  • This is a video for the 50th anniversary of the first flight of the C-2A Greyhound. The COD's first flight took place on 18 November, 1964. Since then, the aircraft and it's crews have supplied the carrier fleet with high priority logistics. This video shows some amazing insight into the mission of the COD as well as the challenge/thrill of flying the COD.

I was a VRC-50 C-1A COD crewman out of Cubi and Det Danang for 2 years while the C-2s were recovering from a stretch of bad luck in the early 70s. I remember Skipper Adkins at quarters one morning stressing how critical the C-2's role was - one Greyhound launched to Yankee Station carried the same load as four C-1's. The C-2 load masters and crew chiefs worked their butts off from chocks to launch and for some , the only crews rest they ever got after a 16 hour day was a quick nap on a pile of mail bags . They earned their flight skins the hard way...

Little different pace from the fighter jet community, more family like, least it was in my squadron.

it also looks like it's not fly by wire. I Always been wondered how some designs ends up being just best of the best. there is no substitutes. Even in our modern times many designs just works and have worked decades And new ones just aren't more effective. Itt apples in some naval designs also, not just planes. Plenty of great ship designs that we use still today, only improvements is some hightech lowfriction paint or dimpled surface to reduce drag, but basic design is easily over 150 years old in some cases. They just nailed it. Physics doesn't lie.

Otherwise I'd have been, all Whoo Hoo! Let's go around again! Actually, I might have said that, he was pretty pissed. Anyway, we trapped, caught the three wire. The crew was all Female VAW-110, pilot was a short little gal. long red hair, absolutely beautiful. I remember her very well; because she flew us an engine when we fodded one in Key West and flew an F-14 engine up to Cold Lake Canada, when VF-302 had an inflight issue. So really happy when I found out she was flying us out to the Nimitz.

Hello PropBroChill17! I’m The Planes/Dinosaurs Lover! I really love this video you made about the Grumman C-2A(R) Greyhound in 2014 for it’s 50th anniversary! About the Grumman C-2 Greyhound we know it was built in 1964 by Grumman (Now Northrop Grumman) with a production line going from 1964 to 1968 with a first batch of 34 C-2A Greyhounds, then from 1985 to 1991 the second batch of 54 C-2A(R) Greyhounds were built and they were upgraded from the original 4 blade propellers to the current 8 blade propellers from September 2006 to November 2015. But we know in February 2015 the U.S. Navy selected Boeing to build 72 CMV-22B Ospreys to replace the Northrop Grumman C-2 Greyhounds from 2020 to 2028. But in the plane’s history the original 34 C-2A’s served with 98 Grumman C-1 Traders until they were retired in 1991 with 19 C-1 Traders sold to Brazil with the current 54 C-2A(R)’s replacing them. With the 54 C-2A(R)’s were 39 Lockheed S-3 Vikings converted to the C-3 Viking standard which served from 1987 to 2012 when the S-3 retired from carrier service! Enjoy the information! Thanks!

These landings are all performed in the best conditions possible, and you can see the pilot making constant micro adjustments. My last active duty day...they carried me from medical to the flight deck and loaded me onto the COD. I was conscious when we catted off...but passed out during the flight. The COD off USS SARATOGA was just the first of several flights...and I spent the next six months in five Naval and Army hospitals. That was August 1992...flying me out of the Iraq area. 28 years later...I miss not being able to have stayed my 4th cruise and walked off the ship under my own power. I have spent the rest of my life fully disabled and living with what being Disabled Really Means. Physically, I can’t go aboard another carrier....but mentally I can still smell the flight deck...sometimes in my sleep I still hear the bow slam into the big waves, or heavy seas pounding the hanger bay doors. And God knows I fear the sound of silence in a pitch dark room....I wake up thinking the ship is sinking! When my dad came back from Vietnam...he was terrified of the dark...and would freak at sudden loud noises...I thought he was nuts. Now I do the same thing...in a few months I will be 60....and every time I wake up to the sound of thunder....I think the the ship has been hit...or there has been a crash on deck. Sorry...this video just opened a door and memories just flooded in. Guess I just needed to vent. Thank you for this video...and the chance to remember who I once was. My special thanks to all those COD pilots who flew the injured to safety. Who flew me to safety. And my special thanks to those who came after me to keep things going. Fair Winds and Following Seas....be safe...and good luck. Raven

I flew C-1A's on deployment for VR-30 (not VRC-30) in 75. Loved the mission. Love the COD. Best flying I did in the Navy.
The mission is about to change dramatically with the CMV-22B COD. No more "Roger Ball"; no more Tail Hookers. Seems a shame. But then VR--30 became VRC-30 and the C-1 became the C-2. Guess that is called progress. I have mixed feelings on this since I work for the lazy "B", the company that makes the V-22.

VERY nicely filmed. I enjoyed the close ups of the main gear in action. Most people just think of landing gear as the wheels on an aircraft, when in fact thy are some of the most brilliant engineering work that goes into any design.

Stunning footage PropBroChill17, nice to see some Grumman Iron in action! The fast movers tend to get more attention but they don't fly without COD, keep up the amazing work and safe flying!

Took a ride on the COD from North Island out to the Carl Vinson spring of 1988. Boltered on the first try, thought we were going in the water. I’ll never forget, not nearly as terrifying as the H-46 ride to the beach though.

I flew from Cubi Point to my ship, USS Ranger (CVA-61). I was an E-2 just out of boot. I remember that landing. It was like getting a boot in the butt. I'm a fairly rare black shoe in that I've trapped and flown off of a carrier. I've never forgotten either experience.

HardDriver3950 sister airframe to the E-2 Hawkeye, same wings, tail, engines, Cod uses a wider fuselage with a aft cargo door.

I am not sure I would call it 'purpose built'. It probably is technically. But, to me, 'purpose built' means it was designed from the outset for a task and was not a modification of an existing item. Since the Greyhound's wing's and power plant's are from the E-2 Hawkeye (and though the tails are different - the Greyhound's Hawkeye origin is pretty clear here as well), that disqualifies it to me as 'purpose built'. But, again, technically I am probably wrong.
But I agree it is a very unsung hero.
I imagine no single, aircraft arrival on a carrier means more to more crew members than when a Greyhound lands.
Thank you for this GREAT video. I really liked the music, as well.

Flew from Da Nang out to the Constellation Cva64 in 1972. It was on the old Cod model. Quite a trip and landing. Flew the whole coast south. What beautiful beaches and waters. Giles Jensen atr3 va147!!!

yes, I heard that saying "fighter pilots make movies" Attack pilots make history but those COD fellows keep up morale, supplies, invaluable personnel and intel. And they do it so quietly, faithfully and without any fan fare. God bless our Aviators.

I had an emergency at home when we were in the middle of the Med. The only way to get me home was a COD from the ship to Rota Spain, then to London then to the states. But I got a cat shot off the boat and to get me back got me a landing. That COD was old, beaten up, it shook, squeaked, rattled and smelled like sweat, vomit, piss and jet fuel. But I loved every minute. What a ride!
