Some excellent suggestions. I found myself without my machine a while back (it literally blew up!!) and I needed to find a way to get my sewing fix while I waited to resolve that serious situation. I decided to make an entire garment by hand. To my complete surprise, I absolutely loved it and the blouse I made (a Paddington Blouse) is in constant rotation in my wardrobe, so a win-win solution for me. I have since made an Orchard Dress as a nightie all by hand too - all those thin bias straps were a bit of a nightmare, but I got it done in a fairly short space of time.
Hi Jacquie, thanks for watching and commenting. I’m sorry about your sewing machine and I hope you got it fixed, but I’m really impressed with your hand sewing adventures. It’s funny how adversity makes us try and sometimes love new things.
Yes indeed! It certainly opened my mind to a whole new area of possibilities. The machine tragedy was resolved through a serendipitous visit to an auction by a thoughtful friend who is also a sewing addict - he found a Bernina from the 1990s in excellent condition and got it for the proverbial song. I have always used a 1974 Bernina, so it's both familiar to me and an upgrade.
I made the Folklore Pattern christening gown completely by had (they had pretty good instructions and were very helpful when I had a question) I discovered that I loved it. I just have the buttonholes to do on my second flannel shirt. I'll be looking for a new project soon.
Hi Laura, lovely to see you 😎I like the idea of taking sewing patterns away and cutting them out. I don’t really like moving and driving my machines about. The odd sewcial event is about my limit. I like mine on a sturdy desk resting when I’m away 🤣🤣 I have sometimes taken my crochet hook and made a hat or done a bit of amigurumi . I think the crochet hook travels better 😍😁 I’ve never tried embroidery although I’m often tempted to give it a try
Hi Julie, thanks for commenting! Yes, the sewing pattern thing really works for me so there will be more of that. Crochet is even better than knitting, because it’s much easier to pull out if you’re not concentrating properly! My current problem with my crochet is that I can’t remember what size hook it is done on, and I’m not loving it anyway so I might pull it out and make something else. The embroidery is definitely fun although I’m not looking forward to the bit where I have to separate the strands. I think the kit I’m using isn’t great quality so might buy some DMC threads for the next one.
Great ideas. I used to knit a fair bit but it's definitely been neglected now that I'm sewing. I've just cast on some wool for socks that I can knit while travelling in the next couple of weeks. I also really really want to do embroidery.
Yes, I’m definitely the same. I have two lots of knitting and one lot of crochet on the go! I am enjoying the embroidery, but think that there are a lot fewer designs out there than there are for Crosstitch. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
@@SewVeryLaura I'm interested in trying the embroidery patterns and tutorials by Twig and Tale. Have you seen them? I want to try adding them to garments maybe.
Great suggestions Laura! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Fiona, glad you like them!
Great vlog, some good ideas
Thanks Angela, and lovely to see you online the other night.
Looking forward to catching up properly in early July.
Some great suggestions Laura & an enjoyable vlog x
Thanks so much! 😊It’s amazing what being stuck in a hotel makes you dream up! X

That’s great, Cynthia. I might just have to try hand sewing something. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
