"Qira'at is late (10th century), and arose because of significant differences (still present!) in the Qurans. It was left, apparently, to ibn Mujahid and others to solve these problems by establishing different, but equally canonical readings. Who gave them authority to do that? If the Quran was perfectly preserved, there would be no need for Qira'at."

Whatever ahruf were they were eliminated in the Uthman standardisation. From that time onwards there should have been just one text of the quran - purely because a human decided what words to use and commanded that all other quranic texts be destroyed. Uthman was a partner of al-lah.

Dear Chris, you do a great job of pointing out the contradictions that the Islamic apologists get themselves entangled in to ensure the perfect preservation of the Quran. But it is very tedious. Wouldn't it be easier to question how it can be that the supposedly eternal Word of God can have dialects that arise from worldly circumstances? If the Quran is an uncreated attribute of God and Arabic is the language of the Quran, how can there be different dialects IN God? And if the dialects do not exist IN God, how can the Qur'an still be the direct word of God?

    • @chrisatspeakerscorner
      @chrisatspeakerscorner  4 месяца назад +3

That's a really good point - I'm interested in opening up lesser known ways of critiquing the "perfect preservation" myth of the Qurans. I do agree that there's much more simpler ways of pointing out the same idea - this way I think is the theological death kneel for perfect preservation because it shows Muhammad never cosigned on 10 different readings that were agreed upon nearly 900 years later - and that 85% (6/7) different "modes" of the Quran have likely been lost.

If the ahrufs are the 7 dialects attributed to the tribes at the time, am I right in thinking that Farid was saying that qirat were effectively compilations from amongst those ahrufs? Isn't that like having a book written in Geordie, then translated into a Cockney version, a Scouse version.... and then compiling a book where you take a bit from the Geordie version, another bit from the Cockney version? Have I understood this correctly?
Elsewhere, I've seen qirats refer to pronunciation, but that would surely be the ahruf, as different dialects have different pronunciations for the same word.

    Farid just made it worse.
In 3 weeks we have gone from "There is 1 perfect quran" to 7 different reading qurans, to 10 recitation qurans, to 70 reading and recitation qurans (7x10), and now with Farid you have 7! Quran. That means 5040 different quran according to Farid, because you can have any combination of the 7.
    There are now 5040 qurans.
Edit: actually, I have just realised it is worth than that. Assuming Google is correct there are 6346 verses in the quran, and being generous lets say you have to pick a reading, you can't mix and match half way through. You can switch between readings as you change verses.
So you actually get 7^6346 qurans.
To put that into perspective my phone breaks calculating that. It breaks after 7^346 at 4.13e307.
No wonder Egypt canonised a reading in 1924.

From, Islamqa, 5142 The revelation of the Quran in seven styles (ahruf, sing. harf)
Secondly, what is meant by styles (ahruf, sing. harf)?
The best of the scholarly opinions concerning what is meant is that there are seven ways of reciting the Quran, where the wording may differ but the meaning is the same; if there is a different meaning then it is by way of variations on a theme, not opposing and contradiction.
    Thirdly:
Some of the scholars said that what was meant by ahruf was the dialects of the Arabs, but this is far-fetched, because of the hadeeth of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab who said: “I heard Hishaam ibn Hakeem reciting Soorat al-Furqaan in a manner different from that in which I used to recite it and the way in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me to recite it. I was about to argue with him whilst he was praying, but I waited until he finished his prayer, and then I tied his garment around his neck and seized him by it and brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I heard this man reciting Soorat-al-Furqaan in a way different to the way you taught it to me.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him, ‘Recite it,’ and he recited it as I had heard him recite it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘It was revealed like this.’ Then he said to me, ‘Recite it,’ so I recited it and he said, ‘It was revealed like this.’ This Qur'aan has been revealed in seven different ways, so recite it in the way that is easiest for you.’”
    (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2287; Muslim, 818)
It is known that Hishaam was Asadi Qurashi (i.e., from the clan of Bani Asad in Quraysh) and ‘Umar was ‘Adawi Qurashi (i.e., from the clan of Bani ‘Adiyy in Quraysh). Both of them were from Quraysh and Quraysh had only one dialect. If the difference in ahruf (styles) had been a difference in dialects, why would two men of Quraysh have been different?
The scholars mentioned nearly forty different opinions concerning this matter! Perhaps the most correct is that which we have mentioned above. And Allah knows best.

If you would be able to find two(or ten) official government sites with qurans, where you can see difference in arabic text and reflection of that in translation(by same person, or at least same translation of same parts by different people). It would mean something.
Yet we all open that greenish quran site, and get information from same source, it would be better to concentrate efforts on contradictions inside text itself.

Read Jeremiah in context. Jeremiah 26:4 "Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: If you do not listen to me and follow my law, which I have set before you," Set before you? Seems like the word of God is preserved after all. Revelation 22:18 is another example of God guarding His word thoroughly.
Your prophet himself confirmed our scriptures. Read sahih bukhari 3635 where muhammad confirmed the Torah and read Quran 3:48 - 50. You can also read mishkat al-masabih 81 where mohammed affirms that God wrote the Torah, jami` at-tirmidhi 2653 where mohammed affirms that the Christians and Jews still have the Torah and the Gospels and sahih al-bukhari 3635 where mohammed uses the Torah as authoritative.
Read sahih bukhari 3635 carefully and next go read about Jesus and the woman caught in adultery John 8:1-11. Both Jesus and mohammad were in the same situation in these cases, but they chose differently. Who is better? The one who sinned (sahih bukhari 6565) and still condemned (sahih bukhari 3635) or the one who never sinned and did not condemn?
Quran 69:44-66:47 allah promised to cut the aorta of muhammad if he lied. After that, read. Sahih al-Bukhari 4428. muhammad can't be a true prophet.

THE BIBLE: The Bible was originally written in three different languages (Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic), on three different continents (Europe, Asia, and Africa), in a time-spend of over 1500 years, by over forty different authors among whom were kings, peasants, philosophers, fishermen, poets, statesmen, scholars, a herdsman, a general, a cupbearer, a doctor, a tax collector, and a rabbi. Without contradicting one another, each author wrote on the common theme of God’s enduring love for mankind, and God’s redeeming plan of salvation through His Son - Jesus Christ.
    *
Unlike the Quran written in a period of about 23 years in Mohammed’s native tongue (the Quraishi tribal dialect and then translated into the Arabic language), the forty plus different authors of the Bible were moved by the Spirit of God to write down truths about God in their own ways of thinking, in their own ways of understanding, and in their own ways of reasoning in that which is truth. Each author also wrote down the truths of God in his own style of compositions - be it essay, music, or poetry.
    *
Critics of the Bible claimed the Bible contains contradictions. How? - Because two different authors living hundreds and hundreds of years apart on two different continents, and whose writing styles (essay, music, or poetry) in two different languages did not use the same word or phrase to describe the same event. How ridiculous the claim!
    *
We must also consider the Bible was not originally written on computer software (Microsoft Disk, iPad, or CD Rom), but rather the Bible was written on papyrus - a wet land plant-based substance (or materials) that would rot and decay; thus, making the transcribers (copyists, clerks) to primitively re-write the Bible by hands unto new papyrus decades, after decades, after decades for centuries, after centuries, after centuries… What monumental feet in all human existence - What an enormous human ingenuity of preservation!
