As a 54 year old woman, I can assure you that the entire draw to Salt n Pepa at their debut and height for me was the mere fact that they were the only ALL FEMALE GROUP with a LADY DJ name SPINDERELLA! PERIODT
I grew up in the Dom Rep and I had never seen a female DJ until Salt n Pepa appeared in the music scene. Spinderella is part of history and no one can deny it.
She was but the group was signed before spin came in which means her cintact is different & they r a brand already known with out her so spin was a added touch & the record company didnt care for her because salt n pepper is a big name without her but she was a wonderful add but if she was there when they signed i kno it would hav be salt pepper n spin as the groups first name which leans they didnt have to which the brand

Robb Base had DJ EZ Rock, LL Cool J had Cut Creator, UTFO had Mix Master Ice, KRS-ONE had Scott La Rock, Run-DMC had Jam Master Jay...all these groups gave major props to their DJ and treated them as an integral part of the group.
In the 80s and early 90s, it was common practice for a rap group to have a DJ. The DJ produced the beats for the songs and that DJ was part of the group. Look at Naughty By Nature, and Run DMC, and Lords of the Underground, and Gang Starr, and A Tribe Called Quest and many others. I think they are leaving Spindarella out of appearance deal so they only have to split the money in 2, rather than in 3.

Spin was in the background yet fine, feminine, classy, and kept it all together .... See she was the balance. My favorite Salt-N-Peppa songs are 'Tramp', 'Do You Really Want Me', 'Let's Talk About Sex', 'Get Up', most of the other popular themes that got a lot of playing time were overrated to me but when those girls were around, they were like everyone's cousin, you couldn't hate them but you knew they just brought it and nothing but respect all the way around.

I grew up with this group and they need to realise boys like me then were all over spinderella. Her beauty made more boys in love with the group. The fact a lady could DJ that good in those days was another selling point. To me, she was part of the group. Johnny Gill joined New Edition later, they never said he is not part of NE today.
I always thought that the group name was Salt & Pepper and the members were Salt, Pep, and Spin. And the story of why the original Spin left was because Herby was all in her face while dating Salt. It's like their relationship isn't spoken about anymore but he was a huge reason for friction in the group.
Spinderella is and has always been the most beautiful and talented. I met Salt and Peppa in the 90's. They were rude, standoffish, and gave me the impression that they thought they were better than others.

In my opinion, this would be like Run DMC, ousting Jam Master J. Spin was part of their most successful years, no matter how you spin it. It's her legacy, too. I've been a fan since the beginning and don't even remember the other "2" DJs. This power play is about the money. At the height of their career they could afford her being there, but in these latter years, it was easier to pull a trump card & be the bosses to not figure in a 3rd person to split pay. The people booking them weren't saying they only wanted 2. They were saying this is what we're paying ya'll for the show.
This is where groups always mess up. They don't treat all the members as equal partners. There was a scene in the movie about Queen where the group decides that every member gets an equal cut of the money, whether they wrote the songs or played on one track or ten. That's what Salt-N-Pepa needed to do. And there's no excuse for thinking the DJ is not a real part of the group when they had Run-DMC and Jam Master Jay, and Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince as examples. Doesn't matter when she joined. She was clearly an important member and pulled her weight. She had a right to feel slighted by them.

Robb Base had DJ EZ Rock, LL Cool J had Cut Creator, UTFO had Mix Master Ice, KRS-ONE had Scott La Rock, Run-DMC had Jam Master Jay...all these groups gave major props to their DJ and treated them as an integral part of the group.

LL Cool J had Cut Creator and Bobcat (watch the video "I'm Bad"). I'm not so sure about EZ Rock, he was a DJ in training.
In the 80s and early 90s, it was common practice for a rap group to have a DJ. The DJ produced the beats for the songs and that DJ was part of the group. Look at Naughty By Nature, and Run DMC, and Lords of the Underground, and Gang Starr, and A Tribe Called Quest and many others. I think they are leaving Spindarella out of appearance deal so they only have to split the money in 2, rather than in 3.

Spin was in the background yet fine, feminine, classy, and kept it all together .... See she was the balance. My favorite Salt-N-Peppa songs are 'Tramp', 'Do You Really Want Me', 'Let's Talk About Sex', 'Get Up', most of the other popular themes that got a lot of playing time were overrated to me but when those girls were around, they were like everyone's cousin, you couldn't hate them but you knew they just brought it and nothing but respect all the way around.

Because that's what happened. The Showstopper, Tramp, and even Push It were all done before they knew who Deidra Roper was. However, she's been working with them for the majority of their careers. Salt N Pepa can still go on and perform their songs without her. Everybody wants to talk about not being able to rewrite history but, hasn't taken the time to remember how this group was started which is a part of that same history.

I’m very disappointed yes, I agree. She was a DJ, but after looking at all of these videos, she was singing dancing, and every picture with them she deserves to be acknowledged as one of the group members.
I don’t believe for a second that people didn’t want Spin to be part of shows and interviews. We all saw her as part of the group and not just an employee. She wasn’t there to record the first album, but I do believe that adding her contributed to their popularity. I have no interest in listening to them since they fired Spin.

@mzcytin nothing wrong with going solo. Most people who start in groups do put out at least one solo album. But TLC have never dissed each other or said someone wasn't a part of the group. Chili wasn't an original member, but Left Eye and T-Boz never once said she was really part of the group because she wasn't there from the beginning.

The fact a lady could DJ that good in those days was another selling point. To me, she was part of the group. Johnny Gill joined New Edition later, they never said he is not part of NE today.

I always thought that the group name was Salt & Pepper and the members were Salt, Pep, and Spin. And the story of why the original Spin left was because Herby was all in her face while dating Salt. In my opinion, this would be like Run DMC, ousting Jam Master J. Spin was part of their most successful years, no matter how you spin it. It's her legacy, too. I've been a fan since the beginning and don't even remember the other "2" DJs. This power play is about the money. At the height of their career they could afford her being there, but in these latter years, it was easier to pull a trump card & be the bosses to not figure in a 3rd person to split pay. The people booking them weren't saying they only wanted 2. They were saying this is what we're paying ya'll for the show.

This is where groups always mess up. They don't treat all the members as equal partners. There was a scene in the movie about Queen where the group decides that every member gets an equal cut of the money, whether they wrote the songs or played on one track or ten. That's what Salt-N-Pepa needed to do. And there's no excuse for thinking the DJ is not a real part of the group when they had Run-DMC and Jam Master Jay, and Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince as examples. Doesn't matter when she joined. She was clearly an important member and pulled her weight. She had a right to feel slighted by them.
