I want to come back as a Grumman in my next life. These beautiful airplanes were coming out every day to my ship, USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14), back in '67 and that was a long, long time ago.
Worked on the 1st generation C2As both pre SLEP and Post SLEP...in VRC50 1978- 1981 and again on the 2nd generation at VAW120 1988 to 1992... Sure did enjoy those days
The Providers of VRC-30 Is the only C-2A Greyhound squadron I was not attached to in the history of the COD. I was at RVAW-110, VRC-50, VR-24, VRC-40, and VAW-120. I worked on almost every COD in the fleet both SLEP and Reprocurred. including the second prototype 148148. Sad to see the Mighty COD Going away.
Been there, done that. Flew aboard Nimitz off the coast of Sicily in one of these back in the early '80s. Left sea duty aboard Nimitz on one of these in mid-80s on my way to Panama to catch a flight back to Florida. Didn't do a cat shot though; started from the fantail.
Worked on E-2’s in Navy I would love to work on these C-2’s. Have worked cargo planes most of my life would be great to go full circle back to original airframe I started on.
Amazing. I worked with this bird years ago. 96-2000 Ol' Connie-CV64/VRC-30. She's still flying. Wow! Cool to see her accidentally/coincidently on RUclips
I really only have two things on my bucket list that I really want to do before I die. One of them is pulling 9+ g's in a fighter jet and the other is landing and taking off from an aircraft carrier in a C-2
Being launched from a C-2 is more thrilling than any rollercoaster ride. And from an ABE perspective, you worry that the Catapult is going to operate correctly.
04dakota I lived on P’cola Beach and used to see the Lexington everyday. Back then (89) you could even get your boat up close when she was in port. By the way, does anyone know if this plane throttles up like a jet in case it misses the wire?
They bare a striking resemblance to the B-25's used in the Dolittle raid of '42. In fact, they're probably distant cousins design-wise if I wasn't too lazy to look it up.
You are afraid but after it all goes wrong options are available. I'm a Brit. Our new large (OK not that large to you) carriers can only take F35s Boeing Ospreys and we are still hanging our airborne early warning radar in an inflatable bag out the side of helicopters. Wept the US Navy got rid of the worlds best fighter (Notionally) because of its cost per hour of flight time. Then they want to introduce new planes that cost the earth and have low reliability and availability. How on Gods earth can you not have a low cost replenishment aircraft for a catobar aircraft carrier? Osprey lift weight OK but no range, even if one is working. I curse the Us Navy but how did the Royal Navy forget that we had key personnel jumping out of Hercules to parachute into the ocean in the South Atlantic in 82 to join the fleet. Why can't you have a simple replenishment aircraft?
On the first landing, it appeared as if they caught the 4th arrestor cable. Is that sort of a bad thing? As far as I'm concerned they landed safely so it's all good.
A friend and I trapped aboard the Big "E" in the early 80's. We had gone to "A" school together which was actually TF-30 school in San Diego The second class to graduate. The COD crew attempted to get us to eat lunch prior to the flight. Lol. We were not that dumb! And they banked it at the break almost 120 degrees to get us to Ralph (joking) really well about 45 degrees at least! The arresting gear sounded like a loud Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz sound. We got an Ok 3! Of course they wanted to see if we puked but we outsmarted them. We were seated looking aft and could see sky thru a small opening as the cargo door was not completely raised up and we didn't eat prior. We are briefed on escaping thru the hatch and that opening became my second go to. You never know. It was kind of neat to have caught the wire and trapped as not everyone gets the chance. I did cruises on America, twice on E both about 8 months, Nimitz twice, and Connie. Retired early, brown shirt, and engine mech-a-nik. Also got a Helo ride on an H-3 off a supply ship off of Oman. Maybe the USS Sacramento in 84. That Helo had a hard landing on deck (loss of power) and I was ordered to get on it and fly to Masirah island which I flat out refused. It was getting dark and there were sharks in the water. But also, I mentioned those in charge that Helo required a hard landing inspection so I left the next morning for an uneventful 5 mile trip and then flew on to BIOT Diego Garcia in an Air Force C something or other and there we watched movies on the beach and got to drink beer and kick sand at the same time. Fun times!
Living at NAS North Island, San Diego right now. These things are annoying. I live in barracks closest to the air strip and there are days when they will have C-2's running for hours at a time just sitting on the ramp.
I know this is really late but no one answered you. They can absolutely hold a standard pallet in the back. Actually can even fit an engine for an f35 in there (I think there's about a quarter inch of clearance between it and the ceiling). To the boat we can carry up to 26 passengers or around 10,000lbs of cargo. Youd be surprised how much can get shoved in that cargo space.
it was wide enough for a pallet but very seldom used them, all cargo was put in a cage to withstand a launch and trap, when you go from stop to go in 3 seconds airborn anything lose would be like a trajectile inside the cargo area and all passengers and crew were in the aft of the cargo. it was the same dimension from behind cockpit to the ramp.
@@barringtonwilson4794 we loaded this actual aircraft with a jet engine for a helicopter. Is been 20 years so I forgot much details. Is amazing to still see this actual bird still flying. VRC-30!
Standard wooden pallet, sure it can. Although it will not fit a standard Airforce pallet. Although as another already stated we would breakdown all pallets and load each box in Tetris style inside of the cargo cage.
The US Navy needs a real, fixed-wing replacement for the C-2. A new airframe, upped engines. Hell, maybe make it sorta "stealthy" to sell it to the brass.
The ambient sounds of the hanger deck. I miss it and love to hear it again.

unsung Heroes these planes and drivers..thank you
I worked for Grumman from 1981-1994, and did work on the C2A COD, among other Grumman planes. Great to see this video, thanks.
I could watch these planes all day.
Love the power
I worked on and flew the C-1a CODs at VRC-40 and on the USS Nimitz CVAN-68 during 1973-1974. Never got to ride on a C-2. Loved my C-1a's.
AKA: COD - Carrier Onboard Delivery. They've been in service since the 1960s, over 50-years!

RVAW-110 Miramar. 👍 75-77
The mail plane = Most important plane in theater :-D
Excellent video! Both sound and videography are superior.

A conventional, rolling takeoff? I thought only STOL aircraft could do that on a carrier.
Worked on E-2’s in Navy I would love to work on these C-2’s. Have worked cargo planes most of my life would be great to go full circle back to original airframe I started on.
VAW-113!
I came here after the C-2 Greyhound Fighter Pilot Podcast interview. Great stuff. I love it.

Thanks Chad!
I was in vrc 50 from 78 to 80, they are some amazing aircraft.
3:14 strut it girl!
Is it no wonder why Grumman is known as 'The Iron Works' of naval aviation?
what a machine!!! great video! thanks
Man I love to listen to those engines.
And fighter pilots get all the glory. It can't be any easier landing this fully loaded behemoth than a Hornet
It's the hardest plane to land on the carrier. Cumbersome, and an 80 foot wingspan.
@@ItsMotoMatt I’m given to understand that the propwash over the wings gives them good lift response, though.
old but gold

That's one "tuff old bird"!

Welcome to today’s show of “why is this in my recommended”
Lteo Hrnt lmao get off the computer grandma.
it's the irony. an active game player may benefit from knowledge in the video. a NPC? not so much, lol
You ask why, but it's good content...
That's how I got off the USS Lexington in 83 that was very very cool

I was on Nimitz during its 2017 Tiger Cruise in NOV/DEC 2017. I wonder which of these C-2s delivered my son to CVN-68 earlier that summer?
Cat and Trap on the COD is better than any roller coaster anywhere......EVER
hey you got that right i did it for 18months straight on C2A as plane captain in VRC50
Love how the props look like video is in slow motion
The "guy" at 3:15 had a little switch in his walk.
odustbrown “he” is a she.
It's a she.
confirm..... she is he
Me encanto! wow
Ah, I was wondering if those could go into the ship's hangar because they seem so large. I hoped I'd see how one fits on the elevators.
поставил лайк вероятному противнику. потому что КРАСИВО!
Wow, the cargo area looks more cramped than I thought. It must be downright claustrophobic for crews on the Hawkeye.
I’m an little afraid about the Ospreys replacing the C2/C2A Greyhounds.

From what I've heard the Ospreys have more range but less cargo hauling capability.
89-91. VRC 40. Great days
FANTÁSTIC AIR FORCE from Brasil ok

Looks like fun
Heard they're replacing these with ospreys
yup
Today is Jan 21, 2021 and they're still flying Greyhounds out to carriers off both coasts of the USA.
...can u order things online from this Warship-I mean from Amazon,Flipcart etc.?
How do passengers get out when cold cat?
Those propellers are scary
So what happens during an EMP attack and you can no longer launch aircraft? Is there still a steam backup system?
Only the Ford class has those fancy cats. The Nimitz class are steam cats.
Amazing
whAt a wing mechanism
Badass Squids flying those birds
Is there a civilian version of this airplane?
no
What is the jet blast on the right side !?
it's a turboprop engine so it has an exhaust for the turbines
BOBOY VALIDA🌎🌍🌏🇵🇭💪🦅🇵🇸💪🦅
Imagine if Top Gun 2 WAS about Maverick flying cargo planes (this) filled with rubber dog s__t, when he gets called back into fighter pilot duty?

I cant imagine standing in front of those propellers. I'd force it upon the universe to have me somehow sucked in and turned into a bunch of mist.
Red mist, actually.
Love to see these COD's trap!
Anyone at VRC-30 From 95-99? North Island Coronado San Diego
What was that annoying clacking sound at the video end ?
That is the sound of the straps, buckles, cage parts, seats, and whatnot moving around and clanking against everything as the ship rocks in the waves.
She has a cute Wiggle in her walk @ 3:18....Take a look !!!
WAWWWWWWW
New sensation to hear female voice on the Nimitz, no such thing when I was aboard.

E2-D or rather the E2-E
cptnemo20kl I read there's proposal for turning remaining S-3B Vikings into COD with modifications; i.e. rear loading ramp.
the viking can never replace the C2Aor B they are capable of taking off on a deck launch fully loaded, a viking would go swimming.
did several pasture landings with them no runways just landed in a clearing
the vikings are older than the cod
Where's the beer 🍻 plane?
