It's okay to paint the background later because she paints the exact color on the white paper at once. I love and respect the way she paints.
The light is beautiful and the geese are so cute and lively. Wonderful work!
I am an oil-pastellist and eyeballing with gouache, too. Watching how you built the painting was a joy. My question: since gouache is a completely opaque paint, why didn't you paint first the background with pond, and then painted the geese on top? With oil pastel this is a common technique: first paint the sky, then the trees/bushes against the sky, and finaly the foreground theme. It is doable only with opaque media. Gouache seems brutally opaque, I love this feature.
Thank you. I do that for two reasons:
1) Even though gouache is considered opaque, in most cases it’s still a bit translucent. The white paper under the geese makes the shadows on them glow. Had I painted the geese on a dark background those shadows would have looked heavier and darker. For the same reason I never paint on a dark paper.
2) When an object is painted over a background color it looks as if it was cut out and glued on top of that background layer. This problem can be resolved by working the background color a bit into the object. When I paint an object first, say a goose, and then the background, the background color kind of hugs the object and they become one. Also I always use the background color to make edges of objects more interesting. When painted this way, all the shapes in the painting become naturally connected and flow one into another, adding some interesting abstract quality to the piece.
@@LenaRivo Thank You very musch for the detailed reply, I absolutely appreciate it. Actually, oil pastel is similar in a sense that it is not completely opaque, either: I should apply a thicker layer on top of a (often fixative sprayed) harder bottom layer to get that 3D effect, which I am after when applying this "themes layered on top". Definitely, Your artwork is fantastic and inspirational even for an oil pastellist, too. BTW, it was your fantastic varnishing video, which brough me to Your channel. I'll keep an eye on what You are doing.
I absolutely love love love all your work. It’s so lit. You must be a modern Rembrandt, with the brighter light and colors. 😊
Thank you so much 😊
Beautiful fresh clean colour

So satisfying to see the paint come off the brush. Beautiful painting!
Grand merci, chère Lena, pour ce moment de plaisir à te voir peindre ❤
Ta façon toujours aussi simple et magique, mais unique sur RUclips 😊
Merci beaucoup! 😊
outstanding and perfect!!
5:55 when you started painting the other part to the water i was amazed at how the water came together after the paint dried! It looked lighter compared to the dried paint next to it, but then it dried *just right*, creating this seamless area of water, Lena you really have gouache down to a science 🥰
so prettyy
So beautiful 😍
Beautiful painting
Lovely to watch. Thank you, I've subscribed. Beautiful lighting on the geese and cleverly done. You make it look so relaxing and effortless.
Love the subjects, the composition and the execution. Simply gorgeous.
Glad you like it, Laura :) Thank you!
Я просто влюблена в Вашу живопись! Невероятно талантливые работы! ❤️
Спасибо большое ☺️ Очень рада это слышать!
Love the video and subscribed then went to look at some other of your videos. None that I saw mentioned the brand. I assumed from the blending medium demo that it's Winsor Newton ? I'm a newbie to gouache and you're an inspiration ! Glad I found your channel.
:) Thank you! I use W&N and Holbein artists gouache, and a couple of colors from the Schmincke Horadam line.
Felicidades Lena! Me encantan tus pinturas.

Lovely❤
Awesome, I want to be there . . .
DUCKS! So cute :D
Awesome! Love everything about it. New to this, haven't yet tried but found a set on sale at Hobby Lobby. Question: Looks like there isn't much maneuvering the paint once down, unlike oil. Tips?
You can paint on top of the already painted layers, or you can lift the paint in the area you don’t like, using a wet brush, and rework that area. Using gouache is much easier that painting with oil, at least that’s how I feel :)
Excelente
