The voice on this recording is my father, LA poet, John Harris. He died yesterday, 90 years young. I never knew of this recording, just discovered it. The name of the poem he is reading is called "The Gospel According to John". Namaste.

Chris Harris-Smith Sorry for your loss i know how you feel believe me. I have to say this track is an absolute classic of the progressive house genre, featured in the sweet spot of arguably the best dj set of the genre James Holden Balance 005 cd1 a real masterpiece. I agree, the best this mix has ever sounded is on the Holden 2 Disc Set. The unique bassline comes across even more powerfully. And he didn't just turn up the bass either. That whole set is fantastically balanced/produced.

Tbh I much prefer the Balance 019 as I find it to be even more creative and timeless sounding. It's a bit more challenging as it's not as club friendly as it has a more artistic approach to electronic but imo is way more rewarding after multiple listens.

This song takes me back 5 years or so. I used to be on a strict "guitar only" diet, but when I heard this track in a set on the global underground label I was blown away. I thought "there IS intelligence in electronic music" then came James Holden, Nathan Fake, Sasha, Luke Chable etc etc, then I went to raves and outdoor parties, then came the after parties, the chaos and putting University "on hold" then I came to my senses and graduated, it was one hell of a ride xD

I do love this track. It's not singing lyrics, just your normal speech for lyrics. Not only does this make them more understandable, but also adds a sense that you ARE being spoken to. And about what? Finding the meaning of this song is as glorious as listening to it. It's a trippy tune, no doubt. All on top of the fact that the music itself is amazing.

You pick up this working girl,
    who's hooked on smack,
    who hustles and scores.
"That's all I do," she says.
She says, "ten bucks for head, fifteen for half and half."
She says, "three hits a day at thirty-five per."
You say, "that's seven tricks a day at least."
"But," she says, "sometimes I get lucky."
"Once this guy gives me a bill and a half just to eat me.
    Only time I ever came."
You figure you can save her.
    You sell your color TV.
That keeps her off the streets a whole day.
You hock your typewriter for one jolt.
    Then your shotgun, your watch.
A week later, you say, "listen, I'm a little short."
But she says, "no scratch, no snatch."
You say, "look, it is better to give."
"But," she says, "beat off, creep."
One night they spot you on the street in your skivvies,
    trying to sell your shoes.
You tell them who you are,
    but they nail you.
    Then she happens by,
and she says, "Christ, you look fucked."
    She says, "hang tough."
    But you don't say anything.
You just think, what a bum rap for a nice, sensitive guy like me.

I fucking love this song. First heard it back when Prog. House was the king of the dance floor circa 2004/05. Sounds just as great as it did back then.

Oh man! I have wanted to know where that sample came from since this track first came out. I can die a happy man now. Also: One of, if not the greatest Prog tracks of all time!

At my blog I explain the situation. The PQM track has a 1984 performance sampled from a record called "Neighborhood Rhythms".
The performances ~30 years later have differences because artists sometime revise their work.

The credit for these haunting, seedy, human words should go to John Harris, the poet who originally wrote them. Let's give the appropriate person the credit here.

For me, this is a standout track that builds as it descends and the best thing, is it's a journey that takes any moment longer than it should be. Even if you are a purist this is worthy many a visit. And Luke being an Aussie just caps it off for me.
If you like this, check out his remix of Shiloh - Dream on, and also his remix of Gus Gus - David. It's all like a capsule of genre in an instant that came as it past. I'd celebrate more.
