@Corvus Morve man. I don't think I ever heard anyone say that the Iron Hands are the best. But everyone has their own opinion. That's what so great about 40k. Their is a Primarch/legion, or faction for anyone's personal interest. My personal favorites in no particular order are Rogal Dorn- no bullshit with Dorn. He tells it like it is. Think he is only second to Robute in running the imperium as a whole. His legion isn't flashy(minus templars)but they get it done. He held off Horus mostly on his own for a long time. Even though the odds were so amazingly against him. Plus who doesn't love TTS Dorn. Fortify your positions brother. Vulkan - the most loving and caring of the primarchs and his legion follows. They actually care about humans casualties. Sad to see so many astartes look down on humans when they are supposed to be fighting for humanity. Plus I love how Vulkan has been underrated as a fighter cause he never wanted to hurt his brothers during sparing so never used his full strength. He is by far the biggest and strongest and yet just a big teddy bear. A teddy bear with a heavy flamer. Sanguinious- I don't think there isn't a top 5 without the Angel on it. Unless it's a edgelord chaos worshipper. Then they put wannabe Hawkboy Fulgrim on it. The best fighter of the primarchs and the most pure of heart. He walked to his death with all courage and honor. How many would have done that. Leman Russ- badass space viking. I dont think there isn't anyone who doesn't consider Russ a top 3 Primarch. Even traitor dick riders think so. Think those who don't must play 1k sons. Plus his legion is awesome. Love how they hate the Inquisition and Bjorin the Fell handed says worshipping the Emperor is what got us into this mess. Just a real fun Legion Robute Guillium(unfairly gets a bad rap just simply cause of memes and one man's writing. But GW have done a great job on showing you his personality and struggles since awakening. No one can run a imperium like Bobby G can.) Sanguinious I guess Leman Russ would be my overall favorite just cause how awesome the space wolves are and I have always loved vikings in history.

You both have incredible voices, but whereas you read in an informative way, yet still reference things in our time now, he reads as the Chronicler, an adept tasked by Guilliman himself to inform us in the 42nd millennium. Id pay actual money (I actually support him on Patreon when I can) to hear you two have a discussion on the myriad elements of Warhammer. And in these trying times of isolation and sickness and despair, when Nurgles Rot waxes strong and the other Gods vie for our destruction, it is good to have the glory of our Imperium of Man extolled upon us. I miss the story of the wulfen/death company the Raven Guard once had made up of marines who's bodies mutated and who had gone insane from contaminated gene seed. There was a story where the Raven Guard where ushering these marines into a forlorn hope and the Space Wolves witnessed this and just sort of nodded knowing that the curse could fall upon them any time. I want confirmation that the Black Dragons are a Raven Guard successor you don't have to be a chapter of the Salamanders just because you have a Dragon in you chapter name.

There is an absolutely fantastic novel called "Wergeld" about Corax in the Horus Heresy. It is the end of his heresy story arc so fare, and it also ties in with Leman Russ after his confrontation with Horus in "Wolfsbane" I highly recommend it!
@@baldermort Gav Thorpe wrote most of the Ravnguard narrative in The Horus Heresy, and most of it is a bit lackluster, but he is really good at melding all his smaller less-good stories into a great overall story, and Wergeld is a great payoff. And Russ and Bjorns story also advance well in it.

I am a devoted Raven Guard collector, builder, painter- specifically and strictly from the Heresy Era- (my army, anyway- I still read and enjoy 40K alongside my 30K). I am more focused on the idea that when asked about the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle listed 5 stores 2 of which were written by Edgar Allen Poe. Add in that one of the stores involved an Orangutan murdering 2 women in a locked room. Add in the fact the most famous story on the planet involving the Inquisition was written by Poe. Add in the most famous story in the world about a Raven was written by Poe. Add in the most famous story in the world about nobles falling to the corruption of disease as an anthroponomic man was by Poe. Add in how Corvus freed his home world. An I am picturing Corvus Corax being "the guy in the chair" for a couple hundred Inquisitorial Retinues at the same time. They collect the evidence an do all the physical stuff while he with the aid of Astropaths tells them what too do.
@@iloveplayingpr I believe it would be super easy to take the last story ever written by Edgar Allen Poe (the inspiration for Corax) an convert that into the failed hunt for Lorgar in the Eye of Terror. An instead of the characters walking into a swirling doorway of energy out of the nightmare realm into possible heaven after quitting the vengeance quest instead returning to the Imperium 1,000 or more years after he left.
I have custom chapter called the Shinobi Ravens, They are a Raven guard successor chapter based on moon of Shinobi & have a Ninja-ish look. A tactical squad is called a shuriken & a scout squad is referred to as " the hidden blade" & an assault squad is referred to as a " Spear tip" for example.
No it is in Kurze Primarch book. He mentions with regret that while he haunts the shadows, Corax owns them. He continues by pondering how much he could have achieved if the two of them fought as one.
This one definitely made the ravengauard more badass, i love that sort of rouge/assassin character it's sorta hard to imagine a space marine as one but you illustrated it perfectly
You know what, this has forced my hand. For over a year I've languished over what should be my first model to get and paint. I've always been a big fan of knights, but their cost is just too much for my first model, you know? But I never really gave the Raven Guard much thought before... but this reading. I like it. Now I just got to decide what to get...

Difference is, the Reasonable Marines are more than willing to establish connections with both the Tau Empire and Craftworld Eldar whilst the Tau are the favoured enemy of the Raven Guard.
When I started reading the warhammer books .... I started with the horus heresy . I never knew about the other parts . Like table top and games . Out of all the legions I read about . It was Corvus Corax who caught my mind . His legion especially . Growing up in the dark yet . Within that shadow was a powerful light . Corvus Corax was someone I wanted to know better . WHen I read that he was hunting traitors still in the eye . I grew with hope knowing the shadow was there .
Ok...I will start by graciously thanking you as the Raven Guard are my 1st and all time favorite chapter and believe you have done the most honor to them by your masterful lore telling. I have for years thought that G.W. has shafted the Raven Guard until here recently they only got "honorable" mentions and then it seemed only reluctantly,so I thank you for doing an awesome job of it!

I feel like the Horus Heresy series made so many traits of the legions predestined, whereas the old Index Astartes volumes had intriguing reasons for how they became what they are now. The Raven Guard according to the Index Astartes were always tactically co-ordinated, but their reliance on covert and surgical strikes came from the legion having no other choice following their decimation from the Istvaan conflict and Coraxs desperate measures to accelerate the creation of gen seed, and from there they found they now preferred to work in this manner. Likewise the Iron Hands were always a legion that valued strength above all else, but their preoccupation with machines and becoming cyborgs was something which they began to obsess with as their flaw of despising weakness only accelerating with the death of Ferrus and the loss of their veterans. I just think it seems too convenient how every legion was predetermined, but that's my opinion

I do wish they’d have made it a little less ‘obviously bad, obviously good’ as it just makes it all seem like the emperor made a direct deal with the dark gods and is no enemy of theirs at all. I think the raven guard are almost the epitomy of the art of war. Knowing their enemy, planning in vast detail, choosing their battles. I’ve been very slowly rebuilding from scratch my spaces marines force after getting back into the hobby following a decade or so out of it. I was tossing up whether or not to return to my previous custom chapter or try my hand at a more established army. Then, this Christmas, my cousin gifted me a vanguard strike force. This has made me rethink the strategy I’d play with and, thinking it over and rewatching this video, have helped me make up my mind. So, despite being more a fan of Rogal Dorn or the Lion, my marines shall now be sons of Corvus.
I know, I know. I found it odd when they came out, as Rogue Trader era ghouls like me always think of the Emperor's line. ' I wish the enemy to see my Astartes coming and to know that they will die'. But they grow on you after a while. :) Thank you for listening brother Whoomst. :)

Although not a war directly, there is a great confrontation and comparison between the Ravenguard of Corax and the Nightlords of Curze in Curze’s Primarch book. To move in the shadows vs to be one with them! Curze and Sevatar are in the middle of a bombed out building, when a squad of shadowmaster ravenguard and Corax materializes out of the darkness, to confront them about Konrads latest murders. Curze later thinks to himself, that he did not hate Corax for being a pure, noble and honorable version of himself, but for having a stealth-power, that the Emperor should have given to Konrad also. Just think of how much better a monster he could have been, if he could turn invisible!

my brothers perhaps someone can explain to me why Guilliman openly hated the alpha legion and their shady tactics but seems to be okay with the raven guard? i know they are totally different and the raven guard seemed the most "noble of the two" but to me they both seem to be about that cloak and dagger lifestyle.
It was never the stealthy approach to waging war that Guilliman took issue with. He is above all a pragmatist, and is on record saying that best strategy to win a battle with is whatever one works. But besides a conqueror, Guilliman was also a builder, and he liked to leave each planet his legion passed through functional and capable or running and defending itself. As such, he had no problem with Corax's ways of assassination and surgical strikes, as those still left him with something to work with, sometimes even more than more conventional forms of warfare. Alpharius' approach to the Great Crusade, with mass sabotage and the stoking of numerous internal rebellions, left a planet with its population decimated and demoralized, and its infrastructure in shambles, requiring it almost to be rebuilt from the ground up. It's easy to see why this would be a major pain in the ass for Guilliman.
What a great story! Just incredible the amount of passion and time is spent an each of your videos! The only criticism i have, is that the failure of the raptor project was by no small part due the sabotage of the Alpha Legion.

My FAVORITE legion. They are the Special Forces of the legions. As Baldermort has said they bleed and bleed their enemies, until they are almost BLED OUT. Only then do they reveal themselves to perform the Coup de Grace. Misdirection, sabotage, espionage, assassination and disruption of supply lines and then after all that full frontal assault and hammer their foes into oblivion.

Served in the Marines from ‘07 - ‘13 before I wisened up and transferred to the army (still in) My first taste of WH40K was actually in Afghanistan. A guy taught me how to play using poker chips, cardboard, and Yahtzee dice. He had codexes for blood angels, necrons and dark angels. Bought My first army afterwards, dark angels later refined into the deathwing.

I don't know why but for a while I've been thinking that he will return with a legion of his own. He has become the shadow but has also succumbed to its vices. He has sworn to destroy everything remotely chaos related, now that he knows the truth, it means he himself must perish. He has become an avatar of vengeance. And what legion to best serve under this avatar? None other than vengeance made manifest: the legion of the damned. In recent lore they have become absent, normally present when fate hangs in the balance yet the Imperium faces its darkest hours and they are nowhere to be found. I believe when the time is right, when the forces of the dispoiler make ready to crash into the gates of the Imperial Palace will he return to claim his vengeance

Well the Carcharodons chapter *space shark* are the terran exiles of the raven guard and they fought against the night lords in their book named the Red Tide. They claimed to be from terra itself, got black eyes, white skin, sharp teeth and use the ancient ways of obtaining slaves to replenish their numbers. Mostly a nomadic fleet fighting against the threats of the imperium and running away from the eyes of the inquisition before they arrive later after they exterminated all foes to humanity.

@Corvus Morve man. I don't think I ever heard anyone say that the Iron Hands are the best. But everyone has their own opinion. That's what so great about 40k. Their is a Primarch/legion, or faction for anyone's personal interest.
My personal favorites in no particular order are
Rogal Dorn- no bullshit with Dorn. He tells it like it is. Think he is only second to Robute in running the imperium as a whole. His legion isn't flashy(minus templars)but they get it done. He held off Horus mostly on his own for a long time. Even though the odds were so amazingly against him. Plus who doesn't love TTS Dorn. Fortify your positions brother.
Vulkan - the most loving and caring of the primarchs and his legion follows. They actually care about humans casualties. Sad to see so many astartes look down on humans when they are supposed to be fighting for humanity. Plus I love how Vulkan has been underrated as a fighter cause he never wanted to hurt his brothers during sparing so never used his full strength. He is by far the biggest and strongest and yet just a big teddy bear. A teddy bear with a heavy flamer.
Sanguinious- I don't think there isn't a top 5 without the Angel on it. Unless it's a edgelord chaos worshipper. Then they put wannabe Hawkboy Fulgrim on it. The best fighter of the primarchs and the most pure of heart. He walked to his death with all courage and honor. How many would have done that.
Leman Russ- badass space viking. I dont think there isn't anyone who doesn't consider Russ a top 3 Primarch. Even traitor dick riders think so. Think those who don't must play 1k sons. Plus his legion is awesome. Love how they hate the Inquisition and Bjorin the Fell handed says worshipping the Emperor is what got us into this mess. Just a real fun Legion
Robute Guillium(unfairly gets a bad rap just simply cause of memes and one man's writing. But GW have done a great job on showing you his personality and struggles since awakening. No one can run a imperium like Bobby G can.)

If you think about it, Corax is probably the angriest, most savage and avenging of all the remaining loyalist Primarchs. And for good reason.

I miss the story of the wulfen/death company the Raven Guard once had made up of marines who's bodies mutated and who had gone insane from contaminated gene seed. There was a story where the Raven Guard where ushering these marines into a forlorn hope and the Space Wolves witnessed this and just sort of nodded knowing that the curse could fall upon them any time.
I want confirmation that the Black Dragons are a Raven Guard successor you don't have to be a chapter of the Salamanders just because you have a Dragon in you chapter name.

There is an absolutely fantastic novel called "Wergeld" about Corax in the Horus Heresy. It is the end of his heresy story arc so fare, and it also ties in with Leman Russ after his confrontation with Horus in "Wolfsbane" I highly recommend it!

@@baldermort Gav Thorpe wrote most of the Ravnguard narrative in The Horus Heresy, and most of it is a bit lackluster, but he is really good at melding all his smaller less-good stories into a great overall story, and Wergeld is a great payoff. And Russ and Bjorns story also advance well in it.

I am more focused on the idea that when asked about the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle listed 5 stores 2 of which were written by Edgar Allen Poe. Add in that one of the stores involved an Orangutan murdering 2 women in a locked room. Add in the fact the most famous story on the planet involving the Inquisition was written by Poe. Add in the most famous story in the world about a Raven was written by Poe. Add in the most famous story in the world about nobles falling to the corruption of disease as an anthroponomic man was by Poe. Add in how Corvus freed his home world. An I am picturing Corvus Corax being "the guy in the chair" for a couple hundred Inquisitorial Retinues at the same time. They collect the evidence an do all the physical stuff while he with the aid of Astropaths tells them what too do.
@@iloveplayingpr I believe it would be super easy to take the last story ever written by Edgar Allen Poe (the inspiration for Corax) an convert that into the failed hunt for Lorgar in the Eye of Terror. An instead of the characters walking into a swirling doorway of energy out of the nightmare realm into possible heaven after quitting the vengeance quest instead returning to the Imperium 1,000 or more years after he left.
I have custom chapter called the Shinobi Ravens, They are a Raven guard successor chapter based on moon of Shinobi & have a Ninja-ish look. A tactical squad is called a shuriken & a scout squad is referred to as " the hidden blade" & an assault squad is referred to as a " Spear tip" for example.
Kurze has said that he is jealous of Corax because of how in touch of the darkness he is. I think it is in the Vulkan Lives novel
No it is in Kurze Primarch book. He mentions with regret that while he haunts the shadows, Corax owns them. He continues by pondering how much he could have achieved if the two of them fought as one.

I've always been a big fan of knights, but their cost is just too much for my first model, you know? But I never really gave the Raven Guard much thought before... but this reading. I like it. Now I just got to decide what to get...

When I started reading the warhammer books .... I started with the horus heresy . I never knew about the other parts . Like table top and games . Out of all the legions I read about . It was Corvus Corax who caught my mind . His legion especially . Growing up in the dark yet . Within that shadow was a powerful light . Corvus Corax was someone I wanted to know better . WHen I read that he was hunting traitors still in the eye . I grew with hope knowing the shadow was there .
that would be so cool a book on a war between the raven guard and the night lords perhaps instigated by the alpha legion.

I feel like the Horus Heresy series made so many traits of the legions predestined, whereas the old Index Astartes volumes had intriguing reasons for how they became what they are now. The Raven Guard according to the Index Astartes were always tactically co-ordinated, but their reliance on covert and surgical strikes came from the legion having no other choice following their decimation from the Istvaan conflict and Coraxs desperate measures to accelerate the creation of gen seed, and from there they found they now preferred to work in this manner.
Likewise the Iron Hands were always a legion that valued strength above all else, but their preoccupation with machines and becoming cyborgs was something which they began to obsess with as their flaw of despising weakness only accelerating with the death of Ferrus and the loss of their veterans.
I just think it seems too convenient how every legion was predetermined, but that's my opinion

I do wish they’d have made it a little less ‘obviously bad, obviously good’ as it just makes it all seem like the emperor made a direct deal with the dark gods and is no enemy of theirs at all. Which sort of takes away from the passion to fight a bit?

I think the raven guard are almost the epitomy of the art of war. Knowing their enemy, planning in vast detail, choosing their battles.

I have said it before but your voice acting is amazing
I’ve been very slowly rebuilding from scratch my spaces marines force after getting back into the hobby following a decade or so out of it. I was tossing up whether or not to return to my previous custom chapter or try my hand at a more established army.
Then, this Christmas, my cousin gifted me a vanguard strike force. This has made me rethink the strategy I’d play with and, thinking it over and rewatching this video, have helped me make up my mind.
So, despite being more a fan of Rogal Dorn or the Lion, my marines shall now be sons of Corvus.
Raven guard have always amused me, it makes so little sense for space Marines to be stealthy. Great video though
I know, I know. I found it odd when they came out, as Rogue Trader era ghouls like me always think of the Emperor's line.

Although not a war directly, there is a great confrontation and comparison between the Ravenguard of Corax and the Nightlords of Curze in Curze’s Primarch book. To move in the shadows vs to be one with them! Curze and Sevatar are in the middle of a bombed out building, when a squad of shadowmaster ravenguard and Corax materializes out of the darkness, to confront them about Konrads latest murders.
Curze later thinks to himself, that he did not hate Corax for being a pure, noble and honorable version of himself, but for having a stealth-power, that the Emperor should have given to Konrad also. Just think of how much better a monster he could have been, if he could turn invisible!

my brothers perhaps someone can explain to me why Guilliman openly hated the alpha legion and their shady tactics but seems to be okay with the raven guard?
i know they are totally different and the raven guard seemed the most "noble of the two" but to me they both seem to be about that cloak and dagger lifestyle.
It was never the stealthy approach to waging war that Guilliman took issue with. He is above all a pragmatist, and is on record saying that best strategy to win a battle with is whatever one works. But besides a conqueror, Guilliman was also a builder, and he liked to leave each planet his legion passed through functional and capable or running and defending itself. As such, he had no problem with Corax's ways of assassination and surgical strikes, as those still left him with something to work with, sometimes even more than more conventional forms of warfare. Alpharius' approach to the Great Crusade, with mass sabotage and the stoking of numerous internal rebellions, left a planet with its population decimated and demoralized, and its infrastructure in shambles, requiring it almost to be rebuilt from the ground up. It's easy to see why this would be a major pain in the ass for Guilliman.

What a great story! Just incredible the amount of passion and time is spent an each of your videos! The only criticism i have, is that the failure of the raptor project was by no small part due the sabotage of the Alpha Legion.

My FAVORITE legion. They are the Special Forces of the legions. As Baldermort has said they bleed and bleed their enemies, until they are almost BLED OUT. Only then do they reveal themselves to perform the Coup de Grace. Misdirection, sabotage, espionage, assassination and disruption of supply lines and then after all that full frontal assault and hammer their foes into oblivion.
The Raven Guard and Alpha Legion both share the same origin story: It all started with a game of Hide 'n' Seek and the game never ended.
My week year old infant was throwing a fit. The second you started talking she went quiet and then stayed quiet throughout.

My first taste of WH40K was actually in Afghanistan. A guy taught me how to play using poker chips, cardboard, and Yahtzee dice. He had codexes for blood angels, necrons and dark angels.
Bought My first army afterwards, dark angels later refined into the deathwing.

So Corvus Corax is now the only primarch that can change from being a solid to a fancy ghost cloud. That’s pretty badass.
Corvus succeeded! It was the Alpha Legion’s sabotage that lead it’s failure. All Corvus failed to do was notice the snakes among his nest.
A Raven Guard/Night Lords War? I love the idea! Hilariously, I used Shrike’s early 2000’s model to make my Night Lords Captain

I don't know why but for a while I've been thinking that he will return with a legion of his own. He has become the shadow but has also succumbed to its vices. He has sworn to destroy everything remotely chaos related, now that he knows the truth, it means he himself must perish.
He has become an avatar of vengeance. And what legion to best serve under this avatar? None other than vengeance made manifest: the legion of the damned.
In recent lore they have become absent, normally present when fate hangs in the balance yet the Imperium faces its darkest hours and they are nowhere to be found.
I believe when the time is right, when the forces of the dispoiler make ready to crash into the gates of the Imperial Palace will he return to claim his vengeance

There are probably hundreds of battles versus the Night Lord's, and the Alpha legion, it's just no one knows about them which is how they like it.
Well the Carcharodons chapter *space shark* are the terran exiles of the raven guard and they fought against the night lords in their book named the Red Tide. They claimed to be from terra itself, got black eyes, white skin, sharp teeth and use the ancient ways of obtaining slaves to replenish their numbers. Mostly a nomadic fleet fighting against the threats of the imperium and running away from the eyes of the inquisition before they arrive later after they exterminated all foes to humanity.
