      Avid doesn't support the 192s with Pro Tools 11 or 12, or the PCIe cards either. I've heard mixed results for those that try. Ultimately you're just putting off the inevitable.

    I rarely use the term "warm". For me it's usually "vintage flavor" or "vintage sound", as opposed to a more modern, ultra-clean sound. I currently use plug-ins to add "warmth" (warmth... 😄), but I really want a Crane Song HEDD. Those things are awesome! I appreciate videos like this one because they show that you don't have to have mountains of uber-expensive equipment to have a nice, professional studio. It can be discouraging when all you see are studios that are filled with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of outboard gear and vintage mics and you realize that putting together that type of studio is way beyond your reach. Seeing these smaller, but still professional, studios is really encouraging. Thank you, Warren! On a final note, I like to think of myself as being warm, transparent and musical. 😄

    Pleasant surprise in the middle of this video. Today was the first day I tried out the UA pultec EQ on the Apollo twin, and for a final mix down. I swear I set my virtual unit up nearly identical to the way he has his settings. Watching all the RUclips videos, people giving that high end 'air' thing to it. I would call it more of a vocal sizzle. I think it interacts with the 44.1 distortion (gradually getting grainier as you go up in frequency because < 20k is imperfectly produced). The high frequencies are treated much like the effect you get from a aural exciter. The low end is something special, thick & big. If you're going for that radio ready sound you've got to do whatever it takes.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 лет назад

      Hi Tim, wonderful! So glad we were able to help, yes a Pultec does wonderful things to the mix! Have a marvellous time mixing and recording, many thanks Warren

      thanks warren .. I was first inspired two years ? back by the 5 things you need to get started .. So .. I had to wait .. but I have Tascam 24 trk + the Dr-40 hand held .. Rodes nt1a package a sm 58 an old yamaha keys with midi .. new yamaha Mx61 an Ebo epiphone . an 80's re-issue gibson d.c. & a epiphone les paul the cheapest one a Vintage sunburst Casino as keith had in the stones .. Takamine (old not reliable ) a pre owned Tanglewood A korean Squier telecaster . 25 years old bit dodgy .. A yamaha 4trk ( cant get type 2 cassette tapes any more ) two behringer valve pre amps & a yamaha mx10 mixer plus cubase le / ai elements 7 & cubase Artist 9 .. an Me80 roland gtr fx various small powered spkrs some good closed back headphones akg .. but I never mentioned ( don't want to sound like an x factor sob story lol ) but I am partially sighted & I have repeatedly messed up with the cubase .. & can;t get the mx61 to talk to the Daw .. plus I'm partially disabled fractured spine which healed squint .. NHS in North wales .. but I am completely undaunted in spirit .. I have to have everything at waist height even the foot pedal me80 .. & I mostly use this ancient laptop in bed .. no painkillers hence the insomnia etc .. & I plan .. I have a dozen or more songs of my own which back in the day went down well live ( not just pals & family ) London club gigs .. So I will sooner or later get cubase working ( wish I'd gone apple mac & pro tools ) but I've spent most of the last two years dealing with dying collies 15 & 16 .. no transport miles from shops & my wife broke her ankle .. truly it has helped me to keep strong watching you tube stuff & keeping my dream alive .. I don't need to make a living from recording it is only for me so I have that luxury & I don't really need any help .. just keep on at it .. thanks again & please do not think I feel sorry for myself .. I really Do not ..My other passion is Film . & photography & I am also starting a project with years of footage of the forest & my dogs thru the seasons .. plus my own music.. my Heroes Brian Eno Daniel Lanois trevor horn the Band & the Funk Bros booker T & the mgs .. & of course you are an inspiration but being only on Windows no point in downloading pro tool trks .. This December I should be getting pro tools .. But my pension altho is is enuff to get by is not up to big budget .. But I'm sure you will see That I have more than the 5 main things .. & you don't need luck when you make your own destiny .. all the best from Ben the old muso in the Forest .. still not sure about the sideburns lol

    Just incredible what one can gain from your efforts,,, these will live on forever :D

    Warren...another excellent interview/tour. Wish so much of it wasn't so far over my head - the equipment, the names, etc.
    Looking for a more simple interface for my home studio. Seems I've heard you mention the quality of the UA stuff a few times. Arturia has an Audiofuse Studio item finally coming out in Feb., I believe. Plus, the Clarett USB 4 or 8Pre and Audient id44 have my head spinning as well. The vocals will be the most important element in my recordings. Wish I knew more so I could make the right call on the best choice. Will be using Presonus Studio One when I finally gear up. Their interfaces, like the 1824c, supposedly combine well with Studio One but I don't know if the hardware is as good as the others I've mentioned. Also picked up a a Faderport8.
    And thinlines are favs of mine. I have a Squier Pro Tone thinline that's sweet. Pro Tones (I've 2 of the non-thinline Teles as well) are excellent. Underrated. That Gibson must sound "transparent" and "warm." Know what I'm saying?

    Another great video, Warren. Would love a studio tour with Bill Stevenson at the Blasting Room (yeah, the problem is that he's in Colorado). The new Descendents' album tha he produced and recorded is killer. Warren, I love your videos, and especially your tone. As a neophyte, it sure would help, on these studio tours, if you would go into just a little bit more detail explaining what each piece of equipment in the rack is. I'm sure old hands know what it is from the name, or can pick it up from the context, but why not just add the word "compressor" or whatever it is to the title that shows the device name? My first guess on the first two items were that they were power amps, but now I think maybe they are D/A converters, or digital inputs?

    i mix quiet tbh. as soon as i pull it up to hear if it sounds good, all objectivity is lost for me and anything would sound better than the quiet version. but yeh at some point i rest the track and then listen to it randomly in full at fan level and write notes on a notepad

    Hey Warren, 192io's do work with PT12 but the Pro Control will not (PT10 is the last version that Pro Control Will work on) but I'm a big fan and owner of Pro Control too and if you just use PT as a tape machine and dont go overboard with plugins (or use UAD instead like i do along with TDM Accel cards) then its plenty powerful enough.

    Said it before, and I'll say it again: great video, Warren. Great to hear a younger engineer/producer simply saying in essence, he doesn't need all of the outboard gear to do what he does.
    On a different note: have you ever heard of this company called Roswell Pro Audio? They take the concept of modding a cheaper mic to a new level, because they basically do it for ya! I wonder if these mic's are any good because they're being sold at a ridiculously low price (around 300,- for a 47-type mic).

      I don't believe that having OB gear is a "need"... I think that for most guys who are using a hybrid rig, it's more of a "want". LOL. There's a lot of great OB gear that I do love, and that I grew up using in my early years as an engineer, but I don't "need" them anymore. As long as I have a nice front end from which to track through, ( nice mics, nice pre's, nice conversion) I can stay ITB after that. There will always be certain OB pieces that I love, ..but I wouldn't consider them to be "necessities" anymore. That said, if I found a great deal on an 1176, or an LA2, or even a Focusrite Red compressor, I'd love to have them... but those are "wants"... not "must-haves". All kinds of great sounding music can be made staying ITB. While Andrew Scheps has a beautiful front-end with his Neve desk, I'm pretty sure that when it comes to mixing, he's pretty much all ITB these days. ;)

    Hello Warren, just wondering about what digital interface Andrew uses, and does all the hardware run through the patch bay and then to the Digital interface? as well when running through the hardware does he use a noise suppressor before the digital interface? how do you eliminate noise from hardware going in? I know starting with good grounding and quality cords helps quite a bit but i still seem to get hardware humming. Thanks, TommyV

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 лет назад

      Hi Tommy, he uses the Black Lion Modded Avid 192's. Good wiring will really help, I try to avoid using noise suppressors unless absolutely necessary! Have a marvellous time mixing and recording, many thanks Warren

      Produce Like A Pro
      There are a few other spots with muted audio in the video ( i think two more times),but this spot I really wanted to know what you said since i use UAD stuff lol. Don't remember where the others are exactly, think there is one around when you talk about listening loud and low levels. I would have to watch the whole thing again to see which i don't have much time to do. Great quality video as always!

      But seriously though, great interview. I'm right at that age where I frequently catch myself dismissing people as "kids". Andrew may be young, but it seems that he really knows his stuff. An impressive young talent, here's to a long and successful career.

      Truth! TRUTH!!!! Job One: do not screw the gig up :) Know what? That pool of "Older" unemployed players are the ones that screwed up the gig. Most of the time it is not the playing that is the problem. It's how they work with others that is the problem. Be a Pro. No one sends you to a gig you are not ready for unless they fall under rule #2.

    How can somebody not hear what warm and transparent means in the audio world ? There is a reason why no audio terms like this exisits. There fit to good.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 лет назад

      Hi Tom Vom Ton, the issue is when combined! Haha Transparent, meaning reproducing without changing the sound and warm when adding to the sound..so when someone reviews a piece of gear and calls it both..you get where we are going! Sorry if that wasn't clear! Have a marvellous time mixing and recording, many thanks Warren

    • @tomvomton2371
      @tomvomton2371 8 лет назад +1

      I mean i know very, very few terms that are only dedicated to the hearing process. Most are adapeted from other senses. This great success! Because it is more the overall emotional feel/reaction that describes a sound than a over abused commercial phrase. But i agree, in the wrong mouth it is pretty meaningless. So we have to invent some uniqe terms! It´s time. I am pretty sure there are some really nice ideas out there. :-)
      And in the end, isn´t the most beautiful gear the once that combined the impossible....I mean a 1073 is more transparent AND warm than a Behringer ? But i am just teasing, i know your point very well.
      Love your channel since day one, so thank you very much for all the good time.
