I agree 👍! Why is this song not being BLASTED right now? Do people know it exists? I have a vhs with this video recorded at 10 years old. It's a huge part of my upbringing 🙏
It's the record labels and today's youth not feeling records like this these days. They want the sexxy redd type trash. 1987-1990 was the best years for rap in all honesty. After 1992, it took a very dark turn.
It was the Throwback at Noon at a local radio station, and this joint came on. I had completely forgot about this, and I liked it back when it came out.
For anyone wondering, this is the Independent Funk Mix. This remix samples "Impeach the President" (breakbeat) by The Honey Drippers (1973), "Beauty and the Beat" by Salt-N-Pepa (1986) (Drums) and a sample and interpolation of "Funky Sensation" by Gwen McCrae (1981).
"I'm getting ready for the year 2000." I remember, back in '90, when she said that I thought "Damn, 2000 is a long time from now." Now it's almost 2023, and this song is 33 years old. I can't believe how fast time flies. So many memories. I'm glad they put Sybil on this joint. Speaking of Sybil, whatever happened to her? I liked her.
2000s is considered to e old days now 😂. That’s funny. If someone told me back in 2001-2005 that I would’ve been in 2023, I would’ve been like wow 😯. Now we are here. The 2020s.
+Hypestyle yeah but that single "Expressions" spent like 8 weeks at number one on the R&B charts and that really fueled the album. Independent didn't do as well but Do you want me was a top 40 hit as well as Let's Talk about Sex which revived the album like 2 years later and kept it relevant followed by You Showed Me which was another top 40 hit.
Hypestyle actually it was double platinum but at this point urban radio kind of abandoned them after expression did 8 weeks at number 1 on R&B singles chart and independent followed that single but received less play. Do you want me was a top 40 mainstay and Let's talk about sex revived the album followed by 1992 single you showed me. this album stayed relevant for like two years thanks to let's talk about sex. expression was released in late 89 early 90 and you showed me was like 92.
I dont think this track was slept on. It was the first new sing off the Blacks Magic cd. It didnt do ad well because the trio ventured into rb based hip hop. I like the track but other later singles performed better.
This was always one of my favorite Salt N Pepa songs and yet I don't get how it never got more airplay . Especially it was one of the first titled Independent female call outs
@@shannonallaround9490 yup, they complained about this. NYC black radio played the hell out of Expressions but when they dropped this as the second single from the Blacks Magic album they slept on it.
There's nothin' like those good old skool female rappers. Salt-N-Pepa & Spinderella rock'd back in the day, they opened up a lot of doors for so many future female artist today. Thank God for them and many others such as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Monie Love, Roxanne Shante and Yo-Yo!!
I always thought the same thing, but the more interviews from artists I hear recording companies push those with artist with a message to the corner and cram down are the rap we hear today with slackness and rap with no message. I stay positive as an ol school head and try to look at rap as a art form that has to change thru time of decades like a cammelion changes colors. But we will never hear those rap messages like we did in the 70,80 90s. I was literally walking to the store during my work break and this song popped in my mind. Imagine lyrics, like that stain your mind like an ol scar 30 plus yrs ago. Hmmmm
This single came out in late 1990. Sybil sings the hook. She had scored big R&B hits with her back-to-back remakes of Dionne Warwick's "Don't Make Me Over" in Fall 1989 and "Walk on By" in early '90. Salt-N-Pepa were featured on her next single, "Crazy 4 U," a modest hit a few months later. They were her labelmates on Next Plateau.
Just saw Salt N Pepper do this song on the rerun episodes of Showtime at the Apollo on tv. Ahh..the good ol days! This is an underrated song that applies toward today. Also saw Sybil on the episodes too. Didn't know she had other jams. Brings back so many memories.
00:00 to 00:38 is tha shit! How they break it down with an abstract beat before the chorus kicks in. More innovative than anything than Gaga, Minaje or Beyonce have ever released. This is pure architecture. The masterclass in Hip Hop. The variety of instruments keeps building up in the second verse. Fresh, daring, funky, danceable and so so innovative! Listen to it closely and you will understand what I mean. This is everything!
@@ljavery10 my favorite SNP song. This (and Express yourself) They once mentioned those songs were both inspired by Madonna's Like A Prayer era independent anthems.
OMG! I have never seen or heard this before, so this is a total treat for me....and I thought I knew them all, lol. I think those 3 girls are so underrated.
Weird, I had the cassette tape of Black Magic and listened to this song a lot(25+ years ago) - I even remember the lyrics, and this is the first time I'm seeing the video. I lived in Africa so we didn't get international tv channels at that time.
I had Black's Magic on cassette tape when it came out; I was 14 at the time. I worked hard and now own a Rolex just so I can go around saying "Don't flex the Rolex and the sex that I gave ya..." 😂
This is truly one of my favorite albums and songs... and yes I agree this song was definitely under rated...Glad theirstory is finallybeing seen..... love these ladies 4eva..❣❣❣
I definitely do not hate Black men. I love my brothas... forever and always. However, I am a proud Afro-feminist (not misandrist). There isn't anything wrong with a woman being strong and independent. There isn't anything wrong with a woman embracing her sexuality as men have for so long...Some Black men think that Black women are giving up on them, and maybe some are... but there are Black women who LOVE Black men...they simply want to be equal in opportunity and rights and shown some respect.
Salt was a beast with that pen she wrote this and Expression ... great writer
Mr Harris yes she was
Her lyrics were written by others not throwing shade but just stating facts. But her lyrics were nice
@@kevinshell8392 I'm referring to the songs she has written Expression, Independent, Shoop, their entire Brand New album.
@@pmh78able ..... All good SnP got a trunk full of hits! Regardless who wrote the lyrics they take a backseat to no one
@@kevinshell8392 True. She didn't write all of their songs but she wrote some. Pep wrote too. Herby wrote a lot of their earlier hits.
I love the way Salt N Pepa simply led the way, they deserve the same recognition as Madonna.....strong ladies that came long before the gals of today
I agree

I don't think this song got the recognition it truly deserves and they are true fashonistas of the 90s
The push it jackets were ICONIC and I will find a jacket like it one day

Leah are ya'll independent in 2015?

😂
This in my top 3 fave SnP records.....they killed it, but Lord Sybils vocals on this are absolutely stunning. 🙌🏾 Esp on the album version.
This is my # 1!!! ppl think this was a 90s song . Nope played this in 1987 !!
Yasss! They had a video that had Sybil in it singing her verse that they use to play on BET. I can't seem to find it.

STILL the BADDEST WOMEN TRIO IN THE RAP INDUSTRY.........................and STILL GOING! We love you S-N-P!
Salt was fine. She still is. That was my favorite.
We still need to hear uplifting songs like this....build some strength and character!
Pepa was so beautiful!! Why she mess with her face and body 🤦🏾♀️! ❤️ all 3

Sybil sings verse 'My Independent Funk'

Yes, and I love me some Ms. Sybil...
Such beautiful, STRONG women.
a slept on track from Salt & Pepa. The "Black's Magic" LP quietly went platinum but mostly had R&B charting records and limited crossover singles.

This era of hip-hop was characterized by female MC’s who had a message in their music. What happened to the female MC’s?
