  • Jen Landon (Teeter) had an interesting approach to the latest bunkhouse scene: "I threw every dirty word that I knew at [Finn Little] with the intention of shocking him and horrifying his mother who was just off camera." The cast breaks down season 4, episode 9 "No Such Thing as Fair." Yellowstone airs Sundays at 8/7c on Paramount Network.
    #Yellowstone #ParamountNetwork
Yellowstone is a drama series that follows the Dutton family, led by patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner). The Duttons control the largest contiguous ranch in the U.S. and must contend with constant attacks by land developers, clashes with an Indian reservation and conflict with America's first national park.

This story hits all of the nails right on the proverbial head. It helps too that I was aligned with Indian culture for 40 years and the past 12 years visiting a ranch outside Meeker, CO. Again, whoa! Rip is the smoke detector of Beth and the wranglers. John is the sprinkler system for everything. All of the characterizations are perfect!

Beth and John’s Major Altercation was kind of like two people with similar goals getting their backs up two porcupine’s! So angry and feeling attacked that they can’t get close to get down to the real issues mainly because I don’t think they really know what all the “issues” really are!
A lot of action and reaction and not a lot of thought in their words!
One thing that really got John’s back up was the unfairness of Summer’s situation especially when she thought Beth had her back. It was one amazing and intense scene!
Yes, John telling Beth he was disappointed with her was hard for Beth to hear, (the worst thing a parent can say…knowing from personal experience. Because you feel like you can’t undo that, you know?) John didn’t take his regular time with this issue of sitting and thinking, thinking and sitting as he does with most problems…this was very reactionary for him. I’m thinking he might be a bit scared of what Beth has become and also feeling guilty because he helped her become that way with no lines drawn on what is right or wrong or fair.
Instead of hearing all John had to say, Beth is focused only on the word disappointed. In her grief and not knowing how to release it, yet knowing she has to - the quiet and tenderness of Walker who saw her pain (Walker is a horse trainer and could see Beth’s struggle with horses the day he helped her overcome the fear of them. I think if her Mother and John had taken a more gentle approach in teaching Beth about horses and not being so rough thinking, she had to toughen up - she would have learned to enjoy horses, instead it created fear and mistrust of them. I’m glad Rip didn’t rush in hot headed and will wait to talk with Beth before thinking there is something between Beth and Walker in any other way) and helped her by playing the beautiful and poignant song so she could give herself permission to loose control in emotions which the tenderer ones are the one’s she keeps reigned in so well.
Beth being asked to leave is quite a stark or harsh reaction! Not sure if it’s the lodge or the entire ranch! Stunning!
And I have to say the amazing acting of Kevin Costner and Kelly Reilly in this scene was powerful! The sheer anger in John’s voice yet not at full yelling power of “I’ll throw this table through the effing wall!” Wow! Great acting, great directing, and great writing! Thank you Yellowstone and Taylor Sheridan, you continue to amaze and have us all spellbound!

Maybe his Gov run has changed John a bit. We know he likes Summer but don't sick an attack dog on your enemies and then hit the dog on the nose with a phone book because you don't like how it attacked them. 🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

I did not like the complete 180 by John on Beth. Not at all. Last week was filled with father-daughter family moments. This week was the total opposite. There was no discussion of Beth's strategy; no asking for reasons; just an immediate jump to push some sort of jealousy narrative as a motive for picking on Summer and assuming Beth was out to ruin her as acceptable and preferred collateral damage. And what ever happened to the ranchers asking Kacey to run for governor?

They have a lot of loose ends to tie up before this season ends. The kid with the lug nuts and his mother from last season’s finale just disappeared without explanation. Where did Garrett get the money to finance the hit? They keep talking about a militia but as far as I know, militias are political, not hitmen for hire. If anything, I think a Montana militia would support John. They set up this season with last season with three entities in a battle, Willa Hayes from Market Equity, Angela Blue Thunder from the res, and Beth from Yellowstone. They must have lost some actors due to problems with covid and scheduling, but the writing failed to make the transition. It was sloppy writing to move antagonists from Market Equities to Garett and some guy in prison.

My thoughts (two cents) on Yellowstone Season 4, Episode 9 “No Such Thing As Fair”
SPOILER ALERT for those who have not seen the above episode keep on scrolling past this post!
Wow! Yellowstone Season 4, Episode 9 “No Such Thing As Fair” was great! I had to re-watch because there is so much to unpack!
I was shocked to see Beth turn away from Rip but then realized why. I do love them together!
I continue to love the growing relationship between John and Carter! I loved Carter’s reaction to riding the first time! John is so patient with him too, but gruff when he needs to be! (Kevin Costner was born to ride…he looks at one his horse!) I wonder if John shared the family story he told Carter with all his kids. I hope so, but if not he needs to. Help understand the heritage of the ranch and their family.
Wow! Sparks are flying between Beth and John all episode long! The coffee cup was too much! I know Beth is helping him to protect the ranch but John is a grown man and can take care of himself. I understand her fear of losing him after his coma, but it’s a bit too much. Her anger against Jamie is so misplaced, yes she has legitimate issues with him, but Jamie is not the devil. John is seeing just a glimpse to how out of control his daughter is and although he needs her to be evil - it’s out of control.
The fallout of the shootout at the Belgrade Corner Diner is going in John’s favor especially toward his running for Governor. Jamie is watching the governorship slip from his hands. The counsel he’s getting from Christina and Garrett is so misplaced and wrong. I was wondering when Christina would learn about who exactly Garrett is - his past, murder and killing Jamie’s Mom. Christina’s reaction is normal and not wrong. That Jamie can compartmentalize Garrett killing his mother so blithely shows just how off-balance Jamie is right now. He’s reeling from all he’s learned about his parentage (which we are not sure we know all the fact yet) and being spurned by John Dutton again…he’s swirling in a whirlpool and has no footing. I hope he gets his center soon before factors spin out of his or anyone’s control.
Well, we now know who will replace Donnie and things won’t be so easy for John to slip by before. And the burning question if Summer and John had slept together really got blurted out there. I agree that Beth really let Summer out to dry with no plans to help her situation. John is right to be angry about Summer’s plight and Beth being the instigator. I’ve seen come comments about thinking John wants a relationship with Summer…I think it’s more about unfairness and doing what’s right for her. I don’t understand why Beth has to leave…I think it’s to give John time to think about it all.
I’m loving the growing relationship between Kayce and Mo! It’s like they are brothers! I hope we see more of them together. I was right in my earlier conjecture that the Wolf is Kayce’s spirit animal. I loved hearing and seeing the traditions of the Indian people and about the relationship between humans and wolves. I look forward to learning more as Kayce completes his quest for a vision. I think this process will help Kayce’s PTSD issues too.
Garrett and John meeting up by accident! Loved it! You could cut the tension with a knife and so much was unsaid! There seems a whole lot to be uncovered between them and who was Jamie’s Mom and what was she to both of them? And after running into Garrett - - John lost his appetite and I don’t blame him.
To the doubters about where Taylor Sheridan was going by showing Jimmy at the 6666 - now we know. He’s headed back to the Yellowstone Ranch! I’ve been enjoying Jimmy’s quest to become a cowboy from the first episode in Season 1. Seeing Emily and Jimmy laying outside under the stars was very romantic, cute, and funny at the same time. I like them together so much! I agree that Emily loves him for who he is and doesn’t want to control or direct his life. Later, Travis getting to see the difference in him was gratifying.
When Jimmy realized he was leaving 6666 you could see and feel the keenness of a loss he didn’t expect to feel…of someone who really seems to understand him. I enjoyed watching the cutting competition! Those horses are so talented as are the riders! Jimmy got to see the true artistry and perhaps thinking on what he might like to do in the future instead of rodeoing. Jimmy is still learning about what a cowboy is and glad Travis is taking the time to let him know the difference.. Their goodbye was oh too short. Poor Jimmy!
Woah! No nice dinner in the alternate dining room! And loved Rip and Carter skipping out! Rip knows something good wasn’t gonna happen.
Wow the latent anger of John without totally raising his voice was powerful, “I’ll throw this table through the effing wall!” Beth has a take no prisoner’s approach to anyone she doesn’t care about and John is trying to teach her the difference. John doesn’t take any prisoners either but he does weigh each decision on a lifetime of experience (that Beth doesn’t have) and the difference between right and wrong. He’s realized how loose a cannon he’s let her or helped her to become. I think when John has more time to think he’ll realize he’s just as responsible…making her or letting her become the monster of evil he needed to get things done. This “fight” between them is far from over or resolved. The words, “I’m disappointed in you” are words Beth has never heard before. Now she might understand just a tad of how Jamie has felt.
I’m so glad Jimmy went back to see Emily. He’s realized that although this happened quickly…that it’s the real thing and he’s not willing to let her go. I loved the line “I’m not saying goodbye…I’m keeping you!”. I loved that Emily understood the value of a debt owed and word given, a true cowgirl knows the meaning The depth of emotion was so palatable! Amazing scene that brought tears to my eyes.
So funny…I loved Carter being the “card shark” kid in the bunkhouse. I can see why Beth didn’t call for Rip because he was happy as was Carter and I’m not sure she could explain to Rip all the emotions that were rampaging inside her. For all who don’t like the character Walker, he is a very sensitive soul and can recognize pain in others…a true poet. The moment of sharing the song with Beth was intimate but not in a romantic or sensual way which I hope Rip seeing them together is not mistaking it for. Beth is heart and soul hurt and didn’t need to talk…just the song as she requested.
I wonder if Kayce remembers the wolf he was prepared to fight when his mother died. He forgot to mention that wolf to Mo and Rainwater. I think this quiet time will be good for Kayce in many ways. As always all the beautiful landscapes on the show are breathtaking! I could watch hours of just the land, the animals and the beautiful music of Yellowstone playing!
I sure hope that the altercation between Jimmy and Mia ends with Jimmy staying true to Emily in the previews of episode 10 “Grass On The Streets”! I can’t wait for next Sunday, yet don’t want Season 4 to be over! Then begins the long wait for Season 5! At least we have 1883, Mayor of Kingstown and the upcoming 6666 Yellowstone spinoff to help ease the wait! Until then, binging the series will have to suffice!
