  • Here is BBC News 24 starting just before midnight on 16 May going into17 May, presented by Peter Dobbie. Things have moved on considerably since six o'clock ( • BBC Six'o'clock News, ... ) due to an incident in Rhyl.
John Prescott's clash with the protester is regarded in retrospect as almost the only interesting incident in an otherwise dull campaign, but at this early stage it wasn't clear that it could be treated lightheartedly and the tone is very serious.
Philippa Thomas reports the story from Westminster, and later has the press coverage. In the middle are reports from Andrew Marr and John Andrew on the other events of the day.

I'd say most people now see the egg incident as something funny, the news at the time treated it very seriously.

Peter Dobbie looks so young in this clip. Now he's with Al Jazeera English and certainly is as good as he was when he worked with the BBC.

19 years ago, and I remember the Two Jags 🥚 throwing incident like it was yesterday, where has all the time gone?. I liked that News 24 branding, the studio set, oh to have it all back in 2020 🤪.

I agree with Prescott punching the guy and I am far from being a labour supporter.
