This video made me play FF XIII-2 and I'm enjoying it. But is it just me, or do Serah and Noel have waaaayyyy more chemistry and seem like a better match than Serah and Snow? In the first game I though Snow and Lightning had better chemistry too. (I remember playing FF13 and watching Snow & Lightning interact like "Will you two just sleep together already?")
My favorite moment from 13-2 was Noel caressing Serah hair after the ending while giving her some lofty compliments. It was the most subtle "I may have romantic feelings for you" thing I've ever seen in a game.

13-2 is easily one of my favorite final fantasy games and just one of my favorite games over all. The plots not that hard to follow it just takes some patience and time to grasp it but once you do it clicks and works. Caius and yeul are two of my favorite characters in video game history and just add such a layer of depth to this game. I dont care what anyone says the 13 trilogy was not that bad and yes I have completed them all 100% and yes I have played many other final fantasy games and the trilogy are still my favorite.
Same. The XIII trilogy is among my favorite ff games, and the gameplay really holds up in retrospect. Every two years or so I get the urge to okay through them again, and I really enjoy it.

I've only seen a handful of your videos, but it seems like you're pretty open-minded toward the games you talk about. It's really refreshing hearing someone talk about the good and the bad without making every imperfect game out to be a steaming pile of crap that nobody should waste their money on. Not every Final Fantasy can be Final Fantasy 6/7, but they can all still be enjoyable games if you actually give them a chance.
Serah was the third wheel in ALL RESPECTS in my game. She invariably had the worst stats out of the party, I THOUGHT she could synergize, when she really, really can't, she really didn't need to be here for the story, and Noel could have just take two monsters, and when she did get involved in the story, she ALWAYS needed to be saved by Noel. Also, did Lightning know her cardboard sister would die if she changed shit? Because if she did, Lightning is the best person ever.
"Yell at hope" I've never been so pissed at a dialogue choice, I tried everything other than that first and when I found out what actually was supposed to work it's just.... ugh. I won't say anything much about it but for me personally i could HEAR MY SOUL SHATTERING.
I think the idea there was that you're supposed to fight the fal'cie over and over to simulate sarah getting pissed off, leading her into having a small break and yelling at hope
I found XIII-2 a much better game than XIII. The story was easier to understand, and I found Noel, Caius, and Serah much better characters than the cast of XIII. Using the monsters as allies was a very unique way to customizing your party with only having two characters.

13-2 is a highpoint of the entire franchise for me. It's fun, lots to do, strongest characters since FF9, Battle but system is fun, it's has just enough challenge, and it's gorgeous. And the music is great. And I love that ending.
Bought this on a whim not trying the previous game and its a top tier FF imo. The music is godly, the story is okay and I really liked Noel and Serah as the co leads and had some genuine emotional scenes which have always made me fond of jrpgs

The story actually isn't confusing. It made sense to me the first time I played it. The only way you possibly might not understand the story is if you play the game with completely no idea how time travel works.
+supster131 I understood most everything except the whole "changes in the future affect the past" stuff. It seemed like they made time out to be like a lake rather than a river.
philberto78 it makes sense mainly because of the whole reason Caius being evil. His whole motivation happens because a character keeps dying from seeing changes in the future. So by changing the future the past gets changed and creates a butterfly effect, creating our main antagonist.
If you change the future you change the past, because there are characters that can see the future and alter the timeline. With the oracle drives, and the visions, and the time gates, doing one thing in one timeline can lead you to access and change other timelines. It's a ripple effect that expands until time breaks.
Maybe I'm crazy or stupid. Meh maybe both. I really liked ff xiii and the sequel. I played them back to back and really enjoyed it. The xiii 2 there a lot of parts that really pissed me off. overall the gameplay is good and the historia crux is pretty cool. I am a hardcore fan of the classic ff games. I can't stand ff xi online and ff realm rebored and the add on. I got lightning returns but haven't touched it yet because i am doing the completionist thing. 80 hours on ff xiii, 70 hours ff xiii 2. Can't complain. I didn't pay 60 bucks per title I got them for 10 dollars each and for the time spent playing I feel like I got my money's worth. However, if I paid 60 per title I would make this kind of video.... Lmao good vid.
I don't get why people struggle to follow the stories in these games. Even if some details are iffy, i've never had trouble understanding what's going on even once. An yas know how yas do it to yourselves? You overcomplicate a lot of things right off the bat. Take FF XIII an the focus for instance. A lot of people commented that they kept banging on about never even knowing what the focus was. They were slaves to this destined fate from the beginning so shouldn't it have been obvious at some point they were not gonna care, say " f This, i make my own destiny"? As for FF X it was easy. You could see em all becoming atheists ages ago once seymour revealed how corrupt his fellow popes an pastors were....oh sorry i meant MAESTORS lol

Oh this game... which improves on almost all the issues I had with XIII except the story, which it made even worse in my opinion. The game is far more open ended, there is a ton of stuff to do, and the combat isn't as automated early game as it is in XIII. But because I love good stories in my games, especially my RPGs, I cannot get over the bad characterisation and story enough to enjoy the game.
13 had a good story and it was told pretty well, until the end when they dump a bunch of new shit on you and then it ends. One of the Better FF stories, it was really original too.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 was by far the game I had the best experience with. Of course, I had so much fun with the classics as a child, but I never wanted XIII-2 to end. The music, the gameplay, the core plot (meaning Caius and Yuel). I got 100% on my first playthrough and never got tired of it.
I actually really enjoyed this game (though I haven't beat it all the way through yet). I haven't encountered enough issues in the plot to be confused yet, thankfully, though my extensive research into theoretical physics does have me eye twitching with this game at times.
About how long will it take you to do Lightning Returns? It's my favorite FF game in the franchise and since you obviously like the other two games I was wondering what your thoughts on it were.

Good to see someone who didn’t fall for Sarah like everyone else did. She’s not as awesome as everyone says she is, and even outshadowed Noel, when he has so much more character and story.
my favorite out of the trilogy and one of my favorite in the series. Had very low expectations for this game. Didn't play it until two years after the release. But it ended up being a very good game. and that tower part was by far the worse part of the game. But usually every rpg has one of those, but in this case it was one of the worse
XIII-2's plot isn't particularly difficult to understand, it's just straight up dumb. Like... baby's first time travel story, written by folks who clearly don't read or watch a lot of sci-fi, because it's just idiotic. Like... seriously, just.... uhg.... Don't get me wrong, the gameplay of this game is awesome, but as a sci-fi nerd the story makes me want to hang myself.
I have heard so many people complain and hate 13-2 but it was the first ever final fantasy game i have ever played and i really really liked it ; v; And that ladies and gentlemen is why i liked noel so much i now consider him my son.
I actually just found my copies of FFXIII, FFXIII-2, and Lightning Returns while packing my house up for a move. I never beat 13 so I think I'll be marathoning them once the frigid hellscape of winter hits. Edit: and I am aware Lighting Returns throws all of this out the window and cranks difficulty to 11.

You know, aside from why this sequel was ever _made_ ...I have one other question: Did Lightning _know_ all of this was going to kill Serah? Because if she did, she inevitably sent *her own sister, the only family she had left* to her demise. I mean, I played XIII-2 and understood what Lightning's role was in this title. She is supposed to be "something beyond gods" or whatever; I can't recall -- and from Valhalla, she explicitly states she "can see everything". Given all of this, she should be able to see what Serah is doing at all times and even know what's going to happen next. I would imagine she knew what would happen to Serah, yet she never even attempts to tell her sister of her fate? Am I missing something? Yeah... She really cared. -_- Just when I thought I couldn't dislike Lightning anymore than I do. XIII-2 was a mess of a story -- I'm sorry.
I loved the story, and it to me simply improved on something we start subtly noticing about lightning later on in the first game, she's after power, by any means. I fully believe she knew exactly what was going to happen and even the effects it would have on the world, possibly to specifically lure out bhunivelsa to kill and claim his roll as head God. And simply used her sister as a sacrifice for this.
I had this running in the background while I was cleaning and I legit thought you were talking about dr who in the beginning when talking about the plot 😂
At least the story made better sense in this compared to the previous game. Noel was sent to mend time and overcome time paradoxes. What's hard to follow?
13-2's gameplay and battle system was the absolute best.This is still one of the best games of all time for me. I think the only thing that it lacked (aside from a coherent story that makes sense) was a hub world of some sorts. It didn't have to be a giant field or anything, but just something to make it not feel like we were choosing worlds from a menu. They could've gone the Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep route and had the different timelines in a space you could float to. Or they could've used the Historia Crux as a sort of home base, which was wasted potential honestly, since they did have some times where the Crux glitched and they ended up in those ruins a few times. Those ruins would've been a perfect home base.
I actually really enjoyed Final Fantasy 13-2 I thought the combat was majorly improved and the music was really good as well. My only issue was of course the convoluted Story plot that tied it to Lightning Returns. But still it was fun for what it is

The only "valuable" information is that lightning accepts she failed and will enter a permanent slumber till she is ever needed again. That's exactly how it was phrased. Which is my 1 gripe with the ending, it sounds and looks like bad ending but has this awkward "to be continued " attached at the end. The dlc isn't required, never was, people perpetuate the myth the ending was locked behind dlc when said dlc isn't even promoted like that and changed virtually nothing and takes place during the ending not after.

You're actually wrong about the chocobos. Cloudburst is the best Ravager, Chichi is the best Commando and Goblin Chieftain is the best Sentinel. And you can get all of these on your first visit to the Archytle Steppe and break the game Edit: you actually need to get the enhanced throw fragment skill first for Chichi. And part of the reason why GC and Cloudburst as so good, especially together, is that their feral links will literally give every buff you will ever need. Bravery, Faith, protect, shell, veil and vigilance. And the best part is, with feral speed 2 their feral links will recharge before the buffs wear off
13-2 feels like a soft reboot for 13 when it comes to it's world and lore, especially since they basically retcon the ending of the first game. It's definitely my favorite out of the 3 games, the gameplay (especially combat and the monster system) is so much fun and you get a better idea of what this world is like both on a macro and micro level which was one of my major criticisms of the first game. In the fist game, aside from the final big open area in the third half, each environment felt disconnected and it didn't help that there were so few towns to explore at your leisure. It left me with the feeling that I really didn't have any idea of what this world was like geographically, what cultures occupied it's different parts, or what the people living in it were really like. This was all pretty much completely fixed by 13-2, while I'm still not the biggest fan of the lore, I felt like I at least had a better idea of the smaller nuances that make the world feel more lived in.
I love this games game, art, levels, and OST, I really wish they made this the real 14 or 15 with a slew of new characters and good story to accompany the gameplay, art, levels, and OST
I liked the game better than XIII. Not only the gameplay is better, but the story is pretty fun too. Yes, even though they've put time travel, I didn't think it was confusing. Instead, it fixed the original game's ending which made no sense to me.
I’m actually playing 13 again after nearly a decade. My opinion was always that each game was mediocre at best for various reasons but the more time I spent with them by the end I felt like each of the cast were close friends I’d have to say goodbye too. And while I have grown a new fondness and am less harsh to the individual games I still can’t help but feel the the full product is greater than the sum of its parts. Plus the voice acting was pretty good mostly. Troy Baker of course but even lightning and sazh are really good
You CAN understand the game's story a bit if you dig and look for the stories about the gods...Which not something you can find in the game. Which is a fucking problem in itself tbh. But hey, once you read the adventure of the most unlucky goddess, Etro, you're in for a few laughs.
My first copy of the game wouldn't load the first time you visited Bresha Ruins. I legit sat there for around an hour waiting for it to load, which it never did. From what I saw, it wasn't a common problem either.
When it came to ff13 I was knew there was going to be a sequel end it was going to be based on time travel because of the necklace the both Sarah and snow ware, it is identical to what cocoon eventually looks like at the end of the game
nice video, it seem older final fantasy with medieval theme and turn base battle is more playable to me. Had to resort to watching a video on ff13 for beginner to know that some of the game mechanic that make no sense is really making no sense.

The story actually isn't confusing. It made sense to me the first time I played it. The only way you possibly might not understand the story is if you play the game with completely no idea how time travel works.

philberto78 it makes sense mainly because of the whole reason Caius being evil. His whole motivation happens because a character keeps dying from seeing changes in the future. So by changing the future the past gets changed and creates a butterfly effect, creating our main antagonist.

If you change the future you change the past, because there are characters that can see the future and alter the timeline. With the oracle drives, and the visions, and the time gates, doing one thing in one timeline can lead you to access and change other timelines. It's a ripple effect that expands until time breaks.
Maybe I'm crazy or stupid. Meh maybe both. I really liked ff xiii and the sequel. I played them back to back and really enjoyed it. The xiii 2 there a lot of parts that really pissed me off. overall the gameplay is good and the historia crux is pretty cool. I am a hardcore fan of the classic ff games. I can't stand ff xi online and ff realm rebored and the add on. I got lightning returns but haven't touched it yet because i am doing the completionist thing. 80 hours on ff xiii, 70 hours ff xiii 2. Can't complain. I didn't pay 60 bucks per title I got them for 10 dollars each and for the time spent playing I feel like I got my money's worth. However, if I paid 60 per title I would make this kind of video.... Lmao good vid.
XIII-2 is probably one of my favorite games of all time.
I don't get why people struggle to follow the stories in these games. Even if some details are iffy, i've never had trouble understanding what's going on even once. An yas know how yas do it to yourselves? You overcomplicate a lot of things right off the bat. Take FF XIII an the focus for instance. A lot of people commented that they kept banging on about never even knowing what the focus was. They were slaves to this destined fate from the beginning so shouldn't it have been obvious at some point they were not gonna care, say " f This, i make my own destiny"? As for FF X it was easy. You could see em all becoming atheists ages ago once seymour revealed how corrupt his fellow popes an pastors were....oh sorry i meant MAESTORS lol
Thanks a lot! I was not sure if 13-2 would be good enough like 13 because of the lack of Lightning. But after watching this video about an year ago, I purchased the game on steam and absolutely loved it. Better than 13 in gameplay mechanics and design.
I actually cried at the end. Not for Serah, but for Noel because his heart too pure for this dark world TT~TT I couldn't believe it ended like that. I almost felt like I wasted my time

I'm not one to go out of my way to get trophies, but XIII-2 was the first game I platinum because I had so much fun I tried to extend my playtime.

Oh this game... which improves on almost all the issues I had with XIII except the story, which it made even worse in my opinion. The game is far more open ended, there is a ton of stuff to do, and the combat isn't as automated early game as it is in XIII. But because I love good stories in my games, especially my RPGs, I cannot get over the bad characterisation and story enough to enjoy the game.
13 had a good story and it was told pretty well, until the end when they dump a bunch of new shit on you and then it ends. One of the Better FF stories, it was really original too.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 was by far the game I had the best experience with. Of course, I had so much fun with the classics as a child, but I never wanted XIII-2 to end. The music, the gameplay, the core plot (meaning Caius and Yuel). I got 100% on my first playthrough and never got tired of it.
I actually really enjoyed this game (though I haven't beat it all the way through yet). I haven't encountered enough issues in the plot to be confused yet, thankfully, though my extensive research into theoretical physics does have me eye twitching with this game at times.
About how long will it take you to do Lightning Returns? It's my favorite FF game in the franchise and since you obviously like the other two games I was wondering what your thoughts on it were.

my favorite out of the trilogy and one of my favorite in the series. Had very low expectations for this game. Didn't play it until two years after the release. But it ended up being a very good game.
and that tower part was by far the worse part of the game. But usually every rpg has one of those, but in this case it was one of the worse
XIII-2's plot isn't particularly difficult to understand, it's just straight up dumb. Like... baby's first time travel story, written by folks who clearly don't read or watch a lot of sci-fi, because it's just idiotic.

I have heard so many people complain and hate 13-2 but it was the first ever final fantasy game i have ever played and i really really liked it ; v;
And that ladies and gentlemen is why i liked noel so much i now consider him my son.
I actually just found my copies of FFXIII, FFXIII-2, and Lightning Returns while packing my house up for a move. I never beat 13 so I think I'll be marathoning them once the frigid hellscape of winter hits. Thanks for the tips, your videos have been great refreshers since the 13 series is so different from other final fantasy games.
Edit: and I am aware Lighting Returns throws all of this out the window and cranks difficulty to 11.

You know, aside from why this sequel was ever _made_ ...I have one other question:
Did Lightning _know_ all of this was going to kill Serah? Because if she did, she inevitably sent *her own sister, the only family she had left* to her demise. I mean, I played XIII-2 and understood what Lightning's role was in this title. She is supposed to be "something beyond gods" or whatever; I can't recall -- and from Valhalla, she explicitly states she "can see everything". Given all of this, she should be able to see what Serah is doing at all times and even know what's going to happen next.
I would imagine she knew what would happen to Serah, yet she never even attempts to tell her sister of her fate? Am I missing something? Yeah... She really cared. -_- Just when I thought I couldn't dislike Lightning anymore than I do. XIII-2 was a mess of a story -- I'm sorry.
I loved the story, and it to me simply improved on something we start subtly noticing about lightning later on in the first game, she's after power, by any means. I fully believe she knew exactly what was going to happen and even the effects it would have on the world, possibly to specifically lure out bhunivelsa to kill and claim his roll as head God. And simply used her sister as a sacrifice for this.
I had this running in the background while I was cleaning and I legit thought you were talking about dr who in the beginning when talking about the plot 😂
At least the story made better sense in this compared to the previous game. Noel was sent to mend time and overcome time paradoxes. What's hard to follow?
13-2's gameplay and battle system was the absolute best.This is still one of the best games of all time for me. I think the only thing that it lacked (aside from a coherent story that makes sense) was a hub world of some sorts. It didn't have to be a giant field or anything, but just something to make it not feel like we were choosing worlds from a menu. They could've gone the Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep route and had the different timelines in a space you could float to. Or they could've used the Historia Crux as a sort of home base, which was wasted potential honestly, since they did have some times where the Crux glitched and they ended up in those ruins a few times. Those ruins would've been a perfect home base.
I just found your 'for beginners' series and they're so awesome. Can't wait to see more
I actually really enjoyed Final Fantasy 13-2 I thought the combat was majorly improved and the music was really good as well. My only issue was of course the convoluted Story plot that tied it to Lightning Returns. But still it was fun for what it is

@@thefreeburningspirit false, the lightning dlc literally changes nothing about the original ending and ends in the exact same place. The only "valuable" information is that lightning accepts she failed and will enter a permanent slumber till she is ever needed again. That's exactly how it was phrased. Which is my 1 gripe with the ending, it sounds and looks like bad ending but has this awkward "to be continued " attached at the end. The dlc isn't required, never was, people perpetuate the myth the ending was locked behind dlc when said dlc isn't even promoted like that and changed virtually nothing and takes place during the ending not after.
Good video! I'm surprised you didn't focus or mention at all how annoying those clock puzzles are! Its the only reason I dread playing the game multiple times since I have to do them to advance the story.

I don't get the hate for this. It's the best of the FF13 games. My first time through the game, I got really great Chrono Trigger vibes.

You're actually wrong about the chocobos. Cloudburst is the best Ravager, Chichi is the best Commando and Goblin Chieftain is the best Sentinel. And you can get all of these on your first visit to the Archytle Steppe and break the game
Edit: you actually need to get the enhanced throw fragment skill first for Chichi. And part of the reason why GC and Cloudburst as so good, especially together, is that their feral links will literally give every buff you will ever need. Bravery, Faith, protect, shell, veil and vigilance. And the best part is, with feral speed 2 their feral links will recharge before the buffs wear off

13-2 feels like a soft reboot for 13 when it comes to it's world and lore, especially since they basically retcon the ending of the first game. It's definitely my favorite out of the 3 games, the gameplay (especially combat and the monster system) is so much fun and you get a better idea of what this world is like both on a macro and micro level which was one of my major criticisms of the first game. In the fist game, aside from the final big open area in the third half, each environment felt disconnected and it didn't help that there were so few towns to explore at your leisure. It left me with the feeling that I really didn't have any idea of what this world was like geographically, what cultures occupied it's different parts, or what the people living in it were really like. This was all pretty much completely fixed by 13-2, while I'm still not the biggest fan of the lore, I felt like I at least had a better idea of the smaller nuances that make the world feel more lived in.
I love this games game, art, levels, and OST, I really wish they made this the real 14 or 15 with a slew of new characters and good story to accompany the gameplay, art, levels, and OST

I liked the game better than XIII. Not only the gameplay is better, but the story is pretty fun too. Yes, even though they've put time travel, I didn't think it was confusing. Instead, it fixed the original game's ending which made no sense to me.
I’m actually playing 13 again after nearly a decade. My opinion was always that each game was mediocre at best for various reasons but the more time I spent with them by the end I felt like each of the cast were close friends I’d have to say goodbye too. And while I have grown a new fondness and am less harsh to the individual games I still can’t help but feel the the full product is greater than the sum of its parts.
Plus the voice acting was pretty good mostly. Troy Baker of course but even lightning and sazh are really good

You CAN understand the game's story a bit if you dig and look for the stories about the gods...Which not something you can find in the game. Which is a fucking problem in itself tbh.

My first copy of the game wouldn't load the first time you visited Bresha Ruins. I legit sat there for around an hour waiting for it to load, which it never did. From what I saw, it wasn't a common problem either.
When it came to ff13 I was knew there was going to be a sequel end it was going to be based on time travel because of the necklace the both Sarah and snow ware, it is identical to what cocoon eventually looks like at the end of the game

nice video, it seem older final fantasy with medieval theme and turn base battle is more playable to me. Had to resort to watching a video on ff13 for beginner to know that some of the game mechanic that make no sense is really making no sense.
