Some vfx guys may consider this basic but I always love how griffin shows creative examples I would have never thought of
0 clock
I accidentally discovered this technique a few years go while filming a doc about my grandmother. As I interviewed her, the boom mic slowly dipped into frame. A little masking saved the project. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, wow. This was one of the most informative and helpful videos I've ever seen. I'd never even considered this. Cool.
Thank you Jason!
I just recently used this same trick to take care of a flickering light in the background of an interview shot. I felt like griffin, when I got to the edit I was like, "how can I problem solve this?"
The technique is awesome and this video just all around makes me happy
So simple but you get full credit. Many thanks.
blown away. this is one of the coolest tricks ive seen since i started doing video!
Hi,
it really feels good to find someone like you too use this trick like many of us. Some times I crop / mask the same clip and run them simultaneously at different speed to get certain creative effects. Tools are wonderful if we know to use them rightly. Please do share more of your tricks....
love it love it !!!!! please bring back more episodes of Cheap VS Expensive Things !!!!!!!!!
I really enjoyed this video. Well done, nice sense of humor, I never would have thought about masking out a mic. Cool.
We need more videos like this! Encouraging cooperation between the post & camera departments with the sound department, to get better sound for the audience.
This is actually.... really ingenious.
Nice video! The presentation of the way you visually explained everything looked great. Super clearly presented.
I learn something new and useful with every video you upload. Didn't even know about dragging with the trim tool! Thanks for always making great and easy to understand tutorials.
A lot of people I've worked with thought it was crazy that I did this. A few hours of masking is well worth the vastly improved audio in my opinion.
I remember you talking about this on Indy Mogul years ago!
Such a no brainer once it's been pointed out. Thank you so much!
What a great idea! Never thought of doing this before
Hey it's Robby Huang from Adventure Archives in Griffin Hammonds comment section 😃
Thank you for the helpful tip! Your videos are always so well done and have helped me grow as a filmmaker.
Can’t believe I never thought of this! Great point thanks for sharing!
I recall you giving this tip in another video before. Great tip! Something that I've learned from you and used myself. Thanks Griffin.
I mentioned it a few weeks ago on the podcast, which inspired me to make it a standalone tutorial.
I am glad you are making these videos again
BRILLIANT. Simple. Can't wait to try this!
There's a mic in this bush...you have to talk into it. Actor proceeds to bending into the mic whenever she speaks, gold! XD.
This is such a great video! Looking forward to testing it out in FCPX. Thanks!!
It is so simple that I´ve ever thought of it.... Very nice!
THIS IS AWESOME! Just discovered a rogue mic in my clip. Well, Røde actually. Thanks for this!
Thanks for this Griffin! I’ll definitely be using this technique! I wish I knew about it earlier. I love shooting wide interviews but that usually meant the microphone had to be further away.
Nice explanation. I've done some DIY videos and just left the microphone in the shot, but I'm going to do this going forward.
What a simple, but devastatingly effective idea. Thanks for sharing :)
best ideas still delivered... thanks Griffin
So simple ! I never thought about it !
This is good for masking out people walking in the background in some situations, or distracting shadow movement (blend the still frame with the video - you can make the shadow less prominent).
So simple and easy. Awesome tip!
No way! That is brilliant! Thanks for sharing.
A method I've used involved moving tree leaves so I took the clip from right after the Mic left the shot, time reversed it, dragged it to match up with the start of the original and masked accordingly. It worked seamlessly
I also use the reverse trick in this video. When I loop the clean plate shot for the mask, I run it forward, then backward, then forward-just in case there's any variation. Great trick.
The simplest solution is always the best solution!!!
Excellent tip, didn't know it was possible.
Griffin... You are freaking brilliant!!
Love it! I just did that the other day. In addition, my video card can knock out my screen and mic. Then I just put a green screen effect behind.
Griff, this is brilliant
Oh man, that really helped! Can you make a video showing how you adjust audio levels in FCPX after the the record, and what extra check you do before exporting the file for youtube upload ?
Thank you very much Griffin for that very informative masking tutorial. Your the best!
Just in time for a training video I'm getting ready to shoot
This is really cool , i am a novice with video editing and this is a great use case for masking. Thanks a lot.
Amazingly helpful...thank you!
I guess you've been doing this to solve your mic problems. :p nice.
Your work is really inspiring, you've helped me as well as many other people, who you probably heard praise from already, it is my dream to become an architect; like you, i love the arts and love finding out new information. However I face the complication of constantly doubting myself and my academic capabilities; not including art and other design aspects.
Were you like this when you were studying?
Very nice one-point lesson!
I’ve been doing this for years now, but In a much more difficult way. I take a screen shot then remove what I want in photoshop and save it as a png file. Then I overlay it back in final cut. I think from now on I’ll use your method, it’s quicker.
Yeah, there was a point in my editing career where I was more comfortable doing these kinds of things in Photoshop. I like doing it with video, knowing the moving noise will look more natural than a PNG. But there have been cases where a mic never leaves the shot, so I need to use Photoshop's Content Aware delete to create a PNG to cover it up.
Is this even real 4k? Joking apart, in your video about Ben Grunow you can see a fly that's suddenly appearing at 2:25. But I wouldn't have noticed it without seeing this video first. I hope it makes Nick happy :D.
I've been using this technique to make several things disappear (e.g. people walking through my shot). But I never thought about using it for better audio, what a great idea!
Man thats a really great tip. thanks very helpful
This is such an epic solution, never thought of that!
Thank you so much for this FCPX technique, you made my weekend
Oh my god .. I never even think of this .. Hammers. NEW SUB brother.
Thank you!
Ha! Most times the simple tricks are best! Nice tip! Very useful! Thank you!
That’s an awesome trick that you’ve got.
Great suggestion.
I'm not sure if you already posted a similar video before, but it's a great trick! The problem is when shooting outside and the clouds block the sun. But it's just a little bit of work.
Anyway, this trick saved me a lot of cropping and weird changes of camera.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Griffin! =D
This should go viral.
Thanks soo much for this great tip/tutorial!
Thanks! Found my way around it on Adobe Premiere Pro CS6!
Wow! Great technique thanks so much for sharing.
Such a great idea!!! Wow!
Fantastic tutorial!
Mindblown
Great tip! But what about changing light? For example if the sun goes behind a cloud? The light will change everywhere except for where you put the mask.
Right-that could be problematic. But think about how you're using interview shots. In my edits, interview shots rarely last longer than a few seconds. Even if you mixed two shots with different exposures, as long as the audience never sees the change, they'll never know. You can also color correct the two shots differently to better match.
Yes, that's indeed a workaround. Thanks for your input!
Amazing, I wouldn't have thought about that in regards to microphones!
But what though... (and this sis a real problem I am experiencing with all kinds of masked shots... if your lighting conditions are changing which can happen SO fast when you're outside and even when you're inside...
Thankyou! Very helpful trick 😇
Next level tutorial video 👏👏 Bravo Griffin!
Brilliant!
Fantastic. Thank you. Very good trick
Mind blown , Awesome video 🔥🔥
So helpful. Thank you.
Genious! I never would have thought of that.
Super helpful tip thanks
Thanks Griffin !!!
Funny and awesome video.
This really saves some lives.
Thanks.
Thank you!
This is a good idea and it sounds great, but also remember that you shouldn't use a shotgun Mic Indoors and that you should use a hypercardioid. Always capture sound from above pointing down at the source not from the side... Ive done shots like this a lot for interviews and with the right stand you don't need to be doing post like this!! But he is right sounds WAY better than a lav. Just remember folks Sound travels up and out. You are losing information if you boom straight at the subject! Doing location sound, ive had to capture quality sound in the worst weather so trust me when I say this.
Awesome.. Thanks a ton for this tip
Just brilliant and makes me smile!
This is a great idea
Clever! Anyone know how to pull this trick off using Lumafusion?
Mind ... Blown.
Thank you for this!!
Well done sir!
Awesome, thankyou!
This is gold!!
You can do this with lights as well!!
Very fancy editing! Lol
Movie magic!
Interviews are done around the world using lav mikes, sometimes "head worn" mikes on a talk Interviewers such as Michael Parkinson, Andrew Denton. I saw Terri and Bindi interviewed on American TV, wearing lav mikes. People are so used to seeing that I think this is a solution looking for a problem.
So good
my mind is blown, why have I never thought of this? lol
Nice trick!
Great stuff!
So good!
Pure Genius. Thanks for sharing. Also, how did you attach the RODE mic to your Zoom H5 at 2:34?
I don't think the word genius means what you think it means...
Thank you!
Why haven't I been doing this my whole life?
Amazing.. thanks pro
wow, i learn a new amazing techincs, i will tryit some day , i like see the quality of your videos, super like :)
