      It's great, especially in a series where the same guy wins all the time and nobody stays dead between games. Kang stayed dead until the time was reset, then killed again. I do wish writers and game devs would actually commit to keeping characters dead more.

      @@EndoScorpion it was such an outta their mind idea but it was so good and worked out so well that in the reboot they reused the idea! They also added onto the idea by making them revenants.

    • @EndoScorpion
      @EndoScorpion Год назад +56

      @@WinterBoots15 The heroes who died in Deadly Alliance were revenants in Deception. And at least that arc went some where and was concluded. Unlike in the NRS era.
      Dark Raiden also used Liu Kang's soulless body as a thrall (a revenant). The Midway era did it, and did it way better. The NRS era didn't add anything new or interesting to it, and most of the revenants were forgotten about, only showing up once or twice to get beaten up by the player.
      Heck, making Kang the ruler of Netherrealm was probably stolen from Noob Saibot's Deception arc, where he wanted to become ruler.

    1. This mean we gotta wait 2 years for a Deception analysis?

      I wasn’t a fan of the gameplay, but this era is my favorite when it comes to the lore.
      I think the 3D era has such a bad wrap because it introduced so many lame characters and the fatalities are some of the weakest in the series.
      But with that being said, I really respect the crew for putting so much effort into the lore and I personally love the new gamemodes. Chess, puzzle, kart, and conquest mode are all lots of fun!

    • @CarbonRollerCaco
      @CarbonRollerCaco Год назад +11

      People want gameplay first in their games. Street Fighter IV showed them decent fighting game play, and there were plenty of fighting kusoge already. That said, NetherRealm DOES need to get its act together with storytelling methods.

    @EndoScorpion Год назад +119

    I remember my brother and I playing MK1 and 2 on Sega Mega Drive, and we had a PC copy of Trilogy. I only rented MK4 and was quite disappointed with it at the time.
    But I distinctly remember my brother getting me Deadly Alliance for my birthday - and this is when I really fell in love with the series. I really dove deep into the lore and the characters. The 3D era is where MK peaked in terms of story. And the costumes were amazing, some of them still stand up at the the best in the franchise.
    Deadly Alliance not only cemented my love for the series, but also my love for Scorpion too. Prior to this; I'd play mostly as Johnny in Mk1-2, and Noob Saibot in Trilogy (he was so OP in that game). I love both of Scorpion's costumes in DA. His Hapkido style, and that swaying of his stance is forever burnt into my memory. Friends and family would rage-quit when I played as Scorpion because I would dominate. Even Moloch struggled. If I ever got stuck on Moloch with another character - I'd whip out Scorpion to kick his butt. Ironic considering Scorp's canon ending in this game.
    This has to be Raiden's besr costume too. To this day I still wish we got a proper conclusion to his Dark arc. I'd happily forget about all this timeline crap and just pick up from MK Armageddon or even Deception. I say Deception because I feel that Midway's need to include all the characters from the series hindered the story. While it was great to see some characters come back, some could've easily been forgotten or stayed dead. Still, I liked Taven and would love to see him return.
    Hsu Hao is no way near as bad as people say he is. I actually liked the dynamic between the two dragon clans and the OWIA. And the fact Hsu Hao destroyed the OWIA's means to travel between the realms put a massive delay on the heroes getting to Outworld, giving the Deadly Alliance enough time to amass their army. I mean, wasn't Li Mei the last soul to be (almost) put into the Dragon King army (with Bo Rai Cho saving her at the last second). Imagine the heroes got there a lot sooner: They could've regrouped with Cyrax and Kenshi; Sub Zero wouldn't be galavanting off with Frost elsewhere; Scorpion might not have needed to sneak in underground; Li Mei's souls wouldn't have been tainted by almost getting put into a skeleton body / forming a connection with Onaga; and Bo Rai Cho would've stuck around to help in the fight. Significantly strengthening the Forces of Light. I'm probably reaching a bit, but I still feel Hsu had a bigger effect on the story than people give credit for, and like other characters who got a second chance / expanded upon; there is potential there to make something better out of Hsu.
    Mavado can f off though! XD
    Never liked that guy!

    Thank you some much for this video. I'm am sick of every MK "fan" saying that the 3D era was horrible and that the NRS era is flawless. DA and Deception are probably some of my favorite games. I love how experimental Midway was in this era. We got cool mini games like Puzzle and Chess Kombat. I love that there was bigger approach to the story and lore of the games with Konquest Mode. And while most of the new characters may of not been great we still got some that are still beloved today like: Keneshi, Havik, Nitara and oh course Onaga who is leagues more memorable than Kronkia as a villian. The only valid criticism I'll accept is that the game's graphics had aged poorly. However IMO as long as a games are fun to play I feel like graphics shouldn't matter that much .

    Thank you for making this video 4thsnake. MK Deadly Alliance was actually my 1st fighting game, I was about 5 or 6 years old and my Dad bought it for himself and bought ATV Off Road Fury 2 for me. But after seeing him play he let me join in because he didn't know anyone else to play with, he definitely wasn't much of a gamer (lol MK never scared me as a kid and he noticed that, so it was cool kinda ) And ever since then, the 3D era of Mortal Kombat was a way for me, my Dad, and eventually my older sister to kinda bond with each other. While most families where playing Uno and Monopoly, we where playing whatever the newest MK on PS2 that was out during that era (our Mom was "Meh" about it because we would mostly play with Dad) I still remember passing the controller in Konquest mode for Deadly Alliance and Deception (P.S Deception was our favorite too, we loved all the different realms, we actually got stuck training with Sub-Zero then Kenshi later 😮‍💨) All this to say I definitely understand where you're coming from when you say " I don't know why people like to hate on the 3D era of Mortal Kombat" I thought that was the best/innovated time for MK too. It wasn't until I met gamers who played Tekken (like that series too) and Street Fighter (don't care for that series) that I realized the hate. I think it got all that hate for being different and not wildly fast or way simplified like the older MK. But either way I enjoyed the video, most of your other Kontent ( talkin about Tekken) and hope it "makes numbers" so you can make a Deception video too

    The game is bittersweet for me. I had played MK 2 and later MK4 at friend's house and was familiar with the MK movie and bits of the cartoon. I wasn't a hardcore fan, just a gamer kid, but I knew the status quo of characters (with my favourite being Liu Kang). MK wasn't really an "adult" game to me back then because, despite the blood, it was just what I considered lighthearted fun with good guys and bad guys. That was until Deadly Alliance came around and changed the way I viewed the series.
    I remember my dad renting it for me and after watching the rather grim intro movie, I was shaken to my core and I wasn't at all prepared for such huge story changes, particularly the death of Liu Kang. I remember not even being motivated to play the ladder or story modes because I was left so gutted by the intro. My enthusiasm was just gone. Granted, I was still a bit too young to be MK's target audience so I should've known better, but for a while MKDA put me off MK games and left a sour taste in my mouth. I eventually came around once Deception was released and enjoyed that game far more than any MK game prior. Deadly Alliance however I still avoided due to the mostly bad memories and the bleaker tone but once I got to my late teens/early 20s I had a curious and nostalgic urge to revisit it (I was heavily into MK9 by then). I don't think the game holds up too well gameplay wise (none of the 3D era games truly do) but I can appreciate it's unique aspects more as an adult than I could growing up. The music is still fantasitc and I do agree that the extra features like the Krypt and fighting style system, environmental fatalities, they were all super memorable. I still maintain that some of the changes were a bit too extreme and some ideas were half baked but I can appreciate that it tried to be something different.
    Also, Allan Stagg (RIP) is possibly my favourite Raiden voice. It's just so iconic to me and it's a shame he never got to do any more.

    Even though the 3D Era is before my time, I absolutely love it, I'll play deception over mk11 any day. My older cousins when I showed them MK unchained for the PSP, they got so happy and nostalgic, they remembered the special moves and some combos even after so many years, and my much younger cousin, him and I play mainly the 3D games he loves chess kombat and motor he thinks 3D Era is far better than modern, he got taste for sure lol. I love deception and unchained. Actually all of the PS2 Era games, MKD and MKA have great konquest modes, I love it. I wish NetherRealm acknowledged the 3D Era more or actually remastered, I love it. I can't wait till you do one for deception and armageddon

    There's just something about DA and deception that is so unique in terms of tone and lore. Liu kang getting killed and basically this game and the next being subsequent consequences of his death and the villian duos becoming threats was actually interesting.
    It's almost like thanos winning at the end of Infinity war and we get to see the aftermath of his victory. It was definitely a bold move to kill the hero of the series but overall it gave a darker tone that fitted so well for the ps2 era games.
    The newer games unfortunately don't have the same effect. Because we see characters can just die and somehow come back or are just undead. It just feels cheap and lazy to a degree. The other thing is having the two sorcerers team up was so unexpected and seeing what damaged they could really do made the main villian seem generic.

    watching this video really brought me back to that era of games from the 2000's that had really weird 3D models and areas that stood on the backbone of their art style. games like this one, Devil May Cry, the Ghost Rider PS2 game, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, and so many others. it's a big nostalgia trip. and seeing how this was my first MK game, i just had to watch it.

    Deadly Alliance blew me away back when it kame out for putting so much backstory into the stages, the kharacters and even their weapons and fighting styles; I've also always preferred 3D fighting over 2D fighting, so that's a treat too. With the opening, the independent storylines, attention to detail and more than one dour ending, DA really set a great tone in my mind and I was actually disappointed that Deception onwards didn't quite live up to the same sense of sophistication and depth that I got from DA (Deception and Armageddon are still kool, but they felt like noticeable shifts from DA to me). DA may not have done as much with its stages as it wanted to (I remember koncept art saying they wanted stage Fatalities in some stages but couldn't do them) and dropped the ball by not having Fujin and Kai involved, but I'll always love its ambition and love of details.
    This is also my favorite iteration of Reptile and all others just pale in comparison for me because as good as they kan be, I know I'm not getting this version. Probably bias from raising an iguana for 22 years, but Reptile's descent into self-loathing and unfortunate fate of being possessed by Onaga grabbed me on their own appeal and are probably still my favorite storyline in MK to date (or at least individual storyline when not konsidering the setup for the franchise as a whole).
    Thank you for kovering this game, Snake! I hope the numbers were favorable enough to konsider Deception and Armageddon.

    I always wondered how the 3d era games showed story and though konquest mode text blocks aren't the most interesting to get into I'd rather a story that takes a lot of reading and is good than a story that looks amazing but is shit and yeah I agree with the sentiment about needing playable fights some stories are devoid of conflict but still interesting as it shows us different sides of characters and relationships with other characters. ... Did u intend to rhyme "if this shit aint your jam you aint a real mk fan lol. THIS VIDEO WAS YOUR BEST HOLY FUCK THIS IS WHAT NICE SNAKE LOOKS LIKE GIVE ME MORE MOREEEEEEEEEE. Nah but in all seriousness it's clear you've have a lot of passion for this game and I'd love to try out the 3d era games one day but who knows when that'll be lol pc players at this time where kinda shafted rip.

    Full agree. As the MK game I've put the most time into I've concluded that it's my favourite :)
    Your point at 11 minutes is absolutely SPOT ON, these new games try put everything into a cutscene when old school text entries and subplot details make the game feel much bigger
    Kenshi I thought was added as a Blind Neo - Matrix throwback...
    Reptile is my favourite, and yes - I think a full lizard form is a good way to go, or atleast a transition to that
    Having a "profile" on this game was so big for me and my 2 brothers, it makes the Krypt the best version we've ever seen and trading these koins or watching your brother suck at test your might etc. was so fun. Seems modern games are trying to merge Konquest and Krypt, when Deception has the best version just as it's needed whereas Konquest deserves to be seperate and fully fledged

    I missed out on this game in it's heyday and I came in around MK Deception and then Armageddon but it's wild how hold these games are and it's just so nostalgic even if it makes me, heck all of us feel old remembering when these games were out and new. It really sucks that the fighting mechanics in these games feel so clunky because admittedly, that's what makes going back to them a challenge even though content-wise, it was pretty solid. I would love a remaster of these games with smoother controls for sure. I won't lie, back in the day I didn't think too highly of the 3D Era MK games, mainly because we had the likes of games like Soul Calibur 2 & Soul Calibur 3, Tekken Tag 1, Tekken 4 & Tekken 5, and Dead or Alive 2 & Dead OR Alive 3 out that played far better but in hindsight, the 3D era of MK was iconic in it's own right and it's nice that they took the risk with them.

    I loved this game. I was introduced to Deception *way* too early as a youngin', then got DA later because mom liked it [Mortal Kombat as a series] too. I'll always remember her favorites were Li Mei and Nitara (Mine were Baraka and Reptile). This game easily has my favorite designs for most of the characters. It's a shame people don't like most of the 3D era characters because of them being introduced here. I like Movado's design, hookswords, and the hidden spiked shoe thing. It was cool and he could have been done much better I think. Hsu Hao I didn't really care for though. Mokap was a riot. I just can't help but love him because of how dumb he is. Great stuff, honestly. I do agree Moloch can fuck right off though.
    That all said, being a dumb kid, I got this thinking it was Deception and being disappointed when I couldn't toss enemies off into the acid bath or off the dragonfly and stuff. I ended up playing the hell out of it anyway. Some of the fatalities scared little me back then (but I mean so did the MK4 press start to continue pit so I wasn't exactly the bravest lil' one), but some of them have always been genuinely hysterical like the Quan Chi one or cool like Scorpion's or Reptile's. The Krypt was my favorite part, and there were such iconic joke things and interesting stuff to see there. I LOVED the "Cooking with Scorpion" fake ad, and genuinely wanted to try a bowl of Kano's cereal back then.
    Later, I ended up getting Armageddon, Deception, and Shaolin Monks in a triple pack. Those 4 games are easily my favorites for different reasons. I love the unlockable content in Deadly Alliance and again, most of the designs, I loved the adventure like story in Deception and adored finding everything, because I liked the adventure feel in that game Shaolin Monks was right up my alley though I wish it had more unlockable people to explore with, and Armageddon having the Kreate a Fighter thing ended up taking up WAY more time than I would like to admit (and every single profile slot on the card...well, a few cards. ^^;).
    TL;DR, easily my favorite and most nostalgic MK eras. And fun shit like "Cooking with Scorpion" need to make a return someday.
    I'd like to see an analysis of those other 3 assuming you haven't (mostly Deception and Armageddon) if you feel up to it someday. I liked listening to you recap everything, a lot of which I forgot, and give your opinions on different aspects. It was a nice listen while I was kickin' ass in Splatoon 3. 🤭

    As someone who grew up with the NRS era, I honesty come to love and appreciate the 3D era a lot more than I did in the past due to how much they actually tried (and at times succeeded )at being both great fighting games and great Stories. I honestly don’t want future MK games to be carbon copies or remakes of the 3D era, I honestly want them to take inspiration and ideas from the 3D era and make something new outta it instead of relying on old ideas, and Nostalgia in order to get them through the another decade of BS content and adaptations. It honestly upsets me that fans and fanfics on RUclips, Twitter, Wattpad, and Deviant Art can make better MK content (that respects the franchise it’s adapting while being original) more so than the actual damn writers of the games. It’s sad really how times have changed for the worse

    DA's Reptile design is great! Makes you wonder why the NetherRealm era didn't decide to make his lizard form a gameplay mechanic for him. Like... think Devil Trigger for Reptile. He could get some buffs, some different moves, etc. His playstyle would be very unique among the Ninjas.
    On Topic: THE MUSIC. Omg. You're right! Seriously, if there was one aspect of old MK vs. new MK that truly stands out to me, it's the music. Old MK sounded like MK! Not a generic movie score. I suppose MK9 gets a plus in that regard since most of its OST were remixes of the classics. I forgot how groovy DA's character select was---it's like Shang Tsung and Quan Chi DJ-ing before killing the heroes. LOL
