"My '05 Chevy SS Silverado is trying to kill me!" What could be so bad the CAR WIZARD can't fix it?

  • The CAR WIZARD 🧙‍♂️ recently got this truck and it just seems that it's slowing trying to kill him. What's so wrong that he can't fix it, and what do you think he should do about it? Also, I do not believe the truck wanted this video out. Both cameras had corrupt video files (which has never happened before or since), the editing was almost impossible, and the lift music didn't save (we added stock music from YT). It's amazing you are able to watch this.

Use that insurance money to do a frame swap and to put new fuel/brake hard lines in it. With your resources and ability it shouldn't take too long to get finished. Plus once it's done you'll have a very solid truck that you know what's been done to it and also done properly. Plus you know deep down inside it will make Hoovie happy and you can sell it back to him for a profit, lol. 😆

Personally, as expensive as vehicles are today thanks to supply chain issues and Bidenflation, I would buy a new frame and move everything over. The 6.0L V8 is one of the top 3 GM motors of all-time.

The way things are done in US is just weird. You guys can literally buy some old POS and start driving it right away ? Is that true ?
In Canada Dave could sell that truck "as is"
That means it hasn't been inspected. Any used car has to have a safety inspection done before you can get license plates. Any thing that failed on the safety inspection must be repaired first. Without a passed safety you can not get plates. And insurance is an absolute must. You get caught driving with no insurance that's a five thousand dollar fine.
When you buy a used car you can get a temporary plates. It's only good for 10 days. This is just so you can drive the vehicle from where you bought it straight to the shop that would do the inspection. This is a one time thing. You can't keep going to the MOT every 10 days for a new temporary sticker. Your not suppose to be driving all over hell on a temporary.
Basically you can't drive an old shitbox without it being repaired. There are lots and lots of shady mechanics out there that will sign off on that POS. Fake safety inspections.. Depending where you are the prices can be two hundred bucks to a couple of thousand.
Mechanics like this should have their tradesman license revoked. It's not doing anyone any good.

It'd be interesting to see a complete frame swap. How much work would be involved in that, how many hours?
The other thing is I've seen something similar to this as if this vehicle in particular is especially susceptible to rusting. It's so widespread across the whole truck what could it be. There was a time in the UK when a lot of cars had this grounding strip attached to the frame because, so the story went, static electricity build up made cars susceptible to rust.

    • @Mike-qp8bv
      @Mike-qp8bv Год назад +5

Frame swap on a Chevy is around 30 hours labour. And there are many variables. It's never just the frame. Fuel lines, brake lines. Good time to upgrade the steering and suspension. It's all the little things that add up very quickly. And when you are working with a vehicle with severe rust, add some more labour because of that.
Is it worth it ? Probably not on an older truck. It may increase the resale value, but not by much. The amount of cash involved in a frame,, you will never get it back. So you either fix it and keep driving it forever. Or sell it the way it is. Let the next sap worry about it.

Time for a frame swap, if you want to. Maybe there's a good one at a local scrap yard, and it can be cleaned up, and just painted. As Rich of DeBoss Garage has mentioned in his videos, just simply painting a good frame with rattle can paint, will help it last. It helps create just a basic barrier to keep salt and moisture from corroding the metal. I figure, since Rich is in the same Province as me, in Ontario, Canada, where we have heavy salt usage and quite a lot of humidity. The salt and humidity just make vehicles rot, and his truck frames are still lasting, 15 years later, simply with rattlecan paint, its fine to use.

Ended up POR15 the rear part of the chassis after a whole lot of time cleaning it up. But I replaced a whole lot of parts. At the time I had to put a lot of money into the truck or sell it for nothing and spend boat loads to replace it. I love the truck so I decided to put the money into it. Brake lines, calipers, fuel lines, fill neck, rear bumper, diff cover, fuel tank straps, shock mounts, upper control arms, front end bushings, zone 6” lift, wheels and tires. You name it I probably did it. Still on the list, rockers, cab corners, bed supports, fender arches, body mounts and 1 driver front body mount bracket. Plan on repainting the entire truck after the body stuff is done. Another reason why I decided to go this route was 1-truck is paid off, 2-I like the crew can configure better than newer ones, 3-not my daily driver, I wanted to do a hot rod project but don’t have the room so I turned this into my hotrod project. I think I caught my frame just enough to be saved. I didn’t have wholes through it like yours though. I’ve looked for new frames but they are unavailable.

200k on these trucks could be good or bad. Curious if it's on original transmission and if the rear differential has been serviced or rebuilt. A neglected differential and transmission are both pricey repairs which would determine whether or not I would want to keep this vehicle.

Hey Wizard, I had an 04 ss silverado. I purchased from a used car lot.. looked great at first. Within a week the ugly rust that was covered in under body coating, began to show it's head. Hub barrings, break lines, exhaust, frame. . Loved the truck, but had to get rid of it. Traded in to finance a new frontier, which lead to my new tundra today. .get rid of it. ..

A frame swap sounds nice until one tries finding a good donor frame, as well as all the brackets and other pieces which have long been discontinued you'll need to do the swap correctly. I own one of these eras of Chevy trucks, and they just rust. The body looks decent, but in reality there is highly likely to be rust already well formed on the insides of the panels and rockers, and will poke through eventually. Spending thousands on parts and labor to rebuild a truck that's worth.. $7-8k give or take when finished really makes little sense aside from a decent bit of content.

How much more is the frame going to disintegrate if you replace the fuel lines? Or brake lines? I agree with the comments about doing a frame swap, considering the net cost of the truck at this point. The biggest concern of doing a frame swap is whether there is enough left of the body to go with it.

Sir you are in a unique position, you own a top end vehicle shop/garage, you've got every tool there is, and right now you have a basically free truck to work with, do a frame swap, fix a few other things, and you would have a very cool/very expensive type of vehicle, for someone like me that might not be a practical thing to do because of the cost of reliable labor in a top end shop like yours, and it's a true SS, just an idea, thankyou for the video.

I bought a used truck for 13k. It was beautiful on the outside. When I bought it I didnt check the underneath, because the outside was so great looking. One day, exiting the highway, downhill at 55 mph, the brakes gave out. Was able to slow it enough for the curve of the off ramp to be safe. I limped it home and it never drive again. Brake lines were so rusted, it was like squashing a grape. The guy I had fixing it told me, well I could replace these brake lines, but your frame is so rusted it wont be safe. So, yes, I nearly has my ford f250 kill me too, haha. In a farming community, its best to check everything on trucks, as the farmers use it for hauling corrosive fertilizer and what not. The truck was so nice on the outside i used to get compliments about it. Be aware of trucks and what they were used for prior to your purchase.

If you didn't have all the other projects, I'd say do the frame swap. It's a little remarkable that the frame rust is so bad, yet the body is relatively decent. The rockers are still there, as are the cab corners and all the fenders, especially around the wheel well. Given the mileage though, as well as your busy schedule, I'd let that one go. You've essentially got your money out of it at this point.

Third option: reconfigure the cabin similar to that of an off-shore racing motorboat, or at least a center console Boston Whaler (17' Montauk). Sitting in a truck with a roof is over-rated. A Chariot SS WOULD BE WAY MORE FUN.

    Frame swap vote here.
I have a '03 with similar rust problems... worst in a few ways, better in a lot of ways. I'd like to frame swap it, but I can't afford the downtime right now.
Speaking of fuel smell, the top of the fuel pump can rust up, causing a fuel smell. If it does turn out to be the lines, however, those lines are real easy to swap during a frame swap. I've already had to swap the entire brake lines on mine... and my tranny lines are on borrowed time. Oddly, my fuel lines look pretty good... I'm 99% sure they are original.
Air bag light... check that wire bundle under the passenger seat. I'm chasing an air bag light problem, but my code reader doesn't read SRS codes.

Wizard should come visit Vermont and see what *real* rust looks like. That frame isn't great but it's still got some life left in it. Change the brake lines and fuel lines, reinforce the frame with some angle iron and keep driving it for another 5 years.
