I was a VRC-50 C-1A COD crewman out of Cubi and Det Danang for 2 years while the C-2s were recovering from a stretch of bad luck in the early 70s. I remember Skipper Adkins at quarters one morning stressing how critical the C-2's role was - one Greyhound launched to Yankee Station carried the same load as four C-1's. The C-2 load masters and crew chiefs worked their butts off from chocks to launch and for some , the only crews rest they ever got after a 16 hour day was a quick nap on a pile of mail bags . They earned their flight skins the hard way...

First trap was in a COD. Last CAT shot was in a COD. Bless the men and women of VRC-30 and -50, fellow RAG aviators with us Hawkeye crews. Pizza and newspapers. Great people. Wondering how soon it will be until the Navy wakes up and brings back the COD.

One of the most beautifully portrayed videos of COD operations. The visuals and the music just gives you a goosebump on the amount of things that go within the COD community and the greatness of the work that they perform. Much love and kudos to the COD of the US Navy. A big salute to your wonderful and heartfelt service. #LoveFromIndia 🇮🇳

Been there, done that! I was an FCPC on the C-1A's for VR-30 (just before our permanent San Diego Det became VRC-30.) I loved the aircraft, I loved the mission. Best flying I did in the Navy. This video brings back a lot of those memories. Thanks to whoever put this together.

Fun times, got my A&P License, out of the deal. The C-2 / E-2 is a great airframe, you're gonna enjoy it. Little different pace from the fighter jet community, more family like, least it was in my squadron.

Got the tour and watched launch and recovery of F-18s and S-3s from Vultures Row. A former Seabee electrician treated like a VIP. The Cat and Trap are to die for!!!! My last active duty day...they carried me from medical to the flight deck and loaded me onto the COD. I was conscious when we catted off...but passed out during the flight. The COD off USS SARATOGA was just the first of several flights...and I spent the next six months in five Naval and Army hospitals. That was August 1992...flying me out of the Iraq area. 28 years later...I miss not being able to have stayed my 4th cruise and walked off the ship under my own power. I have spent the rest of my life fully disabled and living with what being Disabled Really Means. Physically, I can’t go aboard another carrier....but mentally I can still smell the flight deck...sometimes in my sleep I still hear the bow slam into the big waves, or heavy seas pounding the hanger bay doors. And God knows I fear the sound of silence in a pitch dark room....I wake up thinking the ship is sinking! When my dad came back from Vietnam...he was terrified of the dark...and would freak at sudden loud noises...I thought he was nuts. Now I do the same thing...in a few months I will be 60....and every time I wake up to the sound of thunder....I think the the ship has been hit...or there has been a crash on deck. Sorry...this video just opened a door and memories just flooded in. Guess I just needed to vent. Thank you for this video...and the chance to remember who I once was. My special thanks to all those COD pilots who flew the injured to safety. Who flew me to safety. And my special thanks to those who came after me to keep things going. Fair Winds and Following Seas....be safe...and good luck. Raven

I loaded/unloaded Det 5 for 2 years on the Kitty Hawk, 1998-2000. 950 thousand pounds of cargo, 350 thousand pounds of pony, and over 4500 pax over that time frame.Det 5 took top hook one month on the 1999 cruise. :)

The C2A had a rocky start. I served in VRC-50 for 70 to 72. In the beginning we had problems with props coming off and lost a few aircraft. In Dec. 70 we lost a plane on a cat shot over the Gulf of Tonkin. This video brings back a lot of memories, good and bad!

I was in VRC-50 from 68-69 you must have come in when I was leaving. We lost one aircraft must have been 69 grounded all our aircraft can't remember what happened to it. I think a gear box froze up and lost a prop. Lost everyone I think there were14 people on board. George Sharp AME-3

    • @smithez1
      @smithez1 Год назад

I believe the initial problem grounding the C2A was resolved by installing a propeller synchronization system. The problem was the propellers passed too close to the fuselage which under certain conditions produced vibrations that weakened the gear box and prop shaft. I Got to the squadron after the problem was corrected.

Hello PropBroChill17! I’m The Planes/Dinosaurs Lover! I really love this video you made about the Grumman C-2A(R) Greyhound in 2014 for it’s 50th anniversary! About the Grumman C-2 Greyhound we know it was built in 1964 by Grumman (Now Northrop Grumman) with a production line going from 1964 to 1968 with a first batch of 34 C-2A Greyhounds, then from 1985 to 1991 the second batch of 54 C-2A(R) Greyhounds were built and they were upgraded from the original 4 blade propellers to the current 8 blade propellers from September 2006 to November 2015. But we know in February 2015 the U.S. Navy selected Boeing to build 72 CMV-22B Ospreys to replace the Northrop Grumman C-2 Greyhounds from 2020 to 2028. But in the plane’s history the original 34 C-2A’s served with 98 Grumman C-1 Traders until they were retired in 1991 with 19 C-1 Traders sold to Brazil with the current 54 C-2A(R)’s replacing them. With the 54 C-2A(R)’s were 39 Lockheed S-3 Vikings converted to the C-3 Viking standard which served from 1987 to 2012 when the S-3 retired from carrier service! Enjoy the information! Thanks!

it also looks like it's not fly by wire. I Always been wondered how some designs ends up being just best of the best. there is no substitutes. Even in our modern times many designs just works and have worked decades And new ones just aren't more effective. Itt apples in some naval designs also, not just planes. Plenty of great ship designs that we use still today, only improvements is some hightech lowfriction paint or dimpled surface to reduce drag, but basic design is easily over 150 years old in some cases. They just nailed it. Physics doesn't lie.

Otherwise I'd have been, all Whoo Hoo! Let's go around again! Actually, I might have said that, he was pretty pissed. Anyway, we trapped, caught the three wire. The crew was all Female VAW-110, pilot was a short little gal. long red hair, absolutely beautiful. I remember her very well; because she flew us an engine when we fodded one in Key West and flew an F-14 engine up to Cold Lake Canada, when VF-302 had an inflight issue. So really happy when I found out she was flying us out to the Nimitz.

@@smithez1 In ' 72, just a few months before EAOS I made ADR1 and got accepted to the TAR C-118 FE school at Alameda. Much as I loved every day of my 27 years, if I could do it all over again, I do believe I would have stayed in 50 for a few more years.

Amazing video of an unheralded workhorses for the US Navy! Most people don't understand the logistical support these planes have provided for such a long time! That was a well made video, music and footage were perfect for each other! Thank you!

Nice video, I had a chance to take off and land two times on a C1A from the USS Independence CVA-62. Those flight crews were top notch and kept us reading our mail, not to mention just about everything else. The C2A looks quite a bit wider and has that great drop ramp for easy loading and off loading. But it doesn't have the porthole windows on the side from what I could see. God Bless all flight crews and the men and women who keep them flying.

PropBroChill17 -So sorry for the loss of your squadron mate and friend, as well as two Ronald Reagan airmen. They are heroes and revered members of our Navy family! The fact that your fellow pilots were able to perform an open ocean ditching (w/possible engine failure) and save eight of the eleven souls aboard speak volumes about the skill, professionalism and courage of PROVIDER/ COD crews!
They are in the protective embrace of God now and as forever respected mariners in the court of King Neptune and Davey Jones. Bravo Zulu!

Brillian work. BZ! A nice stroll down memory lane for this old, retired COD bubba. I do miss flying hook-down. And working together as a team to accomplish something important. Nice to see "the kids" all grown up. Hotrod, out.

Flew from Da Nang out to the Constellation Cva64 in 1972. It was on the old Cod model. Quite a trip and landing. Flew the whole coast south. What beautiful beaches and waters. Giles Jensen atr3 va147!!!

The intersection of prop speed and video frames per second produces interesting propellers. These landings are all performed in the best conditions possible, and you can see the pilot making constant micro adjustments. It gives some of the feel of what it must be like in poor conditions of nasty weather, pitching deck coming up fast. I love what you guys do.

Yeah, the "rolling shutter" effect -- there are a number of interesting videos on YT about this for those interested.

The side windows are bubble shaped which just adds to the prop effect, especially where it curves more near the edge of the window's frame.
