I used this the other day and did a black backed multicolour spiral and black backed spider (with red/yellow as the other colours). They came out so well. Thank you for this excellent tutorial!
Excellent how you show the finished shirt and then do the folding in order to understand how the patterns form when dying! No one else has ever done that! Thank you.
Yes, try using more dye. Often you have to use more than you think! Also, if your shirt is too wet after the soda ash soak it can result it more white areas. Wringing the shirt out more before applying the dye will give you less white areas.
vondez redman wetting the shirt before dyeing makes it easier to fold and tie. The important thing is to wet it in a solution of Soda Ash (not just water). This is what makes the dyes permanent.
Spread baking soda on cookie sheet and bake it @ 250° for 45 mins. Quick and easy @ home soda ash. Be sure not to "burn" the baking soda....if it is brown after baking, then ya gotta toss it out
There is a way to fold that down the center that will make the symmetry a little better. On the second shirt you can see the left side is a little more crisp. When you just fold in half you have half the front on top and half on bottom. If you fold in half by pulling a sleeve in to other. You can have all the front right next to each other during dying. They will be equally crisp.
We call this effect "black-backed." It is achieved by dyeing one side of the tied shirt black. This particular one was dyed turquoise on one side (blue) and black on the other. Because of how the shirt is tied, this produces alternating black and blue stripes.
Katusha Cornwall once you have applied the dye to fabric that has been pre-soaked in a soda ash solution, wrap it in plastic to keep it wet and let it sit for up to 24 hours.
I got the jacquard kit and followed the instructions and did not get these results at allll. The color washed out of the creased like areas after washing. Is the dye used in the kits different?
Melissa MacKnight that is strange. Please contact us and we can help you figure out what is going on. Email service@jacquardproducts.com or call 800-442-0455.
Thankyou for these tutorials, I've learnt loads thanks to you guys. But I've had a few goes at the black backed spider print and keep getting on quarter of the tee (if you get me) has practically no black on it. What's the easiest way around this? So far I've only tried reverse tying anddying it a second time, which works but takes away from the intricacy, thanks
You should make a video that goes over every detail in tie dying. Ex: How to mix colors properly and how to use soda ash. Please do so it would really help.
hi, these look GREAT! I was wondering, how does the shirt look from the back? Does it look black, or does the rainbow color appear on both sides of the shirt?
Hamsta 100% cotton PFD ("prepared for dyeing") shirts work best. We get ours from Dharma Trading Company: www.dharmatrading.com/clothing/clothing-and-dyeables-from-dharma-trading-co.html
+Laura magalhâes We use Jacquard brand Procion MX dyes: jacquardproducts.com/procion-mx.html and Jacquard brand Tie Dye Kits: www.jacquardproducts.com/funky-groovy-tie-dye.html
The shirts look almost exactly the same on front and back. Black-backing does not mean the back will be black; it is a method of applying the dyes to produce black stripes!
Sounds like you didn't get the Jacquard Kit. Our kits are available at Michaels--just look for the Jacquard logo. www.jacquardproducts.com/funky-groovy-tie-dye.html www.jacquardproducts.com/large-tie-dye.html
To achieve a deep, dark black color, use Jacquard Procion MX dyes, and be sure to use soda ash, as directed. www.dickblick.com/products/jacquard-procion-mx-fiber-reactive-cold-water-dye/
when mixing other dyes other than MX dyes, forget about the directions on the package. Use half or 1/3 the amount of water the directions call for. Then let them sit on the color side rather than what is in the video. Mine sit for qat least 72 hours. When I soak after 72 hours, in salt and vinegar,I let em soak for a few hours. Then I rinse and wash with a bonding agent I get at the craft store that helps the fiber hold the dye through the wash . I forget the name of this bonding agent BUT it is the most important thing I have added and my dyes are retaining more color then ever before. It's fairly cheap and a little bottle for 5 bucks gets me 3 or 4 wash cycles.
Alejandro Gonzales it makesa huge difference what dyes you use, if you use the cheap kits like tulip or whatever it will always come out super faded no matter ho much dye you use, get procion mx or other pro dyes they're worth it
Soda Ash is a fixative for fiber reactive dyes: www.jacquardproducts.com/soda-ash.html You dissolve it in water and soak the fabric in the solution for at least 15 minutes before dyeing. This is what will make the colors permanent.
I noticed that the first black-backed spiral and symmetrical spiral that was shown in the video had black in them that was so deep. Yet, the picture of the T-shirt at the very end of the video that displayed the "final product" didn't have blacks as deep as the two in the beginning of the video. It's been a few years since I've tie-dyed and I've never experimented with black in tie-dye but want to use Jacquard's black die to create something similar to these designs. (That's actually how I found this video.) How do I create black in my designs as deep as the black in the two T-shirts shown in this video? Should I use more soda ash for T-shirts that will involve black die? Was the black just not as rich in the picture because of the camera/flash used to take the picture? I'd greatly appreciate a response. The T-shirt will more than likely be made soon, so understanding what I'll need to do in order to design properly is crucial. This pattern is dying to come out of my head! Thanks!
ECV the differences in the depth of blacks has mostly to do with the way the shirts were photographed. That said, when tie dyeing with black, you want to use more dye powder than you do with the other colors. The black dye should be more concentrated, in other words. You also want to give the color plenty of time to fix after application--after dyeing, keep the fabric wet and in a warm place (like on top of a refrigerator) for 12-24 hours. Using urea in the dye solution can also help, as it will keep the dye wetter longer, resulting in deeper color (www.jacquardproducts.com/urea.html).
jacquardproducts Thanks for the help! I appreciate it. I'll keep everything you've said in mind and do a few trial runs after I buy the Jet Black dye before I make my design.
christopher morris Yes, it is pre-soaked in Jacquard Soda Ash. This is part of what makes our colors so much more permanent and vibrant than competiting brands!

’m watching in 2020. I’ve watched dozens of videos and your video is the best!!!!

Bobby Gene Tummolo Yes, they do. Watch Mr. Tie Dye. He’s great. This one is too. 😁
Thank you for sharing and teaching I appreciate it alot.....its beautiful....
It can be purchased at most art stores or even pool supply companies.

is soda ash similar to baking soda ?
Similar but not the same. Stick to Soda Ash when tie dyeing for best results!
R these colors procion or some others r they available in Mumbai India
Spread baking soda on cookie sheet and bake it @ 250° for 45 mins. Quick and easy @ home soda ash. Be sure not to "burn" the baking soda....if it is brown after baking, then ya gotta toss it out

Thank you so much for your instructional videos!💕
The soda ash is required. It's what makes the dye bond to the fabric so the colors won't wash out.
Awesome work

Hey good video I just wanted to know how long do I leave the dye to set before washing it out?
Katusha Cornwall once you have applied the dye to fabric that has been pre-soaked in a soda ash solution, wrap it in plastic to keep it wet and let it sit for up to 24 hours.
It is a powdered fabric dye called Procion MX that you mix with water.
I got the jacquard kit and followed the instructions and did not get these results at allll. The color washed out of the creased like areas after washing. Is the dye used in the kits different?

Aleksa Filipovic The back will look just like the front
Thank u so much :)
Also what do you do after, like what is your washing technique?
Melissa MacKnight ruclips.net/video/ZOBCSVLsW6c/видео.html
For the two spider folded ones did you just put one colour on either side
Yes, Frenchie-_-, That's right!
I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE THE BACK OF THE TEE ALSO! GOOD VIDEO, THANKS.
how do i do this if i just wanted the black stripes of that spider pattern? please, help.
hi, these look GREAT! I was wondering, how does the shirt look from the back? Does it look black, or does the rainbow color appear on both sides of the shirt?
When you make the spider design, do u dye one side black and the other side red?
At 2:48 or the blue shirt did you also cover the back with black or how did you do it.
Does the back work with any color or is it best to stick with black?
the blue and black spiral she shown looks really cool.
I want to know how she did it
Kirstin Phillip she literally showed you in the video

thx :) because when i dye regular white shirts they seem to fade

is the soda ash a MUST or is it optional
i live in a town where soda ash isnt available. what should i use instead?
how do you get the design for the blue and black one ?
I just got a kit from Michaels the the directions said nothing about soaking it in soda ash... Where can I get it?

@JacquardProducts can you make a video that really goes into detail. Showing viewers how to soak and mix dyes.
Joseph McDonald We use Jacquard brand Procion MX dyes: jacquardproducts.com/procion-mx.html
So the black backed shirt looks the same on both sides?
It's just like a spiral. She's not doing peace signs or anything.
how do you get the black so dark? when I did it it came out mostly grey, is it because I didn't use the soda ash maybe? or the dye I'm using?
To achieve a deep, dark black color, use Jacquard Procion MX dyes, and be sure to use soda ash, as directed. www.dickblick.com/products/jacquard-procion-mx-fiber-reactive-cold-water-dye/
