  • Ted explores the concepts of jazz-blues through chord choices and progressions. Video Credits: Cesar Pineda 01/24/00
    At first, I decided not to post this lesson due to the extent of the video decay, mostly affecting the audio, hence it has a lot of noise! THEN, I thought it to be a crying shame, not to post it due to its valuable content. I tried noise filters to minimize this noise to no avail. Fortunately for us, the speech and notes are still discernible.
    Part 1 takes us from building the moveable jazz-blues chord ala Kenny Burrell to the blues progression it is used over. Ted’s problematic 1st string on his ’63 Guild T100D influenced him to select inside chord voicings in order to avoid it at first, but later adds those higher voicings to include the 1st string after adjusting his right-hand attack on the strings. Important Note: Ted is tuned down a ½ step from concert pitch.
    Here’s a brief summary:
    1. The first chord sequence ||: Cm7 | F13b9 | Bb | G7+ :|| or ||: ii | V | I | VI :|| , sometimes the II7 can be used, such as C9
    2. “Just bopping around with chords at the department store …”, Ted goes on to analyzing the same progression (4:06)
    3. Focus on fingering on a basic F chord, inside strings, root on the 5th string, 9th fret (7:51). Changes made to the chord: Flat the 7th, then raise the 5th. Ted plays this moveable chord voicing over the blues scale ala Kenny Burrell
    4. String Transfer Concept: Transfer those notes from the inside strings to the higher strings (11:25), which includes the 1st string and continues to play the same chord voicing over the blues scale
    5. Try Systematic Inversions: Straight 7th chords! Ted adds a moving bass to them! (13:05)
    6. “The texture of jazz allows for dialogue”: Single note lines are answered with chord solos (14:03)
    7. Ted compares the approach of Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Lenny Breau, and George Van Eps. ‘Harmonic Unfoldment’ in breaking up the chords as they are played (arpeggios, right hand technique, etc.)
    8. “Here is a typical progression” of all dominant chords ||: I7 | VI7 | II7 | V7 :||
    There it is! Ted describes his Tele sound as not woody, but “round” and organ-like. My thoughts exactly! I just needed to hear him say it! When Ted plays a note, it’s full and sustains like an organ.
    Many of the topics Ted touched on here in this video: Friend chords, the fret board divided into five main areas, systematic inversions, string transfer concept, walking chord blues, modern dominant flavored blues, etc. can all be found at tedgreene.com/

    believe me, if it's Ted, we'll wade out deep into the tape decay and obscure audio artifacts to find the sweet vibrations and ripples that can hold our minds and teach us wonderous things

    "What do we do when we go to skinnier strings to get the same voicing? We elongate string 2 a bit, we make string 2 higher" That's actually a great piece of advice here
