Yes…at this moment in time, I will agree, the damned are the greatest band of all time!! I don’t much concern myself with their eclecticism these days, though, as with the sheer BLUDGEONING FORCE with which they played on the first couple singles/debut lol…oh, and on melody Lee lol I believe when people think of punk’s forward-propulsion, and then they play Never Mind The Bollocks they’re like, “wtf if this?!?”…not that I don’t love NMtB, and I do realize “Punk” was NEVER meant to imply anything like uniformity in playing styles or anything…that’s kinda how it evolved/devolved into some of the crappier hardcore bands from the 80s. But I digress… The Damned’s first couple lps - and stiff little fingers* lol - are who I go to for some buzzsaw guitar and some freaking HUMOR, man, I think we sometimes overlook that aspect of The damned… Lord knows, some of these guys who become rock stars, right away the sense of humor goes right out the window lol… * - ok, the buzzcocks too…
@@force263 Have you hit your head recently or something? Seems like maybe you are suffering from what’s known as “meat-thermometer-wedged-deep-in-the-ear-canal” syndrome.🤦♂️
Bought the MGE album on the day of its release and i still feel there is no song of theirs better than Melody Lee. Maybe only equal to it. It has to be a short 2 minutes as any more would dilute its beauty. The vocals seem to reach forever. They are brilliant.
Michelle Vigurs sounds like a comment a 13 year old would make "look at me I'm cool"people like different strains of music that is what makes music special one man's meat is another man's poison or in your case a woman
That whole Deadly Class pilot was packed full of awesome songs, but super glad this classic got some exposure. The whole album (Machine Gun Etiquette) is fanfuckingtastic, and if anyone is unfamiliar with them, I recommend starting there. It's still early enough that it's not in their "goth" phase yet, and not as rough as their first album. Power pop Brit punk, through and through.
Its been my fave album of theirs since the day i raced home with it on its release day around 79-80. It completely floored me and swept me away somewhere.
Melody lee, a broken man and a broken dream It must have been a change of heart Your life was cruel they called it art Melody lee, you need a nuke to set you free You know you can't cheat tomorrow If you hide any sorrow Melody lee, you gotta find your secret enemy You're on the run with nowhere to go If you die someone to know Forget your heart, you need not stay A second longer than today
52? Your just a pup. I fell in love with this track in..... 1978 at 14 years old. Best Christmas present I ever had, Machine gun etiquette. My eldest sister gave my mum some guidance for a prezzie for me. God I love my sister, my mum and the Damned. 😘
I didn't like how they didn't get to go as dark as the comic is and also how they jump right into the romance and shit with saya tbh as soon as i did i became infuriated
Just got my G2 the other day, so today was the first day I was allowed to drive around on my own. Put in Machine Etiquette, turned it up and shouted along. It was awesome. Love this song, this album, and this band.
I was just thinking of looping it, now you have inspired me to put my thought into action. Cheers. God bless and please stay away from strangers in white coats armed with syringes.
and Melody Lee was a caracter out of the Bunty comic. She was a ppar dancing girl in a childrens home and the story went on forever. I even remember the teachers name, Miss Creef...we did a demonstration in Fleet street with banners saying "bring back Melody Lee"
Kelly14UK Yeah, I can see that. I think the recieved wisdom was though that McLaren was a bit of a nuisance. He certainly striped the band up! Are you going to The Damned's 40th. in May?
1988 with the Sham. John Anson Ford amp. Los Angeles. Open? Hmmm who do you think opened? Sham are the best in their own Reich. What a performance by both best bands.
Damned? the soul that came up with that achingly beautiful intro is , rather, in fact blessed. If it was Elton John's,as someone suggests below, then the souls that felt it fitting in a punk song are equally blessed.

What I like about the early Damned is that they weren't concerned so much with how fast they played so much as they were with performing an idea. A lot of bands were obsessed with playing faster than Blitzkrieg Bop, and they sucked.

Early Damned albums - as good as punk gets. Great live also. All went tits up for me when Vanian turned goth, although Strawberries was still a great album. At least they progressed in a punk-stylee rather than going all dub and reggae like the Clash. Last saw them in about 1985 in a small 'punk' festival near Brixton - miles better than the other acts.
Just checked - last saw them at Brockwell Park, Brixton 1984. Great live!! Other bands that day were crap. None of us cared for pretentious crap or the GLC.
what a melody! Another great song from the world's most under rated band ever!
The Damned are the greatest band of all time! Incorporating many different sounds. Piano, horns etc.

Deadly Class brings me here
A burst of speed, a change of heart
Your life was cruel, they called it art!!!! Epic.
My favourite Damned track. Classic. Brilliant lyrics. Short sweet - Awesome.
Grew up to these guys while my friends listened to Wham, Duran, Spandua and the like....luv 'em :)
I like Wham, Duran AND The Damned. They all rule.
The Damned's aesthetics and Duran's mix well, love them both.
wham and duran they sucked nobody i know listened to them it was sabbath or zappa
Michelle Vigurs sounds like a comment a 13 year old would make "look at me I'm cool"people like different strains of music that is what makes music special one man's meat is another man's poison or in your case a woman
Or you can appreciate any type of music

i love the piano melody intro...sounds like tears..
Melody lee, a broken man and a broken dream

Agreed....Algy Ward is a boss bass player.
My favorite Damned song, this is one song, even now, I’m 52, and it still turns me into Instant Headbanger!!
YEAH!!! 🤜 🤜 🤜 🤛 🤛 🤛 🤯 🤯

#DeadlyClass (s1e1) This is going to be a brilliant series I can't wait for the next episode 😉😉
my absolute favorite Damned song!!
The greatest rock lp of all
In 1995 Lemmy said he wanted to tour with the Ramones with the Damned as an opening act! Too bad that dream triple-bill never materialized!
The Damned open? Hahaahaha hahaahaha
@@cardealyogrossmanski8445 But the Damned did open for Motorhead more than once
The Damned have always been bigger than Motorhead
@David Bolger Who on earth are TANK?
You guys know there was Motordamn I presume?
I love this song!
Dieses Lied bringt mir Tränen des Glücks
Such a beautiful intro.
Who else is here after the Deadly Class pilot?
here...badass pilot
I had it on in the other room while I was working and I heard that piano. Got up, hit rewind and here I am.

I was just thinking of looping it, now you have inspired me to put my thought into action. Cheers. God bless and please stay away from strangers in white coats armed with syringes.
the Damned freakin rocks these guys are the real deal great Band live.
The intro and what happens after; like a crash bang wallop is so good that I had to play this twice and the guitar break is so that era Damned.
and Melody Lee was a caracter out of the Bunty comic. She was a ppar dancing girl in a childrens home and the story went on forever. I even remember the teachers name, Miss Creef...we did a demonstration in Fleet street with banners saying "bring back Melody Lee"

génial !!!
The Peel Sessions original from '78, and the Shepperton live version from 1980 had a chopping distorted guitar intro.
Classic! They were the first punk band and the best!
indeed papa !!
+TheYomanda Yet Malcolm McLaren placed them at number TEN in his tv special on punk bands wtf.
+Kelly14UK What the fuck did McLaren know?
That The Damned were actually a threat to the Pistols : )John Dwyer

Machine Gun
Up there with Sex Pistols and Raw Power. Best punk ever.
EXACTLY!
The Damned imo come very close to The Stooges.
Makes sense, they were inspired by them, especially Brian James.
Only the Damned could write a song about a Bunty comic character and produce a punk classic,
The Capt was a regular reader of Bunty which featured Melody Lee.
Pure
whatta song
Nice !
Yes yes yes!!!!!!! 👊
