- Join Dr. Andrea Myers Achi, Mary and Michael Jaharis Associate Curator of Byzantine Art in The Met’s Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters, for a virtual tour of Africa & Byzantium. Art history has long emphasized the glories of the Byzantine Empire (circa 330-1453), but less known are the profound artistic contributions of North Africa, Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia, and other powerful African kingdoms whose pivotal interactions with Byzantium had a lasting impact on the Mediterranean world. Bringing together a range of masterworks-from mosaic, sculpture, pottery, and metalwork to luxury objects, paintings, and religious manuscripts-this exhibition recounts Africa’s central role in international networks of trade and cultural exchange. With artworks rarely or never before seen in public, Africa & Byzantium sheds new light on the staggering artistic achievements of medieval Africa. This long-overdue exhibition highlights how the continent contributed to the development of the premodern world and offers a more complete history of the vibrant multiethnic societies of north and east Africa that shaped the artistic, economic, and cultural life of Byzantium and beyond.

Wonderful. Thank you so much for creating this online tour, especially the narrative. It is important work, in my view. Here I am in Kentucky, USA, viewing this art and history across space and time. And yes, thank you to all those who support this work financially and with guidance.
Thank you for watching!

Pmfsl....Gtffoh With Such BS....These Jesuit Kunsts Did Nothing But Emphasise Rome 🦧 Typical Jews!
Anachronism, blackwashing, wokism. That's what this is all about. @@metmuseum
Hopefully you can add some historians who can shed light of the art of the and world empires like Babylon the Medes and Persians and Greece and Rome all heavily influenced each other has one kingdom rose and another fell but kept elements of the previous kingdom.
thank you so much for making your exhibitions accessible to people around the country and the world through videos like these ! 😊🙏
Thanks for watching!
This is the best content on the internet. Thank you for taking the time to put this together so beautifully
Thank you so much!
Dr. Achi wow! So impressive. I was fortunate to visit the exhibit, but this overview is very informative!
Can't wait to see this.
Dr. Andrea, aside from being stunning, is super insightful and thorough. We can be so lucky!
Finally catching up...these are NOT "new" findings, they are trying though...I'll give them that ! #growth
thank you for your comment!
I saw over thanksgiving and loved it! it was very moving and great to experience in person, but this video and Dr. Achi's book highlights so much more for me, I'm grateful to have the video and the book!
Hello, does the book show a lot more pieces than in this video? I'm thinking about buying the book.
This history was not forget or ignored it was actually stolen. This is highly brazen to deal in stolen art and then pass judgment on they people whos art was stolen. Do yall think these museums pay any rental fee for stolen works of art to the nation it was stolen from?
Well the Roman Empire no longer exists, who do you pay?
Notwithstanding the grammatical errors, your point is well taken and sadly true…..
@@JustinJohn-j4rmaybe just make all museums & exhibitions free to the public at all times? That would be actually useful & in keeping with their intended value.
So much of the stunning works of art would have been looted or destroyed if not for numerous efforts to secure, house, and protect such works. Your criticism is short-sighted and misses the mark completely. Look to the stunning destruction suffered due to the recent Syrian civil war.
@@markboles135so accurate. Thank you.
My Ethiopia, the mystery land holds the key for answers to humankind
How can you proudly display stolen property? The nerve.🤬
The condition of the artifacts is remarkable.
The condition is not remarkable -- all have been professionally restored.
Thanks, 'Met Max' and Andrea, for this timely exhibition.
This is wonderful.
The art seems to get progressively cruder with Christianity and then Islam.
좋은 예술작품 소개 감사드립니다.
유익했습니다 🎉
Beautiful pieces. It really makes you wonder what humanity lost during the atrocities of the Venetians and Franks in the 13th century and of the Turks in the 15th century.
Human sacrifice.. oh what a loss@@kzgntosbaga6255
It’s so sad everything is mass produced anymore. Seeing this art it just makes me cringe seeing low quality images in stores and prints.
In the Russian Icon book they are much darker.
Carbon is king 👑.
Great presentation. 'Looking forward to seeing the exhibition in person.
We can't wait to have you!
I wish this exhibit was still open this summer, this would be a dream come true to see!
ሀበሾች ካላችሁ... ... ... ... እስኪ እንያችሁ!!!
I am not sold on the way this history is being told, yet again it is being told from a white man's perspective..............
Either we make our own platforms or remain forever complaining.
This not all what I expected they changed the faces and skin tone they were all afirican
Absolutely not. Nobody changed anything. They talk about the multi ethnicities in the Roman world - people from MANY different cultural backgrounds.
Nonsense
Stolen art and artifacts have been in all cultures and wars.
Theft had been recently found, at least in Indonesia by a man of wealth, and some are being returned. This man denied it, but he was caught and then died. His family amends.
Thank you, Met. I have been inside the Met many times when I lived in NYC.

Dr. Andrea Myers Achi 🤩😍
Wow, very beautiful! Definitely going to have to see it ❤👍
I see a number of stolen artefacts in this video…
Which ones?
The excessive vocal fry ruined this priceless video guide for me 😖
It's possible that she may have a hearing impediment 💜
How many of these artifacts have been stolen from its countries
No ,question of doubt it was stolen for this purpose.
And imagine what would have happened to most of it if it hadn't been.....it wouldn't exist.
*I'm not trying to be funny, but does she have a speech impediment?*
You can fool some the people some of the time…smh
OH MY GOSH I NEED TO GET THERE RIGHT NOW!!!!!
Amazing exhibition! ❤
Beautiful exhibition with an even better narration! Thank you for this amazing trip in a very interesting historical cultural connection!
Beautiful exhibition, thank you.
Bravo Dr Andrea Myers Achi. Loved it. Great work. Much appreciated 🙏
Thank you!! For showcasing this!
Srolen artifacts give them back to Africans.
Which Africans specifically would you like to give them back to ? None of the people who produced this art are alive today.
Thank you for sharing, it was very informative. My daughter loves the arts and art history. We try to visit a museum on our trips. Just did the Brooklyn Museum
Whitewashed 😢
Beautiful. I will be visiting this exhibit
Bring this to London!!!
Africans the core of everything
Egyptians*
@@faresfs7434 kemet ( fake egypt) Was africans. Dark melanin beings
@@faresfs7434yeah like he said Africans 🤦🏾♂️
Thank you for this exhibition.
Please define the difference between "magic" and relic? Despite trying to normalize Africa's role in international art, your are still othering it by choosing such words. Thank you for making the effort but this is still problematic.
I know it took courage to curate such a collective especially in a time when when everything sahara and above is whitewashed. Wrong history is not valid history. Congratulations on the great job. @akuaTheArtistArtistry
This is my dream exhibition. Thank you!
Beautiful and educational! I need to see this. :D
A very special show. We would love to see it.
Stolen artifacts the lot of it
STOP, POLICE!!!!! THIEF THIEF THIEF

A very special show. We would love to see it.
Nice exhibition tour 🎉💯
So much beauty ruined by Islam...
What are you talking about ? They are all still here and lived under Islam.
What a disgusting odd comment
Ruined by Islam yet the most roman artifacts outside of Rome is in algeria an... Islamic country
NO Serbia, Russia is still full of Constantinople art not Byzantine how Roman empire call it.
You have nothing in the brain 🧠
Byzantium = Rome
No
@rebellefleur2993 Yes, Byzantium is a term that is used by modern historians to distinguish the surviving Roman empire from the Holy Roman Empire.
Byzantine is Constantinople and Roman empire is Roman empire today's western world and Chatocolic
Long live the eastern Orthodox Churches. From Ethiopia through Egypt, the middle east, eastern Europe, and Russia.
amazing video. I enjoyed looking at the art and listening to the history.
History is political.
Sublime, thank you

The vocal fry!! Ouch 😣
WOH!!! I got to make a trip to see this.
How did they make a single tile?
Incredible
I want to view this show. *books flight to NYC
Artemis had blue skin...this race of beings disappeared
Or…..it’s just artistic license
Share stole stories!
*_Notice how 99% of these mosaics dont depict blonde blue eyed germanoids and anglo-saxons?_*
Yeah are right brother
Whats your point?
I mean….yeah. They were Anatolians and Greeks not Germanic.
Is this an exhibition based in London?
All three of the Abrahamic religions were born in the Nile valley.

Truth is coming out.
