should not even be mentioned in this category.
From what I heard Virgil tried out for dream theater and was told his style is to much for the band

Earth, Wind and Fire is actually really cool :D haha

too complex? never. Just total badassery Glad you got to meet them. Today is my first time hearing them. Freind of mine from Israel sent me this link.
13 years and this video still blows my mind lol!
It's either you dig it or you don't. :) Man this is just brain candy for me! Seen this many times, Doug is a beast and just compliments Virgil.

You are right. It's gonna take me awhile to get into this kind of music. Planet X is cool though
Daamn Doug is a bass beast!
Quantum is probably my most favorite album period. Can't tell you how man times I've listened to it since it came out.
j'adore virgil donati!!!
Moi aussi! Il assure à la batterie cest à croire quil a subi une mutaties avant de naître... comment fait-il pour maîtriser tous ces ritmes difficiles!?!
Ahhh .. Nothing better than a tune you can dance too .. :)
This is beyond awesome......it's way too smooth to be just awesome.
Love Virgil's style! That color kit is awesome!!!!!!!!!
AMAZING.
Simply the best, he's in a league of his own
i wish VD joins DT. he is the most inspirational. i love his drumming, so good and interesting to listen.
people always talk about his technique (speed and stuff) but i find his level of musical education and fast perception of complicated pieces far more impressive

This is so awesome! It’s like they were playing music from another dimension, hope to see Planet X some day
Virgil enjoys what he plays very much, as do his fans.
Donati best drummer and musician ever!
And as expected their rehearsal is more perfect than almost any other performance. Outstanding!
Such a beautiful drum kit and the sound of this band is electric! Power/precision/attack..not only the drum kit..but the tones the bass player is producing to give Virgil the benefit of creating parts is excilirating!!! xD
I found out this boosts my mental power. (very good for reading)
I believe Virgil can play at any time signature or a combination of thereof he is awesome he may be alien he’s a bad ass
So much respect...
I was like that, but then I listened to Spastic Ink and Blotted Science, and then everything changed. :)
Virgil is the "Donati of drums"
Albi Collier Do "NUTTY" of drums in my opinion.
Albi Collier
literally lol
Pearl drums sounded amazing!
this is some truly mind-bending stuff. into planet x i go
virgil has forgotten playing 4/4
I've seen a Virgil show closely in Prato (Italy). It was wonderful and Virgil was happy and very available with all fans...
People dont realise how crazy this playing is, like it would take half your lifetime to get half the coordination that he has when he plays, he's one of those guys you watch and say to yourslef "what the hell i suck" lol, i got to meet him around this time when he was in the band doing clinics and he is really quiet though like in a shell

you got it wrong man, its actually 54/-1/2 ;)
No it's 34/72...
@Lawson Russell dude, you forgot a pi with 7i
Absolutely incredible. I wanna see the foot cam!
I wonder if he plays his parts pretty much the same every time? If so, then I am as impressed with his memory as I am with his playing!
i loved it when virgil was trying out for dt, they thought he fucked up or didnt know the song, when really he wass trying something that was beyond dream theater, virgil stated "i know how to play the real part it goes like this" he played portnoys simple part then said "i was just trying something new" for once rudess and petruccis minds were blown

holy shit. thats awesome.
For sure, I totally agree. :)
I'm a pretty well rounded musician and I'm even struggling to keep up with these Time-Signatures. Absolutely fucking crazy, Virgil.
I searched Planet X but then appeared all that crazy stuff about a tenth planet......I was just looking for some Virgil's drumming goddamit!
@Scrumdilliisious thank you for understanding the difference!
this is so intense. damn.
Playing like this needs great skill. I like Dave Weckl and Vinnie C. yet I can respect what is going on here. So all you trolling haters go home. This stuff is awesome . Keep it up boys you are kicking it nice. Peace.
Or, YOU could go home.
Face just melted. . .
@daonpa All drumming is polyrhythmic. What Virgil does is polymetric.
This is a great instructional to understand all that crazy over the top progressive meter changes
Master!
@c0d3x001 also if you watch the documentary they made on the auditions it was not just a case of how good a drummer a person was but what kind of personality they had and stuff like that so it had to be a whole package when choosing their new drummer

Monster musicians.
music of the planets
1:45 - 3:13 is one of my favorite Virg moments EVER, and that's sayin' a lot.
Bloody hell yes
Essa cara é um monstro.
This is great, Donati is beyond talented and his hard work and dedication have made him into a drumming phenomenon. It's just a bit samey to listen to (yes I am aware it's a rehearsal but still...)
Beta 52's on both floor toms. Nice. And my word, the absolute command of the groove...just insane.
thanks for writing out the time signatures... now please make it in a color that shows up so I can read it!
i cannot figure out any from 00:00 to 10:29 ...
@ransisua Absolutely...but no many people unerstand him...including DT see the auditions
Hell Yeah!!!!
The timing changes twist me all up , but it's gooooooooood :D
Bad ass!
man that timing is killer
@dtmusicman1973 I completely agree. Although I think it would be cool to have Virgil in Dream Theater. It could really sound interesting and different.
way cool
