You have just summed up my life for the past 2 years. I’m 46 & menopause hit me like a ton of bricks & completely caught me off guard. My first noticeable system was painful sex so bad I couldn’t even do it anymore. The worst part is when I went to my obgyn for help she made me feel like I’m was imagining the pain & told me I had a bacterial infection. 😡 after months of telling her something was wrong she filling tested my hormones & was like “oh your in menopause” but still offered me no guidance or options. I went to another doctor I had years ago I did 3 sessions of the thermiva treatment. It was like night & day after the first session. My sex life was back & getting better after each session. I would highly recommend thermiva to all.
I’m still in the process of finding the right doctor & looking into HRT. I’m starting pilates. I’m 5’8 & also been thin then all of a sudden 2 years & 30 pounds heavier all around the belly. Still struggling with weight gain nothing has worked so far & its very depressing. Thank goodness woman are finally talking about menopause & not suffering in silence anymore like I felt I was. Great video !

Your story is SO common!!! Shouldn't we expect an OB/GYN would be knowledgeable about what is going on with their patients??? This just proves that doctors are NOT recieving enough education on how to recognize and treat their period menopausal and menopausal patients! Most of us have not been to med school but know MORE about hormone replacement and the effects of deficient hormones than a lot of doctors! This isn't right!
I'm so glad that Erin is taking the lead and speaking out about this. The more we can learn and share, the more women can find hope and find relief!

@@claudiatzava Look up Dr. Eric Berg here on YT. He is an excellent resource. I did IF for 7 months and lost 50 pounds that I gained during menopause. I picked an 8-hour window of eating(and most people do start with the 8 hour window). I did mine from 11-7, then I switched it up because I like to get up and eat breakfast, so I moved it from 10-6. I did this 5 days a week and it was actually not that hard at all. I found that in my 8 hour window, I just didn't feel hungry enough to eat a full day of calories, and I think that's where the weight loss came from. I had to eat a small breakfast in order to even cook for my husband at night. I need to be hungry to cook lol. There are many ways of doing IF but here's something I learned and I've heard others talk about this as well...don't tell people that you are doing IF because they will tell you "it's unhealthy". It actually was a game-changer for me. I no longer do it because I've been able to maintain my weight loss, but if I had to go back to it, I could and would. I thought it would be really hard but it wasn't too bad. Life is certainly easier now because I can eat whenever I want and you can't do that when doing IF, but losing the weight was worth the deprivation I sometimes felt. I hope this helps! And, yes, check out Eric Berg....he's awesome!

Erin, I always love what you bring us!
52 years old here. I'd always carried around an additional 20 pounds I didn't need. Back when closing in on 50 years old I made the decision to do something about it, really just hoping to keep what I had in check so it didn't get any worse than it already was. My process began three years ago and involved trying a clinic diet (Red Mountain here in Arizona). I lost weight right away, but went back to old eating patterns and regained the weight....tried the diet only half-heartedly again a year later (surprise, surprise, not much happened), and then really committed to it last year by continuing with the plan for an additional two months after completing the diet. That was the key!!
By going that extra mile my "set point" actually re-set for the first time in my life. I lost almost 30 pounds total. Now when I overeat I easily go right back to my new set-point. I am much smaller now than when I got married 20 years ago, and I never thought that would ever happen.
The key to long term success is acknowledging that it does take time -- putting those good habits into practice for an additional couple of months after reaching our goal weight actually re-sets our brains. There is a huge difference between how quickly I used to regain weight, post diet, and how hard it is to regain weight now. By pushing myself for those two additional "lean, healthy eating" months, my body changed a lot, and there is a redistribution of fat. My entire shape changed! Now when I overindulge I tend towards the new, lower set-point.
It's not fun to restrict calories and certain foods, but as a general rule we seem to accept this in the short term to reach a goal. Once we reach that goal we think we're "done", so we relieve ourselves of the burden of starvation, thinking we're finished. And then what do we do? We eat. We tend to think in binary: Either we restrict calories to lose, or we eat as we did before. "Maintained" weight loss, however, is eating more calories than what we allowed ourselves while on a diet, but less calories than we ate when we were heavier. It's that sweet spot in the middle that many of us don't bother learning, but it's The Crucial Part of resetting our brains and maintaining our health.
I used to believe I was doomed to stay heavier. I was a size 8-10, and sometimes a 12. 150 pounds used to be my "low" weight--the weight I got to by starvation and couldn't maintain. I thought my thin days were behind me forever, and I thought it was hormonal and there was nothing I could do about it. That it was one of life's rules, written in the stars. I surprised myself by putting in the effort of calorie restriction, and then learning how to bump up the calories and lean into healthier choices for an additional two months until my brain got wind of what I was doing. I am now a size 4 and I eat whatever I want. My brain wants me to be smaller now. Of course, most days I eat lean and healthy because it is habit. I do get on the scale 1x a day--only in the mornings. It is the gauge that reminds me where I am, and based on the number I get to decide for myself how I get to eat that day. Many days I find myself enjoying whatever I want, but if scale bumps up one or two pounds, I know it is likely water--and that's when I back of on the carbs for a day. One day is all it takes to keep it in check. It's easier to get on the scale every day and lose one or two pounds than it is to never get on the scale, be in denial, and then feel we must lose ten or fifteen, or more, pounds.

Hey Erin. You are such a kind person! Perimenopause started for me at 45. At first I didn't even realize what was going on. I had night sweats that woke me up and kept me awake for hours. The problem was that I couldn't get back to sleep, not the hot flushes. I had mood swings for a couple of years. I gained 10-12 lbs and like you, I am 5' 2" so this was a big deal for me. I was always slim and even if I gained a few lbs, I was always able to shed them in a few weeks. Well, not this time. I didn't loose anything for a couple of years, no matter what I did. I was also fighting with cravings (I still have them - sweet cravings). My last period was almost 2 years ago, at 47. I found that it has become easier once I was postmenopausal. I don't know but I think my hormones are a little more balanced. I don't take any HRT but I started exercising (about 2 years ago) and I am doing body weight bearing exercises, a little cardio and strength. I have read that too much cardio is not good for us, as it puts stress on the body and we end up gaining weight. We need to alternate cardio with yoga, Pilates. I still want to get into HIIT. I cannot be strict Keto (my hot flushes are getting really bad) but low carb helped a lot. I also started IF (up to 22 hours fasting) and my weight went down. I lost all the extra lbs and a couple more. I am wearing a size I used to wear in university. I recommend dr. Mindy Peltz here on youtube, she is awesome and puts out a lot of information regarding IF, keto for women (not only in menopause but also during fertile years) and she will launch a book about menopause in late February. She is also talking about doing keto and having hormone building days. I agree with her, I think women need to have complex carbs once in a while. I noticed it helped with my hot flushes. In my opinion, any diet you choose, just make sure it's whole foods and not processed food. Whenever possible, buy from the local farmers, or organic.
I also take supplements: vit B Supreme (a mix of B's), B12 (I am deficient), D, magnesium and Vitazan Osteo Strength. I am seeing a nathuropat for the last 3 years so she is prescribing all the supplements. This is my research and what I did for the last 4 years and honestly, I feel better than ever, and I have so much energy!

It was very kind of you to address a subject that is not necessarily easy to speak about in such a public forum. I am post menopause 12 years now. I stopped my cycle at 52 years of age. Progesterone cream helped me greatly. My emotions and personality stayed fairly level. I would periodically check with a young friend of mine to make sure my personality was not changing. I did not want to use menooause as an excuse to be cranky with others. My hot flashes were horrible!
It was good advice you gave about a complete thyroid check. I developed Hashimoto’s Disease in my early/ mid 50s. It is like getting hit with a double whammy-menopause and then thyroid problems.
But every story has an end. So does menopause. There is a great life waiting for you on the other side!

Best workout online I’ve found for me personally at 53, is Pahla B Fitness. She has an extensive channel here on RUclips and her workouts are fabulous. I was doing Jillian Michaels DVD’s, HIIT training etc and was starting to injure myself because I wasn’t recovering from workouts as easily I did before 50. Pahla is fun, encouraging, and her workouts are effective but not brutal. And thanks Erin SO much for this great video! I’m going to make my husband watch it too so maybe he’ll have a better understanding of this special hell we call menopause. 😩

So glad you pointed out that everybody is case by case. Freaks me out when people want to take medical advice from the internet. People need to listen to a qualified professional. I’m 57 been on HRT since I got into menopause, my doctor did bloodwork to see where I was. Have some symptoms but not bad. Pretty sure my Dr. is going to encourage me to wean off. Weight gain/loss, bottom line if you are otherwise healthy it’s calories in calories out, there is no magic pill🤷🏻‍♀️ and you can’t out exercise your diet. As Americans I simply think we over eat our portions are simply too large. Make a conscious effort to portion control with good foods you enjoy get some exercise, you don’t have to kill yourself just move. It’s working for me.

A simplified opinion, I think......'calories in, calories out'. I've gained 60 pounds since peri and full menopause. It's a good thing I wasn't very big to start with. Our bodies all react to stress in different ways; and I believe menopause and it's symptoms can be classed as a type of bodily stress. Coupled with poor sleep, another stressor, and slowing metabolism, it's no wonder our body reacts to the various stressors by wanting to hold on to the weight. And I don't know about you, but my daily pill requirement due to medical reasons increases the odds of gaining weight. I work out daily now due to CovId, and it's a sweat inducing work-out, at least 1/2 hour, and I've made peace with my body. I threw out the clothes that I couldn't fit into anymore so I'd stop beating myself up about my weight. I've bought new, natural fiber clothing, so I'm comfortable and don't sweat so much. I've had close calls medically, amongst which was septic shock this past Dec. Four days in ICU. I'm alive, I'm basically healthy, and I do my best, but in the end, it's a unique experience for us all.

I've been vegetarian for over 30 years. I eat healthy, do some light weight lifting to maintain muscle mass, and I walk as much as possible, which really helps me maintain my weight. You opened yourself up and talked about your personal life with such an openness that is definitely not easy to do. I am 62 years old so am past some of the hardest areas of menopause but still do periodically get hot flashes and run a little warm …. and the pee thing!! It is a hard time and I wish when I was in the throws of it all 10 years ago that I had a forum like this as I didn't totally understand everything that was happening to me. I did not take any hormone replacement as my doctor didn't like prescribing it unless you absolutely couldn't cope - there was a real fear of cancer so many Canadian doctors stopped prescribing it. I did live to talk about it but do work out with weights along with walking and hiking and did loose 25 lbs following weight watchers. I try to eat a healthy diet, take vitamin D, exercise and enjoy the occasional glass of red wine - still gotta live, right!! Thanks again for being so open and I love watching and listening to you!

Erin thank you for opening up the conversation on this topic, bravo to you. Most infulencers that I have seen on youtube who talk about "belly fat" are under 30 and fast for 10 days and lose 10 lbs. That does not work for women going through menopause. I am 55 and have gained 10 lbs right in my midsection and it's close to impossible to lose. However, I have learned you can exercise until the cows come home, but it also has ALOT to do with your diet. I have changed mine and am finally seeing results. It is however, so hard to stay on track when you're having hot flashes, mood swings, achy joints, loss of sleep, etc. Also, I refuse to do HRT, just scares me, so I tried accupuncture for hotflashes and it has def helped me. Thank you for inspiring us and helping other women realize we're pretty much all in the same boat.

I don’t know why but when I started various exercising as a hunch to deal with hot flashes in my menopause… It worked! (Hatha yoga is gentle on the body but so effective on muscle development!) It’s like my body’s internal set points were rebooted back to normal. I also switched over to an intermittent fasting, keto plant-based diet, that’s kept me from gaining weight. This has also given me way more energy and I feel better. I made a list of things that bring me joy in life and posted it on my mirror, with that I’m learning to be kinder to myself and others. 👩🏻‍🦳 Also I let my hair go to its natural color! Big hug! Women need to share and learn. I will never forgot my sister, because so many doctors preach not to take Estrogen or at least her’s did. Finally she went back after such bad hot sweat, she could not sleep every few minutes her heart would race she would start to turn red and sweat. Finally she just looked sick. She finally went to a doctor and started on estrogen. She said what a difference she looked so much better. I use an estrogen patch and a vaginal cream because I started to get bladder infections and they did not stop until I replaced the estrogen a couple times a week I put a cream in. And painful intercourses. Food I started adding a lot of veggies, I do a version of the paleo and Mediterranean diet. And working out and walking. I learned a lot from Dr. Taylor and she explains why. God bless you Erin for sharing this. The treatment you spoke of I have never heard of so , thank you! I feel like it’s a cruel trick Mother Nature plays on women. It’s is so life altering, I see so many struggle with it and not feel well and loss confidence. It’s shameful that more attention is not place on this time in a women’s life.

According to Menopause Taylor, the timing for HRT is imperative. I was on it for a few years and quit taking it because of the possible risks. After watching one of Dr. Taylor’s videos I knew my window of opportunity for it to be effective was closing. So, I started back on it! A great video on a subject that needs to be discussed more! The menopause journey is different for each of us ... yet in many ways the same! I went thru sudden menopause due to a complete hysterectomy... including the ovaries...when I was 36... I am 60 now.. so it’s been awhile but I am still learning and trying different methods to help me feel my best! The struggle is real.... it took me 2 years of doing my own research and trying different medications, vitamins, diets... reading many books ,videos...etc...to feel like me again... but gals you will get there!, I did not have this important resource back then...women talking to women and sharing our stories... so amazing to know we are not alone! I am on oral estradiol twice a day , small amount of testosterone cream daily ... has worked for me! Low carb diet... workout almost everyday.. walking and weights...but still learning! Much love to you, Erin. That was fantastic and so very personal. Takes some of the fear away. I so appreciate you and your bravery. I am in the middle of peri-menopause. Literally had my first hot flash a month ago. Noticing some hair loss. I've been taking biotin. As far as weight gain, that started happening in my mid 40s, switched to keto and Intermittent fasting as a combo, at 47.. That really helped. For exercise, I've been a Jazzercise instructor for 14 years. Becoming an instructor is what keeps me consistent. An hour a day. If I have to travel, I bring my music, and teach myself a class. I sprinkle in yoga, ballet, pilates in for variety. Not a runner, not good on my body. Physical activity helps keep my chemistry in check. That is my limited contribution. Hope it helps. Thank you again, Erin, for all that you do.

I went on keto diet for 4 months. Like you said I couldn’t imagine doing it as a lifestyle. Too restrictive. I’ve been working out at Planet Fitness almost everyday. Erin.....you're one of my shero's💗!!! I love how brave you are to discuss all of these issues with us....we really need to be able to share this information without the shame that society attaches to it. But I'm alot like you in regards to being a fighter! I'm 48 & I've been suffering with my thyroid issues since the birth of my third and last child. Unfortunately for me....those symptoms look and feel like those we experience when going thru menopause. I've been flashing since my mid 30's and it's so embarrassing because I have no control over when or where it happens😔. It seems to be triggered by direct sunlight or a constant source of heat on my body..... then I burst into this torrential downpour of sweat from my head that never seems to stop! And I live in Atlanta- so 10 out of 12 months are absolutely horrible for me. But my GYN says I'm still not in menopause. This is strange because i haven't had a period since i had the ablation surgery (10 years ago) to help with my heavy mental flow. So I'm enjoying the joy of no cycle- but my PMS seems to be borderline psychotic to me. I'm at a loss and praying that I'm already experiencing some of the worst that menopause has to offer..... because if it gets much worse that this.... I'm going to need some help😳. Again...thank you for stepping out of your comfort zone and allowing yourself to be transparent in order to help all of us. I applaud your courage🥰! And I'm holding out hope that it does get better once the transition is complete.

This is the most informative, easy to follow resource on menopause. I was apprehensive on clicking because I usually come away feeling overwhelmed. Thank you for sharing your personal story and giving me clear information. I heard that weight training is important for women our age because it helps prevent osteoporosis due to muscle loss in menopause.

Wow! I cried after watching your video. Thank you SO MUCH for talking about this. Now I don’t feel so alone anymore. I have been in full menopause since I turned 47. I will be 50 in September this year. So glad that I can try out your suggestions. Painful sex is the worse. I can still handle the hot flushes. Sugar triggers my hot flushes. And since I cut sugar & carbs, and also doing intermittent fasting, I’ve lost a lot of weight. And the hot flushes are less. Now I just need to sort out the intamacy part of my life.

I am through with menopause since many years, but still remember very well what was going on with me. Your video would have been of great help at that time! You definitly mentioned all symptoms that might occure. Now most problems are all over, vaginal cream is my best friend and time helps. But there is still the belly fat, I'm fighting against it with intermitted fasting, fresh cooking and daily home training. That works best for me. Another problem is the hair thinning, that's enormously frustrating and actually nothing is really working. But to be healthy and stay healthy as long as possible is my most important wish for the future.
Honest Erin, your channel is so important for me, thank you so much for your work and support! I try to be my best version every day🤗 Good bless you, enjoy life ♥️🍀

I just wish I came from a family that didn't think getting everything cut out was the answer. It's been an experiment to see what works. Nothing has helped with the bigger issues, but the only "smaller" one that I have on rare occasions is night sweats, so that's nice, I guess.

One thing that wasn't discussed are the diseases we are more susceptible to during menopause, such as

Peri menopause was awful for me. Usually your progesterone drops, your estrogen is through the roof. If sex drive is low your testosterone has probably dropped like mine did. Good to get your hormones balanced starting now. That helped me a lot, Get your hormones tested.

Thank you for opening and sharing. I’ve been suffering with depression due to having an injury and surgery, I was sad and frustrated to need surgery, temporarily losing my mobility it was a long 6 months from injury to still not healed, I’m doing PT but regular life is starting to return. During that I didn’t feel like a woman, I felt bad about my self and what you say is so true when you look good you feel good. I was struggling with basic self care. I think it’s so important that we as women can talk about sexual health and the conditions we experience that affect it. So thank you very much, this is actually a life style topic in seeking out.

This is such good advice, thank you so much! I found it especially helpful that you mentioned thyroid problems - I think they are overlooked even by a lot of doctors because they can be really tricky and you need a specialist.
I have been going through menopause for about seven years and have been suffering from various symptoms, especially hot flashes and insomnia, but I managed without any HRT and it has gotten a lot better in the last two years (maybe apart from the belly fat issue 😣). So there is hope!

So appreciate you honesty in this video - we need to support one another whenever we can and this is a great platform to do that.
With respect to painful intercourse (been there), after talking with my gyni and her examining me, she felt certain I had "Vaginismus" - painful sex is usually a first sign of it.
Without getting into the particulars, just look it up and will explain it properly. I was referred to a Physiotherapist with training in this and she showed me how to properly do kegels as well as a few other exercises to do. I found after about 1-2 months of doing them - voila, pain gone. That was 2 yrs ago and I still do them religiously daily (only takes 10 mins). I know there are other things going on with many women, but this was something I never heard anyone ever talk about and so happy I was guided in the right direction. Like you mentioned, if this even help one woman - that is fantastic. Much love to everyone.

I just turned 56 and also just officially passed 12 months without a period. I’d love to go on HRT but have been scared away because I have very dense breasts but after listening to a Dr. Rhonda Patrick ‘Found My Fitness’ episode with Dr. Carol Tavris discussing her book ‘Estrogen Matters’ I think the risks from not doing HRT outweigh the risks from doing it. I have nearly every symptom you mentioned with insomnia being the worst symptom of all. I was having terrible panic attacks and anxiety that nobody ever told me are symptoms, but thankfully they’ve been easing off.
I definitely appreciate you posting this video. It’s good to have open conversation about things like this and I don’t have any girlfriends my age to discuss this with. I love that there is this great community of women who can share their experiences and help each other out.

I'm 51 and been in menopause a very long time since I was 37! I had a complete hysterectomy. I didn't start having painful sex until I was 47 my skin turned chalk white, like I was bleaching it down there! My Dr. placed me on progesterone... It was no help! I finally went to a gyno after a year, I had lichen sclerosus! It's been a ride! I am 5'4 and always weighed 102 lbs until 37 then every year it creeped up, now I'm 160! WTH I'm trying to diet and exercise! I feel hopeless about it all...sigh, complaint over. Thank you Erin for opening up the discussion! I hope we all find the answer that helps!

Hi Erin, you have done all women a huge service with your video. One thing I want to note regarding the vaginal dryness, painful sex and vaginal atrophy is that it is the one thing during menopause that does NOT get better with time. You have to be proactive in rectifying it. Local estrogen helps, as does taking BHRT estrogen (for me, it helped immensely). Here in Canada we have Pure Pharmacy that has a compounded natural vaginal moisturizer (no hormones) that has also made a HUGE difference. While it may be uncomfortable discussing this topic, I know many women who are suffering in silence and rather than dealing with it, simply "close up shop". So unfortunate for all involved as there ARE ways to improve it. Another solution to look into is a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist. Unfortunately there are very few doctors who have taken the time to educate themselves on women's midlife health. As a result, we are left to fend for ourselves and find our own solutions which is so time consuming and confusing. You mentioned Menopause Taylor in your video. Here are a few more that I have found to be very helpful in my journey: 1: Dr. Jade Teta (www.jadeteta.com/store/hpZUromo - his menopause course is FREE or search for his videos here on RUclips) 2) Dr. Heather Hirsch www.heatherhirschmd.com/ 3) Menopause Chicks www.menopausechicks.com/ Thank you Erin for your candidness and willingness to help other women during this pivotal time in our lives.

Thank You! I'm 2 years post menopausal. You are listing the top solutions I found too! Here's my best solutions: intermittent fasting. I'm losing about 2 lbs a month. Very sustainable. Estrogen topically on vagina, walking about 5 days/ week, supplements, lots of liquids/water. I'm a fighter like you. Just taking the journey. I'm watching menopause Taylor and next is an HRT evaluation. I am amazed that no medical doctor discussed any of this with me!! Why? I just powered through and found my own way. Erin, so important to share. In the 90s, I couldn’t find, in my circle of friends, anyone with similar menopausal symptoms. Gynecologists didn’t have treatments to offer. My bones lost calcium, too. It takes a larger population of women to be heard-to get to at least some of the issues. Keep talking ladies, you are making it better for the next generation!
