@Alfred Thaddeus Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
So what happens when you plug two laptops together over USB-C? Will they try to charge each other, or is the protocol smart enough to figure out if the devices should receive charging or deliver charging based on the circumstances?
So in summary, currently a USB-C connector can be: USB 2.0, USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen 1), USB 3.1 (USB 3.1 Gen 2), thunderbolt 3 x4 40Gbit or thunderbolt 3 x2 20Gbit.
myrang3r So I'm confused. Is USB type 3.1 Gen 2 as good as Thunderbolt 3 x4 40GBit? Or is Thunderbolt better than the Gen 2? Can both do the same thing?
That's the problem with the new USB Type C port. I think that people got used to the idea that the physical appearance of the port correlated with abilities. So a VGA port was for video, HDMI was for digital video and USB ports were for peripherals. But at the moment, the same physical port can have so many subtly different features behind it, it's honestly a pain. I knew about the USB transfer speed differences (5 vs 10Gbs) but didn't know there were differences within Thunderbolt 3 too. Nevertheless, I am hoping that after the transitory period we are in, Thunderbolt 3 will become more ubiquitous. I'm really excited about the prospect of having an office at work where all I have to do is plug in a single Thunderbolt 3 cable my monitor into my laptop to not only charge my laptop but also connect it to peripherals such as mouse, keyboard, printer and hard drives, which would be connected to the monitor. As things are right now, settling in with my laptop or taking it with me is such a chore. So I have a very specific use-case in mind for Thunderbolt 3 and it is a feasible one, but might take a few years before it can happen, once all the dust has settled.
Thanks for an awesome and informative video! This just goes to show how much room for improvement there is for tech companies to simplify and name things in ways that the average person can understand!
My laptop has USB C Gen 1 which you said is the same as USB 3.0 (3.1 Gen 1). So I can't use it to use as a display output, right? I don't want to waste money buying USB C dongle that my laptop doesn't support :(
Hi Lisa, could you please do a video on how to install USB Type-C into a desktop front panel? I cant find anything explaining how we are meant to do this for the latest motherboards.
so... i keep reading most laptops say "this usb c port is for charging" but can you charge your laptop through the other usb c ports (especially if they are thunderbolt 3)
Thunderbolt 3, contrary to TB 1 & 2, is officially supported by Microsoft. One of the best use of Thunderbolt is for music production, with Thunderbolt audio interfaces, which will offer the lowest latencies and the best throughtput (as good as PCIe). Most TB audio interfaces on the market today are TB 2, and let's hope producers won't take too many years to offer native TB3 audio interfaces. But, because of the TB3 support of Windows 10, the best solution to use a TB2 audio interface on PC isn't a PC with TB2 support, but it is to have a TB3 compatible PC, and a good TB3 to TB2 adapter!
Very clear video (thank you) except for one thing: when you say you can't recharge via usb c any pc with an high wattage charger. Why should it be impossible? I can understand it would take a lot of time, but I don't see any physical limit in that.
What happens if you connect two devices that can charge and be charged via USB-C together? Like, just as an example, there are some phones (like the recent ASUS Zenfone 3 Zoom) that can act as a power bank and charge other devices, what happens if you plug those for instance, into a laptop? Or plug two Zenfone 3 Zooms together? Or even just two USB-C supporting laptops together? Who's charging who then?
MightyTofu I think the one that is off will be charched and the one that is on will charge the divice that is connect to too. That the way power banks with usb c works. Turn on the power bank it will charge a device via usb c. Connect the powerbank too usb c when it is off and the powerbank will be charged.
That depends on a feature known as USB Power Delivery (PD). For this to work , both devices (charger and recipient) must handshake and agree on power delivery endpoints, and this particular feature is lacking in virtually all gaming laptops, ie you won't be able to charge it via Type C connector.
The exception to this rule are Macs: If you have type C on it , you also have Power Delivery (PD) enabled. For these systems, if you're considering a type C hub, get one with the pass through Power Delivery port so you don't lose charging capabilities.
The only thing I am interested in it is graphics output. It seems there are cheap (under $10) USB-C (thunderbolt) to DVI adapters on eBay. Is there any such adapter with a thunderbolt port so that I can daisy-chain 2 regular DVI monitors?

It would be a good thing to tell us whether we can insert a USB type C peripheral to a thunderbolt port (does thunderbolt entail usb type c)? I kind of figured out that the opposite is not possible so, we can not use usb type c ports for thunderbolt devices. But I am still curious about the possibility of thunderbolt ports supporting usb c..

Even exceeding the 5 minutes, that's fifteen minutes of content in an eight minute bucket. So very information dense! I feel a little more informed, but like I need to go away and process all of this. I'd definitely like a longer and more detailed video on the same topic. One that really gets into the nitty gritty of the function of each connector, why a device maker might choose one over another, and why a consumer would care.
I sometimes have to watch videos twice to catch or understand all of what is presented. I watched a very good 45 minute long video on how to configure your home lan network. But now I have all those steps in a nice email I sent myself for future reference.

That is all good to know about USB C vs Thunderbolt 3 ,,, ,but ,,,, Can be charged Laptops that have USB Type C (3.1-3.2) ??? or only if it is with Thunderbolt 3...
Your explanation is great but just to be sure that I am on the same page as you are, I have the following question: 1. USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 (on Lenovo Yoga C740) means it can be used for data delivery with 5 Gbps + Power Delivery + Display Port (if specified)? 2. And had it been USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 (let's say on some laptop) means it can be used for data delivery with 10 Gbps + Power Delivery + DisplayPort (if specified)?
Very good video but there is STILL A LOT of confusion. On Amazon there are sellers (3rd party) that are advertising their USB-C cables as USB-C Gen 2 cables. In this video I learned that USB-C is just the shape of the connector, but the standard is in the port you are connecting it to. But these Amazon listings (I'm sure elsewhere too) make it sound like its the cable that is determining the capability of the speed. That's the most confusing thing about this all as a consumer. I see sellers listing their cable as having an "E-marker chip" in it and saying that's "USB 3.1" while other sellers are selling "USB-C 2.0" cables and they are often cheaper. Furthermore you have someone like Benson Leung (a google USB-C engineer) saying that there are in fact two different kinds of USB-C cables seen here: plus.google.com/+BensonLeung/posts/HBWyVBmdVzw This is not explained in your video and is critical to teaching people and having them understand this mess that is USB-C. If your device has a USB 3.1 port (Gen 1 perhaps) you should probably be buying a USB-C cable that uses all the features of USB 3.1. If you were to buy just any USB-C cable (a USB-C 2.0 cable) even though the connector is the same (the USB-C standard) the wiring of it prevents you from fully utilizing the USB-3.1 standard. Consumers, when they go online are looking for the cheapest USB-C cable that they can find, and the USB-C 2.0 cables are the cheapest that will appear. Lastly, according to Benson (in the link above) a USB-C 3.1 cable is completely backwards compatible with USB-C 2.0. So if you have a device that uses USB-C 2.0 (lets say like one of those car chargers with USB-C Power delivery.. yayyy more confusion!) you can simply buy a USB-C 3.1 cable and it will operate at USB-C 2.0 operation. But that same cable can be used for all the benefits of USB-C 3.1. It makes that cable more versatile. The problem comes when looking at two USB-C cables and trying to differentiate the two! haha! The solution according to Benson is that the USB-IF (the compliance organization that creates USB-C) mandates that these USB 3.1 cables display a SuperSpeed USB Trident logo on the top of the connector with the "SS" designation written on it like you see on all modern day laptop ports when looking at USB ports. But lets add more confusion... the USB-IF actually names these cables "USB Full-Featured Type-C cables" rather than "USB 3.1 cables" but I don't see all sellers calling it that. If this info helps someone, give it a thumbs up. I literally wasted HOURS today trying to fully understand this... and I'm a computer power user. I never fully understood the USB-C standard until today.
I think you added confusion regarding your rant about USB-C 2.0 cables. There is no such thing. When USB was on the 2.0 standard, the C connector had not been invented yet. We were still using the traditional A type or the A to B type cables. To your credit, it is possible some vendors were incorrectly calling their cables 2.0 when they meant Gen 2. Gen 2 and 2.0 are not the same. And if there was indeed a vendor who was so ignorant about such details and the differences, I would stay far away from their products.
Need help here.. I have asus zenbook ux433 that has usb-c gen 2, its not thunderbolt and you cant charge the laptop through it.. its just an usb and I need a hub for it.. but every hub i found is for thunderbolt and it has power passtrough.. does anyone know where i can find a hub for normal usb c.. not thunderbolt????
Hi Lisa. I'm referring to 4'00'': Having check many hub/dongle USB Type-C no-Thunderbolt 3, to me it looks like all of them can support 4k 30Hz, not 60Hz, monitor; more, only via HDMI, since no one of them has a DisplayPort. It looks like if I want to drive a 4k 60Hz monitor, I'll need to buy a Thunderbolt 3 dongle. Could you you help me to clarify this? Thanks.
Thanks for having this review. I just have a question though. Does the USB type C 3.2 Gen 2 supports video/audio when connected to a TV thru usb-hmdi adapter?
i'm considering getting a thunderbolt 3 to two displayport 1.2 ports adapter so i'll be able to drive three 4k displays together with the displayport output on my laptop. I am unsure if the thunderbolt 3 port can send two displayport 1.2 signals and whether it is pcie 2 lanes or 4 lanes. My cpu is a core i7-8550U with intel UHD graphics 620.
8ish mins, because that's what it takes to explain all the tech for this episode... That's why we watch you, love you and support you, Lisa. Keep it up this way! P.S. "* minutes of tech" for a title, just to keep some of the trolls happy ;)
does anyone know if I can add a thunderbolt pci card to a Gigibyte AM3 970 SLI gaming MB ? I need it for an external sound card for music production. It's frustrating ,I cant seem to find any answers anywhere ...
My dream goal is to run 2 or 3 OS's without dual or triple booting but instead on discrete drives (which I'm doing now but always need to open the case and plugging and unplugging drives to shut off the drives not in use). Unfortunately most desktop computers (I don't use a laptops) won't let you boot from an external drive. I presume the main reason is the low transfer rates. Does Thunderbolt 3 have any way to run external drives to turn off say 2 out of out of 3 external enclosures and boot off the one with the OS you want to use? That way I wouldn't have to have them all running all the time internally or open the case to plug and unplug that I'm doing now? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Are we moving forwards with these upgrades? I feel like I've been living in the stone ages with my old macbook pro from 2012. It had a bunch of different ports like Ethernet, 2 USB ports, a display port, SSD. Now I have to buy separate accessories to replace these ports? Feels like a step backwards. Unless you can run multiple things with one wire like ethernet, charging, external storage? I'm still doing research on these things and I'm feeling really old (I'm 22 BTW!!!)
thanks, very helpful. I have one usb type-c 3.1 (data transfer only port) in my laptop. I want to use this port to connect en external monitor. could you please suggust me a correct Type C to HDMI adaptor or hub?
Hello, i have the Acer Swift 7 (1st gen) and i tried to charge it with a Aukey 30 000 Mph power bank battery but there is a problem where the laptop wont even recognize that it is pliged in either with a usb-c to usb-c or to the Power Bank or usb-c to usb-a to the power bank. Is it possible that the problem is coming from the ports on the laptop or some software since i tried multiple types of cables as well. Is there any suggestions that i can try to fix that ?
Hi LIsa, I've got a new Razor Blade Stealth (love it), but want a USB C dock/hub so I can plug it into a monitor/keyboard/mouse with one cable that also charges. THe Razor Core looks great, but is way too expensive for me. There are loads of products promising what I want, but compatibility seems really hard to work out! Any chance of a video?!
Hi,Can u tell me what usb c adapter to buy to hook up my I pad 2 to a Samsung 4K monitor model u32r591cwn . All the ones I viewed say for iPad 2019 or 2020 I Pad models. Mine is I pad Pro 2. Thank you I would appreciate it! 🌸🌸🌸
In the Specs of Dell XPS 13 (6th gen cpu, AC charger, refurb) it says "Thunderbolt™ 3 supporting: Power in/charging, PowerShare, Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps bi-directional):" Can I charge this device with a flagship USB-c charger?
thank you lisa, this video cleared up SOME confusions i have but i have ONE question. If im understanding correctly usb-c gen1 was previously known as usb-c 3.0?
You forgot to clarify if it's possible to simultaneously charge your laptop from USB-C and power supply at the same time! Could that be achievable? I just bought a 165w adapter for my Aorus which use originally a 200w charger. I'm wondering if I could add an additional 15w through the USB-C to get at least 180w in total (this actually give me a much more compact setup)
@@GeminiMaddnezz864lyfe it's silly regardless, if there were such a thing as a visual learner the person should be great at visualizing what was told. Unless they were bad with words or something.
Lisa hopefully you will read this: Could you please name 5 laptops with touchscreen that I can use with the Samsung note pen? I always use them together, laptop plus phone plus note pen but my laptop is getting old. Thanks!
Hello, thanks this was informative. Does this mean that it’s possible to use a USB 3.1 Gen 2 SSD to work with Thunderbolt 2 hosts via a Thunderbolt 3 (Type -C) adapter without sacrificing the practical speed described for USB 3.1 Gen 2 prototcol or any other for that matter ?
Great explanation. This is quite a great channel discussing different types of product and the video quality is very good. Honest and very relevant reviews. Certainly one of the best tech channels of youtube!
I am trying to find an Android based 10.1" tablet with either a FULL SIZE SDHC (NOT microSD!) slot and/or a USB-C port that can download and upload photos (i.e., data). Suggestions? IS there any such thing?!
hey Lisa, how can I tell which devices have the correct usb-c ports to allow video in... ultimately I'd like to be able to turn a Windows tablet into a cintiq or dell canvas by sending video from my laptop into the Windows tablet through usb -c . thank you
On the topic of USB-C reversibility: I have a four port USB-C hub that will only be recognized by my DELL XPS 9365 if it's plugged in one way. Turned over and reinserted, it won't be recognized and it won't transmit power or data. Go figure that one out!
Great information! How many of these Thunderbolt 3 docks can I connect to my 2016 Macbook Pro with 4 Thunderbolt 3 Ports and what are the maximum number of 1080 or 4k monitors can I connect while maintaining 60 Hz refresh rates? I need many monitors for my work.
What acer predator is that? I have a helios 300 (GTX 1060, 8300H version) but it only supports usb c 3.1 gen 1. Also, as far as i understood, the differences between usb c gen 1, gen 2 and thunderbolt are the amount of connections that are physically implemented and their layout on the side of the host device, is that correct? Edit: would it be possible to support thunderbolt if you swapped the connectors on the host device or would that also mean physical changed to the motherboard must be made (aka those connection lines that are printed into the pcb)? Thanks in advance!
Good video. I am curious about the USB C charging though. For example I have a 2016 Razer Blade Pro and my wife has a Razer Blade Stealth (Kaby Lake). Hers of course has a USB C charger from Razer but say she forgot it at home could she use her USB C phone charger? I know it would be way under powered, but could it slow charge it? I mean in theory you could have a portable solar panel and plug that in and charge as well. Granted it may take a week to charge, but I guess I am just curious is there something I am overlooking to have this as an "overnight slow charge" option? In regards to the Razer Blade Pro I can not get an answer from Razer at all that say if I forgot my 240W charger, could I borrow my wifes Razer 45W USB C to again slow charge it? I asked Razer and of course their answer was "we are not sure, but please look at all of our charger options for sale". I know it is a bit of an odd question that won't apply to many but we fly long haul quite a bit and even sipping 5W USB power from the plane charging port could give us that much more time with our devices. Thanks and keep up the reviews, I have to say when it comes to no nonsense to the point honest reviews I rank your channel the highest.
Hi, Is USB C compatible with Thunderbolt? Can we connect an Apple iPad Pro on one side and Thunderbolt device like Black Magic Recorder Studio on the other end of the same cable. Please Advice. Thanks and Regards.

great video!! my notesbook has USB 3.1 TYPE-C gen1/DP 1.2 port. Can i use any USB-C to Displayport adaptor/cable to have 4k/60hz or it must be a Gen1 usbc adaptor? thanks!!
I like the way you make things clear. To non tech person or semi tech it would be of HUGE value to offer a visual display of what you are saying, maybe split screen. And something someone can screen shot for later remembering. Gave you a thumbs up and would give you 2 thumbs up with some visuals. I find so few you tubers are doing this. There are auditory, tactile and visual learners. A visual display allows time for people to integrate the information. Thank you.
Thunderbolt ports can run audio digital interfaces for music production, that previously were known as FireWire, but needs an adapter. They pass digital audio and midi

Furthermore you have someone like Benson Leung (a google USB-C engineer) saying that there are in fact two different kinds of USB-C cables seen here: plus.google.com/+BensonLeung/posts/HBWyVBmdVzw
This is not explained in your video and is critical to teaching people and having them understand this mess that is USB-C.
And if there was indeed a vendor who was so ignorant about such details and the differences, I would stay far away from their products.
is there some sort of thunderbolt 3 NAS or storage/backup solution you can recommend?
Can we use usb c to usb 3.0 to connect razer core to any laptop?
Why are Thunderbolt 3 to PCIe adapters so expensive (eg for eGPU)? Are they gonna get much cheaper?
So what's the USB C version in my Thinkpad x270 ?
8ish mins, because that's what it takes to explain all the tech for this episode... That's why we watch you, love you and support you, Lisa. Keep it up this way!
P.S. "* minutes of tech" for a title, just to keep some of the trolls happy ;)
Even if you say 5 minute'ish, that might settle down the trolls a bit.
Office work can be so boring. I’m under pressure. The man will never ever get me down!!!
does anyone know if I can add a thunderbolt pci card to a Gigibyte AM3 970 SLI gaming MB ? I need it for an external sound card for music production. It's frustrating ,I cant seem to find any answers anywhere ...
Lisa, can you do a video like this, but one that discusses the best configurations for a laptop or if we want to build our own desktop?
Thanks
Lisa can u pls help....The only question is can we charge that predator using thunderbolt 3.....with USB C cable
your face reminds me of my cute grandmother who passed away recently. i can watch your videos all day.
can i connect a usb c hub in my awr17 thunderbolt port??
Can I connect a 144hz Monitor with usb c Thunderbolt 3 to Displayport cable from my Msi GS63 Gaming Notebook or I only need normal usb c ?
Thank you for your help. Could you please confirm if thunderbolt 3 cable are the same for both windows and mac?
Hello, i have the Acer Swift 7 (1st gen) and i tried to charge it with a Aukey 30 000 Mph power bank battery but there is a problem where the laptop wont even recognize that it is pliged in either with a usb-c to usb-c or to the Power Bank or usb-c to usb-a to the power bank.
Is it possible that the problem is coming from the ports on the laptop or some software since i tried multiple types of cables as well.
Is there any suggestions that i can try to fix that ?
Hi LIsa,
I've got a new Razor Blade Stealth (love it), but want a USB C dock/hub so I can plug it into a monitor/keyboard/mouse with one cable that also charges. THe Razor Core looks great, but is way too expensive for me. There are loads of products promising what I want, but compatibility seems really hard to work out!
Any chance of a video?!
How do i know if my laptop has thunderbolt or usb c. There is a tiny port in my laptop
So I can charge my acer swift 3 using the usb c with a power bank?
Hey Lisa, Can I use a Galaxy S8 charger to charge my lenovo yoga 720 13 inch?
In the Specs of Dell XPS 13 (6th gen cpu, AC charger, refurb) it says "Thunderbolt™ 3 supporting: Power in/charging, PowerShare, Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps bi-directional):"
Can I charge this device with a flagship USB-c charger?
thank you lisa, this video cleared up SOME confusions i have but i have ONE question. If im understanding correctly usb-c gen1 was previously known as usb-c 3.0?
i have yoga720, can i use thunderbolt 3 usb type c to connect it to my tv
You forgot to clarify if it's possible to simultaneously charge your laptop from USB-C and power supply at the same time! Could that be achievable?
I just bought a 165w adapter for my Aorus which use originally a 200w charger. I'm wondering if I could add an additional 15w through the USB-C to get at least 180w in total (this actually give me a much more compact setup)
As a visual learner, I would really appreciate some sort of diagram for future videos like these.
There is no such thing as a visual learner. There is zero science that supports it.

You are running at an upload speed of 28 gbps. I almost couldnt keep up. Bravo!
i was completely lost. Not sure if the one on my lap top is thunderbolt 2 or 3
Lisa hopefully you will read this: Could you please name 5 laptops with touchscreen that I can use with the Samsung note pen? I always use them together, laptop plus phone plus note pen but my laptop is getting old. Thanks!
Hello, thanks this was informative. Does this mean that it’s possible to use a USB 3.1 Gen 2 SSD to work with Thunderbolt 2 hosts via a Thunderbolt 3 (Type -C) adapter without sacrificing the practical speed described for USB 3.1 Gen 2 prototcol or any other for that matter ?
Can you demystify USB-C cables for Android Auto? Does it need Gen 1 or Gen 2? Is there a way to be sure you're getting a cable that will work? Thanks.
Can a dell Latitude 7490 be charged via usb c?? I don't understand? can I use my anger 30w car usb c charger to charge latitude 7490 in the car?
Great information! How many of these Thunderbolt 3 docks can I connect to my 2016 Macbook Pro with 4 Thunderbolt 3 Ports and what are the maximum number of 1080 or 4k monitors can I connect while maintaining 60 Hz refresh rates? I need many monitors for my work.
Did you make a review video about Dell Inspiron 5559 coz I can't seem to find it...
Thanks and keep up the reviews, I have to say when it comes to no nonsense to the point honest reviews I rank your channel the highest.
i just bought a laptop which is HP x360. i only have usb 3.1 gen 1. can i use an adapter to charge my usb c smartphone?
Will a Thunderbolt 3 hard drive work on my USB-C computer?

Hi,

Can we connect an Apple iPad Pro on one side and Thunderbolt device like Black Magic Recorder Studio on the other end of the same cable.

my notesbook has USB 3.1 TYPE-C gen1/DP 1.2 port. Can i use any USB-C to Displayport adaptor/cable to have 4k/60hz or it must be a Gen1 usbc adaptor? thanks!!
I'm back again to refresh my memory on this confusing subject. GO LISA!
SO it's an HDMI, charging, and data transfer cable all in one, in short. Right?
I like the way you make things clear. To non tech person or semi tech it would be of HUGE value to offer a visual display of what you are saying, maybe split screen. And something someone can screen shot for later remembering. Gave you a thumbs up and would give you 2 thumbs up with some visuals. I find so few you tubers are doing this. There are auditory, tactile and visual learners. A visual display allows time for people to integrate the information. Thank you.
Hi, what mic is that you're wearing?
An oddly confusing topic, but this helped clear some things up. Thanks!
Can MacBook 12 2017 run 4k at 60hz on external display ?
Thunderbolt ports can run audio digital interfaces for music production, that previously were known as FireWire, but needs an adapter. They pass digital audio and midi
so can USB-C Gen 1 output HDMI over an dongle?
The only thing that really confused me is that some usb c cables are advertised as usb 2.0. I always thought they were 3.0 or 3.1
Victor Cardoza: USB-C just specifies the connector type. The protocol that runs over it can be any of the USB versions.
