When I see on the news that the supply of foods is short it doesn’t bother me as I don’t need much to survive. I became a minimalist on everything, including food.
I just went primarily vegetarian starting last week and it's helped my fitness program in strides. I'm not as hungry and I have more energy. Over eating is overrated.
@Peter me too. The holiday days are suppose to be all about family not food. People make excuses when they gain weight. I list 75 lbs and hit my goal on December 28, 2020. I lost my final 7 lbs between Thanksgiving and Christmas so I don't know why the majority of people gain weight.
We need to reset our mentality to avoid the over indulging. The foods are available all year round, the gifts are available all year round as well. Society has to stop buying into the mass marketing.
Nobody really explained what happens inside your body when you stuff yourself. How does stuffing yourself affect the heart (holiday heart attacks, etc.)? Does it overtax your liver, pancreas, or kidneys? Everyone knows you feel full, tired, and lethargic. What happens inside your body? The question wasn’t answered and I would have liked to know how extreme overeating stresses the body.
Holiday heart attacks are more the result of the steeply increased saturated fat intake that tips over what the arteries can handle. As a result for example a plaque segment that was already detaching from the endothelial wall cells in an artery just gives way and blocks the flow of blood resulting in a heart attack.
Hogwash, @@j-sm4554. Saturated fats are GOOD for us. Ancel Keys lied. It's the PUFAs in industrial vegetable seed oils that are dangerous. And sugar is worst of all.
You pretty much answered it yourself. It’s taxing on all our organs. We raise our insulin levels and change our metabolic rate. We don’t allow our body to digest food properly. Overindulging is not good. It creates toxicity and the energy expended to digest after overeating can bring on long term disease.
This is a really important podcast. Chuck is a wonderful host and knowing that he has overcome significant weight issues makes it all the more real. The guest this week was fantastic, too! Please have her on again soon as she has great insights.
I would not go into a full explanation to justify being vegan, I would simply say "I like it and it suits me", otherwise people will start debating a person's reasons.
According to Dr Joel Fuhrman there are a significant amount of people who cannot convert the ALA from foods like flaxseeds into omega 3. So they will eat these foods thinking they are safe from dementia that could result from lack of omega 3 but are not safe because they have a genetic inability to convert it. So he recommended getting an omega 3 blood draw to see if you are one of those people. If the panel comes back deficient you would have to supplement but if it’s fine than you have one less thing to worry about. He has some RUclips videos on this important topic.

This was a good conversation. I was most interested in the talk on bones. I liked all her points about calcium and weight bearing exercise. Also the mention of plant based milks that are fortified with calcium was great to hear. I wish more was said about Vitamin K2 for this topic of bone health. K2 is very different from K1 and my understanding is it helps calcium to be deposited in our bones and not in our soft tissues. As vegans there are very few K2 food sources. However the best source of K2 of all is natto which is a plant based food and I myself have been eating natto specifically to get K2 into my diet. It is not a normal food for me (culturally) but I eat it specifically to get that key vitamin for bone health and not take a supplement. I am often surprised how few people talk about K2 on the subject of bone health and as vegans we can do more to protect our bones. By eating the one big K2 food option we have we can end the stereotype of weak and frail vegans or studies that say vegans are more likely to have a fracture. I hated and feared natto at first myself but put health first and now I really like it. I suggest others eat it too but if you do buy at least 3 weeks worth of it (plus some brown mustard) and commit to eating it daily no matter what you think of it. Then after three weeks it will be a habit and I bet you’ll actually like it. Just because you eat Vegan doesn't mean you are eating a healthy diet. So many products labeled "vegan" have an abundance of fats, salts, sugars, etc. For me, I started WFPB earlier this year when my doctor told me my cholesterol was 205, but "don't worry about it because all of your other numbers are great." That didn't sound great to me, so I began WFPB. I lost 15 pounds in 2 months. I have plateaued at 157, and I guess that is where my body wants to be. Too much NICE cream? I won't eat turkey on Thanksgiving but will still enjoy eating the sides. Because, hey, I still have to live. So, I made a pumpkin pie and homemade cranberry sauce. Plus, my husband makes an awesome sausage stuffing. And, we'll have winter squash that he grew all summer long. I'll start the day with my 30 mile bike ride (ride 150 miles per week.) I am thankful for my family and rolled oats.
Weight plateau's don't seem so rare in people who have just converted to a plant-based diet. I lost 15 lb's but the weight loss just stalled at some point and wouldn't budge, no matter how much I dropped calories, because my metabolism would also slow down.
Salt and sugar aren't bad unless it's gmo sugar. Only the added fats and oils and chemical additives are bad. As long as you don't eat more than 2,000 mg of sodium everyday there isn't really anything wrong with eating salt.
This was really interesting... I have had an ED since I was 13 and that often includes episodes of bingeing (followed by extreme restriction). I never really think about what really goes on in my stomach/gut when I do that...

It is strange hearing the promotion of a Vegan diet, while at the same time, so many doctors in health experts are so passionate about the paleo diet ... and convinced keytones is the way to go.
Obviously, half of them are in denial. So far, there is no evidence that veganism is unhealthy. Most doctors aren't really extensively educated in nutrition, as they are in medication. But IMO, because they ARE doctors, they feel like they're experts in nutrition as well. It would be like a heart surgeon feeling qualified to expound on back surgery. Not to say that some can't be educated in both fields, but I think the majority of doctors recommending keto are in the former category. What we need is a public debate. I've been vegan for years, vegetarian for even longer, and haven't eaten red meat for 20 years, and never felt healthier. My keto friend is fat and diabetic ...
@@KenJackson_US I'm not a nutritionist, but I believe that fermentation, soaking, and sprouting reduce phytates and lectins. Cooking and boiling reduce oxalates. Not sure what glucosinolates are, but I don't think I really care. I feel that even anti nutrients are good for us in small amounts, and if we eat a variety of plants, use different preparation methods, keep our micro biomes healthy by getting lots of fiber, and avoid toxins and saturated fats, we'll be good. I was in the butcher shop with my keto friend when it hit me ... everyone in it, including the butcher and excluding me, was fat. Every time I'm in a vegan restaurant, the majority of the people are thin and healthy looking. All I can say is, ironically, every vegan I know is healthy, and every keto person I know is "genetically predisposed" (their own words) to diabetes, heart disease, and obesity ... 🤔
Eating too much food overall isn't the problem. Eating too much FAT is the problem. I eat anywhere from 2000-4000 calories a day, as much as I feel like until I'm not hungry anymore, and I'm only 5'8" and 120 pounds, and I don't even workout now. I eat very low fat, only 1-10% fat. No overt fats or oil at all. Yesterday I ate 2.5 pounds dry weight of rice in one day, about 4000 calories from rice alone.
