- When is it appropriate to use two Topic Markers (은/는) in a single sentence? I sometimes see people trying to use two of them in the wrong situations, or others who feel it would be completely wrong. Let’s discuss how and when you can use two Topic Markers in a sentence, and how it affects the meaning and feeling of a sentence.
How to use the Topic Marker (은/는): • Topic Marker, Subject ...

I say this always... but Billy explains Korean language better than 90 percent of normal native Korean speakers in Korea♡ I admit it as a Korean teacher😝 Go Billy!!!
Thanks for watching as always :-)
Native speaker are usually worst teachers because they didn't have to learn anything, they only learnt to talk and that's it. But non native speakers need to know how everything works for leaning the language

@@iosusito5683 Haha, right!! Thanks for leaving a comment for me. Hope you have a nice day!:)
Again, I really love your “sign” explanation for the topic marker! It’s such a wondeful way to illustrate what -은/는 does! We all teach it as “as for” here in the US too, and yet students still seem to find it challenging when it comes to real language use. That sign is perfect! 👍🏼
i realize I'm quite randomly asking but does anybody know a good site to watch new tv shows online ?
Lowkey thought you said char-siu (like the pork) instead of the name 철수 (cheolsu) 😂 Think I need to work on my Korean listening skills lol
Gosh, I have to admit of all the videos posted this one is probably one of my favorite ones, the analogy of holding up a flag, really helped make it click on it's function, and now when I listen to people speaking so fast and using it (e.g. on kdrama), I notice it does force their cadence to temporarily pause (sometimes just slightly, but still noticeable) to give that word more emphasis. (Now I picture them holding up a flag on those words too haha).
Aaaah topic and subject marking particles, the nemesis of any Korean language learner
I also agree with CHOI Sisters, first time when I start to teach Korean, I had no idea how to teach 은/는
really amazing video Thank you so much Billy 쌤 :)
I swear every video you post it's really helpful , thank you so much
I love your examples, Billy. Lol.
Sounds like you should have a pizza party today ... but no chicken pizza :)
I really like the short videos on specific questions! My understanding of topic markers is slowly but surely evolving. Thank you!
was just reading about this in your book! Thank you! Are you planning to release more books? I want to buy the whole series😭
Eventually I'll make more books, but right now I'm focusing on finishing my video series this year. I'd like to do another reading book after, and maybe a different grammar book.
Yes! Just the video I needed! Thanks so much for your hard work :D
Thanks! Hope you enjoyed it!
Your books are great Billy
Awesome info
Amazing video and clearly explained!! You even got me to understand how to use the Japanese は for contrast 😂
Thanks!!!!
I've often seen a topic marker added to an extra clause and then also added to a noun in the main clause. For example, 제 생각에는, or, 내 상황에는, followed by a normal independent clause that also has the topic marker. 내 생각에는 한국어는 재미있다. Or something along those lines. I knew about the contrast meaning but I've always been a little confused about the kind of situations I just mentioned where they don't really show contrast to each other.
is "extra clause" just another term for sub clause...?
if yes.. how can I determine what the Main clause and Extra clause are..?
The first time was in an entertainment context, but I never necessarily "learnt" it.
지은 언니: 저는 케이팝에세 방탄소년단 좋아요 하지만 미나는 에이스 좋아해요. I don't know the exact things she said, but I did understand her
Hi Billy. Thanks for your excellent work in all your videos.
After the sentence "저는 피자를 좋아하는데 치킨 피자는 싫어요." is said in a conversation, what is the state of the topic "sign"? In other words, what does the fluent listener expect that the next sentence would be about, assuming it doesn't set a new topic?
After that sentence, the "sign" would still be "chicken pizza." Or it can be assumed to be "me" since that came prior. If the next sentence isn't talking about "chicken pizza" then it's assumed "저는" just like any statement can be assumed as "저는" when there's no other topic mentioned.
I have never heard anything like the last sentence before. I would've something like 저는 피자를 좋아하는데 건강에는 안좋아요
@Billy do you have any feedback on what's better or how it's different?
A simple question, so the contrasting part is what makes the use of the 2 topic markers, i think the key part of this would also be the fact that you used ~는데 (even though, however) on the sentence, right?
Yes, ~는데 by itself contrasts the two sentences, but it doesn't contrast the two topics.
What is being contrasted in the last example sentence about pizza being bad for you?
liking it and it being unhealthy
please do one for when 은/는 appears multiple times, as being another thing besides being topic marker ex. "저는 요즘에는 좋아하는..." something like that ㅎㅎ
The last ~는 you used isn't the Topic Marker, but is just the adjective form of the action verb 좋아하다: ruclips.net/video/1vhQnQRFAdg/видео.html
yes teacher ^^ since adjective is mentioned, I'd also like to request a discussion of use of multiple adjectives to describe a noun (one sentence). is there also adjective hierarchy in Korean? I can't find answers when I googled ^^ i hope you'll notice, thank you@@GoBillyKorean
@@jes4408 I did live lessons about those topics too. Just check the Google doc on my "Community" tab on my channel page, or my "Live Classes" playlist.
@@GoBillyKorean thank you! will check it out!!
It was soo clear explained but I still dont understand the difference and feel stupid now
That's pretty normal. It's a bit of a higher level usage, since you'd first need to be very comfortable using the topic marker already.
@@GoBillyKorean thank you very much. This took a lot of my stress I had right now about understanding this qwq

Unexpected age reveal. Billy is 33 years old
@Whenthestarssettle I don't watch him on twitch or on his live streaming so I don't know him well, sorry hahaha
@Whenthestarssettle oh okay okay. After you said he has a kid. For some reasons, I don't believe he's 33 years old anymore HAHAHAHAHA 죄송합니다
I filmed this video months ago and this week I'm turning 34 :P

나는 나는 개입니다 = I'm a flying dog
Oops lol this doesn't have anything to do with the video; thought this vid was about using 2 는/은 particles like my sentence
The first 는 after 나는 is the Topic Marker, but the second 는 isn't any particle but just the verb 날다 conjugated as an adjective :-P
