Cub Cadet XT1 common drive issue - slower reverse or no reverse. Just one thing to look at first.

    Have had many calls about the machine backing up slower or not at all and pedal seems harder to push or won't move at all for reverse. Forward is fine. Here is the most common issue I have found. It seems to be more prevalent when using a mulch plug as grass will come out from under the deck. Especially if travel while mulching is too fast.

    Thanks very much! I had tried flushing the air out of the transmission, as suggested in a different video, but that had no effect. This video does not show the location of the grass blockage for the rear pedal, but after watching this video I washed out vigorously with a hose and sprayer the whole area under the floorboard and above the deck. I obviously found the location, since reverse then worked perfectly. Another video that I saw later shows the location, which is under the right floor board, directly under the front and reverse pedals. See "Cub Cadet xt1 Craftsman John Deer MTD no reverse or slow reverse Fix Easy."

      I assume it’s the same or very similar on a JD 155C. They’re probably all made by MTD.

    the best way to view the spot shown on the video is from the left hand side of the machine with thee mowing deck lowered. The critical point is on the inside of the frame where the forward/reverse pedal shaft is located. I have done this twice in about 3 years, but I have a small yard (< 1/3 acre).
    This has been the only issue with the lawn tractor.

      where exaclty, I wish he would have shown where this area is....left hand side...as if you are sitting on the mower of standing in front of the mower?

    • @thomasjackson1213
      @thomasjackson1213 Год назад

      @@janelle991 When sitting on the machine, the reverse control rod is on the inside of the right hand side of the frame near the forward/reverse pedals. It is very hard to see but might be better seen from the left side of the machine as when sitting on it. If you have an air compressor with a blower wand it might help with regular cleaning of that spot

      Thank you for the great video. I wish I could see the problem area when cleaning it as clearly as you show it in the video. How did you get such a clear view?
      I have this problem with my Cub Cadet LX42" repeatedly. I have had to clean this area every year (sometimes 2x per year) I've had my mower (3 years) when it starts to back up slow. I'm a homeowner (almost 80 yrs old) and only have 1/3 acre of lawn. I mow my lawn twice per week to keep it nice looking. I use a portable electric leaf blower to clean off the mower after every use, blowing out the grass from wherever I can see it collecting on the mower. And yet with this small of a lawn this area in the reverse mechanism gets clogged up with grass clippings and impacted every season and slows down the reverse speed. I get patient with the reverse speed when it slows only a little bit but after awhile it is down to turtle speed in reverse and I know I have to clean that area of the mechanism for the Model LX42". It is in an enclosed area on this model. Not open like in the video. It is very hard to get at in my limited experience doing it. Using a finger tip and compressed air seems to eventually loosen it up and blow it out. But sometimes it is really packed in there. Anyone have any tips or tricks to cleaning this area more easily. I've thought about making some sort of small access hole or port where the grass clogs up and blocks that reverse piece of metal from moving all the way down. Any ideas about punching or drilling an access hole into something from the top or the bottom in that area to make it easier to clean and access with some poking tool or air compressor nozzle without all the twisting of body, hand, and fingers to do it now? Looking for ideas and suggestions to get access to clean it more easily or to keep it unclogged in the first place. One would think Cub Cadet would solve this problem for its customers with some suggested field fix that dealers could do or handy users could do. Thank you in advance.

    Great video. Reverse was very slow, none if backing up a hill. Channel was clogged with grass and dirt. Remove mower deck first. To clean out the channel, it's easiest to work from the left side of tractor to reach the right side where forward/reverse pedal operates. I found the best way is to use a long screwdriver to loosen the dirt and grass along the channel above the plate, while working a vacuum cleaner hose from both sides of the channel. Also cleaned out the channel where the brake pedal operates. Same procedure, just change sides. Good time to replace blades too. Hard to describe, but once you're in there, you'll see the problem, and it's a simple procedure.

    Thanks so much for video. That was exactly what was wrong with mine. A stick had got up there blocking reverse. The lever is inside the frame where the rocker arm goes through the frame. A little awkward to get to but you can get your fingers in there. Lower the deck so you have more room to work with.
    Thanks again - great video!

      @@thewhip4 pretty much.
      I've had nothing but issues with this mower since I bought it. So far it's been in a repair shop more than on my lawn. Most of the hours are from the service center moving it back and forth on their lot. 2nd week both spindles cracked and bent one blade, retail store told me they had several with the same issue. Now it's the drive belt staying clogged. The high lift blade definitely throw the grass through the spindle holes pretty high. Good for air flow, bad for buildup. Hence debating on mounting a small blower motor and mounting it in a way that it pushes the grass coming up out with the discharged grass. Won't stop it all, but in theory will help. I can also use it to blow it off after every use, and may go ahead and plumb some air vents to hit that drive belt area more easily. Not much room for drilling without affecting bracket integrity how they are made however. Definitely a redneck project. Haha
      I do have an older snapper mower I use either rotate out, or when I have one of my kids available use it to reduce mow time, and it doesn't have this issue.
      Mine are residential use only, and the snapper does all my heavy hauling stuff as far as mowers go due to it actually has better pull strength, and honestly rather not use a newer mower, especially if I can't trust to have the ability to go in reverse when I need it too with a small trailer, roller, sweeper, or dethatcher on the end.
