I appreciate you taking so much real time showing this 70 year old grandma your portrait tips. I primarily use watercolor but recently purchased some gauche and watching was so helpful.

Thanks for the gesso explanation - I totally get that now. I do love loose paint sketches - if I'd done this one I might have stopped at the loose stage and maybe done another version fully painted so I'd have the best of both worlds! 😂

Love this way of doing it- I'm trained in drawing and not painting. Drawing is easier for me to handle because it's more forgiving when making mistakes than painting is. I think I'll actually try painting after watching this. Makes the first few tries of painting a little less scary and intimidating for a graphite/pencil heavy artist like myself. Thanks for the inspiration!

This was really helpful to see all of the steps and how you take it real time! I was just curious, it looks like you were using gouache more as watercolor in this painting (I've only just started experimenting with gouache and mostly have used acrylics previously). What was your reasoning for going for gouache here instead of watercolor? And also, is this how you normally use gouache paints instead of more opaque applications? Thanks!

Great video, but why did you choose gouache when you're working with so much water? I'm just beginning to explore the use of gouache over transparent and opaque watercolor. Thanks.
Thank you! I like having the option to layer and build my opacity. I also just how gouache dries sometimes over pencil. Just a personal preference ;)

Shading and putting layers of colour on cheeks is quite a challenge for me especially using just pencils. Getting just the right amount of defined realism highlighted is what I am practicing; it may or may not get easier when I move to a digital tablet.
