I liked his goofy classic MK jump. Everyone else flips but he just does this lumbering hop. Makes him feel like more of a threat. He may not be as nimble as everyone else but the ground shaking on his landing sells that he has more than enough power to make up for it.
MK11 Shao Kahn is right now in a very good spot. Yes he's complicated to use, but his damage, range, and options are exactly what would you expect from a boss character. So being a boss character that is difficult to use, that is indeed an awesome and rewarding character.
That makes the Kahn vs Kahn (Kotal vs Shao) matchups all the more interesting because, in a way, they're different kinds of bosses. Shao Kahn obliterates health bars and deals the kind of damage that makes newer players sweat. Kotal, meanwhile, is all about reads and buffs, and a runaway Kotal that gets the setups can be absolutely unbeatable.
Competitive History videos on this channel are like coming home to a nice warm bowl of soup, familiar, wholesome, well made and always something that I'm happy to see.

I was actually really sick a couple days ago, same with my sisters. Something has to be floating around. Either that or it's the temperature infrequency
MK11 Shao Khan is probally one of the most fun characters to play, his attacks are brutal, his combos are stylish and with the last patch made him so much more viable
First thing that honestly popped in my head was "HWAT! HAU!" I honestly always liked Shao Kahn in MK11 even well before the final patch, but maybe that's mainly because I always played offline with variations. As an addendum to the Trilogy section, N64 MKT Shao Kahn is far closer to his UMK3 counterpart. He lacks the extra moves but his hammer stuns on hit as it normally would, but he can't spam it like the CPU does, and his charge attacks can stunlock on block. Oh and uh, there's a bit of a risk playing as him in single player. Normally, Reptile's Force Ball is actually disabled while he's in play, but the CPU ignores this limitation. If Shao Kahn gets hit by it without blocking it, the game crashes Oh yeah by the way: there's an exploit in the N64 version that lets you play as Shao Kahn throughout the entirety of the single player mode without being restricted to the certain stages where you can turn into him. Simply do a Two Player match and play on whatever stage Shao Kahn is playable in (Rooftop, Pit 3, Kahn's Kave) and input the transformation code on both rounds, then win and simply let the timer run out. Then choose a ladder and Kahn will be playable for the rest of the game until you lose or win

@@kaihedgie1747 Yeah, I remembered that the Vita version had the extra challenge missions but I couldn't remember what was in them and if they included the Shao, Goro, and Kintaro ones.

I find it odd yet hilarious that he was good in MK vs DC. Then again, the fact he's alright as a character in MK11 is proof anything is possible in the MK universe.
With how ridiculously varied his viability has been in these games, I'm kinda surprised there hasn't been a game where he is both a boss and simultaneously worse than most regular characters. Seems like it would be pretty on brand at this point
He was kinda like that in Armageddon, as he was grouped up sometimes with other boss-like characters (more often than not grouped up with the likes of Goro, Kintaro, and Motaro). As a matter of fact, I remember these specific characters having a unique interaction with blocking that hurts them overall, but vaguely remember what specifically it is. However, he wasn't a "true" boss character like Onaga, Moloch, and Blaze are, who are in the banned tier.
Shao was the reason I pre-ordered mk11. Also the reason I didn't play it long because how weak he was at launch 😔 It's a little late for me now on that game but maybe I'll pick it up again
I know that feeling! I was so, so hyped for 11 and had cemented my mains as Raiden and Shao Kahn. Both were absolutely terrible and still are. I got my platinum and haven't played again since. Well, except to go back for Aftermath to play the story.
Can’t wait for the day that I’m blessed with a 2 hour competitive history of either scorpion or sub-zero. Also keep up the great work guys I’ve been following y’all’s videos for a while now.
Loved the video my dude! I am a Shao Kahn main in MK1 and while it sucks he's not great I still rock with him. Hoping you can do one on Raiden, or Sonya!
Shao Kahn was a beast in Mortal Kombat Trilogy, one of the few characters in that game that can quickly move from the far side of the screen to close range, all while racking damage along the path. He can relentlessly open with a few projectiles, then rapidly tackle or move into his notorious upward knee, then brutally finish you off close range with the emperors shield and a few nasty hammer blows.
Interestingly Kahn was also playable (two player only) in the MS-DOS / PC version of MK3 (the original even, non Ultimate and Trilogy), along with Motaro. You had to add the command-line option of 1000000 when launching, but do not include the dash like most command-line arguments i.e. "mk3 1000000". Their portraits appeared next to the starting characters once player two joined character selection.
With how good both the mk series and the injustice series have been recently it honestly might be a good idea to give the mk vs dc universe game another game
Despite absolutely despising him lore-wise, his play style(besides barakaand shang) is my favorite. His combos/specials feel natural, and despite not being an especially skilled mk11 player, i felt i was improving my online matches with him.
8:06 Yep. In fact, Shao Khan taught Shang Tsung the soul magic stuff. MKvsDC Shao Khan >>>>>>> MK11 Shao Khan Especially in terms of design. Yeah, not a fan of his design in MK11
some insight from a former high level online warrior that mained shao kahn in mk11. the taunts are far from impractical as shao has rather s8imple setups that allow him to get them out absolutely safe. you did forget to mention, that his javelin toss has a special property if hit on high range, as it will result in an extended knockdown. this has 2 applications, 1. the extended knockdown allows him to close the distance, especially usefull as he is able to hit a oki 24d6 wich is the far version of his overhead hammer lunge wich is safe on block and has an inbuild mindgame where the amplified version will clip enemies that insist on taking their turn, and the second use is, that the extended knockdown of a far hitting javelin toss allows you to completely savely use any taunt. it is a bit of a risky move tho, as shao kahn kinda struggles in neutral with any character his main gameplan is centered around fishing for a hit that results in a knockdown and then he keeps üplaying the oki game. shao kahn can instead of going for his close knockdowns that allow him to set up his actual gameplan send his opponent fullscreen in order to either sneak in a cheeky taunt, or go for thehigh range javelin wich on hit allows for a completely safe taunt. i personally never use taunt tho, not because its impractical, but its less consistent. shao kahn is a setplay character at core and he wants to capitalise on every knockdown while he loses neutral against basically every character. yes the taunt is incredible if you get it off, especially since all of his taunts give him access to powerful krushing blows, but everytime you use it you trade the potential setplay for the taunt and in a best case szenario go back to neutral. i personally always prioritize staying on my opponent and keeping up the pressure, but i know some players see it differently and really like playing with the extra threat of the taunts. tldr: taunts are actually practical but they are a risky tradeoff, and javelin toss has lomnger knockdown on high range
Good to you adding MKvsDC to these videos, I know you're not a fan of it but I feel it's important as it's the middle ground between the 3d games and MK9.
So how do we reconcile Shao Kahn’s Deception story with Armageddon’s? Did Havik bring him back and then all his underlings being brought back due to their souls being bound to him or is there still some random decoy running around and some random Shokan in Goro’s coffin?
@@insertedgynamehere___969 yeah in deadly alliance he faked his death, he got a double to get killed by the deadly alliance while he was recovering from the events of mk3 in armageddon it's the actual shao
In Mortal Kombat 11 Shao Kahns "Annihilation" move, I think that should have come with his standard moveset! AND I wish he had that Green Projectile, & Emperor Shield. I would have like to see more magic-based moves, rather than just different directions to throw his hammer...
Great video as always! For the sake of accuracy I would like to add that the "klassic" Shao Kahn could also be played in the PC port of the vanilla MK3 (I'm not sure about other ports). Since it was still a DOS game, you had to launch it with the '1000000' parameter (much like the '666' parameter unlocks Smoke) to make Shao Kahn and Motaro playable in 2-player mode.
The craziest thing about Shao’s insane block dash speed is that it seems to have carried over to M1K. I’ve recently been messing with him after maining Havik, and there is a notable difference.
There were some extra tidbits not mentioned during the Klassic section. The N64 version of Trilogy had a limitation on Kahn's hammer. It could only be used once every few seconds regardless if it hit or not compared to the AI who could use it repeatedly with no cool down. The PS1 version let Kahn use the hammer like the AI but removed its stun effect. Another neat thing is in the N64 version if your playing as Reptile vs Kahn or fighting another human using Reptile while playing as Kahn then Reptile's Forceball is completely unusable. It wont ever come out. However if fighting an AI as Reptile they can still use it and if a Forceball hits Kahn the game will crash.
The moment I saw this video on my feed, I was like "oh yeah, it's about time MK vs. DC showed up to the Competitive History series!" I really enjoyed playing as him in that game Now the only main game left that has yet to debut in the Competitive History series is the first one, Mortal Kombat (1992) I would personally love to see Shinnok next for CH. He's my favorite antagonist in the series and I enjoy playing as him in his few playable appearances
@JLT0087 the first fight in mk9s story mode is between Johnny Cage and Baraka. Or are you referring to the cinematic he-must-win hammer smash that technically never happens?
Conspiracy Theory: Ketchup had been purposefully doing Competitive History videos on MK characters that have not appeared in MK vs DC JUST to avoid talking about MK vs DC. Gonna get harder once more characters have been done. :3
Shao Kahn is the best villain in MK. Don’t need complex villains to be good. Sometimes a good all powerful warlord is all you need. What I find funny is despite being eh in Armageddon he actually ends up winning according to the beginning of story mode of MK9.
Shao Kahn lives up to the "what we expected" vs "what we got" meme. I wonder if it was a bit of an inside joke from the studio to tone him down as a playable to avoid him being the obviously cheap character he always was as a boss.
@scottchaison1001 As a boss, he hits hard, has a lot of weapons, and is cheaper than a dollar tree. However, when made into a legitimately playable character, the general consensus always seemed to rank him on the lower tiers (though I think it's because most players choose seemingly faster moving fighters).

Now the only main game left that has yet to debut in the Competitive History series is the first one, Mortal Kombat (1992)
I would personally love to see Shinnok next for CH. He's my favorite antagonist in the series and I enjoy playing as him in his few playable appearances
You have unlocked primal memories using the Fighter's Destiny soundtrack
I've had mk9 ai Shao Kahn throw his hammer 5 times in a row before. It was so annoying. I couldn't do anything!
Shao Khan being the 1st fight in MK 9's story mode has always been a source of incredible frustration for me.
@JLT0087 the first fight in mk9s story mode is between Johnny Cage and Baraka. Or are you referring to the cinematic he-must-win hammer smash that technically never happens?
@@joey.renaud I may have gotten confused by reinstalling after not playing for awhile, unless that cinematic is behind a you must win to loose fight.
Yooo I've been asking for this guy for a while now! Keeping on the boss train, I'd love to see some Shinnok!
Conspiracy Theory: Ketchup had been purposefully doing Competitive History videos on MK characters that have not appeared in MK vs DC JUST to avoid talking about MK vs DC.
Gonna get harder once more characters have been done. :3
Honestly im glad there’s ultimate mortal kombat deception with additional characters with goro and shao khan. God bless the modding community
Me who grew up with the base version of deception on ps2 : 🤡
@@hands-ongaming7180 don’t feel bad tbh cause the base ps2 game is still great.
Mk vs DC combos look pretty sick
Shao Kahn is the best villain in MK. Don’t need complex villains to be good. Sometimes a good all powerful warlord is all you need. What I find funny is despite being eh in Armageddon he actually ends up winning according to the beginning of story mode of MK9.
mk input reading by CPU at arcades was such a terrible time
Shao Kahn lives up to the "what we expected" vs "what we got" meme. I wonder if it was a bit of an inside joke from the studio to tone him down as a playable to avoid him being the obviously cheap character he always was as a boss.
He was great as a boss, I don't know what are you talking about.
Sorry my comment had nothing to do with the video but the ost from fighter's destiny in your opening got a good nostalgia hit on me 😆
This was beautiful! Now I’m hoping to see Jax in the future
i remember having the arcade controller where it was a big mortal kombat controller that you'd plug into A/V TVs
please a competitive history of shujinko
Whats the theme playing when classic shao khan is being talked about at the beginning?
