Correspondent Faith Salie talks with the Costume Institute's head curator Andrew Bolton about the treasured object that speaks to tragedy in our nation's history.

@@williamschlemmer5282 She has done nothing to be national treasure to so many of us. Without money, most of these people would have no friends. The lifestyle she leads is unrealistic in the average home. I’ve never watched any of the family mess on tv! Waste of my time.

What I find really fascinating is the family who Mary gave the coat to kept it for over a century.
Well at least they preserved it and was not auctioned off for the highest bidder.
Interesting? Since Mary Lincoln sold her bloody 🩸 dress that Lincoln rested his head on after being shot. Since Lincoln never served in the Civil War, as his wife, she received no pension, so her Dressmaker, a former enslaved woman, helped her sell some of the garments in NYC for her to survive

Abraham Lincoln and Marilyn Monroe are very different. We never learned about Marilyn Monroe in History class, we learn more about Abraham Lincoln then her. And Kim only wore her dress for a few minutes then she wore a replica of the dress. Either way it isn’t Kim or Ripley’s fault, since with Lincoln it’s actual history it isn’t the same with Marilyn.
I'm not at all artistic, but I totally understand the feeling the gentleman was trying to describe. I've seen Lincoln's coat up close and clothing that Washington wore and it is a sort of surreal moment as you gaze at these items and think how these historical figures, known by million upon millions of people worldwide, wore/touched them 150-200 plus years ago.
When I went to Mount Vernon I had similar thoughts. The room I stood in in that very moment, one day the Washington’s spent every day waking up in there to that view. Like I do every day. They had a whole life, all those things were theirs. They really lived, breathed, spoke, and thought there. Enslaved peoples really walked and tended and lived that lifestyle forced upon them there. Famous and important people from all over lived moments there. It's just crazy to consider.
@@BMarie774 yeah, I was mesmerized by the Bastille key hanging in the foyer. To think Washington himself stood at that spot and hammered in the very nail it's container hangs from over 230 years ago. I love that type of stuff.
I was scared there for a moment I thought they let somebody wear his coat.
This makes Kim K wearing the Marilyn Monroe iconic dress, for even 1 minute, so utterly disgusting and completely OUT OF LINE. Just because the mountain is there, it doesn't mean you have to climb it. Just because the bank is on the next street, it doesn't mean you have to rob it. Just because you are a celebrity, it absolutely doesn't mean that it's okay to even broach the subject of borrowing that dress, to diminish its importance for your own selfish needs to be highlighted ABOVE everyone else at an event where everyone is doing the same. Shame on Kim K. all this when I was just beginning to change my world view about her for the better.
Don’t bring that woman’s name into this conversation, she’s not fit to be spoken of in the same sentence as President Lincoln.

Sure, but if you would just take a big step back and try to look at the bigger picture, this coat and Marilyns dress are pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Interesting yes, but material items still.

CBS Sunday morning continues to be an intellectual gift. I started watching in 1982 as an 18-year-old newly married, watching every Sunday morning with my husband while eating big bowls of Captain crunch 😉 I am now a grandma. one of my children is a teacher . We have enjoyed learning from this program.

I saw this at the Ford's Theatre museum in 2005. I never forgot that I saw this. It was almost shocking to see.
There’s always such dark history about the assassinations of both Lincoln and Kennedy, together.

Clearly flawed men but they tried.
Both Lincoln & Kennedy offered positive aspiration for American life and greater possibilities. Lincoln's Second inaugural address and Kennedy's Moon speech are among the two finest delivered speeches for aspiring generations.
I've seen that coat up close. Haunting. Disgusting to even compare it to the decadent Gala.
The Gala is actually a fund raiser for the Met's Costume Institute. But I do not like that they moved Lincoln's coat for this exhibit.
Just because he wore it while attending Ford’s Theatre doesn’t make it a costume. Abraham Lincoln still should inspire a sense of reverence.
@@brucekuehn4031 I agree, Lincoln always felt that he was going to be assassinated for preserving the Union. President Lincoln deserves to be honored in the most reverent of ways.
I guess if Kim Kardashian can wear Monroe's iconic Mackie dress made to match Monroe's skin tone and for Monroe's body alone, without any real reverence of how exploited Monroe was in life, never mind in death, Lincoln's coat from the day he was assassinated is up for grabs too. Zero respect for the dead these days. Zero respect for the lives that embodied the clothing. Let's make historical artifacts like these costumes that anyone can take and wear or display outside of what should be treated with hinor and respect. Who knows, maybe next year at the Gala, Pete Davidson can wear Lincoln's coat and Tom Ford can attach a new sleeve to the missing piece that was once soaked in Lincoln's blood. Give it that modern twist in a classic. 🙄
@@marla591 I understand what you are saying, but want to separate out a couple of things. I don’t think you are comparing Lincoln with Monroe in American history. And Monroe’s dress was originally auctioned off with items from her estate. It was later acquired by Ripley’s which paid the highest price ever paid for a dress at auction. Why they agreed to lend it to Ms Kardashian is a good question, but their museum is not owned by the public.
The coat worn by President Lincoln the night he was assassinated is in a completely different category.

Wow! To finally see the lining! Thank you. It's not at all how I envisioned it. So much better, eagles and shields. I knew about the motto but never envisioned that the seriously reserved Mr. Lincoln had this embroidery over such a large area of the lining. I imagined it as an embroidery over the inner breast pocket. Way to express patriotisms Brooks Brothers! 💜

A very wonderful coat, certainly. Back then, people always dressed so immaculately. His coat is super historical, and it’s a piece of clothing from a man that definitely changed the world.

I don’t think it’s morbid. Honest Abe was a good man who transformed himself into a great man. He changed through out his presidency for the better of our country. Like it’s said, Washington founded the country but Lincoln preserved it.

I had an ancestor who fought at Fort Stevens when Lincoln came under fire. He was killed at Cedar Creek a few months later.

I remember going to the naval museum in Annapolis as a kid, where clothing of commanders and their wives were displayed, JP Jones, Farragut, et al, and wondering why they were so small. I was about 16 and already 6 feet tall. The docent just looked at me and said "You'd have been a giant to them!"
Except that George Washington and Lincoln were well over 6 feet tall - Lincoln was 6'4" - he was really a giant compared to many back then.

Can anyone explain more on why they cut off the bloody sleeve? Was it for preservation or just an attempt to not be morbid or something?
I don’t know much about artifact preservation.
If you listen to the video, he says that the pieces were cut off and sold.

As a historic artifact, that’s remarkable. But what amazes me more is there are people who contemplate clothing in general to such a deeply serious degree. Also, why isn’t the fashion/clothier industrial complex simply referred to as “Big Clothes”?
Iay have had ancestors who fought for the South and l am a "rebel" at heart in my reenacting but the Lincoln assassination was such a tragedy in spite of the high "cost" in lives of the Civil War wrought

This is NOT the coat Lincoln wore to the 1865 inauguration. He was buried in that coat. CBS hipster staffer researchers with their bright purple hair. At least the pictures they showed were really of Lincoln wearing a coat. Bravo & better luck next time. Thanks for playing....

Two key traits every successful person shares is the ability to recognize opportunity and the willingness to take advantage of it.
Recognize that the man and his family who Mary Lincoln gave it to kept it for a century. They didn't cash in on a priceless relic. They didn't gain from it. They gave it to a museum so future generations could get some inspiration of the sacrifice of one great man to his nation. If ten people in the last 150 years were motivated to be better citizens, give selflessly to the country and society, it did more than sitting and decaying in an attic. Until some future relative saw no value and threw out a rag. Who can you imagine today standing up for the truth? Defending The Constitution not a greedy person who wants power? Isn't trying to cash in on his/her power?

A 160 year old coat from a martyr needs more care than just being tossed on a sheet. Fingertips, moisture from breath, humidity and light have to be monitored. If you forget our history, you are condemned to repeat it. Lincoln literally only wore it a few times (it was just made within months of his assassination), and the lining with the symbolic message about the Nation says something about his hopes for a united nation with great destiny and good--only to be cut short. It's about more than just death, which makes his death even more tragic for a nation. If you know history and how the Reconstruction post-war never really took place, you see why the divided nation never truly healed--today's problems have some strong links to Lincoln's unfinished business.
