In the 18th century in Java there was still the last Hindu kingdom, namely the Blambangan Kingdom. The Blambangan Kingdom also became a colony of the Gelgel & Mengwi Kingdoms from Bali. That's why Blambangan culture has a very strong Balinese influence, where Blambangan is now in Banyuwangi, on the border with Bali. But because of the actions of the VOC, this kingdom disappeared. In an effort to control Blambangan, the VOC ordered the Mataram Sultanate from central Java to attack it with the help of the VOC. The VOC promoted that this was a holy war, a jihad war against the last Hindu kingdom on Java. The VOC also said this was a revenge mission for the previous sultans who had failed to control this region. Finally, the Bayu War (Puputan Bayu) broke out where the Blambangan people were almost wiped out by the genocide of Mataram Islam and the VOC. After completion, this area was opened for plantations for VOC export commodities, but because the population was depleted, the VOC brought in ethnic Javanese Mataraman and ethnic Madurese to work on the land. There is one last Hindu kingdom outside Bali that still exists, namely the Cakranegara Kingdom in Lombok, East Bali. Lombok Island was once controlled by the Karangasem Kingdom from Bali, but in its development, the Lombok Karangasem Dynasty separated from Bali and became an independent country, establishing Cakranegara City. In controlling Lombok, the Dutch asked for help from the Sakra Kingdom, a Muslim kingdom in the east of Lombok. The Sakra Kingdom was assisted by the Gowa Sultanate from Sulawesi and Sumbawa to fight Cakranegara from a long time ago. The Dutch took advantage of this to control Lombok, because the Dutch knew that Muslims were easier to control, fool and mobilize than non-Muslims for the sake of Dutch or VOC rule before. Finally Cakranegara fell in the 19th century and much of its treasures were looted to the Netherlands, now much of it is stored in Leiden, the Netherlands. At the end of last year the Indonesian government succeeded in repatriating a lot of looted colonial property, including from Lombok Cakranegara. Islamization in Indonesia spread more easily because of Dutch support. The Dutch saw that ignorance in the Islamic community in the archipelago was easier for them to control than in non-Islamic areas
Easier to fooled😂 bruuhh In Indonesia muslims were already more civilzed and modernized compared to non Muslims who still pagan inculding balinese who became a human zoo for Dutch people😂 . Not to mention balinese even still naked at that time untill early 90s😂
Cakranegara was part of karangasem kingdom (eastern part of bali), during that time they had 2 modern warship called Sri Cakra and Sri Mataram. When the war was imminent, the king ordered tens of thousands firearms from Singapore, but unluckily both of the ship was detained and caught in java sea by the dutch, and consficated all of them. The king was very tolerant towards non hindus, he even had a lodge/quarter in mecca for his citizen when they were doing pilgrimage. But the again the dutch ruined it. There are still remain some tens of thousands of hindus in lombok till this day.
I'm a balinese myself, the other reason on why balinese still retain thier religion is that in our culture we believe, if we leave our faith and tradition that means we leave our ancestors to the brink of darkness, and that the atmas or the souls of our ancestors, or us in the future can't find or cannot break from the chain of samsara. Basically we firmly believe in karma. great video btw
I can't tell you how much I adore your temples and rituals and culture..aahh everything!! ❤ I'm a Hindu from India and ever since I was like 8 or 9 years old, I've been fascinated by Bali ❤. I first got to know about Bali when I watched an Indian animated movie called "Chota Bheem and the throne of Bali" which had Rangda (from Balinese mythology) as its antagonist and I absolutely fell in love with Bali!! There's a song called "Bali ki kahani" which means Bali's story, and it tells about just how heaven-like Bali is, and the story of Barong and Rangda. You're so lucky to be born there ❤. Balinese people have done a splendid job at preserving and celebrating their Hindu lineage. I really wish to visit Bali someday. ❤
