- Eric repots a root over rock Japanese Black Pine and discusses the work it still needs while in middle development.
00:00:36 The stone is unusual in both shape and size from the rocks Eric typically gravitates toward. He collected it in far Northern California.
00:01:00 The tree has been growing in a colander for the past two years. You can learn more about it from this article Eric wrote a few years ago: www.bonsaify.com/blogs/phutu-.... It escape rooted through the container and ground cover, and has grown quickly.
00:01:51 Eric separated the tree from the ground to avoid compromising the quality of the finished bonsai.
00:02:40 Sawzall in action cutting through the bottom of the container!
00:03:37 Why to avoid ragged root edges.
00:04:20 This tree is still in middle development.
00:05:24 Eric continues cutting back the roots, removing topsoil to expose roots and rock.

It's not going to let go of that rock!! NICE!
You are very welcome Eric! you are easy to buy from your material is always better than average and ships fast and comes with bling. Who wouldn't love that!
Happened to stumble upon your channel a week or so ago. I must say, the way you explain each step, as it pertains to future development, is very insightful. Please keep the videos coming. They are both entertaining and appreciated. Also, I've given a look over your online store as well. Hope to purchase when the weather is a bit warmer. Cheers, mate.
That Nebari,
doing it's dance, nice 🌲
Very educational, I really dig seeing the early years of your trees.
Tnx Eric! Excellent review video before I tackle another ROR JBP...
The stone almost reminds me of an axe head. It is almost as if the black pine is attacking an axe to stop deforestation. Great looking piece. Thank you for sharing!
Hi sir, I have learnt so many things about bonsai from your channel and thank you for teaching us, from sri lanka 🇱🇰
I trust that you had a good new year.
Thanks for sharing. Cheers!!!!
Love the channel and all the material you sell. I’ve bought tons of trees from you and they all arrive in great health and continue to grow vigorously!
Thanks for sharing your experience and expertise.
Thanks David!
What will your regimen of fertilization for the next year and beyond. Also one type fertilizer or a blend?
Thanks Eric, great tree in the making
Looks great, nice video, do you also have some videos on how do you start black pines over rock. I tried a few times and I never seem to get them that tight up against the rock.
Yes, we did two recently - ruclips.net/video/CCFXYv2eUew/видео.html, and ruclips.net/video/QcFd0Qziu6Q/видео.html
@@Bonsaify Thank you!, those videos help a lot!, Have to wait until March in MA, and looking forward trying root over rock again.
hi man I was wondering how long it took to grow like this. and container grown or in the ground at first?
looks epic
I believe that tree is now in its around 9 years old. There is an older article on bonsaify.com about it here: www.bonsaify.com/blogs/news-and-more/improving-young-root-over-rock-pines
It was two when attached, then a couple years later I wrote that article. It's been in the blue colander 3 or 4 years, and for the two of those it was sitting on the ground and it escape rooted. Then I cut off the escape roots and repotted it. This past year it's grown well, but not quite as vigorously as before. I expect this year it will be quite vigorous since it's likely escaped again.
Nice pine over rock!
I am growing a black pine too at least three years, it chould have about five years old. I dont need to repot my pine this year, so when is the best time to change the sacrifice branch!?
Regards from Portugal.
Remove the sacrifice branch when the trunk (or section) you are fattening reaches the desired size. In terms of timing - start by reducing the sacrifice by half in fall, or decandle the sacrifice in summer and remove the rest in fall.
@@Bonsaify i will folow your directions!
Regards and thank you
hi what does the bottom of the new pot look like? is it a root trainer with a screen or does it have holes? hope you're fairing well on the Pineapple Express
It's an Anderson 17" propagation flat, so it has a mesh bottom. I used a 5/16" lava on the bottom to keep the smaller soil from falling through.
