Much respect to Stavros for delivering a fair, non biased review, you can always count on him to give an honest opinion, be it good or bad. Very entertaining.
As a both MAN and DAF owner I mostly agree with you about the MAN. But not when you want a touchscreen and not smart select system. When you have learned the menu's it is much easier to use Smart Select then a touchscreen. Cause you feel the steps as you turn the two wheels on Smart Select, and you know exactly were you are in the system, without taking your eyes of the road. With touchscreen you have to take a look, just to be sure you hit the right spot on the screen.
The engine start/stop button on the door is a brilliant idea. Anybody who has tried to start the engine on a Volvo FH when the cab is tilted would be glad of this feature.
Stavros, great Sunday morning viewing as usual. It's more so a great, honest review. Why are they trying to re invent the wheel with them idiotic suicidal mirrors. In reality, what happens on a smart motorway if they go out?? Designers playing with people's lives. Had a Actros demo for a week with mirror cam took it back after 1hour not for me. Have a good week Stavros look forward to the next 😊 👌👍
Stavros is right on time for a great viewing on my sunday Arvo!! The sound of the MAN engine is a very nice sound. But that air noise even through my headphones drowned out Stavros. Another fantastic video Stavros. Keep them coming. 👍 From 🇳🇿. Cheers Stavros!!
i used to work on them too much tech which goes wrong as with most stuff today and they say this is progression it just makes it dealer only repairs and M A N parts are not the cheapest .
I think most drivers prefer normal mirrors and find it easier to judge with normal mirrors but as usual no one is bothered about the drivers opinions and if you have a knock because of these camera mirrors it’s always down to the driver as always.
If it lowers the fuel consumption by 0.01% they will force it. No matter what drivers want. It's all about fuel efficience and profits. Profits for both transport companies (if you save 1 liter every day for each truck and you have 200 trucks, it's 73,000 liters per year) and truck manufacturers that sell something that costs 50 and sell it 2000 (you can't sell a mirror for 2000)
That's the point. If you smash a mirror, you can pretty much replace it yourself. Sure, might struggle with the fancy, heated electric ones, but anyone can put up a truck mirror. If you smash up a camera, nobody's gonna even as little as dare touch it. So you go to MAN and throw the $$$ out.
@@bogdanrusgpisn't heated electric mirrors pretty much standard these days? It has been where I'm at for 20 years. I don't really think it's too hard to change the camera. Probably just a single plug and maybe a new arm. I suspect I might even be cheaper than the mirrors. A truck mirror isn't cheap! You can get a good camera for less than £50. Of course I don't know what MAN is charging for it.
My 09 Mack CHU613 gets 7.4-7.9 mpg pulling 120k lol... 18 spd tho. As far as digi mirrors, I like them as a supplement for straight on driving on in pouring rain but, you always need glass mirrors...
As an owner Driver. When choosing a truck, my main concern is Reliability & fuel economy, and driver comfort in that order. I am now on my third MAN. And to be honest I will not be changing as the MAN gives me all that I require. In your review You made several comments on the lack of Power. I cannot fully agree with your view on this. Yes there are more powerful Trucks out there, but if you drive the MAN using its Torque it will pull as hard as any other Truck with the equal power output. And the fact that I can travel with other more powerful Trucks on European Trips. When we stop after a four hour stint, I bet I am no more than 6 or 7 minutes behind them. What I will agree on is the Camara Mirrors. I would hope that you could speck a truck with proper Mirrors as I am not over keen on them. But maybe it just needs a bit of getting used to.
Like DAFs they feel very slow because they don't rev too high. They program the engine and gearbox to use torque and not power to be more efficient at fuel consumption.
The E mirrors in the Mercedes are just as bad. I wear reading glasses. Reversing is a nightmare. One side is fine the other a blur. Very grainy at best.
Was waiting for this one, best truck reviewer doing the "new" MAN :D Ive been a Scania fan forever, but since this truck came out in Euro Truck Similator 2 i have a new favorite ö
I drove a MAN bus here in Australia and even back then[2018] I noticed on a roundabout that the transmission was very slow to select the appropriate gear, it also fitted with the ZF transmission. I would have thought would have been in2024.
Good morning stavros It's funny how you demo the MAN with camera mirrors this week and my neighbour has been using one as his DAF was the bodyshop result of a flying rock, said exactly the same the camera mirrors are nowhere as good as what's on his Daf and was as he put it's a gutless wonder. Take care look forward to the next video, cheeeers
Gearing plays a big part in the performance I'd say. Also haven't heard a lot of good things about the Tipmatic transmission, although I've yet to drive one. I'd say Volvo's iShift and the Scania Opticruise are still the best automated transmissions in the truck world. Interesting review nonetheless. A colleague of mine drives a Mercedes Arocs with digital mirrors, he has just about the same complaints as you, with the addition of them taking up so much space on the inside they actually block the view past the "a-pillars" in the cab. They'll have to work on those things a bit more I feel. I'll keep rocking my trusty FMX a while longer. Nothing digital about it 😎
I drive an Aroc. Totally agree. The screens are big and picture is grainy. Can’t reverse without my reading glasses. They are after all a monitor not a mirror. I’d go back to glass if it was up to me
I drive a DAF XG+, occasionally switching to the XF F106, I must say sometimes I prefer the F106 simply because of all the new quirks and issues. DAF definitely has the gearbox issue resolved. Though I firmly believe this really also has to do with how the truck has been driven when it came off the line. The XG series overall seems much driver-directed by looking at this video and comparing it, sure, the MAN may have more powerful engine options but for comfort, I'd be quite happy with a DAF. I've also had several times the chance to drive a Mercedes Actros and Antos. I've found that Mercedes also struggles a lot with gearing and at low speeds has trouble finding the right gear, this is more noticeable with a heavier load. The interior of Mercedes though also feels way too plasticky. Good as a work horse, not as a comfort cab for long hauls. But thats more so my opinion.
Our logistics transportation company the 4th largest in Germany based in Hamburg, during the last board meeting, the comoany has rescinded all truck orders from MAN & Mercedes due to numerous technical problems encountered from this two Germany made particular brands and switched on by ordering additional 60 Volvo FH 16 750 & the latest V8 Scania S 700 series directly from Vabis Sweden. MAN is good only for industrial engines just like Mercedes. By the way, so many logistics transportation companies in Germany sued MAN and Mercedes at the Federal court in Bavaria. We do have zero technical issues with Volvo & Scania heavy duty trucks deployed to transport heavy steel coil directly from steel processing plant to Automobile manufacturing plants in the South, Northern and Western part of Germany. Volvo & Scania trucks are already sold out in Germany due to the higher constant demands.
Great review, I really do not like mirror cam systems, you cannot bob your head around to see things, the picture quality is crap and they are extremely expensive to replace if they get smacked and in a job where you are sent down very tight lanes to the back o'beyond that happens alot. Their main advantage is that they eliminate massive blind spots.
He doesn't make too many motorway miles. He is around a city with a lot of traffic and rush hours runs. Our FH460 Volvos pulling 43-44 tons all the time with 16'3'' high trailers make around 30l/100km on 700km on every shift
Lucky you have performance mode, our MANs have efficiency and efficiency + only, fully laden 44t they are so gutless joining a motorway and the biggest bugbear is the dashboard defaults back to metric everytime you turn of the ignition. So have to reset to imperial every time. Was told the display wasn't touchscreen because its out of date, its easier to use the rotary system to find what you need, yep I still struggling with that concept considering every other new truck has touchscreen
I work for Dublin bus we have video camera mirrors on our new fleet, takes a bit of getting used to, for night vision is fantastic, we have like the Mercedes half and half rather than fisheye
