People don’t realize that prior to Janet and Madonna, solo female recording artists weren’t really seen as powerhouses in the music industry. They might have a single or two from an album, but they weren’t selling out stadiums and arenas as singular, solo artists. I think Madonna and Janet Jackson definitely made an impact in mainstream dance pop, and helped developed and solidify that genre (after disco). There were also other significant female pop stars at the same time in slightly different genres who were setting new highs: Tina Turner, Pat Benatar, and Stevie Nicks in rock pop; Whitney Houston in adult contemporary and R&B; Kate Bush in alternative pop; Cyndi Lauper and Belinda Carlisle in pop; and more.
