It's my first time watching Neil Peart in years since I was back in College & damn! I wish I paid more attention to what my drum teacher was showing me. But, hey sometimes we are young and dumb which I certainly was. Least we have RUclips and we can get to witness these legends in action!
This was my first time reacting to Neil Peart on this channel and I'm sure there are so many amazing drum solo's but this was the one I chose.
These are just my opinions and thoughts as I'm experiencing this drumming masterclass & I hope you guys enjoy it. If it's not for you then that is okay as well 😊
P.S I was just testing the best ways to upload videos so that there is no copyright infringement and this was the only way I could get it on RUclips.
Hopefully it doesn't effect the video to much as this is not suppose to be a substitute for the original video but just my reaction & thoughts (:
Hope you guys enjoyed the reaction😊If you did please don't forget to smash that like 👍 & Subscribe 📺
    Much Love 💜 Peace ✌ Happiness 😊

I'm sure it must have been. I'll never get to experience that tho 😢 I should do some more rush now that I kind have figured how to upload their videos. I did this over a month ago & forgot about it. Then got an email yesterday saying it cleared copyright. Thought it would have got more views to be honest. But maybe my title not the greatest for clicks. 🤷‍♂️ who knows. Was good fun watching him play regardless 😊
Hope you are doing well that side 🤘

If you're curious, the bit where his feet are in 3 and his hands are doing whatever they feel like at 5:50 is a quote from Max Roach's "The Drum Also Waltzes." Talk about an exercise in limb independence.

Drummers use a Metronome to keep time. A Metronome uses Neil Peart to keep time.
He does this in the middle of a 3-hour concert.

Enjoyed the reaction. Great to see other drummer's reactions -- no-one else can fully appreciate what's going on "under the hood" like we can. I love the 3/4 "waltz". The way he plays all those free-floating drum fills over that "boom-cha-cha" ostinato is a thing of beauty. A master-class in independence.
That stickwork you loved (at 14:35) is called alternating-crossovers or double-crossovers. It's quite famous (I believe it's in the Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer which I can't seem to lay my hands on at this moment).
The basic pattern is just 5-beats, all played as alternating singles (hand-to-hand), with the all-important crossover on the middle stroke (3rd stroke). Being just 5 strokes (an odd number), the leading-hand will obviously alternate with each repetition, as will the crossovers.
Playing it between two drums side-by-side is easy, you simply swap drums every 5 strokes. The "trick" is to remember that if you lead with the right hand, then you should start on the right hand drum, and if you lead with the left, you should start on the left hand drum.
Adding a third drum (as Neil did) means you can start on the snare and go left or right (depending on which hand is leading), but each time you come back to the snare you have to play the pattern twice. It then becomes a 30-stroke pattern, with 15 strokes played to each side.
Alternatively, instead of playing it twice on the snare, try throwing in a double stroke to add one extra beat, or two doubles to add three strokes -- anything to bring it up to an even number of strokes and make it that much easier to move to "the other side".

When Howard Stern persuaded Lars Ulrich to proclaim John Bonham was the G.O.A.T. over Neil Peart, I laughed to myself. I highly respect John Bonham and him being an iconic drummer, but i believe that the world was exposed more to Led Zeppelin and John Bonham than they were to Rush. It would be a totally different outcome on who people thought of as the G.O.A.T. and the fact that there is a big difference between a drummer and a percussionist such as Neil Peart and Stewart Copeland. They are on a totally different level compared to the average drummer!

Saw the same interview, I also laughed. In my opinion Lars said John Bonham because if he didn't he would have gotten ripped. Let's face it, a vote for anything Led Zeppelin is always considered the easy "cool" vote. Not many cared about three Canadian dudes playing their incredible music. So much love on RUclips for Neil and RUSH. Many have spent tens of thousands of dollars duplicating The Professor drum kit in their homes. DW's custom kits for Neil where nothing short of masterpieces. Rare wood used and gold plated all over the place. Nothing but the best FOR the best. RIP Professor.

    1. Thank you for pronouncing "Peart" correctly. It shows your respect. There are a lot of sincere Rush fans who love Neil, but few of them have bothered to learn how to pronounce his last name. (Also sad that nobody got it right during Rush's Hall of Fame induction. Still, Neil took it graciously.)
    2. It's great that you embraced genres outside of metal as you got older. I always loved Rush, but it took me a little while to appreciate a broader range of music. I was always biased towards Judas Priest, Ozzy, Iron Maiden. and so on.
    3. I like that you showed Neil full screen. 😀
    4. Most importantly, as an expert, you were generous with your feedback. People would (should!) pay $ to learn from you.
You're obviously an accomplished drummer, and I appreciate how you stopped often to explain fundamentals (e.g. your paradiddle comment). At first I was annoyed at your interruptions, then I soon realized how much learning you are offering the rest of us, even in a form that is not a drum lesson.
I've watched several reaction videos but none of them taught me anything. They were all about "NEIL IS SO GREAT!". Entertaining, yes. But you've given us a lot of useful information based on experience. I really appreciate that.

I try find a balance for when stopping the performance. I'm captivated by Peart's drumming so I don't really want to stop but sometimes I just have things on my mind that I want to express & sometimes I just need to let it out otherwise it sits in my mind cause I want to remember what I want to say at the end and then I just can't concentrate properly. I also want to try add more to the video by trying to help understand what is being played while also giving my reaction. It's a fine balance sometimes people hate it. Sometimes they don't.
Thank you for the comment. Really appreciate the feedback (:

Listeners mostly think in terms like GOATs, musicians (once out of their beginner phase) not so much. The best of the best drummers have their own voice and style. Bonham & Copeland forged recognizable-to-this-day voices that had not existed before Led Zep or The Popo. It's important not to overlook they both played one bass drum and left a lot of space. Space is a foreign concept to us double bass drummers, we're always busier, more rackety than our one-up one-down cousins. Besides doubling up on bass drums we need to triple the rack toms too. I've always preferred Neil over double bass forerunners Billy Cobham, Cozy Powell, Carl Palmer, Mitch Mitchell & Carmine Appice but I don't know if Peart or any of them had a voice so much as they had a style. Neil forced me to listen to Terry Bozzio after he wrote MD: "Why don't you interview TB, he REALLY knows how to play." Bozzio definitely had a voice---double bass Tamas, snare, seven rototoms & ten Chinatypes cranked so tight between the felts they only emitted white noises---but did he have a style any more than those other double bass guys? One weird thing distanced him from them: showmanship that could overshadow Buddy Rich. I saw everyone I've mentioned at least once, if there ever was a GOAT it was Bozzio. But only in 1982-1983. Regarding Neil, was he better after studying with Gruber, or just different?
