Great points. I'm with you in the PCVR preference. While I'm impressed with what the Quest 2 can do, I really still prefer all the graphics and smoothness capabilities of PC, so I use my Quest 2 with link 90% of the time.
I'm ok with the cable, and also have a better time using it than trying Airlink or Virt. Desktop.

  • @RobertA-hq3vz

I wouldn't be playing anything but PC vr. As long as the Quest 3 can be used with the link cable to play steam based games for PC vr then there isn't really a problem. Many people will still have the VIVE, or the Rift-S (as I do) so upgrading may be a good option at a decent price. If Meta keeps insisting on mobile headset games only then they won't be getting any of my money, and if all gamers feel the same then Meta will get the message sooner or later. I don't understand why developers don't develop their AAA games for flat screen but with VR options. It can't be that hard as we see many VR mods that do just that.

  • @shockruk
    @shockruk Год назад

I really can't see it being a problem. Any game that comes out for standalone is going to have poor graphics. Let the kids and grandparents play it. Serious gamers are still going to want high fidelity graphics and response times and you can't get that without serious hardware.
Pretty sure there are many games that will never be available on console because of the sheer grunt that's needed to run them. How many top end flight simulators are there on console? How many good mil-sims?
Until we can miniaturise a current gen RTX card into something that can be worn, then I really don't think all developers are going to settle for making mediocre games. If a developer is just going for the money, then is their game really worth playing?

Half-life Alyx is a 1 hit wonder, hear its Good but if you can afford all that then buying a Q3 & VR2 aka PSVR2 should easily be able to buy.
Unlike Most whom can't afford a PC or not interested in PC. Thousands vs $1,000 & less.
Most us folks from Atari & Arcade Era 80's-early90's kids are More Grateful just to Experience decent & Great VR like RE8 & etc. VR2 is Fun & Awesomeness = VR is now.
Still don't get why they blame us on PSVR2 channels, platform of our choice.
Same as u chosen a preference, i like my friends Q3. Quest3 mixed reality is sweet.
We wanna have more multiplayer/Co-op to play our VR'S together; plus its better to make bigger player base. Also do u watch GingaVR? Skyrim with ChatGpt. If not check her out, she has PCVR

you can not make pcvr first and then downgrade , because then you need to make sure art and similar stuff run fine, or you will get onward situation, in general i see your point is not like a VR users, but more or less pcvr elitist view, and you need to understand you are like 0.5% of market , in pcvr space 80% of peoples use something like 1650 and in this case standalone will look better, and support needed for pcvr just cost so much , i am dev and i literally will not make pcvr port of my games, not only pcvr do not have features i need, but support cost will not pay for a price i need to sell it

The main problem I have whenever a game doesn't come to PC, VR or otherwise, isn't their graphical fidelity, I couldn't give less of a crap about that. It's thinking about their long term preservation. Unless someone wants to develop a quest 2 and 3 emulator that works with SteamVR (or better, an open source standard that runs VR headsets which doesn't exist yet), you will not get to play Quest games in 20 years the way that I can play literally anything from the early 2000s, console or otherwise. Resident Evil 4 VR, as in the Quest 2 port of the original gamecube one, not the remake, _will_ be lost to time once backwards compatibility for that game becomes deprecated, and they _will_ deprecate it if Meta's attitude about Echo Arena is anything to go by. No modders are going to get into the game's code and patch it to work on the hardware of the future. There will be no fan server emulator projects for beloved quest 2 and 3 only multiplayer games. They'll just be _gone forever._
I get so sad when I think of younger people who are gonna be nostalgic of things coming out today and just simply be unable to play them because they're either a live service game or exclusive to a console that doesn't have an emulator. It sucks, cause I know how much happier I am knowing that older consoles from my childhood are accessible on basically any hardware, even my smartphone.

This is super late though. When the Quest 2 Facebook and other companies pulled all the development funds for developers, then the well for VR HMD development dried up. Then We’re getting Quest games on PC and people don’t want to thousands of dollars to play Quest quality games. Low interest, no games, no hardware, no market.
The transition happened like 4 years ago. Facebook took advantage of the pandemic to move everything to standalone Quest, but I suspect the sales aren’t good post-pandemic. The biggest development problem with PCVR is the lack of interest on the part of the vast majority of PC gamers and the variability of end user hardware makes it impossible for publishers to sell millions of copies and large publishers aren’t having that.
PSVR2 is really the future. It’s where the most identifiable largest group of gamers are, the highest spec large userbase, reliability and uniformity of hardware. Once PSVR2 hits hard for a couple of years and sets a high standard I can see a path for porting to PCVR from there with established publishers/games etc. but the capability gap between mobile graphics VR and PCVR is too great to make it worthwhile for everyone involved.

Whether you agree with it or not, the future of VR is tetherless, full stop. It has to pave its own way and stop relying on PC to brute force the graphical capabilities. On the contrary, by relying on the PC component, you are hindering VR growth. Sure you have a 3090, 90% others don't. Nor do a majority have a PC even remotely capable of VR, let alone crank it up to high enough fidelity where it would be worth it over a standalone.

PC VR guy here. I've been playing on a Valve Index for years now and having a good time, but one of my biggest complaints about PC VR experiences is that I have a small playspace. My pc is set up in my bedroom, which is about 10'x10'. And after you take away the space from that which is required for my PC and the desk it sits on, there isn't a whole lot of space left to walk around and get a quality room-scale VR experience.
However, I do have other areas in my house, in my garage, and in a large tool shed nearby that would provide ample free space to enjoy virtual reality.
So I ask you this: which is more important for a quality VR experience... graphics , or gameplay?
If you answer gameplay, then I am guessing standalone is going to be better for a lot of people like me because VR gameplay gets better when you have a larger playspace, and standalone VR like the Quest 3 would allow me to take my VR gaming into these other areas where I have more space.
So to conclude, I think I might just have to go get a Quest 3.
