Hey there guy! I have always heard about "scalp training", the mystic art of teaching your scalp to not be as oily or greasy. And here is my base line attempt! Yes, I know that there are people who can EASILY go longer than me without washing their hair. This is not a contest. But it is an experiment to see if there is any validity to "scalp training".
Heyy Courney, can you please do a video for high lifted curly girls? Do you know somebody who is high lifted and has curly hair? Can you invited somebody? I would like to hear how problems for damaged hair through hgh lift can be solved with products. Pleeeease do a video like this! Would be sooo helpful!!!
I have mixed feelings. On one hand I sort of scalp trained accidentally. When I started to experiment with fun colours I didn't want to washout out too soon so I started extending naturally. Now I can go 5-7 days fairly easily and longer if I am especially lazy. Does my ai always look good? No but it's not super greasy. However over the last 10 years due to thyroid problems I have had some hair loss and over the last year I have noticed my scalp becoming sore more than itchy. Especially so after it's been up or in a style too long. Sometimes after and especially long period where its very sore i will cleanse (I usually always double cleanse due to a lot of build up) and its doesn't always fix the scalp soreness. This can even happen when I don't refresh or don't use a lot of product. Curly girl and other methods tell us the less we wash the better, but I'm starrting to wonder if it's not just about greasiness but scalp health. Am I contributing to my hair loss even now on medication for thyroid by not washing enough? I am inherently lazy and hate washing my hair and styling it, but I'm thinking every 4-5 days would be better than a week plus. If anyone reads this whole comment then kudos.
I have wavy hair and I wash my hair every 3-4 days because that’s when my scalp gets super itchy. About a month ago, I used, for the first time, some products from Nature’s Little Secret and I was stunned, I didn’t rewash for 7 days and I could’ve kept going because my scalp was not itchy at all. I couldn’t believe it so I used them again and I got the same results. 😳☺️ This is the first time I could go that long without washing my hair. Now I’m in love with Nature’s Little Secret’s products.
Wow, I'll have to try those. I have chronic itchy scalp! I add tea tree oil to my shampoo which helps a lot. It's so hard not to scratch as that damages the scalp, but dang!
Scalp training totally works! About five years ago I was doing a traditional wash-dry-style every day and my hair was turning to straw. It took about 6 weeks, a ton of dry shampoos, and a lot of messy buns... but I was able to start going every 3-4 days regularly and up to a week. I am just a month into my curly journey, so switching to low poo has been another adjustment. I can do 3 days now, but I usually don't want to because I want to try another styling technique!
I have absolutely NO desire to go days and days with out washing my hair. This curly girl will never engage in "scalp training". My scalp is fine just the way it is. If I push it I can go 3 days but I prefer every other day and that works for me. My hair and scalp are very healthy. My hair gets like a rats nest about Day 3 so after that I am done. The longest I have ever gone without washing my hair was probably about 16 or 17 days I guess. The first 8 I was in the hospital after major back surgery. After I came home I had so many incisions and drains I couldn't shower properly. It was nasty and I NEVER want that feeling again. I did that 4 times over the course of 18 months. You learn to appreciate clean hair and a clean body after that.
I washed my hair once a week for about 6 years even though my hair would be oily by day 3. I was really giving it as much time as I thought that it might possibly need to train my scalp to produce less. It never stopped.
My longest time between wash days is 21 days! I use a homemade hair powder with dry cocoa powder, oat flour, and a capsule or 3 of activated charcoal powder. I have mushroom brown hair. I use a former haircolor brush tool to apply it under the top layer (no powdery residue) wherever it's oily. Leave on for a few minutes and then bend over and shake through the hair and distribute on the scalp. That starts on day 3 for me. As far as oiliness goes you need to do several things to make it through a week or more. Below is a 7 day routine not washing. Day 1 fresh clean hair, shiny curls and waves Day 2 Take hair down from light twists for my night time protective style and let hang for a few minutes. Separate the curls and curl clumps. Shake roots. Plenty of volume, shine and curls. Twist curls lightly to regain their shape and clump structure as needed. Day 3 Same method but start to use some dry oil or other oil to smooth. I use either Kendi dry oil or Ojon oil. Emulsify between your palms and fingers. Gently pass over the head smoothing down frizz and fly away hairs. Then take the fingers and smooth and wrap curls gently to smooth and reform them. Notice I do this refresh with no water! Day 4 A tiny bit more dry shampoo on the back of the crown, by the ears and the front of the crown if necessary. Continue to pin up loose twists each night and wear a silk bonnet to try and keep some smoothness and curls. At night I may brush my hair in the direction it curls to detangle it before I pin it up in the loose twists (only about 5 big twists) This also spreads any dry shampoo to the mid-shaft where it can get oily. Day 5 Shake my loose twists out and re-shape my curls. If it's not too bad just use a little dry oil. If it's gone straight in front at all, concoct a watered down version of styling lotion and water. Spray on the straight areas and twist and scrunch and let dry. Day 6 Brush with a boar bristle brush in the morning to bring oil down from the scalp to the mids and ends. Brush in the direction of the curls and reform them as best you can. My hair will look more wavy but super voluminous because of the dry shampoo treatments. With my cut it looks like a Farah Fawcett hair style with loose waves curling back from the face. Day 7 Brush the hair and scalp with a soft boar bristle brush in the direction of the curl pattern. Scrunch dry hair and check to see if you need to wash or can go another day. I usually wash on day 6 or 7. I can go longer but I don't think it's great for the scalp to have dry shampoo on it for more than 7 days unless I'm in a place where I can't wash. I am not trying to have perfect curls or waves every day but to keep my look as smooth but curly/wavy and as voluminous as possible. I like my hair in all stages of my curls only washing when I think I'm too oily or I'm too dry. I get both which is why on some days during the week I use oil to refresh and I brush gently to try to use my scalp oil to keep my hair from getting too dry which can look as bad as it being too oily. I do not follow the curly girl method slavishly. I do what works for my hair texture and curl pattern.
Hi Courtney! I’m also oily, and I have found it TREMENDOUSLY helpful to apply dry shampoo to my roots while my hair is still clean (usually before bed on wash day). It’s like a preemptive strike. For refresh I also have the best results if I do a light mist of water, then gently apply a few pea-sized dollops of Kinky Curly Curling Custard emulsified with water using glazing/praying hands, then scrunch in mousse and diffuse. I find that if my hair is only very slightly damp, it drinks up the product better, and I actually get better definition this way than I do on wash day. Thanks for all the videos!
Thanks for this video Courtney! I've only started the CGM about six weeks ago, but about 6 years ago I stopped washing my hair everyday as it was greasy all the time (viscious cycle!) however, six years later my hair gets greasy almost next day, maybe the day after so it's definitely not true if you have naturally oily skin like we both do! :)
Me too! My hair was never even slightly oily and after eliminating sulfates, silcones etc, my hair is oily almost immediately after I wash it! I found that when I used a silicone and alcohol free shampoo my hair was far better all around but it had sulfates. It's very frustrating
I'm about 6 months in and at first it was like that too, but by now I could even get away with a week of not washing my hair but at the same time the lengths don't dry out as much as they used to. And the first 4 days my hair looks great. BUT in the first 3 months I was frustrated because I needed to wash my hair at least every 2-3 days and I had a lot of bad hairdays.
I’m “guilty” of using a sulfate shampoo one in a while..it’s the only way to get rid of products build up on my scalp! Maybe I should just be more patient..but I can’t really stand that itchiness on my scalp😩
@@simonettasaccon3262 this is exactly my issue! I can't deal with the oils and itchiness! And my curls don't look good without sulfate. It's just a frizzy mess. I never had any issues with greasy hair and now it's just constant
Thankyouuuu this gives me so much perspective, on the 4th day my hair always DESPERATELY needs a wash, mostly even sooner, I always thought I did something wrong, now I know it’s normalllllll
I don’t know if this helps or not, but I’ve always skipped a day between washes if not two. However, for a real refresh I will rinse my hair thoroughly and start my routine from either conditioner or leave in point and move through with slightly less product and go through the entire routine. I have never had great luck with just resetting with a water bottle. Except now with the flairsol and a little of the LUS 3in1 in it. If I have a gel in from day one that is reworkable like Bada Bing or Giovanni LA Gel, just redampening
I did 28 days...no dry shampoo as it gives me itches, i spritzed my scalp with lavender water spray, it calms any itch...(initally it can itch a bit but then totally calms as time progresses ) my hair went gorgeous. My scalp had no dandruff whatsoever. I always had a touch of psorisis and it totally healed. I havent yet but Try clarifying with lemon juice like lorraine says its the best.
SMC it’s in lorraines book..I put 5 drops of pure lavender oil in 500 ml flairosol bottle with pure water. Stops any fungal and nasties growing and your hair smells great too.
Great topic to do a video on, it's nice to see the struggles other people go through, especially since your hair is healthier than mine & always looks great! Before starting my journey, I would wash my hair every other day, always had dry, itchy scalp then it would get oily from conditioners & products. I feel i get the best washdays, have much less scalp irritation & hair doesn't get oily when i use Jessicurl! I've also been able to go 4-5 days between washes when using Jessicurl rocking ringlets & spiralicious.
Go gradually, just start with extending it by one day of whatever you regularly for a few weeks then add another. That's what I did and now I wash it every 5-7 days depending on my social schedule for the week lol But also who cares if you don't follow the curly girl rules exactly, if washing whenever you want works for you then just do that. I extended my wash schedule because I am a grad student and just literally don't have the time to wash my hair every 2 days
As someone with exceptionally dry skin, I wish my skin produced oil. Lots of layers of hydrating toner, serum, lotion, and cream as well as gentle chemical exfoliants to keep it comfortable and soft.
Love your videos! For scalp training, maybe check out the water-only washing method, which involves rinsing your hair every couple days, and scritching and preening daily. I have fine hair and thought it was impossible to train, but I went from shampooing every 2 days, to every week or two.
When I'm trying to extend my washdays, I mark on the calendar when I washed and when I expect to wash for the whole month. It helps me to stick to the schedule. If I'm not keeping track, I'll get frustrated faster. Also braids help. You can always pat them to keep from scratching itchy spots.
Since we're in quarantine id recommend for scalp training to not use any product at all. Product buildup can also irritate the scalp so it might be worth a shot to just wash and then do nothing for a few days
I have seborrheic dermatitis. I have 2a-3b hair. I use coal tar shampoo and leave on 15 minutes, rinse, and start my CG products routine. Using coal tar shampoo once weekly has greatly reduced my scalp itchiness and doesn't effect the way my hair responds to other CG products. Certainly worth a try. I usually buy mine from Dollar General and not expensive. Oh, I enjoy your videos and am subscribed! Hope it helps you! Kathleen Joyner
Yes! I would love to see you continue this series! I am OILY as well! During this quarantine, I have been attempting to train my hair. I have only been washing once a week! Truthfully, I do think it's helping! However, I'm definitely still oily on day 2 or 3. But progress! Also, I would love to see you try out the new Billie Floof Dry Shampoo! As far as I can tell, it's curly girl approved!
Before I started CGM I used typical shampoo and conditioner that contained sulphates and silicones and I’d have to wash my hair everyday because it would get so oily. (I had a lot of buildup and possibly excessive sebum on my scalp, itchiness and a little rash on the back of my head). Now (since starting the CGM) I can go 3-4 days without washing my hair with shampoo, I’ll usually just use water in the shower on my scalp. I do a clarifying wash once every 1-2 weeks, and use a gentle shampoo in between, and on the other days just use water to clean my scalp. Now I don’t have a lot of buildup or scalp issues.
I'm on day 3 right now and I will most definitely wash tomorrow. I wash Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday. I like this pattern I'm in right now and so does my hair - I get irritated when something throws it off!!
As a fellow greasy girl I can only make it a few days. I have only been cowashing and an every other week clarifying wash, waiting for some lowpoo to be delivered, I have noticed I have an itchy scalp more often than I use too. Can’t wait to see if this works for you!!
I shampoo every 4-6 weeks. I coz wash every 2-3 weeks. I'm disabled, and my hair doesn't get greasy or smelly. I only go CG the first 4-5 days....after that it does in a bun. I can't physically or affordably wash more than that.
I can't wait a whole week to wash my hair because my scalp gets dry and itchy if I don't wash it every 4 days. This time of year is really bad on my scalp too!
Hmmm this is an interesting topic. I have dry hair and scalp and prefer to wash my hair about every 3-4 days. However, I have actually gone about 2 weeks without washing. I was very sick with a nasty stomach flu at the time, couldn't get out of bed and washing my hair was just too much effort :( I noticed that while my hair was dry and frizzy, my scalp was ok and not too itchy. My hair didn't smell or anything either. This was during the winter and I wasn't sweating/had no kind of fever either, so I think that helped. I find if I exercise or sweat, I definitely need to wash my hair more often. Like I said, it's a very interesting idea to try and train your hair, and it certainly suits quarantine life more than regular work life! So maybe if you didn't work out it could last longer? Also maybe try not using any styling product in your hair?
Hey, Courtney ! I have seen all of your videos BREATHLESS! 😁😂 Since I’ve started following your tips, I’ve seen such an improvement in my hair (2b/2c curls)😍 From now on I won’t lose any video of yours😊keep going and stay safe😘💕❤️
oil training worked for me!! my hair was so greasy that oil was already there right after i washed it, even as it was drying (at that point i was washed my hair every day). wanting to see if this scalp training would work, i began only washing my hair every four days. eventually my scalp produced less oil so that i can now go 5 or 6 days without washing my hair! i don't begin to see any grease until day 3 or 4. i think was overcleansing my hair like crazy and stripping it of its natural oils, so my scalp produced SO MUCH oil to compensate. when i washed less, my scalp began to "trust me" and produce less oil, as i wasn't stripping my hair. but i never dealt with an itchy scalp, just so much grease. it definitely worked for me, but if your scalp is itchy and angry, i say give your scalp what it wants and wash it! haha. hats and dry shampoo are your best friend when oil training. and what a better time to oil train when we're all indoors and not allowed to hangout with anyone?? #quarantineperks, oiltrain
I've noticed that with my 2A/2B hair that if I go more than two days without washing my hair will be so oily that it looks gelled. So now I will wash once every 3 days or so and I'll still condition detangle and use leave in every day. (I'm still learning, but so far this is working great. Thinking about adding an oil and a cream for more hydration and staying power. I have a lot of hair, normal thickness of the strands like a cotton thread, and low porosity hair with dry ends)
The longest I can go is four days. And that is only in the winter at best. I have psoriasis and after two days I will just claw my scalp up without a wash in the summer. You are very brave to try this with your scalp. But I guess we all have to try it once.
Ha ha! You are so funny Courtney! I did scalp training a couple years ago, I didn't know it was a "thing" or had a name back then. This was before I even heard of CG. I went from daily washing, blow drying and curling iron use and stretched it out one day at a time until I got it down to washing twice a week. It was pretty nasty for a while (about a month) and I have coarse thick hair and have never had a problem with being oily. I'm on month seven of CGM, modified version. I usually wash on day three or four, today is day three and I already refreshed and my scalp is telling me I should have washed! It will have to wait 'til tomorrow. In the meantime I will sneak in a few scratching sessions when no one is looking, I will pretend I'm fluffing.
I'm SO glad you made this video. I thought I was a weirdo because I can't make it longer than 3 or 4 days before I have to wash. I've been in "bun-mode" a lot during this quarantine situation which is the only reason I can make it to day four if I have to. Thank you!
I went 2 years of not washing my hair. I used vinegar, eggs and clay. I recently started using shampoo again and my hair doesn't like it. And my head itches. I'm going back to NO POO!
I could go about 10 days and have it look fine. I get DRIER as days go on. I need to exfoliate the skin off my scalp and add moisture and lock it in. About 4-5 days is usually best for me.
Several years ago I "trained" my oily scalp to go longer between washes. I used to wash every other day. But gradually over several months I was able to stretch it out to where I was having 4 or 5 days between washes. And it did get a little less oily over time. But guess what? I developed folliculitis. I had tiny, intensely itchy bumps all over my head. And sometimes if I accidentally scratched them they would bleed. Then I would have scabs. This led to a ton of hair loss because my pores/follicles were clogged with oil and hair products. Sadly, some people (me) just need to wash a little more frequently than others. I can't cowash much either because no matter how long or how well I scrub I can't get my follicles clean enough. Using low poo is a must and I usually don't go more than 2-3 days between wash days. My hair did eventually grow back once I accepted that I can't follow the CG method 100%. And I'm okay with that.
Scalp training worked really well for me when I started curly girl. My hair used to get somewhat greasy on day 2 or day 3. When I started curly girl I just started washing every 4 days and I could honestly probably even go longer and my scalp is just fine
I will join you in this challenge! Refreshing is a struggle for me, but I want to go longer between wash days. Especially since I just dyed my hair purple and I want it to stay! I might have to get that dry shampoo though...
"Have you ever wondered...?" - Yep, one week in my experience, but I wash every 4 days on average. My scalp is a bit on the dry side. If I always wear my hair braided/in a bun, I can go a few days longer without washing it, because I touch it much less and it doesn't collect as much sand and dust outside. When I had a pixie cut, I had to wash my hair every day, but it was because I used to use wax on it. With a short bob, every other day. P.S. Since I started the curly girl method 3-4 months ago, my hair became slightly less oily. Before, my hair roots would start to get greasy by day 4, now it's normally day 5. So I guess all the co-washing and mild sulfate-free shampoos really pay off!
So I'm sorta surprised by this. when i started, i had to wash every other day and now i can go 3 or 4 - i'm currently washing my hair tuesday evening and saturday morning. But day 2 i often dont refresh at all. Day 3 I smooth some water and spray some gel-water-mix and scrunch and maybe diffuse a little, and day 4 i usually do some mousse and water and diffuse. and i finger detangle a LITTLE but . . brushing? there's no way you can get a decent refresh if you brush your hair!
I tried to train my hair for 8 weeks only washing once a week (I usually wash every 2-3 days). Even after 8 weeks I couldn’t even get a half day of extra wash free days. All I ended up with was a painful inflamed scalp, a load of dandruff that took me a while to get rid of and a fair amount of hair loss! Some people are just not equipped to not wash their hair :)
Stop using shampoo, use fullers earth or other home made shampoos to clean your hair, make sure you are getting Adequeate amount of sleep, plus the region you live in also determines how your scalps gonna be, for example if you live in colder regions, your hair will be mostly dry and won't be oily even after weeks even you have oily hair, if you live in hot humid region, then your will get oily faster compared to colder regions......... The thing is that people didn't have many hair problems that we face before products like shampoo and other things came into market, so you should get an idea how damaging these products are, and make sure to eat less junk food..... Best thing is go to a good doctor and get yourself a check up and see what he/she recommends you!
I can only go that many days too! I’ve tried and tried but my scalp just gets itchy. I also love that you had a refresh fail because man, I have refresh fails all the time 😂🙈
I am new to wearing my hair wavy but I was coloring my hair with very easily fading colors for several years before and I got into the habit of only washing with a sulfate free shampoo about once a week purely to save my color. I have been doing that for around 3 years now. My skin/scalp aren't terribly oily and I never got to where I was itchy but over that time, I think I could only get to about day 4 before I start looking oily and by wash day I usually would be wearing it up for a few days. Now I find I need to wash about every 4 days or so mostly to re set my waves. So I am only washing with an actual shampoo once a week still be co wash omce in between and that seems to donme just fine.
My scalp definitely became less oily after starting the CGM. Before, I would wash every day or maybe every other day with sulfate shampoos and blow dry and flat iron my hair. That second day was always oily. Now I can go 5-7 days (I mostly cowash) and my scalp just doesn’t really get oily. My hair just looks bad by then and I get sick of the bun life!
No poo is so much work! CGM is my compromise between convention hair care and no poo. Even people who "never" wash their hair use boar bristle brushes to distribute the oil down the hair shaft to get it off the scalp, and they also rinse with water and use a scalp brush at the absolute minimum. I honestly don't think no poo and CGM can exist together because of all the added products in CGM.
I have come to realize that it definitely doesn't work to not wash your hair for it to stop being greasy because your hair becomes greasy from being striped of it's oils from the shampoos we use so now all I need to do is find a gentle shampoo which is really hard to do
Before cg .when i was using a final wash bar i could go 2 weeks easaly.. now met cg and styling max 2 days day 3 i need to wash because of nasty.. I hate that. I loved how little i needed to wash. Makes me mis my final wash bar so much
Look up green beauty on RUclips, her scoop and spread method is what I do when I go longer than a week without washing! Her hair is very different than mine and yours but it still works really well on all hair types
I am so envious! My skin is so dry and eczema prone. On vacation I can go on and on without shampoo. Due to my job, I have to shower after each shift, and that leaves me like a dry leaf.
Try celery juice for your skin. I've seen people with eczema on the Anthony William Instagram have their eczema completely disappear by drinking celery juice.
I'm super oily also and only go one day between wash days unless it's on the weekends and I'm not working. Today I refreshed for day three and it was very stringy and my hair felt heavy on the top of my head. Which is funny since I have very fine and thin hair.
I have a pre-existing condition and have to wash every day or every other. My seborrhea dermatitis will not allow me to go longer because the oil adds to the condition. I wish! But it is not to be!
I can go a week, I do not like it. My hair becomes limp and lifeless. Some of the articles I read says not to stretch it out for wavy hair. They go on to say that fine wavy hair is so easy to get build. When money it tight I can but like I said I do not like it at all.
In "No Poo" community using dry shampoo counts as a wash, so stretching your washes by using it won't be effective. Because you strip your hair of the sebum and your scalp will feel the need of producing more. :(
Thanks for the video! A few thoughts- have you tried massaging your scalp when your hair is dry? Massaging with oil? (I know, seems counterintuitive but oil helps me with itchiness and doesn’t make my scalp oilier.) Graaaaaaadually increasing time between washings, while playing around with refresh methods? (Wetting hair 80% + adding flaxseed gel with prayer hands and scrunching the toodles out of it and air-drying has helped me!) Accepting that the curls will just look different a few days after washing? And, if all else fails... you are just a person who needs to wash more often 😀
Loved the video! With this stay-at-home time, it is so nice to have a new video. Also love your shirt. That is something I’ve tried to teach my children. Happy is something you can choose, and being grateful is a key component to happy. Thanks Courtney!
Courtney! I'm a long time lurker and this isn't even my main account, lol I'm a greasy wavy-curly (with a problematic scalp) as well and I feel like this experiment might be worth attempting with no products, or just a simple leave-in. In my experience, products often leave me feeling greasier over time if I try to stretch washes. Just some personal anecdotal evidence, YMMV. As far as that refresh, I've found I cannot refresh by adding more (even the littlest amount!) of product to my hair. It ends up feeling gummier and greasier and stringier and just gross. My hair isn't even that fine, so that might just be a low-porosity thing? Who knows! Now's a better time than ever to experiment with your hair while stuck at home haha
HI! Yeah I have attempted this experiment off camera many many times with no product and/or no dry shampoo and/or no refreshing. And the results are the same, roots super gunky and scalp insanely itchy by day 4. *sniff sniff*
Thank you so much for this video... I thought that I was the only one that can really struggle to get until day 3... I have really oily hair and let me tell you, for your day 4, your hair looks fine to me... my day 4 is just insanely greasy, I just can’t go further than maybe 2 or 3 days...
I feel you with the scalp itching. My scalp is pretty dry though so it can go a long time w/o washing lol! I find if I use the cantu txtr tea trea shampoo that it soothes my scalp enough that I can go a long time w/o washing! I think my record is around 10-11 days! what's yalls record of not washing?
What if you used those oil papers to see how oily it is (compared to your face maybe??) each morning or evening or when ever? Just a thought - as a wait to "measure" your oiliness. Also, I get frizzy/flyaways on day 1 wash day because of the weather / WIND in my part of Texas.
I can usually push my hair to five days but I honestly don't do it if Rather wash my hair and do one co wash one low poo. I want to know if training your hair is a thing too
I used to be sooooo oily, like needing to wash every day, every other day at the least. But when I had a baby I just didn’t have time to do my usual hair routine, so I think I accidentally trained my scalp to go longer 😂. My boy is 2 now and I go till day 4-5 before washing. I can only wear it curly the first day though. After that it’s straight up in a pony risk.😐
What if instead of the ramp refresh on day 3, you did a complete wet refresh? By that I mean jump in the shower and soak your entire head, lightly scrub your scalp with the water and the pads of your fingers, use conditioner on your hair and then style and dry as normal. Or would that be cheating?
Hey Courtney! I just want to ask you something. If a hair product (in this case a conditioner ) is made by 92.5% natural ingredients (does not contain silicones, sles, waxes, parabens, drying alcohol etc) and the other ingredients are okay to use , is curly girl approved?
I’ve been trying to scalp train and I just don’t know if it’s possible for how greasy I am! Especially with how much I swear when I workout. I really need to try that dry shampoo that you have though!! Also, since you have said that you have oily skin, what face wash do you use?
I love your videos a lot, Courtney! i find it very helpful. Thank you sooo much :D I really want to know your opinion on the Kinky Curly Knot Today. I saw it your Amazon favorites, but you never talk about it in a video. How does it compare to the Curls Blueberry Bliss, Giovanni and As I Am? Anyone can share their thoughts!
I really really like the KKKT leave in. It is a protein free leave in option! It is a little more moisturizing than the As I Am and is very similar in texture and feel to the Giovanni leave in (but Giovanni has a lot of extracts which makes it "feel" proteiny).
The Kinky Curly Knot Today and Curls Blueberry Bliss leave in are my top two favorite leave ins. Like Courtney mentioned the Curls Blueberry Bliss has protein and the Kinky Curly Knot Today doesn’t. They both are glycerin free 😀 (I love glycerin free products because it’s very humid where I live) and I always get great results from both of them. 😊
Giovanni vs innerscense vs tréluxe? I read that tréluxe products provide moisture protein balance is that true? Innerscence seemed to be on the pricer side though. 😂 And I'm aware that not all of the giovanni products are cg approved. I just started the curly girl method and I want to find a product line that I can try after the transition phase. I like the idea of using just one product line. I am using LUS right now which I am actually liking it but was concerned about the glycerin but don't know if my hair reacts to that or not but I live in Mississippi.
So I find that the Innersence products provide more moisture protein balance in the warmer months (when my hair requires more protein). And Treluxe products provide for protein moisture balance in the colder months (when my hair requires more moisture). Giovanni is lovely because it is so accessible, and as it contains a lot of extracts people feel like they are balanced enough even though they don't contain any hydrolyzed proteins. I hope this helps!
I'm on the journey to discover my natural hair and I didn't use very much product but I feel like I already have oil build up (or maybe it's product build up?) at the back of head already. I just styled it and let it air dry this morning. Anyone have any tips? I watered down the product because I was sure that I have wavy hair and didn't want to put too much on it. Usually it takes my hair two days to start getting oily and three for the back to get as oily as it feels right now....just to give you a bit of background. Please help!
Omg I have super oily skin but my scalp has always been so DRY! It takes about a week for it to get oily. And it's annoying because my hair is also very dry due to lack of oils so I feel like I'm always having to use products to counteract this. I just started the CG method a couple of weeks ago and hoping this will help balance things out!
Hii, I have a question, how can I diffuse my hair without a diffuser? I havent been able to find the diffuser attachment for my blow dryer and I need help! I'm also new to the curly world (2a/2b/2c)!
I saw one who used a fine mesh strainer as a sub for diffuser attachment, might help 😊

Jassy Persaud you can put your hair inside a strainer and blow dry it that way. You can also use a sock at the end of the blow dryer and that’s supposed to help diffuse the air. Honestly I’d try the strainer first
Hey there guy!
Yes I'm trying it as well, I would love to know more of your experiment in the future 🤩
Swavy Curly Courtney I have dry skin, because I’m old 😎but my hair can’t go beyond four days! I’m here for this!
@@christinaobert5664 what if i use sulfates then? Normally i only low poo, but my hair color contains sulfates and i have to high lift my roots.
It's so hard not to scratch as that damages the scalp, but dang!
i don’t get oily i just have such a hard time refreshing and keeping my hair looking decent so i wash/co wash more to reset it 😬😬
Haley Hunzicker this is my life 😅 refreshing never works for me.
Same!! My hair only looks good on the day I wash it, refreshing really doesn't work for me, so I wash it more often to 'reset' it as well ahahah
Same!
I agree. If you’re able to wash it, you shouldn’t torture yourself if it makes you feel nasty
My hairdresser hears curly girl method and instantly thinks dirty.
2 days if I’m going out like school( before lockdown)
3 days if I’m not going out
I washed my hair once a week for about 6 years even though my hair would be oily by day 3. I was really giving it as much time as I thought that it might possibly need to train my scalp to produce less. It never stopped.
Same!
I knew that didn't work I didn't wash my hair for 3 months trying to get it to stop being greasy...it didn't work
My longest time between wash days is 21 days!
Day 1 fresh clean hair, shiny curls and waves
Day 2 Take hair down from light twists for my night time protective style and let hang for a few minutes.
How your roots defy gravity like that in the front, I will never understand 😅
Uuuhhh can’t wait for this one! Since I’ve started the curly method I have to wash my hair every other day.. and I used to wash my hair once a week!
Did you buy this or make it? I’d love to know more. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing!!
SMC it’s in lorraines book..I put 5 drops of pure lavender oil in 500 ml flairosol bottle with pure water. Stops any fungal and nasties growing and your hair smells great too.
Thanks! I will do this.
Oh my goodness, making that right now!! Chronic itchy scalp!
They say that the oilier/ greasier your skin is, the younger-looking you will be throughout your life. 😊
Mariana Biefeld So true. I’m 71 and don’t have as many wrinkles as other people my age have.
As someone with exceptionally dry skin, I wish my skin produced oil. Lots of layers of hydrating toner, serum, lotion, and cream as well as gentle chemical exfoliants to keep it comfortable and soft.
Which is what I tell myself 🤣 super oily skin here.
Product buildup can also irritate the scalp so it might be worth a shot to just wash and then do nothing for a few days
hi i just want to say that i found your channel few days ago becouse i started doing the cgm and you helped me so much!
My hair is drying, I just clarified and put in a hard-hold gel, so I think I'm gonna give this a try and see how long I can go!
Quarantine is helping me because I don't bother it for a week and then I wash it. Boom. 7 day hair! Haha!
I would love to see you try this again!!
I tried no poo for a bit, which is how I found the CGM!
That is aweseome!
I will join you in this challenge! Refreshing is a struggle for me, but I want to go longer between wash days. Especially since I just dyed my hair purple and I want it to stay!
I might have to get that dry shampoo though...
I keep telling friends to watch your videos because i love you so much plus curly girl perks
I believe scalp training is very important. Before I would wash daily now I wash every 4days. Shooting for every 6 days.
I wonder if your (and my) skin and hair is trying to over compensate for dryness by producing more oil. Cause I'm the same way.
I can wash mine once per week, my best days are often day three because it’s less dry but not yet greasy
Makes me mis my final wash bar so much
I love this series idea! Thanks for sharing!
I cleanse twice a week, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Me too.
Look up green beauty on RUclips, her scoop and spread method is what I do when I go longer than a week without washing! Her hair is very different than mine and yours but it still works really well on all hair types
Ok thanks!
On my greasy days I’ve found that taking a bath and massaging my scalp under water REALLY HELPS
I have a pre-existing condition and have to wash every day or every other. My seborrhea dermatitis will not allow me to go longer because the oil adds to the condition. I wish! But it is not to be!
Please keep documenting the 4 day no washes! I am a greasy wavy girl too
I can go a week, I do not like it. My hair becomes limp and lifeless. Some of the articles I read says not to stretch it out for wavy hair. They go on to say that fine wavy hair is so easy to get build. When money it tight I can but like I said I do not like it at all.
Thanks for sharing!! That makes sense!
Courtney! I'm a long time lurker and this isn't even my main account, lol
I'm a greasy wavy-curly (with a problematic scalp) as well and I feel like this experiment might be worth attempting with no products, or just a simple leave-in.
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney Argh! That's lame haha I've always envied my non-greasy curly friends who go a week or more like it's nothing 😭
I’ve tired not washing my hair as often but I just can’t go 2 days with out washing it 3 days if I am not going out.
I basically have 2a
I can usually push my hair to five days but I honestly don't do it if Rather wash my hair and do one co wash one low poo. I want to know if training your hair is a thing too
I find refreshing near my scalp makes my scalp angry sooner
Wondering if that did anything
love your painting in the background.. on your bedpost
Helpful as always, thanks!
I have been wondering that as well!
Where did you get the navy floral top you wore on refresh day? I love it!!
Can you try Castile soap ?
I went four days last week and my hair was far oilier than yours. I'm 55 and I believe I'm destined to wash every other day forever.
Hey Courtney! I just want to ask you something. If a hair product (in this case a conditioner ) is made by 92.5% natural ingredients (does not contain silicones, sles, waxes, parabens, drying alcohol etc) and the other ingredients are okay to use , is curly girl approved?
What about product build up when you go longer between washes?
I’ve been trying to scalp train and I just don’t know if it’s possible for how greasy I am! Especially with how much I swear when I workout. I really need to try that dry shampoo that you have though!!
Also, since you have said that you have oily skin, what face wash do you use?
I love love LOVE your navy floral shirt (from the refreshing section)! Any chance you got that online somewhere? So pretty!
What’s the best shampoo use sulfate free oily hair
Do you still like the formulate hair products? I usually go a week between washes.
I can go about 1 week without washing my hair. I just the CGM 2 weeks ago. How often should I use a deep conditioner?
Swavy Curly Courtney Thank you for answering :3
The Kinky Curly Knot Today and Curls Blueberry Bliss leave in are my top two favorite leave ins. Like Courtney mentioned the Curls Blueberry Bliss has protein and the Kinky Curly Knot Today doesn’t. They both are glycerin free 😀 (I love glycerin free products because it’s very humid where I live) and I always get great results from both of them. 😊
It’s funny that you posted this because I’ve been looking at these types of vids the last couple days lol
Can some pls help me! Does not washing your hair mean not wetting it at all or is it ok to wet it ? Pls let me know I’m very confusing
I have oily hair is bad to wash everyday is that ok to do
I love your T-shirt from day 1 ❤
Giovanni vs innerscense vs tréluxe?
Oh wow! Thank is really interesting!
Scalp training did not work for me :( I tried, but my hair just likes to be washed and that's fine with me.
Honestly I’d try the strainer first
Did you color your hair? It looks darker
