5.3 has a little common oil leak from the gasket above the oil filter under a small plate where an optional oil cooler can be installed. Looks like rear main but instead it’s a simple little gasket quick cheap repair.
About the heads all 4.8/5.3 came with either 862/706 heads and not all of these had that issue replacing the head to either 243/799 heads are common but not necessarily a have to on a stock application as these were used on newer 4.8/5.3 (combustion chamber 64cc) but 317 is a no go don't replace the stock heads with the 317 castings as those only came in the 6.0 these heads have a larger combustion chamber (71cc vs 61cc) resulting in a drop in compression and poor engine performance when used on a 4.8/5.3

No payment option is best option on a vehicle hands down. My 99 Sierra has 133k and I have a 06 Civic for work commute. It will be a while before needing payments and even then may opt to pay off when I buy something.
Absolutely love my 01 5.3 had to replace the water pump around 160k but it was so easy. These trucks are definitely worth rebuilding transmissions too can get a lot of miles from these

My fuel gauge shows low fuel warning light and sits on empty at start up. After a few miles it starts working. Any ideas what is causing this. Sure am not going to pull the sender as I am sure it lives in the gas tank
I’m restoring a 2003 Silverado 1500 LS. One thing that really bugs me is the horn not working, it works when the alarm goes off but not when I press it. Also got a check engine light on 😅 but funny thing is that transmission and engine work pretty well might be a sensor or something .
I had an '05 GMC Sierra quad cab with the 5.3 V8. The speedometer would quit going down the road after about an hour of driving. If you followed the computer's oil life percentage values, the engine oil would have clumps in it when oil change time arrived. I had to keep the spare tire in the bed as the cable winch for holding it in the bed froze up and I couldn't find a replacement either from the dealer, aftermarket or in a junkyard. Apparently that was an all too common part to fail and replacements were just unavailable. This was the truck that finally made me swear off GM products.
the truck i just looked at had a wide cargo strap holding the spare tire in place. I thought that was a really good solution so you didn't have to keep it in the bed
Just use full synthetic oil and a good filter and it will easily go 7-10k miles per change. These really are amazing trucks that are easy and cheap to fix. Have an 01 with a 5.3 with 165k and it still runs and drives really good. They get weird quirks but are such good trucks and easy to work on and maintain. Just had to replace the water pump super easy and cheap. I do hate the abs systems on these I prefer them not to work. I love my truck and just keep looking for excuses to replace it but I can’t find any reasons. Just wash them good and often and it will prevent rust make sure to spray off in wheel wells and underneath too. Wish GMC made vehicles like this still
"Or other electrical issues within the cabin" is a polite way of saying, "You're going to be tinkering with annoying electrical bugs and glitches until you sell the dang thing."
This is usually a battery or alternator going bad... I had this problem until I changed the alternator and I been free of any issues for six months now...
@@KoaGuy No, no, no. GM printed circuit boards are junk, just look up some instrument cluster repair videos. I found shoddy solder joints on my IC and rearview mirror. Driver's door module isn't conformal coated so moisture + dust causes bizarre behavior like the seat heaters coming on uncommanded. The HVAC control module is so bad, Dorman reproduces it. Dorman! Never had any of these problems with Fords. They're an electrical nightmare.

Just bought an 03 GMC 2500HD with a 148000 miles on it with minimal rust. Interior is excellent shape. Had to replace fuel lines and the arm rest center console has a huge crack in it. Otherwise a solid truck
Update on the Sierra It has 168,000 truck got very worn out after this comment. I'll leave it that, truck is running good. Also the interior is in excellent shape for its age.
I have had square body pick ups, obs, and gmt 800 pick ups. Gmt 800 are better at everything. Best truck they ever built. Just wish sheet metal was better. My only complaint.
exterior wise, the only hardware problem is the rear tailgate handle, and handle housing. Interior, the window actuator trim, or the whole unit would just fall out. on the extended cab, the door handles on the rear would VERY often die, and the rod connecting the handle to the latch would fall of. The engines, the LB7(01-03) had some injector problems, and oil cooler gasket problems. the LLY/LBZ (Late 04-07) didnt have problem, the only difference between the LLY and LBZ is the transmission, although there is literally no difference what so ever, at all, the LLY shares the same transmission as the LB7 which is the 5 speed A1000 Allison, LBZ had a 6 speed Allison 1000. the only difference is the TCM, the A1000 has the 6th gear its just not programed to use it
These are the best modern trucks made and if it wasn't for rust, they'd go for 40+ years. The only trucks that compare for their generation are the 67-72 c10 and a lot of those are still on the road.
Why? Because you own one? Isn’t that the “govt motors”era? I personally never like the wall-eyed look of the 07 yrs. The best? The 2000. Why? Because I own one.😊
They didn't make disc brakes standard on all models in this series... most of them had rear disc, but the standard rear brake was still a drum rear on certain trim levels.
These are prone to problems with the front hubs. The tone ring rusts, the bearings get loose, and antilock triggers at low speed stops on dry pavement. Fuel lines, evap vent lines, and brake lines all rust out. Rear spring shackles rust and break if you don't catch them in time. I had the 4.3 with a chronic oil leak at the front seal. Had to have the intake manifold gaskets done when I found coolant leaking into the oil, too. Dash and radio light bulbs are soldered in and hard to replace. Minor but annoying problem: the pivot point behind the tailgate handle gets sticky and keeps the tailgate from latching. If your tailgate is falling open, pull the plastic trim behind the handle out and lube the pivot in the middle of the latch cables. Mine was a 2002 Chevrolet WT bought new. It had the rare 5 speed manual.
My fix for the ABS is to get rid of it. I have never liked the activation of the ABS and the few occasions it has gone off it was because of a failure in the system. I've had a few of these trucks, they are really solid overall. Rust is manageable if you clean it often. I live in MN and never had a frame go bad on any of mine but the lines and shackles have.
@@KoaGuy At 15 years old with 170,000 miles my frame was still good. The bottoms of the doors were rusting out and the second gear synchro was worn out. I traded it rather than investing in a trans rebuild, clutch, and door shells or patches. I got my money's worth but the recurring front hub/anti-lock issue was annoying.
Fixes that worked for me with the antilock activating was to remove the sensors, clean the hub assembly as rust develops and with that swelling pushes out the sensor causing the ABS to not work properly and activates when you are almost stopped. Check the sensor head to make sure there isn't any rust on it and clean as necessary. Add some antisieze lubricant onto the hub and sensor head and put it back together, and you are good to go.
03 Silverado 1500... Only issue is persisting check engine light with evap code... everything has been replaced and it still persists. Wondering if it's the fuel pump?
Muy 03 has cold electrical problems... Key chine inoperative Stereo no sound. Once the temp is above 40 or hvac warms the interior then all works fine.
Tow haul wire cutting itself, spare tire not deploying, tailgate falling open while driving, ac resistor burning out, steering wheel bushing wearing out (causes shudder while driving). Good video tho
All those problems seem minor, compared to blowing spark plugs out of the head or your transmission failing at 60000 miles. I've got an 03 4.3 with well over three hundred thousand miles on it and that's all it has been this whole time is just little stupid s***, pretty much everything you just stated LOL
Pop the plastic trim out from the tailgate handle. Behind it you'll see two levers on a pivot, with each one attached to a cable that goes to the tailgate latches. Lube the pivot and your tailgate will latch and stay closed. You're welcome.
You dont want a 317 head on a 5.3. That is 6.0 head and is designed for 4.0 inch bore. It would loose a lot of compression on a 5.3 and run poorly. If you change cylinder heads only use 4.8 and 5.3 castings on 5.3 engines.
Had a 2000 with the switch on the dash where u can turn passenger air bag on or off. There was a switch there that made all four tires turn. At once. Text me back if u never heard this before but so so true.
Evap codes, g80 rear ends going out, trans not the strongest, tcase likes to put holes in the case. Ball joints are weak, Blend door issues, driver side heated seat goes out. Wheel bearing suck, automatic climate can cut out on the screen. Power steering pumps can snap that shaft off. O2 sensors, probably is more but over all not a bad truck. Keep up on your maintenance.
Never heard of the pump snapping a steering shaft in half. And the only time Ive seen G80s go bad is people abusing the truck beyond reason. Ball joints are stout and greaseable, only seen big wheel and tires with lift kits wipe out ball joints (aside from having a gazillion miles). And not all the transmission options are weak.
@@KoaGuy If you follow the the page of the gmt 800. It happens all the time. The most recent one I know of snapping the shaft was on an avalanche close to 300k I believe an he was hauling a camper an he made a sharp turn an snap the pump.

I have the 6.0 lq4 engine in me 2002 gmc sierra denali, it's got 325 hp, and 480 ibs of torque. I also have the quadrasteer and AWD (not 4wd) I love this trucks mostly because it was passed down from my grand father. I've never had any problems except the MAF sensor going out.
LQ4s make 360-370 lbs-ft of torque I assume the "480lbs of torque" was a typo

Heck yeah! All of them are great. The afm/dod stuff needs more attention, though, and the torque converters need to be beefier for those trucks that have that. I'm a gmt800 owner. 01 3500 dually 6.0l, 4L80e, 4.10 gears. Best truck i've ever owned!
I bought my 2005 4.3 regular cab new for $18K. It's at 188K miles and all I've had to fix is the front wheel bearings and rebuild the cluster. Being in Texas, I don't have to deal with the rust problem. Haven't had a car payment in 12 years and plan on going another 15 years without one.
Mine is 2003...paid off in 2009...no problems ...JUST put new brakes all around. Just change oil..plugs and replaced the valve cover. Only 144k miles.

Very good, comprehensive evaluation.
Willy McCoy ok
the truck i just looked at had a wide cargo strap holding the spare tire in place. I thought that was a really good solution so you didn't have to keep it in the bed
Why would you ever follow the "oil life percentage" that is a recipe for disaster for any manufacturer

This is usually a battery or alternator going bad... I had this problem until I changed the alternator and I been free of any issues for six months now...
Typical electrical issues are just grounding issues which are really easy to fix
@@brianp6965 The gauge cluster issue is a simple 100 dollar fix send it out a guy fixes it and its fine for the life of the truck. I mean other issues like the ground straps for the chassis off the engine break over time

Otherwise a solid truck
Still going strong?
Update on the Sierra
It has 168,000 truck got very worn out after this comment.
Best gm truck ever built actually 2nd gen Sierra btw
I have a 04 Silverado crew cab with step side bed

@@KoaGuy my guess is rusted grounds as well.
Dam your must have some offbthebline on a Friday!😖
The body control module is known for going bad. And causing a drain on the battery.
Snapped exhaust manifold bolts
You dont want a 317 head on a 5.3. That is 6.0 head and is designed for 4.0 inch bore. It would loose a lot of compression on a 5.3 and run poorly. If you change cylinder heads only use 4.8 and 5.3 castings on 5.3 engines.
Always put dealers fuel pumps in no company aftermarket works.
