Sewing for Pleasure October 2024! Which fabric could I NOT resist?
Просмотров 28321 день назад
Hello again! Grab a cuppa and join me as I show you what I bought at the Sewing for Pleasure show at the NEC on Friday! I think I was reasonably sensible, though there was one impulse purchase of fabric! I went with the lovely Sam who is @sequingirlie here on RUclips and Instagram, and we also managed to catch up with Sam @SewLetsSparklewithSam during the day. Everything I mention in the vlog i...
My Bomber Jacket of Dreams and some real bargain buys!
Просмотров 22221 день назад
Hi everyone! It's been a good week in the sewing room! I finally finished my bomber jacket of dreams, and I’ve also stopped procrastinating about using my Cricut Maker 3 as I’ve used it to finish off a plain black t-shirt, and I’m really happy with the results. I’ve also got some sewing bargains to show you - some intentional, and one I found by accident in a local shop. So grab that cuppa and ...

My final make for the Busy Bees Challenge 2024! I love it, but it's not for me!!

I’m back today to show you my make for the final #busybeeschallenge2024, which was something to wear on a Mediterranean beach holiday. I chose to make shorts for my husband which have been planned since I got the fabric, but I've never made time to sew them so this challenge was a good incentive to get them made. I used McCalls M7987: thefoldline.com/product/mccalls-mens-shorts-and-trousers-m79...

Busy Bee Sewing Challenge 2 Reveal: How did I get on?
Просмотров 5702 месяца назад
Find out how I got on with the second Busy Bee challenge in #BusyBeesSewingChallenge24. I chose to transform a thrifted jacket into a tote bag using the free Ethel tote bag pattern by Swoon. I think upcycling is really important, and a real skill, but I was nervous about this challenge. However, I loved the look of the jacket I found in my local charity shop, and thought it had the potential to...

Let's Make a Jacket! Part 2 of my collaboration with Jess from So What If I Sew: the Reveal
Thank you for a great video and brilliant ideas. I do love capsule wardrobe ideas ❤
Great idea to create a whole capsule collection out of cotton! Just shows how versatile it is. Thanks so much for joining the vlog tour Laura!
Lovely ideas. Hope your mum's ok. I was sitting in my mum's conservatory today, also in my boots to keep warm!!!
Great take on the challenge Laura & some good suggestions 😍
It was lovely to see you. Enjoying seeing what guy purchased after I set off into Birmingham xx
very interesting, so easy to lose enthusiasm or get nervous about a project, really useful to think about why. I have a few WIPs. I think I have learnt I have a short attention span and get caught up in all the new shiny things. Whilst I think I am being more efficient cutting out a number of things at once, I am actually better cutting and sewing one thing at a time and actually finishing things.
Hi Laura, I went to the show yesterday and had a lovely day. I also purchased the firework fabric from Roy’s material world and the made to be subtle labels. I felt the show wasn’t as big as the March one
Looks like you had a lovely day Laura 🥰
I love living in Northumberland but it's so far from anywhere. I'm about 50 miles from the Scottish border. Travel is so expensive and the trains very unreliable too. One day, maybe, I'll get to the Harrogate show...
Congratulations on your thousand subscribers, Laura, and well done for finishing the bomber. Love the fabric!
I'd love to hear from you in the comments below! Do please let me know what you'd like to see more of on my channel - sewalongs, pattern reviews, anything else! Thank you Victoria xxx
I very much enjoyed your piece on procrastination. This is my first time to see your videos. I could identify completely with all of the reasons you gave. I have fabrics in my stash, which is not huge, that were bought as far back as 15 years ago maybe longer. Some don't appeal to me as much anymore, or I no longer have enough fabric for my more mature figure. However in the last 3 months I made a denim style jacket which fits me well and I got compliments every time I wore it and that has spurred me on greatly. I made a note of some of the patterns you mentioned that are really lovely especially B6388. I need to check if they are still available. I have subscribed so I hope you reach your 1000 target very soon. I'm now going to check out some of your other blogs.
PS I'm not sure what I have to do to have a user name instead of a series of numbers. Kathleen
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing! Where possible I’ve linked to the patterns in the description. The Butterick is definitely still available. I made a denim jacket recently - they are such a labour of love, aren’t they, so it’s great when someone notices how nice it is. I wore mine today. I think you might need just to set up an account to get a name. It’s free and it doesn’t commit you to vlogging! I have a second channel which I use to watch and comment on non-craft related videos.
Thanks for sharing your wips, and reasons. I get to the fiddly bits and get distracted by the next project. Or if it isn't finished in time for Christmas or birthdays, I get upset about it and the project just never gets finished. I am hoping the #finishthatwip2024 challenge this month helps me get the ones on the top of the sewing table FINISHED.
Thank you! Yes, the fiddly bits can be off putting. I’ve learned with birthday and Christmas gifts never to aim for the actual day, which sounds dreadful but I think I would stress too much if I put myself under that pressure. I’m definitely making an effort to progress my various projects - having put them out there on RUclips, it’s an incentive to get on with them! I hope you manage to complete some of yours too, but don’t put yourself under too much pressure!

Hello Laura. I'm here stopping by for a few minutes! Have a blessed evening.
Hi Zelda! Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope all is well with you!
Re the stripy dress. I think bamboo would be way too drapey. Maybe a drapey Ponte would be good? One with a high viscose content. Re lumps and bumps. I find making a stretch lining that I attach at the neck and armholes really smooths me out! Lovely pattern. Oh and I have ordered the Butterick tunic dress pattern after spotting it in this vlog - so thank you!
I think you are right about the bamboo. Drapey Ponte sounds much better. I hadn’t thought about a lining but I do have some shapewear that would have the same effect. Thanks so much for the advice. I can definitely recommend the Butterick pattern.
Totally with you on the bag making intimidation! Maybe we need an overcoming procrastination sewing day!
We do!! Glad it’s not just me!
A really interesting vlog - thank you! I tend to procrastinate all the time and I think the biggest thing is fear. But I am getting better by dividing a project into small chunks so I set mini goals - like re-threading the machines, cutting out and so on. It stops me from feeling overwhelmed by the project. All your reasons for procrastinating are totally understandable and I think your bag is going to be amazing.❤
Thank you. I agree about setting mini-goals too. Even if I’m not procrastinating, it helps me to keep things moving even if I’m too tired to actually sew, I can still do something useful.
xXX👍👍👍
Thank you, Victoria xxx
Great idea to do a procrastination vlog!😂 I think we all have them and never think about “the why” and whether it is worth pushing forward with it! I think Season and weather changes play a big part for me, as once it is no longer blazing hot out, all my sleeveless ideas go out the window, lol! You have some great projects going and we’re all waiting to see these later on! ❤❤
It’s so true, isn’t it? I think sometimes I neglect to use a fabric because I buy it with a project in mind, then go off the pattern and forget about the fabric, or vice versa. It’s as if they are still linked together in my head at some level, so nothing gets done with either of them. And yes, now these are “out there” I will hopefully get on with them!
With the bag, you could always make a summer one up first, in not overly pricey fabric, in order to do a 'test run' and get the confidence to sew up the faux leather.
I’m off to the Sewing for Pleasure show at the NEC next week so might see if I can pick something up, but I suspect I just need to be brave!!
I'd be interested to see how that bias binder works if you have time please? It would be good to see how easy it really is to use! I tend to struggle with everything which is even slightly mechanical 😂😊
I'll definitely do a vlog about it! It’s still in its box at the minute, but I need to be brave and get it out!
Those shorts are fantastic 🎉 and so beautifully made. Ive really enjoyed all your Busy Bees makes and have subscribed ❤
Thank you so much! It’s lovely to have your support!

Very clever to use the clocks fabric! I love those colors for autumn but usually can only find animal prints, which I do not wear at all. So you’ve inspired me to find that fabric for myself! Again, a moderately priced, stable fabric, thank you! 😊😊😊
I love it! It’s so unusual. I hope you manage to find some.
Thanks for the Google lens tip! Sewing is so expensive these days and I’m especially unhappy with the price of fabrics. Trying to make my wardrobe as inexpensively as possible, so thank you very much for your video and tips regarding discounts, too! ❤😊
No problem! Keep an eye out this weekend as some online fabric stores aren’t going to the Knitting and Stitching Show but are doing discounts over the weekend.
The shorts look great Laura & I’m sure will be great for lots of future holidays 🤩
Thanks Claire. Just got to book a holiday now! Xx

Thank you, Victoria xxx
I’d love to see you incorporate heated vinyl onto your make! I think it’s something really different, I also wish more people would show other aspects of their makes, like adding embroidery etc as it’s a fantastic way to make your garments really special. It’s a shame that the different crafts aren’t embraced together more often, I think it is a skill in itself. X
I agree! Watch this space as I definitely want to do more with my Cricut. I have started learning embroidery as I think it would look lovely on a jacket, jeans or even a shirt yoke. Thanks for watching!
Your husband looks lovely in his new shorts!
Thanks Jilly! He does, doesn’t he?!
Your jacket looks great, love the red topstitching
Thanks Angela. I'm really pleased with it!
Looks like a very professional job, Laura. My machine refused to cooperate when I was trying to do buttonholes. I unpicked so many times that eventually the project ended up in the naughty corner. It was only a cushion cover to enter in the village show, so it didn't matter too much and I made a different one but it was so frustrating!
Thanks Liz. I do sometimes think that buttonholes are more of an art than a science. Usually my machine is pretty well-behaved so I'm glad I managed to work out what was wrong!
Well done Laura, it looks fab. I especially love the red topstitching ♥️
Thanks, Claire! Xx
Thanks, Claire! Xx
Well done on your jacket huni. You guys both chose fantastic fabric for this jacket. After seeing it in person your sewing skills were evident. Well done ❤❤
Thank you lovely - and it was fab to catch up with you again too 😘
Great jacket, love the pink topstitching 😍 I do like a denim jacket and have made a couple using Simplicity 8845, I have at least one more of them planned too!
Thanks! The thread is a bit more rust coloured in real life but it sits nicely against the teal. I shall have a look at the Simplicity pattern, thank you. Xx
The jacket looks fabulous,well done💙💙💙
Thank you! 😊
xXX👍👍👍
Thank you Victoria xxx
Your jacket is lovely especially the pink topstitching.
Thank you! It’s a bit more rust coloured in real life but it definitely stands out! I’m wearing it today before the weather goes cold on us!
As someone who plans to sew that pattern up, I am very appreciative of all your comments and ideas. Thanks! Subscribed
You are so welcome! I’m really glad you found my comments helpful and thank you so much for subscribing!
Hi Laura, I just made the Ethel Tote! I'm quite pleased with it even though my lining is a bit saggy. It's helped with my sewjo, which went missing for a while. Thanks for showcasing the pattern.
Hi Liz. My pleasure and I am glad your sewjo is returning. I think it disappears on us all at times.
I love your bag and your use of thr fabric it’s such a shame that the fabric is not colour fast.
Fingers crossed it will be OK when I’ve washed it with a colour catcher. Thanks for watching!
Fab vlog Laura. I haven’t heard of google lens. I’ll give it a go. I love your fabrics. I’ve messaged you on Insta. We have the same plans on one of your fabrics. That made me smile. X
Thanks, Anne. Hope you have been having a good holiday.
Loving the bag transformation Laura and I just got the shorts/trouser pattern on my recent trip to try! See you at the weekend 😀 xx
Thanks, Mandy! Didn’t we have a lovely time? Hopefully my machine will go through the shirts fabric more easily than it did my denim! Xx
Thanks, Mandy! Didn’t we have a lovely time? Hopefully my machine will go through the shirts fabric more easily than it did my denim! Xx
You are very skilled. 🥰
Thanks, Steph! I think I surprised myself with how well it turned out!

Thank you, Victoria xxx
I feel famous :). The bag looks fantastic, hopefully you can set that colour so you can use it often. This bag is my everyday handbag, I customised my internal pockets so that I had a zipper pocket, a wide pocket for documents etc, glasses, and this bag will hold water bottles too. Next time I want to put strap connectors on so that I can replace the strap sometimes, my fabric strap is fraying a bit now after two years of use (it only gets dragged out once a month for visits to shops etc so it's not even heavy use, I need to work on my strap sewing). If you have good pinking shears, that can be a good way to trim the seams AND snip all the curves at the same time. I really like the idea of putting a magnetic closure in it next time, I have seen a youtube tutorial for putting a zip in too, a recessed zipper? Hope you did your transformation challenge in 30 minutes for authenticity :) :). I really enjoy all your videos.
Thank you so much. Glad you like the vlogs! Yes, that’s how I trimmed the seams too!
Great bag😊 I’ve got that pattern but not got around to trying, think I may have to now! Great plans for the next challenge too
It’s a nice pattern, and I think I’ll make it again. Frantic shorts sewing will ensue for the next couple of days! Xx
@@SewVeryLaura I think I’ll be sewing frantically on Monday to finished mine as away for the weekend 🤦♀️
@nicky-Sewandsnip me too!! 😱
Love the shorts material 😍. I'm sure you will be able to cut round the dirty mark. Really looking forward to seeing them ❤
Watch out for the next Busy Bee vlog for an update on the dirty mark fiasco! Thanks for watching!
Your bag is great. It looks so professional, and with all those pockets, it's so useful too. Thank you for showing us that Shank tool/humper jumper. I've just made a bag and really struggled with some of the bulky seams, so I'll have a look at getting one. Thank you 😊
Thanks! Yes, I can highly recommend a hump jumper!!
