This video could be called "The most technically advanced drummer to ever live giving one of the best performances of his life... and his band mates are pretty good too".
Alien Hip Hop is a proggy fusion classic. I can't help laughing looking at Donati make it look so easy. I have no words for how much I respect what Virgil has achieved in drumming. Completely on his own level, mindblowing.
High five! Bassist Doug Shreeve is in a class of his own. Unfortunately he stopped playing professionally not long after this video was made and has gone completely off the radar.
Stumbled on this after checking out Simon hosford via little river band. This is just amazing. Absolutely love this. Fantastic musicianship. I am sending this on to every musician I know. Bloody amazing
Wow...what can one say but just unbelievable & awesome. Very humbled to have had the privilege to have worked with 3 of the band. Thanks for the upload Hoss
The Pearl drums really sound great here. Virgil has always had a knack of getting a great drum sound and really knows how to pull the sound out of his drums and cymbals. That said I think his best sound was when he was playing Paiste and Sonor and least impressive was the Remo era, (although he still sounded great even on the Remos)
Oh man, what an upload!! What have I done to deserve this!? Thanks so much. What a treat. ❤️ Great sound too. A lot o live recordings sound dirty, not this one. 💎
Doug is such an imposing presence on stage . He was born to physically dominate the bass in a way that is not possible for others . His sound is big because he is a big man with huge hands . His bass bends to his every command . I don't think you could teach anyone how to play what we are listening to here.
Absolutely agreed 100%. Sadly, Doug appears to have left the music scene not long after this performance and has chosen to disappear and remain silent. Of course his health and well being are paramount, but his loss to the music community is huge for all the reasons you cite. He is one of the true greats of the modern electric bass and totally unique in his own way like Jaco, Stanley Clarke, Jimmy Haslip, Bunny Brunel, and Jeff Berlin are.
absolutely agree. When i saw his playing in Red Air, i tried to find out what hes involved in, and though there is some, i was sad to see him not get more spotlight. Such a unique approach
The incomparably brilliant and gifted DOUG SHREEVE on bass, especially KILLING IT on "Eternity" at 40:40. In a class of his own, Doug sadly quit playing professionally not long after this tour. COME BACK DOUG!
Out of the haze would've been an absolute ripper with the bass solo followed by the killer arpeggio section. What a chord progression. Maybe OTVs next tour at the end of the year? 😜
Casually playing live in 11/16 like it's nothing... this is ludicrous! I got Serious Young Insects on CD back in 2001 and it remains one of my favourite albums of all time.
I've watched this performance countless times by now. It's absolutely flawless. The sound is immaculate, the playing is stellar, the material kicks so much ass. This may mostly be music for musicians, but it's absolute top shelf.
Simon Hosford.... you're a force of nature brother. Fantastic guitar work here man. You're all musical powerhouses. Thanks for bringing this to those of us who value the complexity and dynamics of this amazing music. Be good brother...
I am amazed/glad people are seeing this show now! Having seen him live back in the day AND owning the actual On The Virg album... man... so many great melodies and crazy grooves, top notch musicians. *cheers*
Thanks for posting this show. Everyone is killing it and bassist Doug Shreeve is in a class of his own. Sadly, it appears that he appears to have stopped performing shortly after this tour.
I'm watching this AGAIN after watching it half a dozen times last month. I have to say my fav moment is Turcio's solo on Thinking Stone. Virgil digs in so hard and Turcio seem to push him to new levels, totally awe inspiring!! Thanks Hos, for making this available, a landmark event for instrumental music in Australia and the world.
Yeah right. That song would be perfect to open the show. Dessert Girl is a cool song, but man, it's On The f *** Virg, play the OTV songs! Serious Young Insects is my favorite prog metal/jazz fusion whatever in the world.
I was there at this performance - Melbourne (Doncaster?) the whole band carved it up totally. Simon you were absolutely on fire that night, as captured in this video. Not only that, you were a total gentleman talking enthusiastically to fans afterwards, so much positive energy. Hope you're going well now..
reminds me at times of Richie Kotzen's Inner Galactic Fusion Experience back from 1995, and his fusion collab albums with Greg Howe from 1996 and 1997... how ahead of their time were they
Interestingly, I'm here after watching an interview with Bruno Valverde, drummer for the Smith/Kotzen project. He says in the interview that he was discovered by members of the band Angra playing a Virgil cover. I'm really enjoying this ´´new´´ discovery
Dude, I'm so happy discovering this, thank you SO MUCH for this upload!!! Probably one of the best live footage i've ever seen with Virgil playing some of my favorites from Planet X and his solo carrer. I've always dreamt with a Planet X live dvd, this somehow gets closer to this dream than anything I've ever found of live footage with those songs. REALLY, THANK YOU!!!!!
Awesome, memory lane! I remain eternally gutted that you guys never released that show with Evri you filmed at the Evelyn before the record came out, that lineup and those tunes were magical. I had a dodgy bootleg of that show that remained my favorite piece of recorded music until somebody stole my stereo with the tape in the deck. Love ya work mate!
Yep, must have seen nearly every one of those shows at the Evelyn over 1997, before I moved overseas in 98. 20 years later, now that I'm back in Aus, I'd drive 20+ hours to see them play again in Melbourne. Although the Grainstore (from the mid-80's) is now well and truly gone. You would think that in today's world of sharing parts over the interweb, and the last 2 years of few performances, there'd be a host of music stored up awaiting release. Fingers crossed, eh?
The "Strings" nailed it . This compositions are not easy to play . Virgil probably composed the all thing , so he's kind'a 'at home' , Keybordist is a hell of an interpret, but the Guitarist (Simon?) and the Bassist (Doug?) made it alive. I'm listening in 2024, I'm familiar with 'In This Life' (Virgil's album), but never heard the tracks played 'live' before .Nice surprise ! .
Because they know what tyey are playing &what tey realy need ,and ofcourse Mr "DONATI"is here with us😂👏👏👏👏😂🙏👉yes s s s ssss.....masterpiece of the masterpieces in whowly times&awesome indeed☄👑🌸🌹💖🌹🍃🕊💚☝holylove🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
One of the best things has ever happened in history of modern music. They all play different tine signatures and yet the outcome is pleasantly harmonious. Shut out to Doug being on BEAST mode on the bass.
Wow, thank you for uploading this. I had been searching for the dvd for years but could never find it. Although I still would like a copy, I can at least finally watch this great performance. 😃
I just came across this band and this album (I know...shame on me), and I am blown away. The bass in Desert Girl sounds almost like Zeuhl style. Or not.
Wow! Thanks to Spotify I just stumbled upon this music. I must say that I love it. I've never been much into heavy metal. But this blend of heavy metal and Jazz is really killing it. I couldn't stop watching this. All of the musicians are badasses without question! Bravo!! I'm now a new fan!
This video could be called "The most technically advanced drummer to ever live giving one of the best performances of his life... and his band mates are pretty good too".
A me piace anche molto il bassista fa dei giri con il basso unici molto bravo 🎉🎉
Alien Hip Hop is a proggy fusion classic. I can't help laughing looking at Donati make it look so easy.
I have no words for how much I respect what Virgil has achieved in drumming. Completely on his own level, mindblowing.
Virgil is the greatest drummer to ever sit on a throne!!! This is an amazing group of musicians right here!!!
Thomas Lang is better
Serious Young Insects has been, and will remain, one of my all time favourite albums. Trailblazing music.
Doug Shreeve on bass. Love his growl sound 💪 That man is a shining gem!
High five! Bassist Doug Shreeve is in a class of his own. Unfortunately he stopped playing professionally not long after this video was made and has gone completely off the radar.

I could not agree more. Sensational!
WTF?? "Shredder" Simon Hosford was in the Little River Band??
Wow thanks for uploading the last part! What an absolute perfect show! Alien Hip Hop!!!
You're welcome William. Thanks for pointing out the upload fault 🤘
This may be the greatest performance of any live musicians ever. WTF!!!!!!!!!! mind blown
That bass player... OMG... Absolute killer. Never heard something like this. Out of this world.
Doug Shreeve, he’s been on a lot of Virgil’s projects
Listen Magma band, from France. If you Don t know. Is some difference but is amazing.
Wow...what can one say but just unbelievable & awesome. Very humbled to have had the privilege to have worked with 3 of the band. Thanks for the upload Hoss
Mindblowing, those musicians, ho my...and Virgil proves again he is not from Earth.
100%
He's from Planet X 😉
Holy crap, intense music from another dimension. Why Virgil left Pearl drums is beyond me. This kit sounds way better than any DW kit.
its plain economics ....the highest payer gets the honey !
Virgil Donati is kind of an Albert Einstein . A genious . He looks like an alien. Thanks virgil for every note u play . Ur are unique !
This is like listening to Planet X... but on steroids! Amazing! Out of this world!
Those Pearl drums kicks the dw’s all day long.. great sounding kit 🤘
Wow
The Pearl drums really sound great here. Virgil has always had a knack of getting a great drum sound and really knows how to pull the sound out of his drums and cymbals. That said I think his best sound was when he was playing Paiste and Sonor and least impressive was the Remo era, (although he still sounded great even on the Remos)
My thought exactly
But neither can touch the Genista's 😊
Wow that drum solo Me, Myself & I was mind blowing. Never heard drums being played that masterfully...
That guitar solo from Pyramids on Mars is the best shit I've ever heard. EVER, PERIOD.
Oh man, what an upload!! What have I done to deserve this!? Thanks so much. What a treat. ❤️ Great sound too. A lot o live recordings sound dirty, not this one. 💎

@@algernonblackwood1707 Man, so true! Every now and again I revisit some of the stuff he did with Virgil and check on him to no avail, so sad.
Jazz-Rock isn't dead. It just smells funny.
Zappa
Mark Wingfield, Asaf Sirkis, Sean Wayland
Great quotes from Frank Zappa jazz is not dead it just smells funny
Oh Planet X🔥🔥🔥🔥
Still the best prog project EVER!
What an incredible performance!!!
The incomparably brilliant and gifted DOUG SHREEVE on bass, especially KILLING IT on "Eternity" at 40:40. In a class of his own, Doug sadly quit playing professionally not long after this tour. COME BACK DOUG!
thank you for listing personnel. What a bass MONSTER. Come back, play more!
ABSOLUTE BEAST ON THE BASS! totally one of my best 5 bass players of all time in the prog world!
Out of the haze would've been an absolute ripper with the bass solo followed by the killer arpeggio section. What a chord progression. Maybe OTVs next tour at the end of the year? 😜
So true, love that song! Could not find it anywhere
So beautiful! I love every second of this masterpiece of a concert.
BEAUTIFUL ...This set should be an ALBUM!!... Unity and determination ...Inspiring.
Thank you so much !
What an awesome performance ... bass sound is killing everything 🙂
Bassist Doug Shreeve is in a class all his own.
Great playing Simon... Tone is immaculate mate.
Casually playing live in 11/16 like it's nothing... this is ludicrous! I got Serious Young Insects on CD back in 2001 and it remains one of my favourite albums of all time.
One of the absolute best concert I've heard, and Doug Shreeve is just pure magic! ❤🔥
Absolutely. Strangely and sadly, not long after this tour Doug Shreeve gave up playing bass professionally, a loss for his fans and the music world.
Thank you for uploading the show man !!! I'm from Brazil and couldn't find anywere !!!
Not enough like buttons for this.
That Drum talking is absolutely fabously Dan..fn gerous. Hats off to the G.O.A.T. Living Legend..VIRGIL DONATI.. !!
Incredible and original fusion...

Amazing 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This can't be real.
Real shit down under
It’s not. It’s Memorex.
It is bro 😅😊😊
😂😂😂😂 All right. From universe...
I was there and it was unreal and real at the same time.
Great bass sound and playing. So many jazz bass players have a crappy thin tone - this has BASS! Great band.
Monster guitar player!
Off course…
Monster? Sorry he scares you.
THE FUCKING BEST.. I still have my serious young insects from 1999.. Love em all..
same here! 🍻
bro could you mind share a cd rip on flac? I can't find this on the internet.
Best Aussie band to have ever existed. Hands down
It´s like a musical storm!!
