I absolutely love this song! The entire "Grace Under Pressure" album is criminally underrated, IMHO. Red Sector A, The Enemy Within, The Body Electric, Red Lenses... so many great deep cuts!
My favourite Rush album. Red Sector A is so crushing. Subdivisions hit home hard as a teenager.
EDIT: Started to doubt myself and realized Subdivisions is actually on Signals. Seems it's been too long, I'll go listen to some Rush now :)

After Image is 1 of my favourites. Hearing it again after Neil passed away the openingline 'suddenly you were gone...' almost made me tear up.....and that Alex Lifeson break in the middle! So great!
TWO red songs!
This is definitely one of my favs of all time! Such a crunchy, sick, dark, masterful song! It takes you to a dark place but then it lifts you up also -- especially when the chorus starts -- and Geddy's VOICE!!! Geddy totally conquers this vocal part and brings the incredible lyrics up to the sky like no one could! Totally underrated song! Want another "deep cut"? Try "Lock & Key" from Hold Your Fire (1988)!!
Thanks for the Lock and Key mention. One of my absolute favorite deep cuts. I understand why a lot of fan don't like Hold Your Fire, but I wish that song had caught on. The live performance on A Show of Hands video is spot-on.
I love that dark, heavy synth opening and then the way it comes back at the end. Creates such a tense environment. I love RUSH and I love how cinematic their music is

This is one of my many Rush favorites! The lyrics complement the music so Amazingly! Neil's lyrics had a sensibility that are on another level and the amount of times I found myself totally emerged on them, made Rush My ALL TIME FAVORITE BAND!!! I'm glad that I was able to experience Rush live in my lifetime! great reaction!
Rush's musical phrasing is off the charts. Every bit of what they do is intentional and perfect. "Frozen in the fatal climb but the wheels of time just pass you by." Lyrical genius.
Neil rarely wrote songs about relationships. That’s why I like his writing style. Most bands write about love and relationships and banging chics. Rush was always more intellectually stimulating.
Get goosebumps every time I hear the solo. One of my favorites for sure!
My favorite Alex Lifeson solo of all time and that's saying something being that Alex is a master of evocative guitar solos. Crazy how this song and album perfectly captures the dark feeling of hopelessness/divisiveness in America today.
I think it’s probably my favourite too. But it’s a tough call alongside Passage to Bangkok, La Villa Strangiato, Different Strings or Digital Man.

Definitely my favorite from the album too. I have always been much more partial to the 70s Rush albums, but I must admit that Grace Under Pressure has grown on me a lot over the past several years, so I appreciate it a whole more now than I ever did. However, that having been said, not all 80s albums are equal...So, I do not believe that Hold Your Fire will ever grow on me. That one has been just plain awful ever since the day it came out, and is still just as awful today.

Minor technical note: the opening keyboard sounds like it's on the downbeat because it's the only sound we hear, but when the groove kicks in, we realize the keyboard is on the upbeat. Also, the keyboard motif repeats after every chorus except one, when the guitar solo kicks in. Yep, genius.

You’re right about the deep cuts being as good as the hits. Amazing a band can put out 19 albums of top quality stuff without it getting old or repeating. Another excellent deep track today check out is Peaceable Kingdom from Vapor Trails (2002). Cheers!
Talking about Ged playing all he does in songs, and the rest of your commentary just shows why this band is the best one ever put together in the history of the world. What they did in their career was nothing short of amazing, and it's highly doubtful there'll ever be another band like them again
Dude, I love how much you get into these songs. I was lucky enough to see them in concert 4 times in the 80s and 90s, and I wish I could’ve taken you along just to watch your reaction to that. 😂
I think you hit it: Rush just has the ability to make some of us feel better. Even their darker material has an uplifting/optimistic feel about it. This particular song is actually one of my favorites by the band. The solo section here is incredible. In fact, I think this entire album (Grace Under Pressure) has some of Alex's best solos. Also, I believe he played this song in "Drop D" tuning in order to get a heavier feel on the guitar.
Rush's best songs are their deep cuts. I love their radio hits, but their other tunes are really where it's at with Rush.
I remember trying to turn an aquantence onto Rush in the late 70s. At the time their big hits were Fly by Night, Closer to the Heart, Working Man and In the Mood.
When I mentioned Rush, the guy said "like that hey baby song? (In the Mood) No thanks". He wouldn't listen any further and likely to this day has no idea what he missed out on. I think he just liked stuff he could dance to.
Most people who rant about Tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio have no idea how amazing their deep cuts are. Don't get me wrong, those are great songs but they are just the icing on the cake, and the cake is a multi-layer cheese cake of infinite deliciousness.

Genius, This song has no right to be such a jam the way it starts out and the solo has such a great melodic thru-line. Absolutely killer live track. Alex can make his guitar snarl like a menacing mechanical beast echoing through the venue!
The 2 Rush LP's from 1982 and 1984.. Signals and Grace Under Pressure are great Companion pieces, with outstanding tunes on both with that more 80's futuristic sound. Check out "The Weapon" (Live- Grace Under Pressure tour), "The Body Electric", or "Losing It"(Live - Cinema Strangiato).. All excellent!..
Geddy also would often play the taurus bass pedals with his feet. He started that way back on Farewell to Kings, 1977. They wanted to bring in more keyboards to augment their sound, but wanted to make sure that they could play it live in real time. I think it was probably from watching early Genesis perform, that the lightbulb went on in Geddy's head. Genesis would suddenly have Steve, Tony and Mike on acoustic twelve strings
and often Mike or Tony would be playing 'Taurus pedals', which was a bass keyboard meant to be played by the feet which would cover a single octave. Later in the late 70s, they expanded them to cover a greater tonal range. I think it was called the Oberhiem polyphonic. That long, deep enveloped spread that characterized the 'Tom Sawyer' sound is a very good example of the possibilities of the 'Oberhiem sweep'. Much of what became a signature sound for Rush was thanks to the development of keyboard foot pedals the mini-moog and bass pedal technology.
You just named my two favorite bands in high school. The technicality was always a draw for me.
You picked a winner of a deep cut here, my friend. I always loved this song and was blown away when I finally heard them play it live on the 30th anniversary tour (I think that was the first time I heard it). Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows had some of their most creative and interesting uses of sounds in terms of Alex's guitars and Geddy's synth. And well, Neil was just awesome as always. Another deep cut I'd recommend from this era comes from Power Windows and that would be Emotion Detector. Great reaction!
i have rush entire discography and grace under pressure is my favorite rush album. all the chops drummers are playing today, neil was already doing them in the seventies.
This is one of my top Rush songs from my second favorite album of theirs (the first being Power Windows). Like some others have said, check out some later live videos of this song. Alex's guitar tone is frikkin' /brutal/ on them.
This CD got me through some stuff in my teens...really resonated with me. The solo in this song is one of my favorites =)

I’ve never heard love or hate except people don’t always turn on to Geddy’s unique voice, but never heard anyone hate on their greatness.
The whole GRACE UNDER PRESSURE album (the title is based on Ernest Hemingway's definition of courage) struck me as a message in a bottle from the Cold War.
The tracks range from the helplessness in the face of larger dangers, ranging from nuclear war, climatic disaster, or seeing others' impending misfortunes ("Distant Early Warning"), through a recollection of Geddy Lee's mother's life in a concentration camp ("Red Sector A"), to the fragility of our current way of life, and how, bad as it can be, it could be worse ("Between the Wheels", as you displayed quite admirably here.)
There is less of a feeling of "Help us please", than there is of "Meanwhile, we're holding on." Thus, the title.
One of my favorite Rush albums.. and every fan has their own personal interpretation of the LP, and how it relates to them.. the way you break it down is very enlightening and historic in a way.. great perspective.
@@4tuneagent my first listen to the album was just after it had come out... on an April day that was supposed to be warmer and clearer than we actually got. The album cover art was full of disturbing imagery, and the sound fit the bleak weather of the day... and those associations stick with you, as you most likely already know. :)
I firmly believe that Neil wrote these lyrics about the the era between both World Wars. The lost generation after WW1, the Roaring 20's, Prohibition, the rise of automobiles and motion pictures in culture, the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and the events leading up to WW2. He was a fan of the authors of that era. Think of those narratives the next time you listen to this song.
Rush has been my favorite band for over 40 years, and this is one of my top 5! And one of Alex's top 5 solos!!!

Possibly Neil’s best lyrics and Alex’s best solo. Saw them play this on my 40th… not ashamed to say I cried.
I LOVE how RUSH's lyrics apply to today and what's happening in the world.
Thing to notice on those first keyboard chords, he's also playing a moog bass pedal in between those chords with his foot at the same time while singing.
This record came in 1984 ('Grace under pressure') at a time when Geddy Lee was getting into synthesizers, and Neil Peart was also experimenting w/ electronic drums... which left Alex Lifeson (guitar) w/ little to do but crank out some solos.
There are a lot of Rush songs that never got recognition... some that I would suggest - 'Chain Lightning' ... 'Between Sun & Moon' ... 'Peaceable kingdom' ... 'Bravado'... 'The Weapon'... 'Half the world'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
T, I suggest that you checkout some of Rush's heavier sounding stuff from the later period. I think the song "Driven" from the album Test For Echo would be something that's right up your alley.
Agreed - I love introducing Driven to people who fell away from Rush post Moving Pictures.
40 + year fan here. So many people tout Rush in the 70's. This is my absolute favourite Rush album and this is one of my favourite songs. Yes I'm Canadian by the way I spell favourite LOL.
BTW I'm not knocking 70's Rush. I'm a fan of it all of course.
Great tune! The thing I find interesting when Alex does his amazing solos is the frame built by Geddy and Neil that complements but does not interfere. You can hear it on almost every Alex solo. This is one of my fav air band songs; pick an instrument.
I was very impressed when you did "Mission" from "Hold Your Fire" album and this from "Grace Under Pressure " and if you are taking suggestions "Second Nature." From "Hold Your Fire." Album as far as I know no one has reacted to it yet.
People sleep on this little gem of a song by Rush. For me, easily my second favorite next to 'Subdivisions'...everyone has their faves, but those two songs take me back to my exploration of groups like Yes and Pink Floyd back in my teen years of the late 70s - early 80s. A great time to love music, welcome to the club 🙂

Great tune!! I've been a Rush fan since Moving Pictures came out. Initially I put this release on the back burner and when I came back to it years later I thought to myself "WTF dude!! This one kicks ass!"
I would love to see your reaction to Anagram. You've already done several from Presto and for me Anagram is Neil's finest lyrical piece. Make sure you understand what an anagram is before doing this tune, you'll be amazed!

You are so on point. The lesser known songs are just as powerful as their more mainstream stuff. But they were never really mainstream “in the end”.

Check out "Turn The Page", which was released around 1987... its also a deep cut that really takes it to the next level of musical sophistication!
I am a die hard Rush fan. I have been listening to Rush since they came out with Moving Pictures. I was so amazed that I purchased every earlier album and I couldn't get enough. The first concert I went to was Grace Under Pressure in 1984, which features the song you just played. I actually got to see them play this live at the Texas Jam at the Astrodome where Rush headlined and Gary Moore, Bryan Adams, Ozzy Ozbourn and 38 Special opened for them. I was initially not impressed with the sound of Grace Under Pressure because I liked the sound of Moving Pictures and before. However, as time went on, and with repeated listening, I began to appreciate this album more. That's the key to understanding Rush. They are always way ahead of their time.

I was introduced to Rush, quite accidentally in 84, with a "pick of the month" buy by mail subscription that my father forgot to cancel. It was Grace under Pressure. I litterally got through the vinyl with the turntable's needle. It changed my life... As for suggestions, did you react to Beneath, between and behind, Grand design, Territories, The weapon, A passage to Bangkok, Natural science, The camera eye, Countdown, Prime mover, Scars, Animate, Stick it out?
Great reaction!! Kick ass song! A lot of times when you can hear bass and keyboards distinctively at the same time either Geddy or Alex are playing the keys with their feet! Watch the concert version from the Snakes & Arrows tour. Like so many of Rush’s songs, hey are a LOT heavier live. Loved this in ‘84 and it continues to be a deeper favorite.
SUGGESTION for future music reaction : Joe Walsh is a guitarist singer song writer known best for being a member of The eagles and his solo work.
52 years ago ( 1970 ) he released the song Funk #49 ; one of his best renditions is one he did in Dec 2021 : title of Video : Walsh , Ringo & Co - Funk #49
this performance is "near" jaw dropping considoring Walsh is 74 yrs old and Ringo Starr is 81 yrs old in this video

How can 3 guys sound like more? That's the old question with Rush. The secret is foot pedals, for both Alex and Geddy. Alex will play guitar with foot-actuated effects or taurus pedals, and Geddy plays bass, keyboards and also foot pedals (like any pianist), and sings. And Neil had his 100 piece drumset. What's not to understand? Three guys each playing multiple instruments at one time. What do you expect to happen? It's Rush.

Grace Under Pressure is an awesome album. This song has a very moving guitar solo. Although synthesizer heavy, this album has some of Alex's best guitar work in my opinion.
Kid Gloves and Red Lenses are great songs off this album.

Yeah, on some songs with lots of keys, Geddy will play bass on foot pedals while playing keys, then switch to his bass on other parts. Subdivisions is another good example of where he does that.
One of my favorite rush songs. The drum track is explosive, intricate, fast, created by the greatest drum composer in history.
I was just checking your channel and I couldn't believe there is no Yes. They are a fantastic band who were a huge influence on Rush. Geddy inducted them into the RRHOF, and played with them that night.
Songs like Close to the Edge, Relayer and Starship Troopers are incredible pieces of progressive rock. Yes is a bit of an aquired taste, but when you listen to them, after a few songs you start to realize how incredibly talnted they were, and how amazing their music is. I highly recommend you check into them.
Something I always loved about Neil, when the song is slow and dark, he stayed on the lower toms on his fills. As a drummer, this keeps the the dark emotion along with the other instruments. The higher toms to me, project a brighter mood and seem to not fit the tone of the rest of the music.
After Hemispheres this is my favorite Rush album easily. I think I play it more than any other one. Soooo good and Alex is a badarse all over it. Just the Kid Gloves solo alone.
One of the best live show bands ever. You have only seen one liver performance? Love the reactions, but you should check out Rush In Rio (3 hour concert), and report back to your listeners. You will love it and gain even more appreciation for their greatness. Keep up the great work.

Yes! This is one of my favorite songs. I get emotional listening to this, as it is a darker one for sure, but it's Geddy's singing in the last chorus that gets me every time 🥲

Good on you for recognizing the era this was from! I've only recently begun to expand my knowledge of Rush's music beyond what I was hearing on the radio, and even before I could remember what song came from what album, I could easily recognize when I was listening to something from GUP, because the synth arrangements gave these songs a distinctive sound similar to Distant Early Warning, which I had heard several times. Another album whose synth arrangements create a distinctive sound is their subsequent album Power Windows, from which one powerful track is Manhattan Project, whose lyrics highlight the events surrounding the development and deployment of the first atomic bomb; IMO it's well worth a listen.

When I ran out and bought this album after it was first released, I thought, yeah good song. Now?? This song is an absolute masterpiece in all facets!! But what...would we expect anything less??

I don't always hit the like, but when I do hit the like there's a pretty good chance, like maybe 10% or so, that Rush is involved in the video.
Probably, my favorite record, of all time. From beginning to end, absolute perfection. Didn't see it, when it first came out. 10 years later, wow!!! Still love it. Please do "red secter A," next.
