100 percent. Im 39 and was married 18 years. Got married at 20.
When I was about four years old my father brought home a giant pile of lumber and, from scratch, built us a swimming pool in the back yard. Once it was set up he ran speakers out to the pool from his stereo so we could have a little music while we splashed around. While in later years we played pop radio out there, early on it was all my dad's music. He played this song often.
Now I'm old and my dad's been gone for many years. But for the rest of my life I will associate this song with summers swimming in that pool, that my father built with his own two hands. R.I.P., Dad, and R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot.
Well said, sir.
Thanks for sharing this special memory. My Uncle Mike put up an above ground pool. This song has always reminded me of him and summertime!
What a beautiful memory.
Music does that to us...
Great history with you there
Listening to the start of the chorus, I'd like to think your dad was playing this to tell everyone they'd better watch out if they try come around the back of the house and start anything, because you were swimming back there.
Rest in peace our Canadian Legend Gordon Lightfoot🌹🙏🏻💎. You were amazing in so many ways, your music will continue to play for eons❤ I love all his music. Still listening in 2024💃🏻🕺🏻💃🏻🕺🏻🔥
Great songwriter and singer!

Who cares if he's Canadian? Gordon's songs traveled around the world. You never hear an American calling Elvis our American Legend.
I'm a man of a different ethnicity who grew up listening to all music from rock to opera.....and I love the stylings of Gordon Lightfoot when I first heard the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald years ago in my high school days I was entranced by other music than my own .you can say he was the slingshot into music other than the usual African American music. I'm thankful for music like this providing diversity in my life. Wonderful music that changed my understanding of well..........other people......and therefore changed my way of living....

@@christophercarey6522 the world is changing.......race lines are slowly fading ...I just don't wanna be left behind to become one of those dinosaurs still not able to go outside their skin!
@@haahnbalghan6556 race lines are far from fading unfortunately. The political elite and their ilk won't let that war ever die. It's too profitable for them. As the world changes so does the strategy of these evil sick fucks. But what remains the same are the core in country wars that always stoke the fires of hate and division. Money, race and religion. Surrounded by their hot topics and keywords to enslave the citizens into a backwards and horrible train of thought. And there are far too many malleable minds in the United States who buy their ideological bullshit like it is the hottest toy for Christmas. Bring back the 70s through the 90s. Race was rarely spoken of, all this hate didn't exist then. Our government is on task to take over how the population thinks and acts. Both parties. Hopefully someone puts a stop to it soon, I can't sleep well as it is knowing what my children and grandchildren will have to bear.
@@TheOtherPinkMeat preach on my brotha from anotha motha.....I feel the same way...and I'm saddened. You're right the powers that be make bank off of the hate they keep stirred up..... Ya know I wasn't born then but I long for the way of the 70s....I wish In my heart of hearts I could of stood at the heart of watt staxx and Woodstock and took in the unity...the beautiful musical stylings of Gordon playing everyone passing a doobie in peace. I was however part of the peaceful part of the 90s and those were great times....instead of finding ways we were different we relished in the ways we were the same and life was good.....I believe music influences how a nation lives...and while there are some beautiful promises like rap mixing with country or pop being married to jazz....there will never ever be a time again where instruments were played ...bands vibed out to 30 minute versions of 5 minute songs. Men were men...women were women and not what the new generations are doing....I can imagine one day I'm fourty now when I'm maybe 70 the stylings 9f Gordon Lightfoot will make a comeback and it will be a revolution in the black community to stop being so self centered as we are and become more open to everyone around us and their ways.....one day hopefully.... Just maybe I can see peace again before I pass away from this world. God bless Gordon and his music...
As long as you identify self by color you’ll never get there! Don’t understand people introducing themselves by the color of skin.
And now the sun goes down on one of North America’s greatest treasure. Rest well, Mr Lightfoot. We may not always have you; but we’ll always have your music.

@Mark-um5hc - Was just reading that Gordon Lightfoot was dating Cathy Smith who was the one who injected John Belushi with the fatal overdose that killed him - the song Sundown was about Cathy Smith - maybe you heard the story before - cheers
Summer 1974, cruising the north Texas back roads with my oldest hippie-chick sister and her boyfriend, a massive thunderstorm hulking on the horizon. I can't hear Lightfoot without that memory coming into my head. I sure miss her. 😥😁

Agreed!!
Not to mention song writing......
Not as underrated as your mother
He is indeed. No other singer/songwriter has touched me as Gordon Lightfoot has. As many do I’m sure, I find the stories of my life in so many of his song. I even look like the guy! The photo on his album “ Endless Wire,” prompted my daughter, about 4 or 5:at the time, to exclaim “Daddy, it’s you!” when we saw the album in a record store. Wish I could play guitar and sing like him!
He didn't record enough songs.

My kids graduated high school in 2004, 2005 and I used to play Lightfoot, Dylan, Eagles and the hard stuff too. Bob Dylan on Gordon Lightfoot: “I always thought that one man, the lone balladeer with the guitar, could blow a whole army off the stage if he knew what he was doing; I’ve seen it happen,” Dylan wrote. “Gordon Lightfoot, every time I hear a song of his, it’s like I wish it would last forever.”

Im not sure why , but it really moves me to tears today at age 47. Haven't seen my wife in near 4 months now. Maybe it's the red wine. But the music really bring it out. Im dying up here. Why are we separated anyway.
Most ppl separate out of disappointment…. Without realizing it, they’ve “loved as long as they possibly could”, not honoring their promises….. sickness & health, richer or poorer etc…. Like suicide, a permanent solution to a temporary problem. God heals hurting hearts & marriages. Don’t give up !

I am sixty three and started listening at age 15 or 16. My memory isn't the same, but my appreciation for Gordon's songwriting/lyricist talents only grows. My opinion, but in the world of songwriting he is the number one poet of the last half of the 20th century. Such as Softly, "Softly she comes, whispers the breeze with her passing; in secret love she is laughing. Softly she comes in the night." Gordon can write and sing a picture better than anyone I have heard. He does it in so many songs.
I can smell a pine forest with a breeze in a full moonlight dusky sky. No exaggeration. He’s a wizard.........a past master of evocative music and lyrics. Trying not to sound corny but.......this song is magic sorry. When Mt. Another time machine in a song takes us back to that wonderful '70s era... You will be missed but never forgotten. Be seeing you later.
50 years later, this still rocks. Cheers

One of my late Sister's favorite artists. Great story teller.
We have just lost Gordon Lightfoot. A fine singer who introduced us to his beautiful voice and great music. Rest in peace, Gordon.
Just heard of his passing........ beautiful music that filled so many good times..... Thanks for the memory.
The sun has gone down for Gordon Lightfoot.... R.I.P.
I remember jumping in the Hudson River in newyork...with my friends to cool off in the summer heat jamming this song with our Am radio .....feeling free....thank you Lightfoot for the awesome memory....oh how the world change ....😔
I was eight when this song came out, sometimes I'd like to go back.
Coming from Vancouver Island...... Gordon was the best, His music has inspired my family and friends and will forevermore...He will be missed!
What a beautiful song.
It's fascinating how so many of these comments are memories, points in time that this song perfectly captures. This song was released a decade before I was born, yet it also reminds me of a time when my life was a bit more unstable, closer to the edge. I came close to the edge a couple of times - a few people go over and don't come back, the rest of us have memories.
if you aint standing on the edge, you're taking up too much space...
There are not many singer/ songwriters that will endure like Gordon! He is missed more than he would have ever known by millions and was a huge part of the soundtrack of my life.
left ohio in 73, arrived in ca 74. didn't know anyone fighting a nervous breakdown at the time, too many drugs, his songs got me through a ton of misery. am 76 now. God Bless Gordon.
One of the greatest have followed him since early sixties and still listen to him.
