    are raven guard dreadnoughts a thing?

    • @GrimDarkHalfOff
      @GrimDarkHalfOff  Год назад +22

      Yes they are. Though only used rarely. Tactically speaking they function similarly to a Deliverer in the sense they are a surprise towards enemies that become accustomed to fighting stealth operatives with a big explosive attack. The former master of shadows before Kayvaan is currently in one.

      @@matthewflynnthegladiatorof6787 I agree, it's pretty weird. I think it has to do with the ultramarine influence from the Codex Astartes. I'll pin your comment because this information in this conversation wasn't in the video, thanks for asking!

      @Ceiling_Gato Год назад +20

      There's a common misconception about Raven Guard (a meme, really) that all they do is sneaking in a ton of power armor. That's 50% of the job. Sabotage, assassination and misdirection are their primary methods of war, yes, but they use these tactics to throw enemy forces into confusion. Once the enemy is leaderless, weakened and cut away from reinforcements, they utilize rapid insertions with dreadnoughts, terminators, Aggressors and tanks to finish them off with a killing blow. Their 9th company also specializes in overwhelming firepower per Corax's teaching of "stealth is all right but once shit goes down, you need to shoot your way out of it" so it is perfectly fine to include heavy weaponry, dreadnoughts and intercessors into your RG force.

    • @stankobarabata2406
      @stankobarabata2406 Год назад +5

      Plus Dreadnoughts aren't just machines of war. They're the ancient remnants of their chapters, some of which trace back to the time when they were legions. They're as much engines of destruction as they are repositories of knowledge, traditions and battle tactics. They are, for lack of a better word, the SOUL of a chapter in many ways. So even for chapters like Raven Guard and White Scars, who seem to not really favor dreadnought battle usage, the Dreadnoughts still serve a major purpose and are treated with just as much respect as any other chapter would.

    Absolutely adore the Raven Guard. I got Deliverance Lost from a friend for my graduation, and reading it had me feeling so called out by how Corax's mind works and his perception of justice and righteousness. I saw so many of my own passions, my strengths and weaknesses of character, in him. Major major props to Gav Thorpe, who I believe wrote most of the HH era Corax books.

    Ravenguard is my 40K army. It started as a fluke cause I bought the 7th edition kill team box that came with T’au and spacemarines. The chapter pictured was the ravens so I figured I’d paint then that chapter. It was my first purchase for 40K and wasn’t sure I’d like it. When 8th came out I kept Ravenguard as my army and that’s when I knew they were my favorite. I’ve been looking forward for this video since it was announced. Was not Disappointed! Raven guard artolie underrated and they are my favorite Legion. Everybody thinks of them as the emo Marines, but that's just because most legions have become caricatures of what they actually are. The Raven guard have the compassion of the salamanders, a cool berserker rage like the blood angels and the humility of the white scars. People think that the alpha Legion is the stealthiest but I would argue they are the most deceptive. It is the Raven guard who are truly the stealthiest of the legions.
    Take this all into account and add the fact that they are freedom fighters who put fear into the tyrants who oppress the common Man and you got yourself a badass legion.

The Night Lord says that Corax appearing out of the darkness is the scariest thing he’d ever seen. I don’t recall the name of the story, but it’s in the Horus Heresy anthology book called “Corax”… I wholeheartedly recommend that book, and of course, Deliverance Lost as well.

    As someone whose enjoyed the structuring of your Conan videos, I greatly appreciated that structure applied to this setting(and legion).
    Going through the video, Im curious over what there is to say about Coraxs depression, as it relates to his immortality and the human(mortal) connections hes made along the way(namely, in respect to his mortal adopted sister) i cant imagine immortality helping his mental state. But that could lead into a whole different conversation about mortals & immortals interacting.

    It was Baldermorts description of the Raven Guard that made me fall in love with them. The counter to both Alpha Legion and night lords. Where those operate on infiltration and fear, RG literally own the darkness. Where the stealth units would take out the command structure only for the rest of the Astartes to swoop in like a murder of Crows. That and totally not demon Corvus Corax hunting Lorgar and what he's become.
    It's something I've used in my own homebrew, Crimson Raptors, while using a norse theme to reflect the relationship between wolves and ravens irl

    Hang on... Cloth and sand around joints? This sounds very odd and like it wouldn't do anything the way I can picture it. I know how a supportive brace can help weak backs where more muscles work together, but would it help stealthing to wrap cloth around, say, a knee?

    The things I like about the Raven guards is must spacemarina will run up and punch you in the face or hit you with the thunder hammer. But the Raven guard always take the Indiana Jones approaching why don't we just shoot you.

    I’m just getting to this video now, but there is A LOT of psychoanalytic symbolism about the effects of the father on his sons n the relationship between the Night Lord’s and Raven Guard
    Both legions had a similar function prior to their respective father’s arrival. Yet Corvus saw the RG for what they could be, and discarded those who represented the worst excesses of the legion, and challenged them to be better: A.K.A the loving and wise father
    Konrad Cruze hated The Night Lords and thus fed their bloodlust and enabled their sadism and cruelty. A.K.A the aloof and uncaring father

    I like all the legions to some extent but the temperate and understated sons of midnight have never really appealed to me on a personal level so I'm hoping this might change my mind! (btw I consider myself a lorehead though my friends might replace head with master if you're at all interested in some free consulting I'd be more then happy to give it a shot if you want that level of accuracy for your style of content and plan on doing more 40K in the future)

      40k total conversion mod for Grim Dawn - you play as a space marine and can change up your power armor as much as you want sadly there is no Raven Guard armor so I settled for blood angels
